Mass Customization: The New Frontier in Business Competition
B. Joseph Pine Manufacturer: Harvard Business School Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0875849466 |
Book Description
MASS CUSTOMIZATION--the trailblazing book that showed companies how to mass-produce and individually customize their products and services--is now available in paperback. New ways of managing, together with new technology, make possible the seeming paradox of providing each customer with the "tailor-made" benefits of the pre-industrial craft system at the low costs of modern mass production. As author Joe Pine makes clear, businesses that learn to embrace mass customization are able to create greater variety and customization in their products and services at competitive prices, or better. This insightful book shows how it's done. Also available in hardcover; ISBN 0875843727, $35.00.Customer Reviews:

Essential Concept Related to Production.......2004-02-08
Joseph is prescient to identify an important trend on production since 1993. Although this book was written a decade ago, ¡§Mass Customization¡¨ still occupies a crucial position on maintaining an effective and efficient production line.
In this book, Joseph first introduced the main trend on production before 1970s, which was ¡§Mass Production¡¨. Then, he mentioned the change on production from ¡§Mass Production¡¨ to ¡§Mass Customization¡¨. He used a comprehensive comparison to locate the distinctive advantages of applying ¡§Mass Customization¡¨.
After persuading audience how imperative the change was. Joseph suggested three directions for companies to plan for their change: ¡§Move Incrementally¡¨, ¡§Transform the Business¡¨ and ¡§Create New Business¡¨. He also suggested five fundamental methods for companies to implement their change.
As the product life cycle becomes shorter and shorter, especially for technology related products, companies can¡¦t use only the ¡§Push¡¨ strategy to produce their product. However, they also can¡¦t produce their products only when receiving an order. It is because there is no enough time for them to do. As a result, ¡§Mass customization¡¨ helps companies to produce a critical mass for basic elements and then assemble the final product base on customer¡¦s requirement.
Moreover, Joseph used many tables and graphs to explain his idea, which help readers to understand the concept easily. Also, he provided many subtitles that help readers to concentrate on the main idea in the following paragraph.
Furthermore, it is interesting that Joseph also customized his book too. He grouped the chapters, which based on specific objective. By this action, he reinforced the main idea of ¡§Mass Customization¡¨ and facilitated readers to read this book.
In short, this book has a clear direction and systematic layout, which guide readers to understand the full picture of changing production trend.

Book Description
This book develops econometric techniques for the estimation of production, cost and profit frontiers, and for the estimation of the technical and economic efficiency with which producers approach these frontiers. Since these frontiers envelop rather than intersect the data, and since the authors continue to maintain the traditional econometric belief in the presence of external forces contributing to random statistical noise, the work is titled Stochastic Frontier Analysis. Frontiers of Sustainability: Environmentally Sound Agriculture, Forestry, Transportation, and Power Production
Roger Dower Manufacturer: Island Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 1559635460 |
Book Description
The United States is the world's biggest consumer of natural resources and its biggest polluter. With the U.S. economy expected to grow by 25% in the next decade alone, the costs to Americans-and to everyone else in the world-will increase substantially if we do not find a way to live and work sustainably.
Building on the recommendations of the President's Council for Sustainable Development, researchers at the World Resources Institute have developed a feasible and concrete plan for achieving sustainable development in the United States. Frontiers of Sustainability presents the first practical vision of a sustainable future for the United States and the steps needed to get there.
Authors examine the environmental performance and trends in four key economic sectors: agriculture, electricity generation, transportation, and pulp and paper manufacturing. They map out and explore the implications of potentially dangerous trends and developments, and detail methods for reducing or managing emergent threats. Each chapter sets forth a technologically feasible vision of the future in which the unwanted trends we see unfolding now are reversed.
Frontiers of Sustainability presents an adaptable formula for moving the United States toward a future that ensures generations to come a healthy stock of environmental and natural resource assets. The authors's realistic and workable plan focuses on what Americans really care about, connects with virtues that Americans already profess, and, unlike most discussions of sustainable development, emphasizes the "how" as much as the "why."

Well, It is better than the game manual..........2004-05-30
While the main map of Tunaria is just a larger version of the pos map the game manual gives you, a brand new player may find that the maps of each starting city is very useful along with the main quest info (for lvls 1-20). The information the book provide's on the quests may range from a good idea where to look or specifically sends you to a location which turns out to be completely wrong. It also contains info for the Epic Quests. However, each and every side quest has been totally abandoned.
Those players who are interested in leaning a tradeskill may find the tradeskill section to be somewhat helpful. It gives a listing of the crafting items (and some items that do not exist) and their properties when crafted into various equipment.
The faction section does tell you what faction is associated with which NPCs and it tells you how much faction you lose for killing a particular individual. What it does not do is tell you which MOBs to kill to raise faction.
The "Loot List" is the most absurd section of any strategy guide that I have EVER seen. You may search in vain for the item for over 15 minutes before you realize its not in there.
Items are not listed alphabetically. They are broken down into "Regions Found", "Item Rareity", "Location Equipped", then "Alphabetically". One should also be advised that just because an Item drops off of a MOB that was killed in the forest the item may be found in another category.
For the amount of time you will actually invest in the game spending $15-$20 for the strategy guide is not bad. Just remember you will not be able to rely on it nearly as heavily as in other games.
However, when comparing this book to one particular internet website (unable to name here) this book becomes useless drivel.
A Great Reference for General Information.......2004-01-05
Basic Game Information: Nothin new here. The book that comes with Frontiers has much the same information
Class Mastery: Useful for charting out how you want to spend your character's mastery points so that you don't have to back up at high levels.
Map: While not very big, the map does point out all major points of interest.
Quests: Here is where the book really shines. It covers all class quests to level 20, showing where to find everything and is specific enough to allow you to complete your quests with little difficulty (if you have the right group to kill the quest creatures). It also tells you what each quest gives you for a reward. Extremely useful, especially if you are not familiar with the zones.
Epic Quests: While not entirely complete, it will put you on the right path to starting your Epic Quest, and will keep you on the right track.
Trade Skills: Good general information on each skill and what you can make for each trade skill level.
Items: Good information on many of the items found around Frontiers.
Bestiary: Incomplete, but useful when looking for a specific creature.
There are other parts to the book, such as character abilities, that I won't cover here. Overall, I think the book is a great source of knowledge for the price (under $20).
I know that some won't like it because it doesn't include how to get to level 60 in 10 days or anything like that, but it is not meant to be a "cheat" book. In an online game that changes with every patch, such a "cheat" book would be obsolete within weeks. And yes, you can find most of the information presented within on the Internet for free. However, I prefer to have an on-hand resource for when I can't jump to a computer and look up some quest information, or check out some part of the map. That is why I give it 5 stars for what it is, a great addition to the Everquest experience.
An innacurate, poorly organzied waste of money and space!!.......2003-12-21
First, it devotes most of its hefty size to loot items, but it's organized so poorly you can't find any particular item unless you go through each page (not alphabetical, but by zone, then by location where you wear item, then alphabetically -- you cant find ANYTHING).
To make matters worse, you have a 50-50 chance that whatever you're looking for isn't in there to begin with, because the item listing is so incomplete.
Second, what information it does provide is frequently completely inaccurate. It contains many, many major errors in class-mastery requrements and quests.
Third, quest information is little more than what the game gives you when you get your quests -- barely an outline, no detail, and certainly no "strategy." This section is also not organized in a way you can quickly find what you're looking for when you're doing quests.
Fourth, its bestiary listing all the MOBs along the way, is as woefully incomplete as the item section, and it also lists MOBs by zone, so if you're seeking a particluar MOB, you spend a chunck of time going through each page of that section to find what you're looking for.
What this guilde does provide, fairly good crafting information, is certainly not worth the price of this book. I don't know which players they consulted when writing this book, but either they were idiots or they wanted to screw up people who play the game.
Although it's the only strategy guide out at the moment, Prima's Frontiers guide is NOT WORTH THE MONEY. It is, for the most part, absolutely useless and has the potential to do serious and irrevokable damage to your character as you play the game, especially in the area of class masteries. This is NOT a book any serious player should purchase, use, or trust.

North American Cattle-Ranching Frontiers: Origins, Diffusion, and Differentiation (Histories of the American Frontier)
Terry G. Jordan-Bychkov Manufacturer: Univ of New Mexico Pr ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 082631421X |
Book Description
This award-winning book offers an invaluable synthesis that is essential reading for anyone interested in the cattle-ranching traditions in North America. In this revisionist study, historical geographer Jordan reinterprets cattle ranching in the Old World and New, challenging the notion that western cattle culture derived principally from Texas. Jordan begins by looking at Old World stock-raising patterns of the British, Spanish, and North Africans and traces how these practices merged in the Caribbean and were brought into Mexico. He also shows how in the eighteenth and nineteenth century cattle-raising found its way to the Eastern Seaboard, the South and Midwest of the present United States, and into California.Customer Reviews:

Creating System Innovation How Large Scale Transitions Emerge
Hans de Bruijn Manufacturer: Taylor & Francis ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 9058096726 |
Book Description
'System innovation' is a radical change of institutions, structures and values concerning an entire sector or even more sectors. This study leads to conclusions about the possible role of governments when 'system innovation' is predominantly emergent. The popular idea of proactive governments in realizing system innovations is questioned by these conclusions. The recommendations emerging are, that highly process-oriented governments should focus on creating favourable conditions for system innovations instead of concentrating on content areas where these innovations might take place. Three examples of realized 'system innovations' are examined: · The privatisation of British Rail, · The explosive development of a biotech- industry around Boston (USA), and · The realization of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Program (South Florida, USA). Recurring topics in these case studies are the emergence of the system innovations, the role of knowledge, the way initiators deal with social resistance and the role of public- private interaction. The authors show that even seemingly well designed 'system innovations' contain many emergent elements and often lead to unforeseeable and unmanageable dynamics.
