Book Description

With this book, Nancy Isenberg illuminates the origins of the women's rights movement. Rather than herald the singular achievements of the 1848 Seneca Falls convention, she examines the confluence of events and ideas—before and after 1848—that, in her view, marked the real birth of feminism. Drawing on a wide range of sources, she demonstrates that women's rights activists of the antebellum era crafted a coherent feminist critique of church, state, and family. In addition, Isenberg shows, they developed a rich theoretical tradition that influenced not only subsequent strains of feminist thought but also ideas about the nature of citizenship and rights more generally.

By focusing on rights discourse and political theory, Isenberg moves beyond a narrow focus on suffrage. Democracy was in the process of being redefined in antebellum America by controversies over such volatile topics as fugitive slave laws, temperance, Sabbath laws, capital punishment, prostitution, the Mexican War, married women's property rights, and labor reform—all of which raised significant legal and constitutional questions. These pressing concerns, debated in women's rights conventions and the popular press, were inseparable from the gendered meaning of nineteenth-century citizenship.

1 out of 5 stars Preaching to the choir.......2003-10-20

If you are not already well-steeped in the vocabulary and concepts of feminist theory and American history, don't bother picking up this book -- you won't understand a word of it.

4 out of 5 stars Antebellum Women's Rights.......2001-10-17

Isenberg studies women's political and social activism in antebellum America. In her study she demonstrates how through various mediums such as public speaking, conventions, publications and fashion women expressed a unique feminist perspective. Feminists of antebellum America more importantly, attempt and perhaps succeed to an extent to define their own gender roles and defy those ascribed them by men. With a keen understanding of rights and representation feminists challenge the normative assumptions of citizenship.

5 out of 5 stars One of the finest examples of political history.......1999-08-24

Nancy Isenberg has written one of the finest examples of political history to emerge from the field of women's history. Her work underscores the importance of the women's rights movement and situates that movement within the political culture of the antebellum period. The book is a little weak on narrative but its sophistication and ability to contextualize the women's rights movement within the broader political culture of the period makes this book a worthwhile read for all historians interested in pre-civil war America.

    Book Description

Since the publication of Robert Putnam's Bowling Alone, there has been much scholarly literature devoted to the concept of social capital. However, only a small portion of that literature is devoted to its relationship with gender. In Gender and Social Capital, leading scholars-including Pippa Norris, Ron Inglehart, and Theda Skocpol-provide an in-depth analysis of two fundamental and hitherto neglected questions: What can gender tell us about social capital? And what can social capital tell us about women and politics? Gender and Social Capital is essential reading for anyone interested in the relationship between gender and civic engagement.

    Book Description

This work takes a historical look at women and the death penalty in the United States from 1900 to 1998. It gives the reader a look at the penal codes in the various states regarding the death penalty and the personal stories of women who have been executed or who are currently on death row. As Americans continue to debate the enforcement of the death penalty, the issues of race and gender as they relate to the death penalty are also debated. This book offers a unique perspective to a recurring sociopolitical issue.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An important source.......2000-04-05

Eschewing sensationalism, O'Shea has provided a state-by-state review of women and the death penalty in the last century. While it may not be as easy to read as books such as WOMEN WHO KILL because it does not have an overarching narrative, it does provide the stories and information. I am assigining it in a law school course I teach WOMEN & CRIME. I'd recommend it for all those who are serious about this issue.

    Book Description

The United States has the highest incarceration and execution rate in the industrialized world; 70 percent of the nearly two million incarcerated in prisons and immigration detention centers are people of color. States of Confinement uncovers the political, social, and economic biases in policing and punishment. The distinguished contributors- Angela Y. Davis, Manning Marable, Gary Marx, Robert Meeropol, Julie Su, and Judi Bari-discuss abuses of police powers in American society. They expose racial profiling and sentencing disparities that target African Americans and Latinos, the sexual exploitation of women, racist and homophobic violence, the policing of Asian Americans and Arabs, the conditions of HIV-positive prisoners, the use of the Grand Jury and police to undermine political activity, and environmental activism.

The reason I picked up States of Confinement was because of its cover art. The powerful front piece was amazing and it went hand and hand with the powerful essays contained in the book. I was curious and researched the artist at and was awed by the fact that he had spent 12 years in prison. Then I realized why he connected with States of Confinement

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding collection!.......2000-02-06

Joy James has collected a great group of essays from engaged academics and thoughtful activists dealing with a wide range of issues related to the prison-industrial complex. The best way to convey the content is probably to list some of the essays: * Robbie Meeropol, "Testimony" (of a Rosenberg son) * Dan Williams, lawyer for Mumia, on the case * Manning Marable, "Black Radicalism & an Economy of Incarceration" * Angela Davis, "From Convict Lease System to Super-Max" * Adrien King, "Black Women & Gangs" * Luana Ross, "Imprisoned Notive Women & Importance of Native Tradition" * Alexandra Suh, "Military Prostitution in Asia & U.S." * Gabriel Torres & David Love, "Militarization of Police in U.S." * Gary Marx, "The New Surveillance" * Jose Lopez, "Political Incarceration" * Donna Willmott, "Time to Bring our Political Prisoners Home" * Judi Bari, "Earth First! & FBI" * and a dozen more

      Book Description

Women on death row are such a rarity that, once condemned, they may be ignored and forgotten. Ohio, a typical, middle-of-the-road death penalty state, provides a telling example of this phenomenon. The Fairer Death: Executing Women in Ohio explores Ohio’s experience with the death penalty for women and reflects on what this experience reveals about the death penalty for women throughout the nation. Victor Streib’s analysis of two centuries of Ohio death penalty legislation and adjudication reveals no obvious exclusion of women or even any recognition of an issue of sex bias. In this respect, Ohio’s justice system exemplifies the subtle and insidious nature of this cultural disparity. Professor Streib provides detailed descriptions of the cases of the four women actually executed by Ohio since its founding and of the cases of the ten women sentenced to death in Ohio in the current death penalty era (1973–2005). Some of these cases had a profound impact on death penalty law, but most were routine and drew little attention. A generation later, reversals and commutations have left only one woman on Ohio’s death row. Although Streib focuses specifically on Ohio, the underlying premise is that Ohio is, in many ways, a typical death penalty state. The Fairer Death provides insight into our national experience, provoking questions about the rationale for the death penalty and the many disparities in its administration.

          Book Description

Abortion and capital punishment are bitterly contested issues that provoke passionate yet contradictory attitudes about life and death. Drawing on in-depth interviews conducted with a diverse group of people who shared their views on religion, race, gender, and politics, Kimberly J. Cook probes the cultural forces underlying the apparent paradox of opposition to abortion and support for the death penalty.

The author frames her insightful examination within the context of the legal, political, and theoretical histories of abortion and capital punishment. Combining excerpts from her interviews with statistical analysis, she skillfully explores the full range of stances on these divisive social issues: pro-choice, anti-death penalty; pro-choice, pro-death penalty; pro-life, anti-death penalty; and pro-life, pro-death penalty.

Cook finds that punitiveness, the desire to punish those who are perceived to violate a code of ethical behavior, is a common thread that links and explains the inconsistencies in public opinion. Her groundbreaking work analyzes and interprets perspectives on abortion and capital punishment in new and provocative ways.

            Book Description

While gender has so often been found to be an important determinant of prevalence and outcomes of mental illness, economists have rarely focused on gender differences as a central element of their analyses. In this volume, we direct the focus of research in the economics of mental health squarely on the topic of gender. Each paper in this volume provides insight into the ways in which women and men are afflicted and affected by mental illness in the labor market. This volume will provide the reader with a richer understanding of prevalence of mental disorders, the educational, employment and earnings impacts of psychiatric disease, and prospects for treating and providing access to health care for the mentally ill.

The perennially controversial issue of capital punishment has generated especially passionate debate in recent years. In this book, two noted experts on crime provide a geo-historical perspective on capital punishment, showing vividly the incoherencies and contradictions in policies and practices across the country. Going back to the earliest U.S. executions, the authors challenge the belief that capital punishment serves as a deterrent. Using state-of-the-art methods drawn from geographic information systems (GIS), they illustrate the culture of capital punishment and its impact on selected groups, mapping the execution of women, for example, and the origin and diffusion of electrocution, the gas chamber, and lethal injection. This book will be indispensable to anyone--scholar, policy maker, or lay person--who must be informed on the issue of capital punishment.

                Book Description

Modern Constitutional Theory: A Reader can be used as a supplement to introductory courses in Constitutional Law, or as a text for a course in Constitutional Theory. The authors begin Chapter 1 with a look at some of the currently influential theories of the Constitution. In Chapter 2, the authors turn to the document itself and examine various proposals for interpreting it. In Chapter 3, the authors take up the closely allied problem of judicial review. Thereafter, the authors have organized the book to correspond with the major topics covered in casebooks on Constitutional Law. The authors have organized the chapters according to doctrinal categories, however the readings they contain are not an elaboration (or condensation) of doctrine such as one would find in a hornbook. The authors instead go deeper than a restatement of the law, to ask what and whose purposes are served by existing rules, and to inquire whether some other organization is preferable. Not all readings address these questions from the same point of view. The selections take opposing positions on each subject, in order to make students aware of the existing conflict and to facilitate class discussion of the materials.

I have no idea why anyone would purchase this voluntarily, in which case there is really no reason for a review since most likely it is a required text. Enjoy. (It gets four stars because it's paperback, and compact.)
