Transport Economics
ASIN: 1845422562 |
Book Description
Transport continues to present considerable challenges for both policymakers and economists throughout the world. This book, now available in paperback, provides a rigorous analytical approach to transport economics and transport policy, showing how economic principles can be applied to problems and practical solutions derived. As well as providing detailed coverage on the conventional topics of demand, costs, market structure, externalities, investment appraisal and regulation, the book also examines the wider role of transport in the economy as a whole. In addition, the authors address the important link between transport and issues of location, urban and regional development, and economic growth. Throughout the book there are frequent references to policy issues at both the national and EU level, complemented by a comprehensive discussion on the different ways in which policy has evolved in various European countries. The concluding chapter draws together some of the problems encountered in moving from the theories and models developed in the book to the actual implementation of specific policy measures. The authors believe that only policies based on a thorough understanding of the economics of transport can help solve some of the pressing problems facing governments across Europe. This unique book addresses a wide range of issues and makes use of cutting-edge data to provide a set of universal tools to analyze and inform policy at all levels. It assumes only a basic knowledge of economics and will be essential reading for students at advanced undergraduate and postgraduate level following courses on transport economics, regional science, urban studies and geography. It will also prove a valuable source of reference for policymakers involved in the provision and regulation of transport and researchers interested in transport planning and policy.
Book Description
While formal quality management systems are a basic requirement for carriers doing business with the automotive industry, it is a company's understanding of key items such as leadership, continuous improvement, and customer satisfaction that is needed to survive and excel in today's market. Shifting Gears brings a unique approach to quality in the trucking industry, clearly defining the issues that challenge a carrier's very survival of business and, through the principles embodied in ISO 9000, discusses practical measures for addressing these challenges. It identifies ISO 9000 as an effective management tool, offering information on how business leaders can reduce their costs, improve their overall business efficiency, and improve their competitive advantage in the marketplace. This quality management principles book moves beyond quality management principles to include methods for use in day-to-day operations, helping carriers easily shift gears to make these tools a part of the company culture.
Customer Reviews:
Easy to read and informative.......2004-08-19
Of all the industries in the United States and around the world, few are as challenging as the transportation industry and more specifically, the trucking industry. Comprising 5% of the GDP and with over 70% of the cities and towns around the globe solely dependent on trucks to deliver their goods, trucking is truly the backbone of the economy. However, high insurance rates and fuel prices as well as a constant shortage of drivers have made running a trucking company a very difficult endeavor.
Although in use by many different industries, ISO and other quality programs are rarely used by trucking companies. In `Shifting Gears', the authors present case studies and easy-to-follow information that carriers and shippers can use to improve the processes related to shipping and trucking. Based on the premise that quality is a framework for improvement, the authors identify eight specific ISO quality management principles within the book:
Customer Focus
Leadership
Involvement of People
Process Approach
System Approach to Management
Continual Improvement
Factual Approach to Decision Making
Mutually Beneficial Supplier Relationships
Because the book is written in non-technical terms, trucking companies of all sizes will be able to learn and apply the lessons and advice within the book. Reading `Shifting Gears' will not make companies' experts in ISO 9000 but it will clearly explain the importance of structured quality programs and get them on the right path.
As someone who has spent the last 13 years in transportation and who is a certified Six Sigma Black Belt, I can attest that the trucking industry must embrace the quality principles of ISO and Six Sigma. Issues such as backhauls, revenue generation, freight pay and audit, OS&D, pick ups and deliveries, operating ratios, maintenance, etc., can be managed better through the use of a structured quality program such as ISO 9000.

Book Description
This is not an economics book. It is a book about the application of economic principles and concepts in decision making related to space activities. The book is primarily tutorial and elaborates upon concepts and methodology and their applications. Emphasis is placed upon applications with typical results of performed analyses presented to demonstrate concepts and methods.
The use of mathematical and simulation models serves as the underpinning for much of the presented materials. A number of models are described with numerous applications presented. The specific models considered have been selected to demonstrate the role that a structured thought process can play in the decision process. Since most decisions relating to technology development, product design, capital expenditures, and investments involve uncertainty and risk, a number of the selected models, developed methodologies, and presented examples explicitly and quantitatively consider uncertainty and risk.
The objective of this book is to put economic analysis into perspective with respect to real-world decision making in the space industry. It will expand the perspective of the reader with respect to the type of tools and analyses that might be brought to bear on complex business and government problems.

Material NOT for the Timid Space Advocate.......2007-01-07
Economic Principles Applied to Space Industry Decisions is a tough read. Perhaps due to my own challenged knowledge of two more complex subjects, e.g. applied economics and rocket science, I had to work at this book taking each chapter slowly, deliberately, and re-read time and again to attempt to gain the nuggets of knowledge the authors sought seriously to give me. One must really have passion for the subject matter to enjoy this book. Even as a space human destiny advocate armed with an undergraduate minor in economics and near-completion of graduate master of science in space studies, this was a challenging book with calculus tossed about with economic graphs. I would recommend the authors do a more simplified version of the book and seek models based on the NewSpace industry now emerging, e.g. Virgin Galactic, SpaceX, XCOR, AirLaunch, t/Space, SpaceHab, Bigelow Aerospace, and the smaller, more flexiable firms. Another niche for these authors would be to focus a text on the decline of the American share of the international launch market that tanked in the 21st Century.

Book Description
Brand-new chapter exclusive to the paperback edition
Colonel David Hunt has dedicated his career to fighting terrorism. A U.S. Army veteran for nearly thirty years, he has helped take out an active terrorist camp, trained the FBI and Special Forces in counterterrorism tactics, and served as security adviser to six different Olympic Games.
And Colonel Hunt is angry. Why? Because even after the attacks on our country and on Americans around the world, the people charged with protecting us—the politicians and the bureaucrats in the military and in intelligence—still aren’t getting the job done. In They Just Don’t Get It, you’ll learn:
• How many of the government’s recent “reforms” are actually counterproductive
• How we can fight this war and still safeguard our civil liberties and the American way of life
• What you can do to keep your family safe
• How to fix the intelligence disaster (and yes, the politicians in D.C. still haven't fixed it)
As politicians posture and pundits bicker, we’re losing sight of the problem: We’re still not equipped to win the war on terror. Hunt shows us there are changes we can make at every level—as individual citizens, as a government, and as a military power—in order to win the war on terror and ensure our survival as a free, proud, and strong nation.
Customer Reviews:
good, common sense-based book.......2007-09-05
Col. David Hunt's book is a good read. He is not the most polished writer around -- the book is written more like an extended conversation -- but he gets his points across. The book tends to get redundant at times, but it remains an interesting book to read which one can easily complete in one evening or two. If even a small fraction of what Hunt alledges is true, Americans should be very concerned about our safety and the glaring lack of leadership in our country.
They Just Don't Get It.......2007-06-12
Of the 30 books I've read over the last year, this is the worst. If I were to equate this with anything written in the last 5 years it would be the last book by Ann Colter. I'm glad I forgot the title of that book. An uneducated person may like books like this, but can come away from the experience with a pedestrian view of history.
Hunt Should Be The Secretary of Defense.......2006-09-14
Col. David Hunt has written a superb plan for fighting the war on terror. It is bold, decisive, and politically incorrect. It is also far better than what we are doing or anyone else is talking about.
The author traces the history of terrorism from the 1972 Munich Olympics through 9/11 and beyond. He shows how our leaders have been ineffective in responding. He is not partisan. He reviews botches by Carter, Reagan, Clinton, and Bush.
He also critiques many problems with our current approach to dealing with terrorists. Some of those include the following: Failing to use the best troops (special ops.) effectively and fully, allowing Pakistan to harbor bin Laden, failing to secure the Iraqi borders allowing the Syrians and Iranians to continue to supply terrorists, continuing to be cozy with the Saudis in spite of their financing of terror, having too much bureaucracy interfering with decision making, and many more.
Along with the problems, the author also presents numerous solutions. Some of those are politically incorrect; Some may seem outrageous. Most are worthwhile and should be pondered and discussed. Some of his ideas (including some highly controversial ones) are as follows: a total reorganization of intelligence with unity of command, de-bureaucratizing the defense and intelligence arenas, creation of a 'Terrorist Killing Agency', mandatory national service (not necessarily military) as a way to overcome personnel shortages, and the elimination of the ill conceived and nonsensical color coding system that the Homeland Security Dept. created. There are many more as well.
While I certainly don't agree with all of his ideas, I do think that every American elected official and voter should read this book. Its ideas should be debated and considered. If several of these were implemented, we would all be much safer.
A Must Read To Understand Winning The War On Terror.......2006-08-26
In his mundane, conversational style, Colonel Hunt cites many of the terrorist attacks which have killed innocent citizens, profiles the killers responsible for these atrocities and offers political as well as logistical solutions to combat terrorists in this insurgent style of war.
Detractors will hurl insults at the messenger and his message to complicate his clearly stated, basic premise: This is not a traditional war. We must retaliate against these killers using our special forces, trained to defeat terrorist aggression without bureaucratic interference from politicians and the military hierarchy.
This book is must read for all who understandably feel confused by the doublespeak of our politicians, military leaders and journalists.
Good views expressed poorly........2006-08-23
Much of what Col Hunt has to say is quite interesting and I agree with his views and arguments, however, the book is more like a +200 page rant and rave than a well written book. I felt like he was just complaining most of the time about what's wrong with politicians and he offers "simple" solutions to all of our problems which are entirely unrealistic. It's a good example of why are our government is not run by the military and why we need civilians ultimately in control. A great man, who has served his country with great honor, but in my view is not a very good author. Ultimately, I did not enjoy this book, and struggled to force myself to finish it.
Book Description
No more politics—just the truth about what we can and must do to protect ourselves.
Fox News military analyst Colonel David Hunt has dedicated his career to fighting terrorism. A twenty-nine-year U.S. Army veteran, he has helped take out an active terrorist camp, trained the FBI and Special Forces in counterterrorism tactics, and served as security adviser to six different Olympic Games.
And Colonel Hunt is angry. Why? Because even after the terrorist attacks on our country and on Americans around the world, the people charged with protecting us—the politicians and the bureaucrats in military and intelligence—still aren’t getting the job done.
They Just Don’t Get It provides a much-needed wake-up call to all Americans. As politicians posture and pundits bicker, we’re losing sight of the fundamental problem: We’re still not equipped to win the War on Terror. In fact, the terrorist threat is far worse than we feared, as made frighteningly clear by the fifty pages of documents published here for the first time—including a shocking manual taken from the terrorists themselves.
But instead of just complaining, Colonel Hunt tells us exactly what we must do—without regard to political game-playing—to emerge victorious in the challenge that history has given us. These are changes we can make at every level—as individual citizens, as a government, and as a military power. As he shows in this book, while the government and our military lead the fight to protect us, ordinary citizens can and must contribute.
They Just Don’t Get It reveals:
• What you can do to keep your family safe
• How many of the government’s recent “reforms” are mere window dressing or, worse, counterproductive
• How we can fight this war and still safeguard our civil liberties and the American way of life
• How to fix the intelligence disaster (and yes, the politicians in D.C. still haven’t fixed it)
• How we got into this mess in the first place: it’s mostly because our government let the problem fester for three decades
Colonel Hunt is no cautious bureaucrat or finger-pointer looking for political gain. He is a straight shooter with deep insight into what’s happening in the War on Terror—on the ground and in the government. They Just Don’t Get It lays out in clear and compelling terms the steps we must take—all of us—to win the War on Terror and ensure our survival as a free, proud, and strong nation.
From They Just Don’t Get It
We’re fighting a war for our very survival, so we’d better figure out how to win. That’s why I’m writing this book—to show us how we can win, how we can protect ourselves. As a Fox News military analyst, I’m paid to offer insight into how our armed forces are conducting the fight against our enemies. But this book shows that to win the War on Terror we need to concern ourselves with more than just military tactics.
For one thing, we need to look at what our political leaders are doing. The sad truth is that they still don’t get it.
Then there’s intelligence. You’ve heard about our intelligence failures, but I doubt you know how bad it really is—even after the “reforms.” I’m going to tell you.
And another critical dimension to this story usually gets overlooked—what you can do. The fact is, you can do a lot. Hell, you must do a lot.

The REAL DEAL.......2007-05-12
Great book for those interested in reality, versus the political garbagr being spewed by our "representatives" in Congress and the stories being relayed by the media outlets...Colonel Hunt is correct "They Just Don't Get It"... and neither does the majority ...
Sometimes the truth hurts - Col Hunt beats you over the head with it!!!!.......2007-05-10
This is required reading for those who have doubts about terrorism and our ability to deal with it. This is required reading for those who believe we are doing what is necessary to win. This is required reading for the spineless masses following the "leadership" of this country (from both sides of the aisle) down a path of death, destruction, and failure.
Col Hunt's ability to speak frankly and lay it on the line in this very Non-PC manner really speaks to everyday Americans. It is boldly written, in your face, and so scary that it will leave you shaking your head in disbelief. His resume/qualifications to speak to this topic are above reproach, he's been there, he's seen it first hand, the good and the bad. 10-20 years from now, if things do not change, this man will be looked at as one of those bold enough to say what needed to be said. It will be a shame to allow his words to go unnoticed. READ THIS BOOK!
Required reading for every American.......2006-10-31
Easy to read, full of common sense, this book should be read by every American.
On the mark.......2006-09-11
I think that Col. Hunt has written a superb book of the challenges facing the US regarding the terrorist threats to us all. He writes in a very deliberate and to the point style that I find refreshing.
Fact vs fiction.......2006-04-26
Col Hunt spells out the truth of the war we're in as compared to the bias of the media.

Keep an open mind...........2007-10-12
It never ceases to amaze me how people who are in fairly privileged positions in life react so vehemently and violently to the least criticism of the social order from which they and their parents before them have benefitted. I believe that Dr. Deborah Tannen's "You Just Don't Understand, Men and Women in Conversation" is a much better book that explains more objectively and empirically the cultural/cognitive differences between men and women; yet still I do not think this work should just be dismissed.
While I do not believe it is useful for anyone to accept the role of victim and take on the helplessness implied in such a label, I also am tired of men who cannot tolerate being asked for once in their lives to seriously examine the perspectives and experiences of women. (I am also tired of women who have so completely bought into a corporate and public policy culture of hierarchical competition that they dismiss the realities of a diversity of perspectives along with their potential advantages.)
As a negotiator, I would be a complete idiot to exclude the worldviews, experiences and cognitive processes of any particular group of people that I was either representing or with whom I was negotiating. Life experience shapes leadership and world views. Any successful negotiation concerning either individuals or communities and nations must necessarily include input from both men and women (or critical concerns/needs get left out and what is agreed upon becomes untenable in actual practice).
My advice: stop reacting with such violent emotion when being asked to expand your understanding of human beings, and accept that different people have had different life experiences and therefore hold different world views than you do. Knowledge is empowerment, not just for the person you are being asked to empathize with, but for yourself. If you are truly critical of this work, then seek out alternative voices on the same topic -- the true differences in life experience and cognitive processes that can be influenced by gender; such books as Deborah Tannen's. Fry and others, while excellent sources for negotiation in general, do not even touch upon these areas.
We may be inclined to prefer objectivity, but most of this world in reality is influenced more often by passions. Only in understanding the origin of those passions can we hope to achieve fair and successful outcomes.
Useful and Constructive.......2005-11-21
This is a useful and constructive book, not a rant. I'm giving They Don't Get It Do They? five stars because it's a really good book. It might be helpful to quote from Warren Bennis' own words about this book, as they appear on my copy which is the paperback edition: "Kathleen Reardon has placed her perceptive stethoscope to the proverbial 'glass ceiling' and discovered some novel ways to shatter that obstacle (for women and, interestingly enough, for men, too). Finally, a book that helps men and women learn some terrific ways to communicate to make the workplace more productive, creative, convivial and fun."
File under: "Embarrassed that any trees died for this trash".......2000-12-02
I also was forced to read this in the MBA program at USC and can vouch for the other former-student's review here. Our class also returned our copies of this book to the campus bookstore. If you are interested in making your workplace cutting-edge, look to Noel Tichy and Warren Bennis, for starters. If you're looking for negotiation and persuasion material, try Roger Fisher's brilliant "Getting To Yes" instead. This book isn't even bottom-of-the-birdcage material.
It's really not that bad (in the workplace).......2000-05-14
I haven't read gender-related titles in the past, and was having some difficulty at work so thought I would give it a try. I certainly hope there are better texts out there....
I've worked in male dominated companies for over a decade and am currently the only female manager on my boss's staff of twelve. Although there are issues, they are not nearly as blatant and nearly as bad as Dr. Reardon professes. Although I am sure that the boys club still does exist, I read the book wondering if this wasn't just a rehashing off old wounds. We tend to frequently look externally for reasons why we are not advancing or are having difficulties in the work place - easily identifiable reasons why such as gender - even if they are not the root cause.
That said, the book does have some very good points, which would apply both to males and females. I have learned some techniques that I will use on the job and will become even more assertive in identifying and letting my coworkers know when I feel they are undermining my credibility and leadership.
The most blatant piece of feminist trash available today........1999-04-14
I was forced to read this as a required text in a Negotiation & Persuasion class in the MBA program at USC, where Dr. Reardon teaches. I and many others in the class were so infuriated by the relentless "I am a victim because I am female" propaganda throughout the entirety of the book that we all returned the text to the bookstore upon finishing it because we could not stand the thought of Dr. Reardon making a dime off of sales to us. The professor that taught the class was so embarrassed by having to assign the text (it was required, oddly enough, by the head of the department who by mere coincidence, I'm sure, happened to be Dr. Reardon), that she sheepishly cut off discussion of the text after only a few minutes. The only victims we were able to find were students who were hoodwinked into paying $1900 to learn negotiation skills but in reality were held captive to the rantings of Dr. Reardon's feminist soapbox. If you are looking to waste your time trying to find out all the ways that men are EVIL and should be eradicated from the workplace, this is your bible. If, however, you are looking for inspiration on how to make your organization a great one for all employees, male and female, I'd look elsewhere, like Warren Bennis' Organizing Genius or the Jan Carlzen's classic Moments of Truth.
