    Book Description

Based on new and existing research by a world-class scholar, this is the first book in twenty years to examine the dynamics of the entire American-West European relationship since 1945. The relationship between the United States and Western Europe has always been crucial and recent events dictate that it is becoming ever more so. In this important new work, Geir Lundestad analyses the balance between the cooperation and conflict which has characterized this relationship in the post-war period. He examines talk of transatlantic drift, and the strain now apparent between the USA and the nation states of Western Europe. In the concluding section, Lundestad offers a topical view of the future of transatlantic interaction. Throughout the work Lundestad's much cited 'empire by invitation' thesis is both put into practice and extended in time and scope. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in one of the most important and enduring international relationships of the last sixty years.

4 out of 5 stars worth to read.......2007-05-13

The book covered 90% of the content on the middleware architecture.
spent lots of time and effect to explain the core component
of the middleware with the consideration of the security, scalability,
management, redundancy, integration. Also it cover the Web service.
Maybe it is a little bit hard for author to put everything within 300 pages. And maybe the author should put more business case with how the Middleware architecture develop from legacy platform towards SOA.
One pitty thing inside the book is the author try to overweight MS's .NET solution. It try to trade off the key strength of J2EE with .NET.
Don't forget the whole ideal of .NET was stolen from open organization.
most of the MS product are lighted from the Open source.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of IT Architecture.......2004-09-06

I have been reading a lot of books about architecture recently, so when I spotted this I bought it without looking too closely at it. If I had paid more attention then I would have noticed that even its title hints that it isn't a standard book about n-tier architecture and/or UML modelling. First, the book is about IT architecture not software architecture, and second middleware is a major driver for the book.

In fact I have to say this is one of the most refreshing books I have read recently. It has the subtitle "Strategies for Building Large, Integrated Systems"; though this is undoubtedly true, I would be more inclined to call it "Everything you wanted to know about architecture but daren't ask"! Certainly for me it filled in some gaps in my knowledge and in general drew together a number of topics that aren't always treated in architecture books, and gave them a nice coherent thread.

See my blog for a more detailed review.

4 out of 5 stars Focuses on the conceptual foundations.......2004-07-01

Excellent book that focuses on the conceptual underpinnings rather than on the specifics of products. If you want to sample a specific section of this book while you are at the bookstore to decide if this is the book for you, I would recommend Section 4.3, "The issue of state." A couple of pages of reading here will clearly reveal the character of this book and help you decide if this is the type of discussion that would make your adrenalin flow.
I withheld one star because the writing style was a bit jagged -almost as if written by someone as the author was speaking impromptu.

5 out of 5 stars Yesterday, today and tomorrow of middleware - a must read!!.......2004-03-24

An excellent coverage of what's, why's and how's of middleware technologies.

The book gives an interesting perspective into the growth of middleware solutions with special focus on enterprise systems architecture and distributed technologies. The long journey that begins with TP monitors and primitive "transaction machines" covers a great deal of ground outlining the need-driven evolution of various middleware alternatives and ends with the discussion of latest - the EJB, .NET and CORBA. There is a special emphasis on the changing landscape brought about by the rise of eCommerce and the need to manage large-scale enterprise systems.

I love the way author drives home some very complex concepts. This book can serve as an indispensable resource both for beginners and experienced professionals. While the novice can easily comprehend intricacies of IT architecture, experienced architects will find a lot of food for throughout and new insights into many issues. I personally had many "ah, what a brilliant idea" moments. You will find many useful and perhaps unconventional solutions to practical problems. It can even help an IT manager to understand the real middleware and IT architecture issues and to make intelligent decisions without having to get deep into technical waters.

Overall, this book is a must have and deserves 10 horseshoes. [...]

5 out of 5 stars An out and out excellent book.......2003-06-03

Rarely these days do you come across a technical book that gets to the bottom of the issues in a non-marketing manner and without using excessive technical jargon.

At the bottom of it all, the complexities of building large applications are based on some practical issues as well as some theoretical computing issues. How these architectural issues can be addressed in a product independent manner is at the heart of this book.

It was a pleasure to read again a non-verbose book showing the clarity of thought, and I strongly recommend it to any one interested in architectural issues of building large systems.

4 out of 5 stars Change through learning.......2000-02-07

There are many books on the change process but few address the learning that must occur by those who are changed. DiBella and Nevis provide a tool for you to analyze the learning capability of your organization, as well as to help you identify those learning leverage points that need to be tweaked for the organization to achieve its goals.

5 out of 5 stars An Organizational Learning Model That Makes Sense.......2000-01-21

In my quest to learn about organizational learning, I have probably read the majority of what has been written on this topic. I have found this book by Anthony DiBella and Edwin Nevis to be the most useful in providing insights to capacity development while building on some solid theoretical foundations.

The authors build on the work of giants in organizational development, but their approach is considerably more pragmatic, consistent with the movement of organizational theorists to link their work to practice. They describe the importance of involved leadership and provide examples of how that would look. They note the difficulty of linking specific outcomes to learning inputs, because of the time lags that exist. They note that "learning itself becomes transparent over time, and we fail to recognize what we have learned or accomplished" (DiBella & Nevis, 1998, p. 199). Another feature is the acknowledgment that leadership is not vested in a single individual but rather "is exhibited both vertically and horizontally throughout any organization" (p. 76), a view that is espoused by enlightened leadership writers and valued by employees around the world.

They present organizational learning as a learning cycle, consistent with the beliefs of other theorists and practitioners. By using the learning cycle as a foundation, the authors set up a model of organizational learning as a continuous process, similar to continuous quality improvement processes or the widely recognized experiential learning model of David Kolb.

The authors respond to an identified need for tools to measure organizational learning and offer a variety of methods by which organizations can be analyzed and improved. Their model is grounded in theory, but it offers tools for translating the theory into organizational practice.

In addition to providing a meaningful model, describing organizational learning styles, and identifying facilitating factors (those factors that could be changed to enhance organizational learning capacity), the authors offer practical advice on how to enhance the factors that contribute to more productive organizational learning.

The DiBella/Nevis model is the most concrete and complete of all of the organizational learning resources reviewed. Unlike most of the writings about organizational learning, there is a research base, a research tool, and guidance on planning organizational interventions.

Their model makes sense with what we understand about learning. It also makes sense with what we know about the way organizations work. And helping organizations learn makes sense for individuals and society.

Director of the Center for Learning, Northwestern Michigan College

5 out of 5 stars In-depth, practical, best book on learning organizations!.......1999-09-09

I am an organization consultant and have found DiBella and Nevis's book very useful. For instance, they provide a practical framework for assessing learning in teams. This book lacks the usual faddish gibberish surrounding learning organizations. I believe this book is significant, particularly for trainers and consultants. I chose this book to review in-depth for Training Media Review magazine. Solid, useful conceptual presentation.

          Book Description

In an effort to become more flexible and competitive, companies are migrating from legacy systems to integrated business management package software products. These products represent the future for companies that need to streamline their business processes and improve the sharing of information in order to compete in the rapidly evolving business world. Yet adopting a package software solution is not a process to be taken lightly, and this critical change can represent a tremendous investment of time and resources.

Most corporate officers charged with purchasing package software products are not experienced buyers, and there is very little information available to guide you through this process. Enterprise-Wide Software Solutions is the thorough tutorial and lasting reference you need to help you implement, use, and manage these powerful tools. This book provides a basis for planning and managing expectations among all relevant groups-corporate management, information technology staff, users, outside consultants, and the software vendor.

Companies are investing significant amounts of money and time to implement business package solutions. This book helps you reduce these costs and hours to more reasonable levels. Crucial topics-budgeting, project team organization, cost-justification, customization, outsourcing, reengineering, testing, training, and more-are covered in detail, allowing you to concentrate on the selection process, implementation strategy, and package software product that is best for your company.

          5 out of 5 stars It's very good book.......2003-09-18

This book is very useful for choose right ERP package and implementation.

1 out of 5 stars What a waste of time and money.......2001-01-14

As someone involved in the consulting area for many years, I was unable to find any new idea that would make worthwhile to spend money in this book. Almost everything that is mentioned here can be grabbed from free articles availables in Internet, about this subject. Additionally, there are a good number of books that will help you much more to plan and implement ERP's. Last, but not least, the book only have a handful of small pictures and tables. Unacceptable for a modern book about business and technology topics.

          3 out of 5 stars High-level Overview.......2000-09-27

This book provides a high-level overview of many of the issues surrounding an ERP implementation. However, the coverage is superficial and repetitive. I think a 10-page summary of this material would be much more useful than this 200-page book. Often I felt like the book was more of an advertisement for a consulting company than a serious treatment of the issues involved in implementing an ERP system. Still, it may help one who is inexperienced in this area to know some of the important questions to ask before and during the implementation.

4 out of 5 stars A good summary of the complex issue of enterprise systems.......1999-10-06

This book is a good overview of all of the issues related to the selection and implementation of enterprise systems. I have purchased several copies of the book and distributed them to potential clients. I use the book as a gift during my seminars.

The book, however, does not go into a lot of details on such critical issues such as change management and business case development for the project.

This is a good introduction book and is an easy read. I recommend it for readers who want to understand the issues of ERP at a high level.

2 out of 5 stars Important topic, but superficial treatment!.......1999-07-12

This book identifies all the important areas in enterpise software package implementation. However, I was really disappointed with the superficial treatment overall. Much of the stuff looks old - material that has been around in books on project management for a long long time. It would have been invaluable if the author had focused in detail on the two key areas (package selection and package implementation) and provided more specific tools/techniques etc.
