This book is the culmination of a period of reassessment initiated by the challenge of Thatcherism, the collapse of the Soviet system, and the British Labour Party's embrace of market -driven politics, which has led Desai to his recognition of "the end of the road for democratic socialism."
In this provocative and enthusiastically revisionist book, Desai argues that capitalism's recent efflorescence is something Karl Marx anticipated and indeed would, in a certain sense, have welcomed. Capitalism, as Marx understood it, would only reach its limits when it was no longer capable of progress. Desai argues that globalization, in bringing the possibility of open competition on world markets to producers in the Third World, has proved that capitalism is still capable of moving forwards. Marx's Revenge opens with a consideration of the ideas of Adam Smith and Hegel. It proceeds to look at the nuances in the work of Marx himself, and concludes with a survey of more recent economists who studied capitalism and attempted to unravel its secrets, including Joseph Schumpeter, John Maynard Keynes and Friedrich Hayek.

Standing Marx on his head.......2005-05-31
A fun read that attempts to turn Marxian theory on its head to create a pro-capitalist Marx. The book is a good overview of the economic history of the last 200 some years and Marxian economic/poltical theory. My only criticism would be that, I believe he brushed aside Popper's criticisms of Hegel too nonchalantly.
An Admirable Effort--Yet Comes Up Short.......2003-03-05
Many Leftists, myself included, have spoken against the negative effects that globalization has had on the working classes in both the United States and the Third World. However, if Marx were alive today, what would his position be?
In "Marx's Revenge," Meghnad Desai proposes the startling thesis that Marx would support the current phenomenon of globalization. According to Desai, a truly socialist society can develop only when capitalism exhausts itself as a creative and progressive force. As recent events have shown, this has not yet happened. Capitalism is still a productive and vital force for better or worse.
Desai supports his thesis by discussing three variants of socialism that arose in the 20th Century: Socialism outside Capitalism (SoC), Socialism within Capitalism (SwC), and Socialism beyond Capitalism (SbC).
SoC represents the socialist society that was attempted within the Soviet Union. This version represents the Stalinist "socialism in one country" model which held that socialism and capitalism were destined to compete against each other. The system that was able to produce the most economic benefit to its citizens was to be declared the "winner." However, the corruption endemic in the Soviet system and its inability to produce the surplus capital necessary for economic growth and development led to the demise of this system with the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.
SwC represents the attempt by the developed capitalist nations to develop a "humanized" capitalism with a generous welfare state. This system largely worked from 1945 through the end of the 1960s. However, SwC was made possible only through the widespread Keynesian consensus held by the West after World War II that allowed contries to manipulate domestic financial markets for the funding of domestic programs. With the advent of globalization and the resulting liquidity of international capital, this project was dealt a severe blow beginning in the late 1970s.
SbC represents the only true alternative to capitalism. According to Desai, SbC represents a "self-conscious society" that develops when capitalism reaches its limit and can no longer act as a progressive force for the economic betterment of society. What will SbC look like?
This leads me to the central criticism of Desai's book. Desai offers an excellent historical overview of the development of the various competing forms of socialism as well as an intricate discussion of Marx's theories of profit and growth as put forth in Das Kapital. However, he has little to say regarding the pragmatic considerations involving what a true socialist society will look like. In fact, the last sentence in "Marx's Revenge" states: "Will there ever be Socialism beyond Capitalism?" (p. 315). This question remains unanswered.
To get an idea of what such a society would look like, I recommend reading David Schweickart's book "After Capitalism." Both books are important in that they offer hope that the current late, decadent stage of capitalism will be the final one and that a more just and humane order can be built in its place.

I used this for a training manual for my new hires as private investigators, it is hands down one of the best books ever written on interviewing and interrogation techniques. Even the experienced people were raving about the information in it. Can't ask for better than that!
Not just the best for cops, but for any of us..........2006-11-05
If you cannot afford the expensive course given by Reid, or your agency is too "thrifty" to spend the money to send you, this book will give you a thorough overview. The technique is explained very well in two sections- the first part provides a synopsis of interview and interrogation essentials in some detail. Distinctions between Inerviews and Interrogations; Obtaining facts; the Interview Room; Investigator Attitude; Starting Interviews; Formulating Questions; Behavioral Analysis of Truthful and Untruthful Subjects. The second part explains the nine-step technique Reid has developed and perfected over years of use by many agencies. Written for a general reader, the writing avoids legalese and is well illustrated. Highly recommended!
Useful Resource.......2005-09-24
As a school administrator, I find the information on interviewing and interrogation helpful in getting to the bottom of issues I previously have not been able to solve. The questioning techniques and the observation of behaviors presented in this book enable me to allow my students to tell the truth and help to solve their own issues. The resolution of these issues and the breaking down of lies and cover-up behavior is the first step to helping students make better decisions. This book is an invaluable resource in that regard.

This is a good book for anyone going into law enforcement. I had to buy it for class, but I will be keeping it because the book will be great for reference down the road!
Criminal Interrogation and Confessions: bias and distortion at work.......2005-09-13
Old material that has been rehashed a number of times, but it is necessary to read it in order to understand the bias that is inherent in contemporary investigations. It is clearly illustrated that there is no actual scientific approach, no consideration of alternative explanations, but instead there is only an attempt to obtain confessions. Inbau, Reid, and others have never included consideration of other, more scientifically supported discussions such as those by Gudjunsson and G. Wells. The writing in the book is not very good. It is overly simple in style, and the organization is also simple, but not informative. Read the book for history and for understanding, but not for factual, supported knowledge.

Decades after its first edition, this is still considered the best work on interrogating a criminal suspect. The authors walk you through every step, towards the goal of clearing the innocent and eliciting confessions from the guilty. No detail or nuance is left unexplored, not only of the suspect's behavior, but of your own as well. This book is a must read for anyone involved in criminal justice.

Comprehensive yet Disappointing.......2005-06-26
Professor Gudjonsson has obviously put a great deal of effort into researching this subject and writing this book. The book contains a comprehensive review of the studies of noted psychologists. Unfortunately the thrust of the book appears to be aimed at pointing out his displeasure with the techniques advocated by Reid and Associates. These techniques have been proven to be extremely effective in the US law enforcement arena. I was disappointed with my purchase after the repeated "Reid bashing". 3 stars for effort.

Each chapter of this book is well written and greatly informative. The book concentrates on false confessions, but there is an interesting chapter on entrapment. A must-read for forensic psychologists, defense attorneys, and police detectives who are dealing with confession evidence.

A roadmap to a critical process.......2004-01-12
For lay people and civilians, this is a great insight into one of police work's most critical functions. As a journalist and author, I recently found myself referring to Dr. MacDonald's book (and others on forensic matters) for a very complex tale of rape and murder. His grasp of police processes and rape issues, their underpinnings and their ultimate effects is eloquently stated and well organized in this text. His experience in forensic psychiatry, supplemented by his advisory work for the Denver Police Department and consultation status for the courts, is a valuable resource. I recommend this text as a good civilian reference.
