Book Description
John Train's status as an investment wizard is the result of decades of stock market investing and investment counseling. The Craft of Investing is the ultimate treatise on how to invest well, outlining Train's key strategies and the principles that have brought him success.
Train addresses everything from the psychology of the market to practical portfolio management tips. He explains growth investing, value investing, when to buy and when to sell, estate planning and shows how to build wealth and value systematically. Authoritative and practical, Train's analysis of winning techniques will help every investor.
Customer Reviews:
Useful book, but not one of Train's best.......2003-04-27
John Train's slim book The Craft of Investing has a title that might mislead some readers into thinking that it is another one of his well-crafted overviews on investing. A good portion of the text, however, deals with topics that are probably most relevant to high networth individuals, family wealth management professionals and private bankers. Other investors will find chapters such as "Family Capital," "The [Trust] Executor's Job," and "How to Use a Safe-Deposit Box" less than relevant.
There are passages that are of interest to a wider audience. The first portion of the book is a brief, but useful survey of different investment styles. Other passages provide an interesting distillation of Train's tips on what makes a good investor, for instance, his advice about reverse engineering the trades of well-regarded institutional investors ("start by piggybacking on the thinking of the best professionals"); keeping a conservative approach to investing (which he says favors " sober, seasoned, careful older people"), and honing of investment skills to a professional level. "Most points are lost on errors, rather than by forcing shots. Since the investor never has to act, he should focus on not making avoidable mistakes." There is not enough meat on the bone here, though, to rank this book as one of Train's better ones. Instead, readers new to his work are better off starting with The Money Masters and The New Money Masters, two books that rank among the best in the investment field.
A Good Book.......2003-01-04
Overall this is a great investment book. It covers an extremely broad range of topics and for the most part the reader cannot go too far wrong following the author's advice. The sections on the nature of markets and his advice on commodities alone makes the book worthwhile. Bear in mind that the book was published in 1994 but most of the content is timeless. Another book with much of the same advice is The Only Investment Guide You'll Ever Need by Andrew Tobias. One additional thing- some of the charts and tables and examples date from the 1970's and are evidently from magazine articles that the author wrote. Just so you know what you are buying. The example are good ones and mostly remain relevant today. The only real limitation of the book is Train's simplistic approach to growth stock picking.
What A Book.......2002-07-19
It is impossible to praise this book enough. I have been actively investing for greater than 10 years, and I have read more books than I care to count. You will feel much more confident in your investing and making choices. I finally have a good grip on why do stocks go up and down. But you get insight into other matters as well ,and get to feel the wisdom of a true master,in a well written easy style. Just what we need during this deflating bubble we are in now.
Overall, A Good Book for Investors........2002-03-24
"The Craft of Investing" is a short, basic, and fun-to-read book that teaches you a bit about conservative investment. It doesn't go into analytic detail but emphasizes the broader concepts. The first half of the book is the best and deals mainly with stock investment. You can neglect most of the later chapters if you want and still benefit greatly.
You will learn how not to sit on a bad investment, or as John Train says, not "become a boiled frog." It is claimed that if a frog is put in a cup of warm water, it will just sit there, even as the water is slowly heated. If the poor old frog had been tossed into a pan of boiling water he would have realized the situation was not good and immediately jump out. But, as the water is slowly heated, the frog decides he can tolerate the slight change in temperature. Never making his mind up to get out, the frog boils. Many investors do the same with bad investments. As the company gets progressively worse, they hold on hoping the situation will improve--only to lose more and more money.
Much of successful investment demands little more than learning what not to do and John Train will help show you what not to do.
Peter Hupalo, Author of "Becoming An Investor: Building Wealth By Investing In Stocks, Bonds, And Mutual Funds."
Excellent Read on Investing and Financial Matters.......1998-10-13
This book is an easy to read primer on investing and other financial matters such as estate planning and retirement planning. There are no specific formulas to follow. Rather, the book is loaded with common sense and practical advice. As far as investing, Train as one would expect discusses growth and value investment styles. But there are gems not found in other books such as his comments on emerging markets, real estate and art. Beginning and experienced investors will get alot out of this book. I'm reading it for my second time - always a sign of a good book.

Preparation, Preparation, Preparation..........2007-08-23
Well written, easy to use, practical guide to questions you are very likely to hear in your interview. While the claim to provide the "best answers" may be arguable, the questions were on target and the ideas for how one might answer them were excellent. This book is great for those who hire as well as for those who are seeking employment. Worth the investment.
I'm working!.......2007-02-11
I have been out of work for a little over a year, and all my previous employments were temp jobs so I needed to brush up on everything. After reading the reviews I decided to go with this book.
I have never regretted it since and have recommended it to close friends. I kid you not when I say that during my interview I ended up interviewing the interviewer. Before the interview I did what the book said and read up on the company and found out that they had won several awards which I later mentioned to her. Apparently none of the other candidates did their homework b/c she acted impressed over that. I asked questions concerning downsizing, why she chose to work there, how long has she worked for the company, her management style. She was very friendly and very talkative...ended up telling me about her daughter in college, her background (which I found out we were raised in the same country!), etc. Making sure not to discuss salary/benefits with her (something the book recommended and I stuck to until I met the VP who gave me what I asked for) And eventhough I had to be tested after speaking to her, I was confident enough to ask her questions during the test and be honest about things I didn't understand. She even showed me the tricks behind the test! Something the recruiter said was not done with anyone else. The only thing I wished I had done was my homework in salary negotiating. So for those of you out there, do your homework on salary and negotiating tips before the interview! Do get this book for you high school/college grad. It's easy to read, down-to-earth, and for today's job hunters.
Just Okay.......2007-01-28
There was some good information in this book. However, there's very little new infromation that's not available for free somewhere else. What's you're paying for is mainly the time it took the author to compile the infromation gathered from numerous places. Most people serious enough to buy a book like this probably won't have a problem finding work anyway.
Land your dream job!.......2006-11-24
I bought this book because I was told of pending layoffs due to selling a division of the company. I had been there almost 5 years, so I definitely needed to get a review on my Interviewing skills.
This book prepared me with questions that might be asked, possible answers and questions that cannot be asked. I especially liked Ch.10 "Stress Questions" These type questions really make you think about your career, where you've been and where you intend to go. Answers to these questions, I feel, enable you to elaborate on other questions that might be asked during an interview. It really is about the applicant as a whole and what you have to offer that company.
This book helped me land my dream job (seriously) and I hope it does the same for you!
A good book to review when looking for a job.......2006-11-21
If for nothing else the books forces you to review your work history and have every bit of information about your self available.
The numerous questions will help anyone become more familiar with one's self and be able to answer most any question without hesitation. This book does not have ALL the questions, but just reading through it and answering the ones present forces you to be aware of all your experience (good and bad). Now that you know your "work experience" you can turn it into a resume and better sell your self.
The book was a definite help for me.

Book Description
True or False? Most PowerPoint presentations are: BLcompelling BLilluminating BLinformative BLclear and to the point Answer: False Make a change following the principles of Stephen Kosslyn: BLa world authority on the visual brain BLa clear and engaging writer Making PowerPoint presentations that are clear, compelling, memorable, and even enjoyable is not an obscure art. In this book, Stephen Kosslyn, a renowned cognitive neuroscientist, presents eight simple principles for constructing a presentation that takes advantage of the information modern science has discovered about perception, memory, and cognition. Using hundreds of images and sample slides, he shows the common mistakes many people make and the simple ways to fix them. For example, never use underlining to emphasize a word--the line will cut off the bottom of letters that have descending lines (such as p and g), which interferes with the brain's ability to recognize text. Other tips include why you should state your conclusion at the beginning of a presentation, when to use a line graph versus a bar graph, and how to use color correctly. By following Kosslyn's principles, anyone will be able to produce a presentation that works!
Customer Reviews:
Excellent guide to visual design of slides.......2007-10-18
This is an excellent guide to the visual design of presentation slides (PowerPoint or otherwise). Kosslyn explain his 8 principles, and then provides guidelines for various aspects of presentations, such as text, sound, graphs, and other visuals. At the end of each chapter, he ties the guidelines in that chapter to basic principles that underlie them.
However, Kosslyn is an expert on visual perception, not an expert on learning. Therefore, take his suggestions on non-visual aspects of presentations with a grain of salt. For example, he endorses reading your slides aloud, which he says "gives the viewers two chances to understand and remember them". In fact, reading and hearing the same information *reduces* retention of information. For more details, see Multimedia Learning.
If you buy only one book to improve your presentations, I suggest that you get Beyond Bullet Points: Using Microsoft PowerPoint to Create Presentations That Inform, Motivate, and Inspire (Bpg-Other). However, "Clear and to the Point" is an excellent additional resource.
Well written, informative, and practical.......2007-09-29
Clear and to the Point provided exactly the information I wanted and in a way that was easy to use. It is well written, informative, and practical; it can be read as a stand-alone book or used hands-on as a reference tool while creating a talk with PowerPoint slides. The principles in the book are ones that will be familiar to those who've pursued insights into public speaking in other ways; however, the book is outstanding at introducing the topics to the reader as either a refresher or new knowledge. Long-time presenters could use the book as a check on how well they are doing and areas for additional refinement. One key asset to the book is the overview of presenting visual information -- charts, in particular. The examples are clear and instructive. This aspect of the book is unique from other books on public speaking and PowerPoint use that I have browsed. This content plus the concise principles make it a worthwhile addition to my professional collection.
As it says on the front cover: Clear and to the Point!.......2007-09-06
Professor Kosslyn has brilliantly combined clear visual examples with succinct yet deeply insightful text to help you quickly improve your ability to communicate effectively using Powerpoint. A must-have book for anyone making presentations...even if not using Powerpoint!
Maximising Powerpoints Potential.......2007-08-30
This book takes you on a journey to convey the best and worst of powerpoint presentations. Grounded in theories of visual cognition, the book uses actual slides to illustrate the key principles underlying effective powerpoint presentatins. Written in an accessible style, Kosslyn uses anecdotes and catch-phrases to increase the memorability of the material (e.g., the Goldilocks principle-not too much, not too little, just right). This book is a "must-buy" for communicators in the powerpoint medium!
