      Book Description

By retaining a strong focus on policy and real-world issues, Environmental Economics and Management: Theory, Policy and Applications, provides an applied, practical approach to environmental economic theory accessible to students with minimal or more advanced economic exposure. The text has a modular structure, which not only organizes the presentation, but also provides a format that allows instructors flexibility and preference in designing material for the course. The presentation does not compromise economic theoretical concepts, but it does complement economic theory with timely, real-world applications. This text is intended to give undergraduate and MBA students a clear perspective of the relationship between market activity and the environment. The text integrates the business perspective in the development of environmental decision-making - a vantage point often overlooked in more conventional treatments. The general approach uses economic analytical tools such as market models, benefit-cost analysis, and risk analysis to assess environmental problems and to evaluate policy solutions.

        Book Description

It is common to assert that utility investors are compensated in the allowed rate of return for the risk of large disallowances, such as arise for investments found imprudent or not `used and useful'. However, this book develops a new theory of asymmetric regulatory risk that shows that infallible estimates of the cost of capital are sure to provide downward-biased estimates of the necessary allowed rates of return in the presence of such regulatory risks. The book uses the new theory of regulatory risk to understand recent developments in the risk of natural gas pipelines and other regulated industries.

                      Book Description

`This book presents the best evidence yet that ecological economists in the United States are becoming a strong and unified voice on biodiversity loss, climate change, and energy options. The arguments presented here are rich, sound, convincing, timely, and are not about to lose their saliency any time soon.'
                      - Richard B. Norgaard, University of California, Berkeley, US

`Erickson and Gowdy have put together a wonderful collection of contributions from a wide range of scholars that will greatly advance ecological economics.'
                      - Herman E. Daly, University of Maryland, College Park, US

Research on the cutting-edge of economics, ecology, and ethics is presented in this timely study. Building from a theoretical critique of the tradition of cost-benefit analysis, the contributors lay the foundation for a macroeconomics of environmental sustainability and distributive justice. Attention is then turned to three of the most critical areas of social and environmental applied research - biodiversity, climate change, and energy.

The contributors redefine progress away from growth and toward development. To this end, the first section of the book tackles the dominant framework used in the US today to evaluate tradeoffs between economic growth and its inherent externalities. Succeeding chapters cover a wide variety of studies related to biodiversity health and energy. Each section is anchored with overviews by top scholars in these areas - including Herman Daly, Carl McDaniel, Stephen Schneider, and Nathan Hagens - and followed by detailed analyses reflecting the transdisciplinary approach of ecological economics.

Students and scholars of ecological, environmental, and natural resource economics, sustainability sciences, and environmental studies will find this book of great interest. Non-profit and government agencies in search of methods and cases that merge the study of ecology and economics will also find the analyses of great practical value.

                        Book Description

It is increasingly important for companies and organizations to produce, share and use knowledge on a national and global scale. However, little is known on how sectors and organizations could use knowledge more efficiently and how to benchmark organizations as learning organizations. This book is an ambitious attempt to address these issues through a better understanding of knowledge and learning processes at a sectorial level. It analyzes and compares the processes of knowledge production, dissemination and use in the engineering, information and communication technology, health, and education sectors.

                            Book Description

In all OECD countries, educational policymakers face two new challenges: the growing importance of lifelong learning and the rapid development of new technologies. This publication contains fifteen papers which examine the seriousness of these challenges, the extent to which new technologies are already changing post-school learning, how technologies might extend or limit access to learning, and what considerations policy makers must take into account. It reviews current work and describes interesting examples of practice. The papers were presented at a conference organized in cooperation with the U.S. National Center on Adult Literacy that was held in Philadelphia in February 1996.

                              Book Description

In todayÆs turbulent business environment, the conventional bases of competitive strategy are increasingly being eroded. In such an environment, the ability to generate and acquire new knowledge is becoming an essential prerequisite for success. This emerging paradigm of business treats knowledge and learning as the singular basis not only for competitive success, but also for corporate survival. Most books on the subject adopt either one of two mutually exclusive approachesùthe first places emphasis on learning as an activity internal to the organization, while the second views learning as a resource to be leveraged by the organization. In Competing Through Knowledge, the first to emanate from India on the subject, Dr. Madhukar Shukla integrates both these approaches and focuses not only on how organizations learn, but also on how they can (and do) use knowledge and learning as strategic weapons to transform their operating paradigms. Beginning with a discussion on the radical changes taking place in the Indian business environment and the need for Indian organizations to develop learning capabilities, the first part of the book provides a framework to understand the dynamics of knowledge-based competition. The second part details six case studies of organizations that have encouraged learning and have utilized knowledge as a competitive asset. Generalizing from these cases, which also serve as benchmarks, the third and last part discusses the architecture of a learning organization and the qualitative shift required in the organization paradigm. Illustrating the ideas and concepts with real-life examples and case studies, including several from India, this book demonstrates the applicability of the new paradigm of the learning organization in the changing Indian business environment. This extremely readable book will appeal to CEOs, practicing managers, human resource professionals, and management consultants. It will also serve as supplementary reading for courses on the learning organization, strategic management, and organizational change.

4 out of 5 stars An Essential Guide to Managing Learning Times.......2000-04-03

Dr. Madhukar Shukla has been referred to as the "indian guru of the learning organisation" and in this book he shows why. Drawing on the theories of giants, he builds up a case for managing in the times when the capital (the K in economics) is Knowledge and vastly different from the traditional capital. As an entity knowledge is tacit and proprietary and as it becomes more explicit it becomes freely available. It is Dr. Shukla's contention that like truth, "knowledge will out" and it makes no sense for organizations to try to put locks on its mobility. Why like truth?...knowledge is truth!

With the examples of case studies of organisations like ABB, British Airways, GE, Citicorp and Xerox , Dr. Shukla shows us how successful corporations around the world are recognising this fact and are trying innovative ways to leverage this capital for competitive advantage...to turnaround themselves, to transform and to innovate.

What makes this book doubly enjoyable, is that it steers as clear of dobbledegook management jargon as much as possible..and when the author has to resort to jargon, they are suitably explained in lay terms. Coupled with examples strewn throughout the book, the often esoteric theories start to make startling sense and sock you between the eye. This book is a must read to all professionals and management people of all hues!

                                        Book Description

'Lifelong learning' is moving from buzzword to reality for ever more workers. Firms increasingly need their workers to be active, self-directed learners who contribute to innovations and improvements of processes, products and services. Companies that explicitly encourage and support worker learning, from a strategic perspective, are called 'learning organizations'.
This book is the result of a European study into the changing views and practices of professionals in the field of Human Resource Development within such organizations.
Focusing on Europe, the book contains authors and research from Finland, the UK, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, France and Italy. Theoretical explorations of the learning organization and the changing face of HRD complement nearly thirty case studies of HRD functions.
This book will be essential reading for both academics and professionals in the fields of HRD and lifelong learning.
