4 out of 5 stars A Help in Team Building.......2001-01-11

G. Parker knows all about developing workplace team work. Not only is he a team work consultant, he is very familar with the literature and research on team work. As most of us know, many consultants do not bother to read the literature on the topic they profess to be an expert on. Cross Functional Teams is informative and constructive, largely because of Parker's knowledge of the field. Parker's concept of Cross Functional Teasm, or teams link people from different parts of an organization, distinquishes the book from the other books on team work.

            5 out of 5 stars A Winner!.......2005-01-19

For a self-employed writer with a major case of disorganization this book is a godsend. From the opening advice in "How to read this Book" to the final chapter "Application Strategies", this book is packed with information and useful hints. From giving me permission to start the book at any chapter that appeals to me, to the 'right-on' advice about procrastination, to the values identification exercise, 'Managing Workplace Chaos' has made my workday more productive and less stressful. And the added bonus is that the advice in this book has helped me in my life outside of work. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of money.......2004-05-02

For the benefit of those who already can read with speed, comprehension, and recall, about a third of this book is redundant for you.
If you can set goals and develop to-do lists, another third is redundant.
And the rest of the book is devoted to stress reduction. This is a problem for me, but there's nothing here I haven't seen in many other places. So for me, this book was a disappointment.
I was looking for something more related to the business world, more practical and applied.
To me, this was a re-hash of things I've already seen in many other books and articles, and so general that it wasn't worth reading through again.
However, if you haven't started exploring this subject, this book might be helpful.
I guess I'm looking for something more specific, along the lines of "Organize your Office" by Ronni Eisenberg, which has lots of specific tips like creating a checklist for frequently repeated tasks, getting in to the office early in the morning so that you can get a start and get something done before it gets hectic.

4 out of 5 stars Good suggestions for overhauling one's work & life goals.......2002-08-10

Chapter Four of this book gives particularly meaningful ways to create positive change in one's outlook and attitude towards one's work life. This chapter has helped me step back and see the larger issues which truly affect the day to day detail of the workplace. One reading of this book is not enough as each chapter is packed with so many ideas and detailed suggestions for improving one workplace environment. I need to reread this book several times to take it all in. I plan to keep this book handy as a reference and motivator to put as many of the suggestions into practice as possible. Improving the quality of one's work-life and consequently home-life is a goal that I believe this book can help with.

This book was worth so much more than money. It has taken pressure off of everyone in our office, not to mention our family members. The techniques for speed reading were worth there weight in gold, considering the ever increasing need to read faster with the flood of information we get everyday. I am personally grateful that I bought this book. I have decreased my stress level ten-fold. Thank you Patricia! for your dedication to writing such a fantastic book!

"The book does well in several respects: First, it presents a broad but integrated view of the workplace as a source of stress. Second, it is thorough treatment of the topic of job stress and is well-referenced. Finally, it contains a clear description of the importance of organizational culture/climate as influencing perceived stress, a topic missing in many books." --Lawrence Murphy, Senior Research Psychologist, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Stress in the workplace is on the rise, resulting in higher rates of absenteeism, reduced productivity, and increased health compensation claims. Managing Workplace Stress examines the cause of this increase in work-related stress, with a particular emphasis on stress created by organizational changes including redesigning of jobs, reallocations of roles and responsibilities, and the accompanying job insecurities. It highlights the everyday stressors likely to impact managers and employees, such as working with difficult people and managing increased workloads. This insightful new volume also offers useful and practical strategies for dealing with these situations.

Working in a stressful environment not only increases the risk of physical illness or distress, but also increases the likelihood of workplace accidents. While legislation provides some guidelines for risk assessment of physical hazards, there remains limited guidance on the risks of psychosocial hazards, such as occupational stress.
This book takes the risk management approach to stress evaluation in the workplace, offering practical guidelines for the audit, assessment and mitigation of workplace stressors. Based on both research and case-studies, this book provides a comprehensive source of theoretical and practical information for students and practitioners alike.

                    Book Description

The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) has commissioned recent research which has indicated that: . about half a million people in the UK experience work-related stress at a level they believe is making them ill; . up to 5 million people in the UK feel "very" or "extremely" stressed by their work; and . a total of 12.8 million working days were lost to stress, depression and anxiety in 2004/5. Work-related stress is therefore a serious problem and tackling it effectively can result in significant benefits for organizations. This can result in a happier and more productive workforce with fewer days away from work with stress related illnesses. Managers will also want to comply with recent HSE advice on managing stress within the workplace fulfilling their duty of care to employees. This should result in less exposure of organisations to the threat of litigation and the resultant negative publicity this causes. The intention of this book is to provide information to those who may be suffering from work related stress and to provide managers with a "toolkit" to help address such problems in the workforce.

                      Book Description

Allcorn and Diamond argue that the workplace has become ever more threatening to employees, and that they respond by creating psychological defenses that make the workplace ever more dysfunctional. To keep organizations competitive and sustain the value of their stock, management demands constant improvements in their employees' performance, but often the result is just the opposite of what management wants. Allcorn and Diamond explore this process in depth, and introduce a comprehensive and internally consistent, psychologically informed model of human development and behavior, one that explains for the first time the nature of the psychologically defensive workplace. In doing so, they challenge readers to think systematically about the psychological side of the workplace and to understand the importance of dealing effectively with employee defensiveness. The result is an authoritative study with valuable lessons and immediate benefits for corporate executives, and for scholars and researchers in organizational behavor in the academic community. Allcorn and Diamond's model is applicable to understanding five aspects of the workplace: first, how individuals respond to its stresses and anxieties; second, the psychologically defensive nature of interpersonal relationships at work; third, what the psychologically defensive group processes are; fourth, the dynamics of psychological defenses; and fifth, how the model is used to understand the connection of all organizations to the larger society in which they are imbedded. The authors' goal is to help management understand what actually is going on in today's workplace, the consequence of downsizing and other cost-reduction initiatives, and how important it is for management for relieve the problems they cause.
