Optimization methods have been considered in many articles, monographs, and handbooks. However, experts continue to experience difficulties in correctly stating optimization problems in engineering. These troubles typically emerge when trying to define the set of feasible solutions, i.e. the constraints imposed on the design variables, functional relationships, and criteria. The Parameter Space Investigation (PSI) method was developed specifically for the correct statement and solution of engineering optimization problems. It is implemented in the MOVI 1.0 software package, a tutorial version of which is included in this book. The PSI method and MOVI 1.0 software package have a wide range of applications. The PSI method can be successfully used for the statement and solution of the following multicriteria problems: design, identification, design with control, the optional development of prototypes, finite element models, and the decomposition and aggregation of large-scale systems. Audience: The PSI method will be of interest to researchers, graduate students, and engineers who work in engineering, mathematical modelling and industrial mathematics, and in computer and information science.

This book presents the fundamentals of the Parameter Space Investigation method for the statement and solution of optimization problems, a powerful new tool for multicriteria optimization in engineering. Unlike the majority of other optimization techniques, the PSI method combines the formation of the set of feasible solutions, the sensitivity analysis of performance criteria, and optimization.
The PSI method is original. It offers designers an instrument which enables the construction of the feasible solution set with allowance for any number of performance criteria, to select Edgeworth-Pareto optimal solutions which cannot be improved in all performance criteria simultaneously, to find relationships between different performance criteria and between the criteria and the design variables, and to correct the mathematical model of the object to be designed if necessary.
A distinctive feature of this volume is that it contains a number of essays by leading specialists from various industries in which the PSI method has been successfully applied. The work is richly illustrated with numerous examples.

This is the first comprehensive book to present, in English, the multicriteria methodology for decision aiding. In the foreword the distinctive features and main ideas of the European School of MCDA are outlined. The twelve chapters are essentially expository in nature, but scholarly in treatment. Some questions, which are too often neglected in the literature on decision theory, such as how is a decision made, who are the actors, what is a decision aiding model, how to define the set of alternatives, are discussed. Examples are used throughout the book to illustrate the various concepts. Ways to model the consequences of each alternative and building criteria taking into account the inevitable imprecisions, uncertainties and indeterminations are described and illustrated. The three classical operational approaches of MCDA: synthesis in one criterion (including MAUT), synthesis by outranking relations, interactive local judgements, are studied. This methodology tries to be a theoretical or intellectual framework directed towards formulating recommendations for action.
Audience:The book is addressed to graduate students, postgraduates and researchers in management sciences, operations research or decision analysis, as well as all scientists who use models and methods for guiding decisions. In addition all those who, in business and administration, wish to take part in decision-making through scientific reasoning will be interested. The contents of the book are organized in such a way as to help individuals with different backgrounds and interests chart an appropriate course through the chapters (see Reader's Guide in the front-matter).

Excellent book for someone seeking new jobs.......2006-04-30

Thanks to this book I got more than 99% on my Professional Writing class. This book isn't just for college students; it is good for anyone who is in the market for new job. It talked about business communication (it's on the title) but that includes oral, written, how to do research paper, how to write proposals, what to expect and dress during an interview, how to write a follow up letter (thank you note), types of cover letters and how to tap into the hidden job market, types of resumes and online job search, e-mailing, types of letters (like fundraising) etc. (the list goes on and on). This is an excellent book for anyone learning about the current job market or what to expect. Ms. Locker is an excellent career coach and the book proves it. I applied to few job postings online (as a test on this book), and got replies from all of them and was called for interviews. I don't know about others but I'm very impressed with this book.

A good primer for a student or review for the experienced manager who wants to hone communications skills. It includes information and exercises on just about every mode and type of communication. I will not give it 4 stars as the web site does not have much worth looking at and the CD is pretty useless as well.

Effective Business Writing Text.......2001-09-13

Kitty Locker's Business and Administrative Communication, 5th ed. is the most considerate educational text I've reviewed for my business writing course. My classes typically include upper level English majors, but it is not uncommon for business majors and ESL students to register too. This student diversity usually presents difficulties because their writing abilities vary tremendously. Thankfully, I found Locker's text. It provides examples of real-life business writing and Internet communication situations highlighted with graphics, sidebars, tables and pictures colorfully presented. This textual consideration, I found, enables students to grasp both the theory and the reality of business communication outside their academic walls.
