H-Infinity Optimal Control and Related Minimax Design Problems: A Dynamic Game Approach (Systems & Control: Foundations & Applications)
Tamer Basar , and Pierre Bernhard Manufacturer: Birkhäuser Boston ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0817638148 |
Book Description
One of the major concentrated activities of the past decade in control theory has been the development of the so-called 'H-infinity-optimal control theory', which addresses the issue of worst-case controller design for linear plants subject to unknown disturbances and plant uncertainties. This second edition features a more streamlined presentation of the results included in the first edition and also contains substantial new material, reflecting new developments in the field since 1991. Among these are the nonlinear theory; connections between H-infinity-optimal control and risk sensitive stochastic control problems; H-infinity filtering for linear and nonlinear systems; and robustness considerations in the presence of regular and singular perturbations. Also included are a rather detailed description of the relationship between frequency-and time-domain approaches to robust controller design, and a complete set of results on the existence of value and characterization of optimal policies in finite- and infinite-horizon LQ differential games.
The authors believe that the theory is now at a stage where it can easily be incorporated into a second-level graduate course in a control curriculum, that would follow a basic course in linear control theory covering LQ and LQG designs.

Optimization in Economics and Finance: Some Advances in Non-Linear, Dynamic, Multi-Criteria and Stochastic Models (Dynamic Modeling and Econometrics in Economics and Finance)
Bruce D. Craven , and Sardar M. N. Islam Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0387242791 |
Book Description
Many optimization questions arise in economics and finance; an important example of this is the society's choice of the optimum state of the economy (the social choice problem). Optimization in Economics and Finance extends and improves the usual optimization techniques, in a form that may be adopted for modeling social choice problems. Problems discussed include: when is an optimum reached; when is it unique; relaxation of the conventional convex (or concave) assumptions on an economic model; associated mathematical concepts such as invex and quasimax; multiobjective optimal control models; and related computational methods and programs. These techniques are applied to economic growth models (including small stochastic perturbations), finance and financial investment models (and the interaction between financial and production variables), modeling sustainability over long time horizons, boundary (transversality) conditions, and models with several conflicting objectives. Although the applications are general and illustrative, the models in this book provide examples of possible models for a society's social choice for an allocation that maximizes welfare and utilization of resources. As well as using existing computer programs for optimization of models, a new computer program, named SCOM, is presented in this book for computing social choice models by optimal control.

Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 3540405062 |
Book Description
This volume considers optimal stochastic decision processes from the viewpoint of stochastic programming. It focuses on theoretical properties and on approximate or numerical solution techniques for time-dependent optimization problems with random parameters (multistage stochastic programs, optimal stochastic decision processes). Dynamic-Programming Approaches to Single- and Multi-Stage Stochastic Knapsack Problems for Portfolio Optimization
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 1423553675 |
Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A500263. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis proposes new methods, based on dynamic programming, for solving certain single-stage and multi-stage integer stochastic knapsack problems. These problems model stochastic portfolio optimization problems (SPOPs) which assume deterministic unit weight, and normally distributed unit return with known mean and variance for each item type. Given an initial wealth, the objective is to select a portfolio that maximizes the probability of achieving or exceeding a specified final return threshold; the multi-stage problem allows revisions of the portfolio at regular time intervals. An exact method is developed to solve a single-stage SPOP with independence of returns among item types. For a problem from the literature with 11 item types, this method obtains an optimal solution in a fraction of a second on a laptop computer. An approximation method, based on discretization of possible wealth values, is developed to solve a multi-stage SPOP with inter- and intra-stage independence of returns among item types. Running on a desktop computer, this approximation method solves a 3-stage problem with 6 item types in under 12 minutes. With finer discretization in a 3-stage problem with 8 item types, the solution time is about 46 minutes.

LQ Dynamic Optimization and Differential Games
Jacob Engwerda Manufacturer: Wiley ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0470015241 |
Book Description
Game theory is the theory of social situations, and the majority of research into the topic focuses on how groups of people interact by developing formulas and algorithms to identify optimal strategies and to predict the outcome of interactions. Only fifty years old, it has already revolutionized economics and finance, and is spreading rapidly to a wide variety of fields.LQ Dynamic Optimization and Differential Games is an assessment of the state of the art in its field and the first modern book on linear-quadratic game theory, one of the most commonly used tools for modelling and analysing strategic decision making problems in economics and management. Linear quadratic dynamic models have a long tradition in economics, operations research and control engineering; and the author begins by describing the one-decision maker LQ dynamic optimization problem before introducing LQ differential games.
LQ Dynamic Optimization and Differential Games offers a comprehensive introduction to the theory and practice of this extensively used class of economic models, and will appeal to applied mathematicians and econometricians as well as researchers and senior undergraduate/graduate students in economics, mathematics, engineering and management science.

Introduction to Forensic Science and Criminalistics
Robert E Gaensslen , Howard Harris , and Henry C Lee Manufacturer: McGraw-Hill Humanities/Social Sciences/Languages ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0072988487 |
Book Description
Written by authors with close to one hundred years of forensic experience combined, this introductory text features comprehensive coverage of the types of forensic work done by crime laboratories for criminal cases and by private examiners for civil cases. The book’s unifying vision of the role of forensic science in the justice system and of the role of the professional forensic scientist is clearly introduced in the first two chapters and reinforced throughout the text. Each chapter discusses a key case in the field and references other "real world" applications of the techniques described. The text’s premise is that being a scientist is not required for understanding and using forensic science, but that a greater understanding of science lends itself to better use of the techniques of forensic science.
