Who says the left wing doesn't have a sense of humor? Maybe it doesn't, but documentarian Michael Moore sure does--Exhibit A was Roger & Me; B was the ill-fated TV Nation; and C is 1997's print skirmish Downsize This! Moore's politics are rabidly liberal, populist, and anti-big business--about what you'd expect from the former editor of Mother Jones. While this restricts his audience to Americans on the left side of the aisle, for them Downsize This! will be a chance to point and laugh hysterically (if ruefully) at the clique of rich white guys who run everything.
Moore is at his best as a prankster, whether it's trying to see if Pat Buchanan will take a campaign donation from the John Wayne Gacy Fan Club (yes) or whether he can have Bob Dornan committed to an insane asylum based on his bizarre behavior (no, but it was close). Moore is one of our sharpest satirists, and Downsize This! makes one wish he would write a "Sorry State of the Union" every year. But only if it doesn't cut into his moviemaking--that's too big a price to pay. --Michael Gerber
Book Description
Americans today are working harder, working longer and yet for most of us, in this time of ruthless downsizing and political cronyism, job security, a decent standard of living and a comfortable retirement are becoming harder and harder to find. In this brilliantly funny and right-on-target diatribe, irreverent everyman Michael Moore gives his own bold views on who's behind the fading of the American dream.
Whether issuing Corporate Crook trading cards, organizing a Rodney King Commemorative Riot, sending a donation to Pat Buchanan from the John Wayne Gacy fan club (which was accepted) or trying to commit former right-wing congressman Bob Dornan to a mental hospital, the in-your-face host of TV Nation and director/star of Roger & Me combines an expansive wit with biting social commentary to make you think and laugh at the same time.
In hardcover, Downsize This! stormed the bestseller lists of the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, San Francisco Chronicle and others. Given Michael Moore's enormous -- and growing -- constituency, this trade paperback edition brings his unique perspective on the nation to an even greater audience.

Love it.......2007-05-09
I just love Michael Moore. Have a few books by him. He is frank, to the point and raises questions. He makes you sit and think and ask questions yourself.
Entertaining broad propaganda.......2007-02-14
[Crown Hardcover] Lacking the wit of left-of-center pundits like Al Franken or Bill Mahr, Michael Moore tries harder - sometimes trying *too hard* such as tossing in barbs at the inconsistencies of Saturday Night Live - and does make compelling points about the phenomenon of CEO ascendancy and workforce oblivion; Bob Dornan, G. Gordon Liddy, Steve Forbes far-right/far-out observations and recommendations, etc., but just like his offensively titled movie "Farenheit 911"...it needs more meat on the bone. And less facetiousness - okay, most of these CEOs are "non-ethnic" folks but by including the color of their eyes in a long litany of names and reputations is stretching the point. (In addition, in all fairness - look that word up, Mike - it's quite possible that many [GM?] workers had to be let go because product quality and customer service went down, profits or no profits...sometimes I like to reflect on my '82 Skyhawk experience and a few "hot-line" exchanges with people who acted somewhat...indifferent). The suggestion that downsizing is the order of the day for single-minded greedy guys is a little too simple.
An interesting chapter is on President Clinton, who MM sees as a leader who got off to a running start, then ran in all directions, sometimes well into "enemy"/right-wing territory. Whatever motivated him, his conservative view on Welfare and Economic Reform showed that the "complicated" millenium man President made some bold and intelligent *adjustments*. Moore finds this perplexing.
Moore does have a message, however, and he gets us to ask questions. This book might not get you to rethink your views but it will cause you to see things in a different light. That can be fun reading.
Back When Moore Had a Real Issue.............2006-06-17
This is from an era where Micheal Moore actually made valid points. I'm a Republican, but I'm also a Christian. That means I believe that people are supposed to give a darn about something besides just money. Greed and heartlessness in the corporate world are very real... though I'm a capitalist, this greed thing is something that I struggle with. There are folks who lose their jobs for no reason at all, hard working people with nowhere to go.
It's not right.
But when the government gets involved, I can't say things are made any better.
Nonetheless, Moore makes some valid points in this book, which is from an era when he was more than an anti-gun, anti-war loony.
If you work hard and the company prospers, you lose your job.......2006-05-17
Of course, this book is partly out-of-date. It covers mainly the Clinton years. But the issues it tackles are still very actual.
- the unemployment issue: Manpower is still the number one US employer and corporate downsizing continues unabatingly
- the salary issue: worker's salaries are still less today in real dollar terms than in 1979
- the CEO salary issue: a CEO earns 212 times more than an average worker
- the healthcare issue: more than 40 million US citizens cannot afford healthcare insurance
- the voting issue: why is only a small part of the US population voting?
- the abortion issue: 'outlawing abortion would mean a return to the good old dirty, unsafe days of illegal abortion'
- the corporate representation issue: few blacks or workers
- the race and affirmative action issue: still necessary
- the immigration issue: all US citizens are descendants of immigrants
- the corporate fraud issue: Enron and Co
- the welfare v. Aid to Dependent Corporations issue
and most amazing of all, 'the balanced budget issue', proposed by the Reps. But once in office, the Reps digged enormous holes in the budget by offering heavy tax cuts to the super-wealthy!
However, Michael Moore committed also a colossal blunder: 'Democrat? Republican? Can you tell the Difference?'
That Michael Moore's voice is terribly feared by the wealthy, the powerful, the conservatives and the religious right, is mercilessly exposed in the excellent movie 'This divided State' by Steven Greenstreet.
We need his vitriolic voice.
Michael Moore Throws a Tantrum.......2006-05-02
I've seen Michael Moore on TV, humorously trying to get an appointment Roger Smith (then General Motors chairman). The book "Downsize This!" has the moral high ground concerning the looting of corporations by CEOs, accompanied by plant closings. However, I rapidly lost interest because author Moore strayed from this subject. After thirty-seven pages of wandering. I concluded that he'd forgotten about it.
Moore is right about some other things. The American dream has gone up in smoke, and the political parties are alike.
However, Moore quickly resorts to mindlessly repeating the entire litany of liberal thought, spiced up with insults to anyone who doesn't agree with him. We are asked to believe that Joe Citizen is a militia target. Oklahoma City is redneck. Pat Buchanan doesn't agree with Moore, so Buchanan is motivated by hate and fear. Moore uses generalizations and stereotypes. He attacks the opposition's motives rather than their facts and logic.
Moore's grandparents were immigrants and anti-immigration talk makes him feel bad. People who are against immigration, are "a_ holes." Moore tells us that immigrants aren't a drain on welfare, they don't commit crime, they only take jobs that other people won't do. Moore says that if my surname was not on the Mayflower passenger list, then I have to "shut the f_ _k up" about curtailing immigration.
No facts, no figures, no research, no logic, no quotes, just bare opinion. Page 37, I'm out of here. Plunk, wastebasket.
There were some good parts in. Moore's movie "Canadian Bacon." I think he should stick to screenplay.

Michael Moore....My Hero.......2002-08-05
In his first attempt at publishing, Michael Moore presents us with his amazingly informative and hilarious political satire! This book provides us with some very startling information that everyone should know in order to be active participants in our democratic society. From his ultra-sarcastic beginning chapter "The Etiquette of Downsizing," to "A Sperm's Right to Life," to "So You Want to Kill the President?" this is a perfect book for anyone. From those who desire to be more informed citizens to the vetran activist...its a sure bet! Funny...informative...PERFECT! After you read this book make sure to check out his movies "The Big One" (my personal favorite), "Roger and Me," and "TV Nation volumes 1 & 2." And of course, you will NEED to read his latest and greatest "Stupid White Men...and Other Sorry Excuses For the State of the Nation!"
A REAL AMERICAN HERO.......2000-01-09
MICHAEL MOORE DID A SPECTACULAR JOB ON THE BOOK. IT WAS TRUTHFUL AND INSIGHTFUL. THIS SHOULD BE REQUIRED READING FOR ALL WORKING CLASS PEOPLE. THE BOOK WAS AS GOOD AS HIS MOVIES: ROGER AND ME, THE BIG ONE, AND CANADIAN BACON. HIS THOUGHTS ON NAFTA SHOWS HOW THAT BIG BUISNESS RUNS OUR GOVERMENT. MICHAEL MOORE IS A WORKING CLASS HERO. WHICH THERE ARE VERY FEW OF. THANK YOU MICHAEL MOORE FOR WAKING UP PEOPLE TO THE REALITY OF THE SITUATION.
Moore tackles corporate downsizing with the fury of a genius.......1999-09-23
Moore unrelentlessly attacks the bussiness and moral ethics of today's society with this well thought out literary success. The much ignored unemployed citizens of this "great" country now have a powerful voice of humor and reason on their side: Michael Moore. All should read this.
A Tragic comedy about America today.......1999-09-10
This may be the most timely book I've ever read, written by a man who is clearly in touch with reality. This book is written for all of us who have downsized and outplaced. This treasure should be required reading for every political candidate and college student. God help us to recognize this wisdom before it's too late. Arthur Hrin

It's an unlikely beginning to what became a momentous, history-changing history fair project. Eleven-year-old Hunter Scott was watching Jaws one day when he first heard about the World War II sinking of the USS Indianapolis. Intrigued, he investigated further, and discovered a shocking, heartbreaking story behind what should have been a tale of heroism and patriotism. Torpedoed by a Japanese submarine, the Indianapolis went down in minutes, taking more than 800 sailors with it. Several hundred survived, but only after spending days in the open sea with sharks diminishing their numbers hourly. This is only the beginning of the tragedy, however. In an effort to make an example of the ship's captain, and in order to deflect blame from itself, the U.S. Navy unfairly court-martialed the captain, painfully changing the lives of all the men involved.
Basing much of his text on young Hunter Scott's research, author Pete Nelson does a fine job of presenting this story through the eyes of many of the survivors. Old and new photos allow readers to know many of the men of the ship, and personal accounts reveal the horrors of those days in the ocean--and later in the courtroom. A bittersweet ending will leave the reader pensive and deeply moved. (Ages 12 and older) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
Just after midnight on July 30, 1945, the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine. The ship sank in 14 minutes. More than 1,000 men were thrown into shark-infested waters. Those who survived the fiery sinking—some injured, many without life jackets—struggled to stay afloat in shark-infested waters as they waited for rescue. But the United States Navy did not even know they were missing. The Navy needed a scapegoat for this disaster. So it court-martialed the captain for “hazarding” his ship. The survivors of the Indianapolis knew that their captain was not to blame. For 50 years they worked to clear his name, even after his untimely death. But the navy would not budge—until an 11-year-old boy named Hunter Scott entered the picture. His history fair project on the Indianapolis soon became a crusade to restore the captain’s good name and the honor of the men who served under him.

Hunter Scott, an 11-year-old boy in Pensacola, Florida, was watching the movie Jaws, listening to Captain Quint tell the story of the sinking of the USS Indianapolis at the end of World War II. "Eleven hundred men went into the water. Very first light, the sharks come cruising. . . ." Hunter had a simple question: Was this a true story?
The story of the USS Indianapolis, the worst naval disaster in American history, is indeed true. So is the story of the shameful court-martial of the ship's captain, shameful because the loss of the ship was not his fault, and the Navy knew it. Hunter Scott became the catalyst for the survivors' efforts to clear their captain's name and set the record straight. This is the story of the ship, her brave sailors, their wronged captain, and a young man's crusade to right an old injustice.

Excellent book!!.......2007-03-13
If you want to give your students an inspiration to do more for others than for themselves, give them this book. Scott Hunter's work was important and I appreciate this author's choice to write the book for the left for dead navy soldiers.
Left For Dead was a fantasic read.......2007-03-08
This book was great. I absolutely loved it. I didn't give it full marks because the beginning was very slow. The excitement didn't come until the ship sank. After that it was great. I would recommend this book to everyone.
This book takes place mainly in the Pacific Ocean. The time is from 1945 to 2001. It ranges from the ship sinking to Hunter trying to fix the captain's name. There are two story lines in the book. (One is Hunter and the other is the crew) There were a lot of important events. Of course one of the most important was the sinking. Also when the captain was court-martialed it was huge.
There were a lot of conflicts in the book. Many of them happened in the water. For instance many men thought they saw a fantasy island. They would want to take a group of people and swim to it. The problem was that the others didn't see it, so they didn't want to leave the group. Sometimes physical fights would break out over weather or not to go. Eventually to solve the issue one guy would just swim out and see. (Of course they wouldn't find the island) some of them were attacked by sharks, while swimming away, and died.
Over all this book was great!!!
Interesting Read. Enjoyable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1.......2006-05-31
From start to finish I enjoyed much of this novel. THere were times when i didn't understand all of the fancy language of the navy and ships, but it was a great read.
THis novel is based on the story of the U.S.S. Indianapolis. THis ship sinks during the world war and everyone points their fingers at the captain. But a young boy chooses to aid this man who has been accused of this nonsense.
This book is very interesting and every page had more detail and suspense that made it a great read. Usually I can't sit through
an entire book but i got through this one. I reccomend it toaanyone interested in suspense and tension. THis book is for you.

"A Simple Review of Injustice"
The novel, Left For Dead by Pete Nelson and Hunter Scott, is quite an interesting piece of work. The book is about the story of the USS Indianapolis disaster, possibly the worst the Navy has ever seen. The story is centered around the injustice that was directed towards the ship's captain. Captain McVay was court marshaled because of his so-called inability to get out of the situation the USS Indianapolis faced. Hunter Scott, a boy who saw the movie, Jaws, became skeptical. He went on a journey to prove that Captain McVay was innocent. Does Scott prove that McVay is in fact innocent? Or does his efforts fail him? Read this novel and the ending will astonish even the worst skeptics.
Quotes in Left for Dead show the reader that this book is worth reading. First, in the Preface, Hunter Scott says, "I am trying to honor a group of veterans to whom honor is everything." Hunter says here that he is going to great heights as well as disadvantages to fight for Captain McVay. Hunter has a mission and nothing is going to stop him from doing what he thinks is right. He is trying to make up for all the sacrifices those men faced in order for our freedom to be in stone forever. Suspense is prominent in this novel. Here, before chapter seven, a quote from Herman Melville, a man from Moby Dick, is stated. It reads, "Any man unaccustomed to such sights, to have looked over her side that night, would have almost thought the whole round sea was one huge cheese, and those sharks the maggots in it." Here, foreshadowing of the accident is given. This is important because it gives a sense of suspense to the reader. The horrific disaster is shown in a nutshell from this little quote. Toward the end of Left For Dead, Pete Nelson writes, "Three hundred and seventeen survived the sinking of the Indianapolis, which meant that there were 317 different stories to be told afterward." Pete Nelson is saying here that this story is a classic. All of the survivors would not have stories to tell if it was not an experience of a lifetime. Just another reason to read Left for Dead.
Left For Dead has its ups and downs. I really enjoyed the history behind the USS Indianapolis. I learned many new things from this novel and there is plenty of knowledge to share! Also, I love how Pete Nelson implemented a story theme to the novel. It was not just a documentary; it was a story that included documentary material. However, there were some downsides to this novel. I did not like the fact that it jumped around from story to information often. It would have been better if the novel would have one way or another; either all storyline or either all documentary. As you can see, Left For Dead is a great novel and I would recommend it to anyone if they are interested in history regarding the Navy or even American history.
I couldn't put the book down.......2006-03-15
This book was recommended to me by a friend as a must read. After buying the book from Amazon, I couldn't put it down. The stories of the men who were left at sea and the struggle by the young man so many years later to restore the honor of the caption falsely accused is well written in this short book and should be on everyone's must read list.
Book Description
A respected biographer teams up with an acclaimed artist to tell the story of the mail carrier who orchestrated the Great Savannah Boycott — and was instrumental in bringing equality to his community.
"Grow up and be somebody," Westley Wallace Law's grandmother encouraged him as a young boy living in poverty in segregated Savannah, Georgia. Determined to make a difference in his community, W.W. Law assisted blacks in registering to vote, joined the NAACP and trained protestors in the use of nonviolent civil disobedience, and, in 1961, led the Great Savannah Boycott. In that famous protest, blacks refused to shop in downtown Savannah. When city leaders finally agreed to declare all of its citizens equal, Savannah became the first city in the south to end racial discrimination.
A lifelong mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, W.W. Law saw fostering communication between blacks and whites as a fundamental part of his job. As this affecting, strikingly illustrated biography makes clear, this "unsung hero" delivered far more than the mail to the citizens of the city he loved.

Book Description
Lydia Maria Child presents the life of the dynamic nineteenth-century writer who, through her pen and at great personal cost to her literary career, spoke out for those silenced in society -- slaves, Native Americans, women, and the poor. At the dawn of the 1830s, Lydia Maria Child was a celebrated author, known for her popular domestic handbook, The Frugal Housewife, and Hobomok, a novel of American Indian life. In 1833, with the publication of her controversial Appeal in Favor of that Class of Americans Called Africans, Child's life changed dramatically from literary figure to antislavery activist. Her AppealR helped ignite the abolitionist movement, and several antislavery leaders -- including Wendell Phillips and Charles Sumner -- credited it with converting them to the cause. An inspirational look at an extraordinary woman, Lydia Maria Child is the story of how one person fought for the basic human right of freedom -- for all.

Off the Books: The Underground Economy of the Urban Poor
ASIN: 0804754748
Release Date: 2006-12-13 |
Book Description
This book addresses the impact of globalization on the lives of youth, focusing on the role of legal institutions and discourses. As practices and ideas travel the globe—such as the promotion and transmission of zero tolerance and retributive justice programs, the near ubiquitous acceptance of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and the transnational migration of street gangs—the legal arena is being transformed.
The essays in this book offer case studies and in-depth analyses, spanning diverse settings including courts and prisons, inner-city streets, international human rights initiatives, newspaper offices, local youth organizations, and the United Nations. Drawing on everyday social practices, each chapter adds clarity to our current understanding of the ways in which ideas and practices in different parts of the world can affect youth in one particular locale.

Here's a story everyone needs to know about.......2002-04-01
I am so glad this book was written. This is an important part of American history that all of us should know. Esther Morris went west and became part of the movement in Wyoming Territory to win women the right to vote and hold office. Then, to help solidify their position, she applied for and became a Justice of the Peace. She held this position until the next election. The book is more about the suffrage movement and its early beginnings in the American West than it is about Esther Morris' life. But, it's information I didn't know and now, would like to know more about. This will be a good book to read to students and a good lead-in to research more about this interesting topic. I like the illlustrations which enhanced the story.
Book Description
The period of Reconstruction that followed the end of the Civil War was a time of both tremendous promise and the deep conflict of ideas. At stake was the question of what the racial future of America would be. In the years between 1880 and 1900, the wonderful promise of a future of freedom that was made to black people by emancipation was broken. It was a promise that African Americans could conduct their daily lives with the assurance that their rights would be protected--the assurance of wide-awake and diligent social justice. Instead, justice slept. African Americans did, however, make their own brand of liberty through their activism and their faith. When John Solomon Lewis's family claimed their own land in Kansas, or Bishop Henry McNeal Turner encouraged African Americans to take pride in Africa, the flame of freedom was maintained. When Richard L. Davis organized mineworkers, or black women in New Orleans marched in the streets in support of striking dockworkers, they kindled the light of freedom that illuminated their path. When Booker T. Washington arrived in Tuskegee, Alabama, and started a school in Johanna Bowen Rudgrey's church, that light was further kindled. The message that African-American activists of the 1880s and 1890s left for those in the 20th century was a clear one. Frances Harper said it at the Chicago Women's Congress in 1893: "Demand justice, simple justice, as the right of every race." In Though Justice Sleeps, Barbara Bair demonstrates that black people were more than victims of Jim Crow laws and racial violence. She shows that they organized, fought back, moved around, thought, wrote, and created works of art. They connected their struggles with the rest of the world, turning to Africa, Europe, and the Caribbean for guidance and inspiration.
