Comment on "Calm At Work".......2003-12-31
Do you think you have so many things to do but do not have enough time? Do you feel stressful in meeting lots of deadlines? Do the changes make you feel anxious? If yes, you must read this book ¡§Calm at Work¡¨ since these are parts of stress, and this book can help you to deal with these stress. This book offers some simple and straightforward techniques for overcoming stress on the job and keeping people relax and calm at work.
The author stated what stress is first, and he mentioned the seven steps to be calm, including 1) take this first step, 2) life-changing choices, 3) employers to choose from, 4) sanity-saving understandings, 5) life-enriching pieces of advice, 6) areas where you can make a difference, and 7) causes of stress in the workplace. The seven main causes of stress in workplace are time, control, self, social, change, physical and lifestyle habits. After mentioning the causes of stress, the author suggested a series of solutions for each cause. Therefore, when people know their causes of stress, they can read that solutions accordingly. For me, most of my stresses come from time and self since I always think that I do not have enough time to do my things. For time, the author suggested some solutions such as control time, depressurize deadlines and end procrastination. For self, the author suggested planning to be calm, a positive change, dealing with worries and drive control. These advices and solutions are practical and useful for me to reduce stress.
Apart from specific solutions for each cause, the author also mentioned some general suggestions for dealing any type of stress, including deep breath, use of subconscious, doing exercises, taking a rest, planning, thinking positively and to be more get involved and enthusiastic when doing something. These techniques are really useful for everyone to overcome the stress especially for those who are working.
After reading this book, I have tried some of the techniques for dealing the stress and they really help. Whenever I feel stressful, I would have a deep breath for calming down myself first, and I breathed deeply and slowly. Sometimes, I would also do some simple exercises for instant relief from stress. I have learned to write down my plan, I wrote down all of the works, prioritized them and end procrastination, so I could finish the work more efficiently and also make sure that the most important things are done. I have changed my attitude, I think more positively than before and be more optimistic and enthusiastic. This makes me live more happily and do things more efficiently with less stress. I would try to take a rest which is about 30 minutes in a day even it is a busy day, in the rest time, I would stop doing anything. I think most of these techniques are practical and can reduce my stress level and also make me to be more relaxed.
In facing this challenging and highly competitive world, I think everyone would be under stress, therefore, I strongly recommend this book to all people. After reading this book, you¡¦ll feel relaxed, positive and fulfilled. I believe that everyone can benefit from reading this book.
Comment.......2003-10-23
¡§Calm at Work¡¨ is a book which suggests many useful ways for keeping calm and reducing stress. It mentioned seven main causes of stress in workplace, including time, control, self, social, change, physical and lifestyle habits, and the author advised a series of solutions for each cause of stress. In order to help the readers to find the solutions in a more efficient way, author used a special method. At the end of each section, an ¡§index card¡¨ would be inserted, which contains information that guides the readers to find out the solutions. As some of the solutions are useful for different causes of stress, this book organized in such a way is concise and precise.
Breathing calm is very important. The author used a lot of effort in explaining how to breathe in a right way. It is because the calm breathing method is useful in many other calm keeping solutions. Besides, author suggests readers to write down their plans and prioritize their working schedules. Those methods are very practical for busy people; it can help them to complete their work on schedule. Other solutions like tools of subconscious and some simple exercises are all very useful and easy to carry out in our daily life.
There are some parts in this book which impressed me most. Those include the causes and solutions of time and social. For time, as we cannot control the time to pass, the things that we can control are the things we need to do and the time we need to do the things. Therefore, we must have a good time management. Besides, author suggested the readers to take off their watches, so as to make them more relax. It is because people will refer to their watches frequently, and it increases their pressure. If we can work without that pressure, we would be more relaxed. On the other hand, for social, author suggested the readers to develop a new relationship with those trouble colleagues. If those colleagues are helpful and constructive to our plan, we can build up good relationship with them, for those who will obstruct our plan, we have to avoid frequent contact with them. But in my opinion, in the real life workplace, we are not able to control who are my work partners, therefore, this method would be good, but not very practical.
In short, this book gives me lots of ideas to relax under stressful environment. Although, the author emphasize on the pressure from workplace, most of the solutions are helpful and practical for everyone. The book reminds me procrastination will increase the pressure level, so a well planning for myself is important. Moreover, the attitude of me is also critical. It is because building up a positive attitude would make me become optimistic and I understand that a happy person can live with less stress.
This book is good to everyone, if you are under great pressure, and seeking ways for relax, ¡§Calm at work¡¨ would be a book suitable for you.
Get Calm Today ~c:).......2000-02-09
I just wanted to write a quick review to let readers know that I recommend this book highly! At the end of 1999, I was working in a very stressful environment. Five people were working in a very small space manning an online retail store during holiday season! Yikes!
Withink two days of reading the book, I not only was able to cut my own stress down substantially, but some of the techniques I used (the positive contribution cup) changed the entire office environment for the better.
I cannot recommend this book enough, especially for people working in the highly stressful high tech field.
Read, enjoy and relax!

it's working!.......1999-12-28
You have to read this book after having read the book on meditation of the same author. The combination of these two books really makes you relaxed at work. The content is very practical and easy applicable in real life. I have read many books on the subject of handling emotions and the techniques the author mentions are familiar. However he is able to add something extra what makes the technicques easier to use. His words are well chosen and full of clear images. It's a very good book in my opinion.

Uplifting & Tender Stories.......2001-11-17
ALL IS CALM, ALL IS BRIGHT is a wonderful read! It is filled with moving and uplifting stories. Just right for a bedside book.
It is an attractive hardback. The writers offer narratives in a variety of styles, but most of them are like captivating stories told after dinner to friends on a December night. You will catch the Christmas spirit--and you will want to re-read many of the stories when the holidays are over.
All Is Calm, All Is Bright.......2001-11-12
This book is fantastic!! I would highly recommend it as a holiday gift. I found this book, as well as Ms. Kirking's book--Ripples of Joy, to be among my favorites. Both books offer peaceful reading and a chance to remember to appreciate life. Way to go, Ms. Kirking!! It is nice to have books that can be shared with family and friends!
Book Description
Information is being generated at an astonishing rate, thanks to a proliferation of increasingly sophisticated technology tools. People are more informed and more connected than ever before, but the price is stress and a pervasive sense of overload.
In such chapters as "The Connection Conundrum", "Launch the Search Engine Within", and "Your Digital Divide", the authors offer practical solutions for simplifying life, slowing down, and finding time for family, friends, and even a vacation. Through a process of self-analysis, self-insight, and priority setting, readers create individual solutions for achieving life balance.
Customer Reviews:
still relevant 5 years later.......2006-07-27
The book was written at the end of the dot com era, perhaps as a reaction against the intense high-tech stress undergone by many people. It is now 5 years later, but the text is still relevant. After all, while the dot com era is now clearly seen as overly inflated, the technology did not go away after the crash. In fact, it has continued to improve, and no doubt the stress levels are still present for many people.
So the book's advice about maintaining a balance between your professional and social lives is very germane. It is also worth keeping in mind, when, and not if, another cycle of high technology frenzy spins up.
Dot Calm: The Search for Sanity in a Wired World.......2001-09-07
It was great finding a book that offered helpful suggestions in a very readable style to the problem of staying in touch without getting overwelmed by our high-tech world. Best of all was the insightful nature of the book. The distinction between balance and congruence was so important. The authors recognized the reality of human spirituality and the blows it can suffer in our wired world. A fine book for anyone who has caught the wave of techno-communication but still wants to stay sane.
Dot Calm - The true meaning of life........2001-06-29
The frantic pace of our world is overwhelming. Technology is able to keep us connected 24/7 and many of us have allowed it to invade every minute of our lives. No wonder we experience personal systems overload! This book really delivers what is implied in its title Dot Calm. We are all seeking to balance our work, home, family, community....you name it. Dinnocenzo and Swegan have done their research and offer practical advice on how to discover and reconnect with what is important. We can choose a better way and this book guides us in that process. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to reclaim their life.
A Promise Delivered.......2001-06-18
I can not count the number of products and services that have come my way heralded with much hype and false promises of their value to the user. That's been especially true of self-help guides. You know the ones that promise you'll be a changed person, if only you buy the book and implement its recommendations. Well, at long last one of those books delivered on the promise. The foreword states that "you'll find these pages to be filled with practical, how-to advice .... step-by-step formulas for finding ...and keeping balance in your life." As a poster child for the insanity of the wired world, I really did not know how to break out of the strangle hold it had on my life. It became easier and easier to rationalize absolutely crazy behaviors related to my out- of- balance existence. The authors of Dot Calm were surely writing about me or so it seemed. I expect many of its readers will feel the same identification with the analysis of being over-connected, over-worked,over-scheduled, over-informed and ultimately OVERWHELMED. It's a book you'll read in one sitting and then reread many times as you take back control over your life. Thanks to the authors for delivering on their promise.
Dot.Calm brings some High Tech Calm.......2001-06-16
Just as Ms Dinnocenzo introduced me to sanity and organization trying to be a telecommter in a wired world in her 101 Tips for Telecommuters, I realized a missing piece. And I found it in Dot.Calm. She explained problems that I could not put into words. But the best part of the book was her and Rick's four specific solutions for dealing with technology when you must be able to communicate with others you don't see. She addresses the real human problems in this techno world. Now I feel like a survivor who can communicate successfully and make money doing so!

Sleepless in Portland.......2001-07-24
I tried every tip in this book but nothing worked. Nonetheless, it was a great book. It's funny and well written and the doctor has obviously thought a lot about this topic and done a lot of research. But, he never knew a kid like my kid. HE SAYS EVERYTHING AT TOP VOLUME! And mostly, it is screaming. However, I gave this book to my sister and it worked like a charm with her baby. Go figure!
A Must Baby Gift.......2000-03-14
This is a must have for all new parents. This is becoming one of my standard baby gifts, it will calm the parent resulting in a better life for the baby! Now we just need the next book for toddlers>
Most practical new parent book with a senseof humor........1999-09-01
This is perhaps the most comforting book for a new parent since Dr.Spock. Like De. Spock, the author is a well known pediatrician and as a father recognizes the problems a parent faces when the baby cries. The very practical suggestions would stand any parent in good stead but for the new parent it is essential. I believe this is one of the best gifts a friend can give to the new mother.
It would be better in hardback.......1999-01-05
A rollicking good read! I laughed, I cried, I ran the whole gamut of emotional experience. Unfortunately, my baby kept crying no matter what I did. And since the darn thing's a paperback, it wasn't even that effective in knocking the kid cold when he wouldn't shut up. Anyone who thinks this book is useful must either be a relative of the author or someone he owes money.
Practical, easy-to-understand, really works & fun to read!.......1998-12-06
Every once in a while a book comes along that provides really useful information that can be applied easily to make life easier for parents and children. Rarely is one of these books as enjoyable to read as this one. Written with true wit, and obvious expertise, the author captures -- in one place -- execllent advice grounded in both medical science as well as thousands of years of empirical results. I'm adding one of these books to every newborn gift for my friends and relatives. Thank you, Dr. Orenstein.

Customer Reviews:
Book was okay!.......2005-10-23
The book was okay, but I was side track my all the typos the author made. He/she could not spell words like analyze (which was spelled analyse), Hair loss (which was spelled hair loose), losing (which was spelled loosing, Estrogen (which was spelled ostrogen the entire book), non existent (which was spelled none existent), etc.... It was just so bizarre. You would think when publishing a book, you would at least hire a proof reader before finalizing.

Donna Has Done It Again!.......2002-05-21
Donna Schaper is a superb writer who makes life more interesting by her writing. She also writes with skill and depth! I have been reading her essays and illustrations for a long time in Lectionary Homiletics, LectionAid and Preaching Great Texts.
Her writing is chock full of good humor, wit and personal stories of her unique family..."Years ago, my husband dropped me, our two-year-old twins, our four-year-old son, and a pile of luggage at the airport's departure terminal." That is the opening sentence from the beginning of her second reflection in All Is Calm. Not many of her sentences are that long! But she intersperses colorful adjectives and adverbs along the way. Traveling Light in the Grand Canyon is one of her best stories.
Although I have not gotten to know her personally I am looking forward to her writing Conference at Kirkridge this summer.
I hope more Chaplains, Ministers and Pastors take advantage of her stimulating writing...Chaplain Fred W. Hood
