Stressing the concrete applications of economic forecasting, Practical Business Forecasting is accessible to a wide-range of readers, requiring only a familiarity with basic statistics. The text focuses on the use of models in forecasting, explaining how to build practical forecasting models that produce optimal results. In a clear and detailed format, the text covers estimating and forecasting with single and multi- equation models, univariate time-series modeling, and determining forecasting accuracy. Great book, full of insights gained by reviewing the research and through testing. It shines a harsh light on many false assumptions among marketers and non marketers alike. But also it gives actionable advice on what to do to improve marketing results. I've written all over it and will re-read often.

5 out of 5 stars Good Advice, Good Ideas.......2005-06-02

      This little book is different.

Most marketing books tell you how to do the same old things: market studies, focus groups, testing, etc.

This one is different. It is basically an analysis of research involving advertisements, brands, customers, and sales reps. The format is basically a series of little two page points. The left hand page is labeled "Scientific Advice" and the right hand is "Practical Ideas."

A lot of these are the old standbys like: KISS, Keep it Simple Stupid. Make your message so a ten year old can understand it. But even the old standbys need to be thought over every once in a while.

And some of the scientific advice directly contradicts the old message. Selling the sizzle rather than the steak for instance is often a mistake. And he gives the evidence to prove it.

Most of the messages seem to me to be more concerned with a smaller company, even a start-up rather than a giant operation. There's more on selling new widgets rather than convincing people to buy Coke rather than Pepsi.

An inexpensive little book, even one idea for your next marketing project will cover its cost many times over, and I got much more than one idea out of it.

      Book Description

Financial market volatility forecasting is one of today's most important areas of expertise for professionals and academics in investment, option pricing, and financial market regulation. While many books address financial market modelling, no single book is devoted primarily to the exploration of volatility forecasting and the practical use of forecasting models. A Practical Guide to Forecasting Financial Market Volatility provides practical guidance on this vital topic through an in-depth examination of a range of popular forecasting models. Details are provided on proven techniques for building volatility models, with guide-lines for actually using them in forecasting applications.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nice collection of recipes but not for academic interest.......2007-09-24

I read the book in a hurry to return it to a colleague who lent me a copy. Indeed my focused intention was to seek for a few items I would like to see in a book as opposed to a review article. So my comments will be incomplete and potentially prejudicious.

      (1) The Preface states that "only volatility models that have been tested for the forecasting performance are selected for further analysis and discussion". I am a bit disappointed to find the multifractal approach entirely absent from the text. The method has been analyzed in details (out-of-sample tests) by Thomas Lux (Univ of Kiel) and thus should be included.

      (2) The volatility proxies are mentioned only in passing, for example, Alizadeh, Brandt, and Diebold's range-based proxy (section 1.3.2). These authors clarified the advantages/importance of the range.

      (3) The text provides a (practical) recipe but not the philosophy of why volatility forecasting models should work (and thus can be trusted.) To the best of my knowledge, this philosophy is barely addressed in published articles in the field anyway (apart from an empirical or pragmatic attitude). The book makes no further advance in this conceptual direction.

I rate the book at 4 stars for its potential value in practical use.

3 out of 5 stars Not very helpful.......2005-03-24

Does not deserve a high rating. The content is pale and weak. Most of the suggestion the author gives are really plain rules of thumb. For example, the book suggests the use of Pareto analysis. The topic is done in around 100 words.

Not a book for people who search for a serious discussion of planning skill.

        4 out of 5 stars A Good Read!.......2001-04-24

All books that promise to teach you how to manage your time and your tasks more efficiently must be judged by one simple measure: Do they offer techniques that you actually can implement into your life? In the case of Powerful Planning Skills, the answer is an unqualified yes. Although the slim book at first looks simplistic, don't be deceived. Peter Capezio has written a nuts-and-bolts guide that essentially is a straightforward, interactive workbook. The text zeros in on strategic and personal planning styles, while also offering information to help you understand why your past efforts to become the world's best planner might have gone astray. Like most books on time management, this one includes much that you've heard before, but if you're looking to walk away with few new planning tricks, we [...] recommend this book to you.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guidance in a concise format!.......2000-04-09

I was just placed in charge of a large project and I was looking for a book that would give me some level of comfort that I was on the right track in planning what needs to be done. This book delivered exactly what I needed.

The book addresses different types of planning -- such as strategic, tactical, personal, etc., and steps you through the basics of developing a sound plan -- from defining your purpose or your goal to setting objectives, on through implementing your plan.

The book not only tells you what you need to do, but it tells you how you need to do it. It does this by providing a list of questions you should ask yourself about your project as you move from one phase of planning through to the end. There's also a case study that you follow from beginning to end to make sure you understand the concepts and the impact good planning has on achieving your goals.

You're given the information you need without having to wade through hundreds of pages of boring text to find it. Everything you need to know is provided in an easy to read concise format.

I highly recommend this book if you want to make sure you're developing a thorough plan that will lead you to success.

          Book Description

Sales forecasting and market analysis are the cornerstones of the planning process. Yet, these two tasks are usually performed by people with only limited training in either area because most firms do not have full-time forecasters/market analysts. The authors acknowledge this situation and attempt to describe the key techniques for forecasting sales and analyzing markets in a format that meets the needs of an audience with limited quantitative skills. In addition to its "basic" approach, another strength of this book is that it combines the coverage of two key activities--forecasting and market analysis--that are performed by the same person in most middle-sized (and smaller) firms. The book's contents and format were designed with two audiences in mind: persons assigned to develop forecasts and market analyses, but who are not specialists in either area, and persons who will be incorporating these results in their planning and decision making. The major portion of the book is devoted to the three basic categories of forecasting models--time series, causal, and judgmental--emphasizing the most widely used models in each category. Special attention is also given to the sources for obtaining the data needed to make forecasts and analyze markets. The latter part of the book describes procedures for developing market and sales potentials, methods for segmenting markets, and some analytic techniques such as conjoint analysis and cluster analysis, gaining increased usage among market analysts.

          Book Description

Assisted Living 2000 - Practical Strategies for the Next Millennium is the second book in Moore's Trilogy of Assisted Living Strategies. His last book, Assisted Living - Pure and Simple Development and Operating Strategies, was a best seller in the industry.

The 34 chapters and more than 325 pages of Assisted Living 2000 covers leading edge information on strategies, tactics, industry benchmarks, rules of thumb, current trends and future marketplace impacts. Learn pure and simple winning strategies and money making ideas communicated with sophisticated simplicity. Real world problems are identified and cost- effective, practical solutions are provided.

The book provides convenient "random access" for the reader. This means that you can scan the detailed table of contents and jump to the chapter addressing the specific issue of interest to you on any given day. The book strikes a delicate balance between leading edge ideas and theories combined with proven experience and trends observed consistently in the marketplace. These observations are the culmination of a 16-year odyssey where Moore has been in an average of three senior housing markets a week, 50 weeks a year. During Moore's work, he has lived briefly in more than 30 senior living communities in an attempt to get as close as possible to the resident, the front line staff and the local competition.

Portions of this book are based on the monthly column written by Jim Moore entitled Assisted Living/Senior Housing appearing in Contemporary Long Term Care Magazine - a leading industry periodical. Moore has been authoring this column for more than seven years.

A unique feature of the book is the detailed profiling of a typical 80 unit assisted living project; using industry comparable and financial factors that are representative of existing projects in approximately 70 percent of the U.S. markets in the 1998 time frame. Financial factors are presented in 1998 dollars using the prevailing interest rates of that time period.

For the experienced senior housing professional and their staff, this book can be a useful checklist of appropriate strategies and initiatives. For those who are new to our industry, it can act as a strategic planning handbook.

            Book Description

The globalization of business and the ubiquity of available data in the information age are the driving forces behind the increasing importance of economic forecasting. In order to remain competitive, private and public organizations alike must employ forecasting techniques effectively. Hoshmand emphasizes the application and practical use of such techniques rather than their theoretical grounding. Decision makers and students who have a solid background in economics and statistics will find this book eminently useful. After discussing the role of forecasting in business decisions, the author moves on to smoothing techniques, regression models, and the advanced time series models of Box-Jenkins. Of particular help to practitioners is the concluding chapter on how to communicate forecasts to management. Forecasting professionals and researchers will benefit greatly from the information presented by Hoshmand, especially in their role as advisors to management. Few forecasters and even fewer managers will have had the luxury to remain fully informed of the new developments in this rapidly expanding field. Meanwhile, the importance of accurate forecasting to every realm of corporate strategy--production, inventory, purchasing, accounting, marketing, finance, and acquisitions decisions, to name a few--has increased exponentially due to the proliferation of data, the heating up of global competition, and the softening of many markets. No one today can afford to remain ignorant of the importance of economic forecasting for business decisions.

This book is aimed at providing a framework for African issues in the 21st century. Apart from its African-centered approach, it argues that previously marginalized areas of research require in-depth study. It also introduces new areas of interest absent in existing works. The book pays particular attention to the relative success of African countries and regions in their attempt to find solutions to Africa's problems and the changing role in African states in international relations.

                Book Description

A daring marriage of philosophical theory and practical politics, this collection is the first of Gianni Vattimo's many books to combine his intellectual pursuits with his public and political life. Vattimo is a paradoxical figure, at once a believing Christian and a vociferous critic of the Catholic Church, an outspoken liberal but not a former communist, and a recognized authority on Nietzsche and Heidegger as well as a prominent public intellectual and member of the European parliament. Building on his unique position as a philosopher and politician, Vattimo takes on some of the most pressing questions of our time: Is it still possible, long after Nietzsche proclaimed the death of God, to talk of moral imperatives, individual rights, or political freedom? Are these values still relevant in today's world?

Tackling these crucial issues, Gianni Vattimo argues that nihilism is not the absence of meaning but a recognition of a plurality of meanings; it is not the end of civilization but the beginning of new social paradigms. Commonly associated with the pessimistic belief that all of existence is meaningless, nihilism, as a philosophical principle, is far less sensational -- it is the ethical doctrine that there are no moral absolutes or infallible natural laws, that "truth" is inescapably subjective. Because the conditions for equality and liberty are not "naturally" given, society must actively create these ideals or it will inevitably fall prey to irrationality, prejudice, and oppression. Vattimo contends that the infighting, timidity, and confusion that have overtaken contemporary liberal thought and politics are the products a prolonged and indulgent mourning over the loss of the transcendental father figure -- any institution or power structure that defines truth, knowledge, and reality. Until humanity overcomes its need for external authority -- whether it be organized religion, the nation-state, or free-market capitalism -- emancipation will remain unattainable. Collecting fourteen of Vattimo's most influential essays on ethics, politics, and law, Nihilism and Emancipation is a provocative reevaluation of meaning, values, and the idea of freedom in Western culture.
