5 out of 5 stars Good explanatory book.......2003-03-01

I used this book for my psychological statistics course last semester. Although I have had teachers in the past who explained things more adequately, this book did a really good job explaining things for the most part. I almost always use examples to learn how to apply knowledge, as working through a problem step by step seems to be the best teacher to me. Fortunately, this book has a lot of examples. And, as a bonus, these examples apply towards the social sciences so you can see how everything fits in with a topic you're actually interested in (let's face it, few are interested in math).

I had already taken a statistics course in high school, so my stats class last year was pretty much a review for me. However, I wound up actually learning more than I planned to because of this book.

Overall, I recommend the book for anybody learning statistics.

    Book Description

Globalization has opened up non-Western societies to forces of economic, political and cultural liberalism for the first time, and this process has had a profound effect upon Islamic societies, causing unease and concern among many Muslims.

The conflict between Islam and globalization and the West is perhaps the most pressing issue in the post-September 11th era, and the articles reprinted in this set represent the shape of international relations--conciliatory and otherwise--between the two civilizations in the late-twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

With a general introduction by the editor, the volumes include articles by leading scholars that initially examine the various ways in which Islam has tried to protect itself against the encroachment of the West, before investigating a more outward-looking Islam that encourages religious reformism and evolution in order to contend with the new challenges and priorities of a global community.

      Book Description

Models, Methods, Concepts and Applications of the Analytic Hierarchy Process is a volume dedicated to selected applications of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) focused on three themes: economics, the social sciences, and the linking of measurement with human values. (1) The AHP offers economists a substantially different approach to dealing with economic problems through ratio scales. The main mathematical models on which economics has based its quantitative thinking up to now are utility theory, which uses interval scales, and linear programming. We hope that the variety of examples included here can perhaps stimulate researchers in economics to try applying this new approach. (2) The second theme is concerned with the social sciences. The AHP offers psychologists and political scientists the methodology to quantify and derive measurements for intangibles. We hope that the examples included in this book will encourage them to examine the methods of AHP in terms of the problems they seek to solve. (3) The third theme is concerned with providing people in the physical and engineering sciences with a quantitative method to link hard measurement to human values. In such a process one needs to interpret what the measurements mean. A number is useless until someone understands what it means. It can have different meanings in different problems. Ten dollars are plenty to satisfy one's hunger but are useless by themselves in buying a new car. Such measurements are only indicators of the state of a system, but do not relate to the values of the human observers of that system. AHP methods can help resolve the conflicts between hard measurement data and human values.

          Book Description

Economic analysis grounded in a gender approach is beginning to enter mainstream economics. The discipline is increasingly recognizing that economic behavior may be influenced by gender, as well as examining critically the gender discrimination inherent in some macroeconomic concepts. This volume, with its wide-ranging intellectual explorations and specific case studies, seeks to make a contribution to this process. Using often original empirical material taken from the actual experiences of Latin American countries, the contributors explore a wide range of key issues.

            Book Description

Achieving and sustaining higher levels of human well-being is a core challenge, for individuals, governments and international organisations worldwide. Measures of human well-being levels are an integral part of this process, being increasingly used to monitor and evaluate conditions within and among countries. This book provides insights into how human well-being might be better conceptualised and measured. It identifies and reviews various concepts and measures and provides recommendations for future practice and research.

            Book Description

Chris Maser, author of such books as From the Forest to the Sea and Sustainable Forestry, brings us his newest and possibly most important work. Sustainable Community Development, the sequel to his recently published book, Resolving Environmental Conflict, discusses the next step - understanding what sustainable community development actually means.Maser presents a clear picture of sustainable community development for what it truly is-a community-directed process of development that is based on human values, active learning, shared communication and cooperation, within a fluid system, void of quick fixes, integrated learning and work, that becomes a shared societal vision both culturally and environmentally.Sustainability, in the sense of community development, is the act of one generation saving options by passing them on to the next generation, and so on. This is the main thrust of Maser's book. Readers will see the importance of and the need for shifting personal consciousness from being self-centered to becoming other-centered. This book is perfect for environmentalists, conservationists and those concerned with restoration, concerned business leaders and developers, community and government leaders and policy makers, economists, and academicians.

This book is so good and relevant to real life and common community development. I only wish i could own it, but since i'm just a NEEDY student, i can't afford paying, otherwise i would like to have my hands on it, not only for my own benefit, but for those communities i intend to serve after my Masters next year.

                  Book Description

Exceptional communities possessing a definitive sense of place, the cities and towns presented in this book have created or re-created a style, ambience, or character that transcends the ordinary and is used as the basis for community economic development. Adapting the idea of concept marketing, these communities have found a niche or specialty to create community recognition and serve as a basis for garnering external investment, tourism, and other revenue-generating events. This book examines the use of popular and corporate culture, retail establishments, historical tradition, and surrealism in community concept marketing and profiles examples of communities from a diverse array of contexts and geographical settings. Bellows Falls, VT, for instance, a once-depressed former milltown has transformed itself to a vibrant community through an arts integrated development strategy, while Austin, MN, the home of Hormel Foods, has drawn on the town's corporate culture with the opening of a new SPAM Museum. Manchester, VT, taking a retail approach, has become a designer outlet mecca, and Walnut, IA, the state's "Antique City." Cape May, NJ, has restored its historic properties and successfully marketed itself as a seaside resort, while Holland, MI, exemplifies the surreal approach, marketing itself as a Dutch town. Considering these and other uniquely marketed communities, this book examines the elements necessary for a successful concept marketing strategy to community economic development.

                  Book Description

The task of continuously renewing a company is the greatest challenge confronting any chief executive. To enable managers to project renewal strategies likely to win in the future, Jeffrey Williams has constructed a dynamic road map of outcomes in what he calls "economic time," based on a ten-year study of growth, decline, and renewal patterns of hundreds of companies in forty-five industries. In this superbly readable book, Williams's revolutionary, award-winning concept of slow-, standard-, and fast-cycle economic time provides a unifying business language that the multicycle manager can use to compare the renewal opportunities of widely diverse products, companies, and markets. Using examples and studies from companies such as Starbucks, McDonald's, UPS, Compaq, Sony, Merck, Disney, Toyota, IKEA, Microsoft, Sony, Intel, IBM, Johnson & Johnson, Chrysler, and Hewlett-Packard, Williams explains that the key idea in economic time is being able to manage products and organizations according to the speed and means by which economic value arises, decays, and is renewed. The drivers of economic time are isolating mechanisms -- a firm's unique capabilities that lie at the heart of its competitive advantage -- and that, in Williams's framework, "delay" product obsolescence. Building on his intuitively appealing model, Williams describes how his three laws of renewal -- convergence, alignment, and renewal -- provide guidelines by which managers can gain command over strategy in complex, dynamic competitive situations. 5 out of 5 stars The dimension of time makes the difference.......2006-06-25

Strategic management is a fascinating topic, and attracts much authorship; at first glance, this work may look like 'just another book on strategy'. Fortunately, it is much deeper than that. Paying attention to different parts of the business environment, and tracking the rate at which change takes place across many parameters, the author examines strategy through the concept of 'economic time'.

While the concept is simple, its ramifications are not: companies operating in different cycles must learn to develop, test, market, partner, cannibalize, reinvent, re-release, give away, and change, in very different ways. This dramatically affects their organizational structures and resource allocation, as well as their culture. Dr Williams makes these points very clear, and has organized the book in a way that gives appropriate weight to the discussions that lead to a new way of thinking.
In particular, I would recommend the chapter on "Multicycle Management" to anyone working in a big company or conglomerate, which cannot get defined by a single cycle style.

Upon finishing this book, the reader will be armed with a new way of viewing departments, companies, even industries.

5 out of 5 stars Renewable Advantage delivers Remarkable Advantage.......2000-05-18

Jeffrey Williams has delivered a new and important way for businesses to view their strategic position. Whether slow cycle, or fast cycle, his most important revelation is that no business has the right simply to exist. All businesses exist to maximize value to the stakeholder.

Sometimes, maximum value is only achieved by transforming your business. Ultimately, maximum value may be achieved by breakup or dissolution of the business. Once these sobering realizations are assimilated, Professor Williams proceeds in a very readable and informative way to help businesses understand where they are, where their markets are, and how to maximize value where they need to be. A must read for voyagers through the New Economy.

Jeffrey Williams has broken new ground in the field of strategic management! This book will help guide managers and investors through the often cloudy world of economic time. By following the precepts laid out in this book, companies will be able to achieve sustainable competitive advantage regardless of the industry or competition. Professor Williams book is as engaging as his lectures. A must read!

5 out of 5 stars Must read for any serious business person.......1999-09-25

Jeffrey Williams takes an new approach to analyzing competitive forces based on the new concept of economic time. This allows insight into how to manage and compete within different industries, or, within different divisions of a company. I found the insights to be unique, and extraordinarily valuable to me as an entrepreneur in the high tech industry.

1 out of 5 stars Great reviews, but disappointing.......1999-08-05

The reviews on the books back cover actually intrigued me - DJ Teece, Al Rappaport actually do not review books uncritically. But in this case there is a big "but". The book actually is an extension of an article of Williams published long ago, and the reviews probably still reflect the article and not the book, which is not recommendable. It is strange, for example, that the author refers to the pharmaceutical industry as "slow cycle" industry, while everybody knows that there are few industry where time is so critical to success and where radical changes (just look at biotech and the revolutionary changes ahead) occur so quickly and drammatically.

The book cites far too many industries to provide any actionable information and it is legitimate to say that it is highly superficial.

My clear vote is "Not recommended".
