Randy goes into depth about some of the pitfalls that bike retailers make. Since this industry has very tight margins this book will help a shop owner maximize their profits and take their shop to the next level. He has pro formas, spreadsheets and detailed info on administering the bike retail shop. He goes into depth on marketing and sales, I estimate I have improved my sales by about 20-25% using some of the techniques and strategies set forth by the author. Shop owners should have their employees read this book too, so they will understand what it takes to be the owner. One improvement I would ask for is to have it updated with a companion web site with some of the tools in the book in e-form for easy downloading.

1 out of 5 stars Written like you're starting the Wal-Mart of bicycles........1997-11-07

If you are considering starting or improving a bicycle business that has as the objective making a million bucks, this might be a book for you to read. If you are thinking about a small, neighborhood bicycle business, use the money that you'd spent on this book to buy some more tires and tubes.

I have been researching the retail food industry for a real world product introduction, and have searched a number of articles and books. No book in the market spells out in great clarity the details in food merchandising and supermarket retailing as this book does. Other books such as "How to Sell to Supermarkets" by Julian Hnalder have hardly 1/5th the useful content this gives. This is an excellent compilation of super market information, even though it is few decades old. Exciting sections on Pricing, Coupons, Buying allowances, Margins, sales presentation etc. A must have for a food industry entreprenuer.

                    5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2001-10-17

Theodore Modis, a renowned strategist and futurist, analyzes the evolution of products, businesses, industries and economies using the seasons - winter, spring, summer and fall - as metaphors for natural cycles. In this innovative, intriguing examination, he thoroughly explains how to make business decisions and plans based on natural cycles. This semi-academic book is not at all dry, but by no means lightweight. We [...] highly recommend this timely book to business owners, managers and leaders.

4 out of 5 stars Great for Students Preparing to Enter Corporate America.......2000-04-28

Author Theodore Modis feels that the best way to Conquer Uncertainty is by focusing on the evolution of competition and business seasons over time. He offers practical advice, and the do's and don'ts in response to these seasonal changes. His aim is to shed new light on business problems, by looking at the "big picture" of a company and also evaluating a company's life cycle by defining which stage of the "S-Curve" the company is in.

I definitely recommend this book as a requirement/supplement to business economics and management courses. It is very important for students, especially those who are preparing to graduate and enter the corporate world to understand how business cycles operate. This book gives great examples from economists perspective, as well as a manager's point of view. I think that economic and management majors can significantly benefit from a book of this nature. It is imperative for students to grasp the concepts that Modis attempts to display, before entering the work force, so that they will not be blinded to how society and the economy operates.

3 out of 5 stars Engineering background may help in reading this book.......1999-01-14

This book is very technical for the average person However, it gives insight about how to predict the future, at least a tool to do it. Forecasting is never be precise and always rough. So, in that respect, this book is OK

                    5 out of 5 stars ABSTRACT.......2004-07-05

The nature of the firm has changed since Ronald Coase invented the theory of the firm in 1937. An important change is the advent of modern information and communication technology (ICT) that altered the business environment. This book studies the transformation of corporate organization by analyzing the impact of a changing information and communication environment on firm boundaries. Therefore I look at firm boundaries in the manufacturing and the media sector. These two sectors are selected to illustrate important differences in the change of firm boundaries. Although both showed an impact of ICT, the direction of this change has been different because of contrary product characteristics. The reason is that ICT in the manufacturing sector mainly leads to communication and coordination improvements, while it induces problems to protect intellectual property rights (IPRs) in the media sector.

In the first part the manufacturing sector is analyzed. Hypotheses regarding the impact of ICT on the governance of business activity are developed based on arguments from Transaction Cost Economics (TCE). I subsequently check these hypotheses against manufacturing industry data in a panel regression design. It is explored to what extent the international dissemination of ICT acted as a catalyst in changing organizational structures. Therefore I compare the degree of vertical integration of manufacturing firms in different countries over time and analyze the role of ICT in this context. The analysis is controlled for alternative determinants of firm boundaries including the institutional, economic and political environment. Vertical disintegration, i.e. slimmer firms, can be found particularly in business environments with high ICT penetration. This can be regarded as tentative evidence for ICT-triggered outsourcing.

The second part focuses on firm boundary changes in the media sector. Media firm boundaries appear to move in the opposite direction: recent increases in vertical integration by major media firms are analyzed regarding the impact of ICT. Using an eclectic theory synopsis, IPRs are identified as an important variable in the relationship between ICT and media firm boundaries. Hence, the impact of ICT on media firm boundaries is studied indirectly by looking at the connection between ICT and IPRs: I test the effect of ICT penetration on recorded music sales figures in a panel regression. The tests show a significant negative impact of ICT on music sales what can be interpreted as a loss of IPRs via ICT-enabled music piracy. Music firms loose sales in business environments with enhanced technological copying capabilities. I conjecture that vertical integration increases are a response of media firms to regain and maintain control over the production and distribution of their products. In addition, the effect of IPR protection is taken into account. Recent regulatory action in form of international treaties initiated by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) seems to contribute to contain IPR loss.

In my empirical analyses I find evidence that supports the view that the ICT shock has an ambivalent impact on firm boundaries. The comparison of the manufacturing and the media sector shows that distinct product characteristics like intangibility determine the direction of the ICT-induced shift in firm boundaries. ICT plays a role in the fragmentation of value-chains in the manufacturing sector but can provide vertical integration incentives in the media sector.

                      Book Description

Throughout their history, forests have been the playthings of powerful external forces beside those of trade--changes of climate, population, agriculture, sources of energy, war and many others. Any realistic planning for the future of forests cannot ignore them; forests must not be treated in isolation. This book discusses these changes and their significance, and speculates about the future of forests, forestry and timber.
"Changing Landscapes" written by Duncan Poore--one of the most influential figures in forest management for the last two decades--is a history of the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO). Like its predecessor "No Timber Without Trees" (1992) this book should be influential in the continuing international debate about the future of forests, in the work of the UN Forum on Forests, in determining the most practical approaches to improving the management of tropical forests and in the renegotiation of the International Tropical Timber Agreement itself.

                          Book Description

This book examines changing work relationships in industrialized economies within the context of economic restructuring and demographic variables. The goal of this book is to examine experiences of industrialized economies in dealing with changing work relationships and discuss policy implications of creating such work relationships. The thesis of the book is that non-standard employment forms in restructuring economies affected all workers, but particularly females and the youth. Other demographic variables of education level, race/ethnicity/immigrant status, ability, and economic class were also underlying forces in the construction and arrangements of non-standard work. Research shows both positive and negative effects of changing work relationships on workers, though there is no conclusive result whether one or the other affect is stronger. The discussion in this book pays attention to this debate and sheds light on it. This book differs from others in its comprehensiveness of the coverage of work relationships, referring to part-time, temporary/ casual, telework and self-employment without employees; in its examination of a variety of variables including gender, age, race/ethnicity/immigrant status, ability, education level, and economic class; in the analysis of the topic in relation with the economic restructuring; and in its initiative in collaboration of researchers from a variety of backgrounds and regions of the world that have expertise on changing work relationships.
