This book has been damned for being too simplistic, therefore consign it to the trash cart, or so we are expected to do. But given the relative novelty of these financial products simplicity in the best sense of word could be seen as a virtue in any work dealing with this topic. So, why the evident annoyance from some. Could it be that this work dissolves some of the mystery involved, and threatens some closed shop in these markets ?
Outdated and Shallow.......1999-09-02
The book easily shows its age in its focus on standards and issues which have long ago fallen by the wayside in this dynamic market. Far worse is that the book is preciously short on quantitative and analytic methods, and long on third-grade-teacher types of admonishments. I read the whole book becasue I paid for it, there are better, more up-to-date volumes out there. Could possibly be re-named "Swaps for English Majors", although, English majors as a group might correctly be upset at this association.

Pure History, Little Insight.......2005-01-03
Sidney Homer delivers what he promised - a lengthy and extremely detailed history of interest rates. Almost completely absent is any commentary on why interest rates have changed through history. Any observations of cause and effect are left up to the reader to discern. But as a pure history text, the book is readable and thorough both in breadth and depth.

Financial assets grow in value with the passage of time. For debt, we call this "interest", and for equity, we call it "yield". Homer's book is the superbly recorded history of this phenomenon. Perhaps its greatest value is that when you hear or read a new theory, you can assess its validity by comparing the theory's implications with the historical evidence.

Following the 15-year civil war that started in 1975, Lebanon's government began the difficult task of economic stabilization and confidence building, on the one hand, and postwar reconstruction and development, on the other. The government led the reconstruction effort by formulating programs that aimed to rapidly rehabilitate the country's severely damaged infrastructure in preparation for private-sector-led growth over the medium term. At the same time, Lebanon introduced an exchange-rate-based nominal anchor policy to stabilize expectations and cut inflation. This paper analyzes the government's progress with the policies adopted.

To the above reviewer who claims this tome contains no more than a checklist and was not useful to him, my response can only be that even Hamlet, tossed into the ape's den, will eventually become so much banana toppings.
Truly, it would take one of little imagination not to find application within these pages. I offer, as proof, this quote from page 79, "In structures having spiral or sloping floor, the horizontal projection of structure at any cross section shall not exceed allowable area per parking tier."
Ho! Could the Greeks have offered up truth any clearer? Could the poets in their infernal contortions of language have landed on surer footing than the UBC finds in those solid syllables above?
Here I offer you a work of man's pride and his humility, his ambition and his concern. Yes, your tribe may tempt God himself with your Tower of Babel, but by these pages I swear the foundation shall be laid symmetrical and unto a 3 or 4:1 ratio of density to units high depending on area soil composition and proximity to residential dwellings!

This book is a big check-list. Do not buy it if you are actually looking for building code information. However, it would probably be useful to contractors who want to be sure they have covered all bases. (I gave it two stars because it was not useful for me.)
A Must Companion for the UBC Code.......1999-06-02
This book makes an excellent Companion for the 1997 UBC Code. It is broken into section like the UBC code, each section has check list that can be used to insure compliance with the code.
The CD Rom in the back of the book allows you to print out check list that can be used in project files for documentation. An excelent tool for any design Engineer.
