5 out of 5 stars A Great Place to Start.......2002-04-19

I used the acid test for considering how well written a technical book is about my business - I gave it to my wife when she asked me some questions one day.

I have had this book on my shelf for several months and found it extremely valuable in doing some quick general research and in exploring a variety of concepts dealing with planned giving. Written for the small shop (in my opinion) that needs to develop a planned giving program, this is a well-written and easily read book covering A to Z.

Topics start with what is planned giving, move through defining and discussing philanthropy, setting up a planned giving program (first steps), pitfalls to avoid, marketing planned giving and even sample gift instruments. These are but a few of the chapters in what I think is an excellent starting point for someone new to planned gifts and how to promote them (or even a pro looking for some fresh ideas).

Ah yes, my wife. For her, this was a bit of a liberating experience - she now has a good grasp of what I do. She can converse with friends about the business of planned giving very comfortably with a much better understanding of the basics.

    Book Description

    Planned Giving Simplified

A down-to-earth introduction to planned giving by a leading pioneer in the field.

In this groundbreaking book, charitable gift planning expert Robert F. Sharpe, Sr., demystifies the complex world of planned giving for not-for-profit managers. He provides a detailed blueprint for starting and building a successful planned giving program, and develops a rational framework for managing the subtle interplay of legal, administrative, and interpersonal factors involved in the planned giving process.

Central to Sharpe's proven approach is his controversial definition of the effective charitable gift planner as being not so much a fund raiser as an expert at helping potential benefactors satisfy a deeply felt emotional need. Rather than soliciting or closing on planned gifts, the planner's primary focus should be on forming relationships with donors and providing them with the means and opportunity to fulfill their desire to do good.

Using compelling case studies, Sharpe demonstrates his approach in action. He identifies the various types of planned gifts and takes you inside the hearts and minds of the planned givers themselves, revealing their primary motivations and overarching concerns. He then guides you, step-by-step, through the entire planned giving process, and concludes with a clear delineation of the organizational structures required to sustain a planned giving program.

    Praise for Planned Giving Simplified

"This book is a must for all who are serious about establishing or maintaining a successful gift planning program for their institution." —Nancy L. Perazelli, CFRE Gift Planning Officer, Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa.

"In his own inimitable style, Bob Sharpe has done an admirable job of describing the planned giving process in an easy-to-understand manner. Woven throughout is the emphasis on the important human relationship between the donor and the charitable gift planner." —Walter T. Weaver, III Director, Finance Support Division, Boy Scouts of America.

"Robert F. Sharpe, Sr., has provided a comprehensive road map of the world of planned giving. He guides [readers] to the desired destination without unnecessary detours along the way. His book will be a valuable addition to the libraries of not only not-for-profit professionals, but also 'givers' who seek a better understanding of the many routes available to them in their gift planning." —Joseph H. Powell President Emeritus and Senior Consultant, Baptist Memorial Health Care Corporation.

"The name Bob Sharpe is synonymous with planned giving. I don't know of anybody who knows more about it and who can better convey its importance." —Reverend Dr. Arthur Caliandro Pastor, Marble Collegiate Church, New York City.

"I really like [this book]. It is . . . elegantly simple, direct, and forthright. . . . very enjoyable." —Thomas W. Cullinan, JD Executive Director of Gift Planning, University of Maryland.

    3 out of 5 stars Pretty basic.......2006-02-17

It's a basic primer on Planned Giving. Great for someone who does not know much about planned gifts, who is involved in the process, how to seek and secure gifts, and how to ensure success within an organization. The book jacket says, "A down-to-earth introduction to planned giving," which is exactly accurate.

5 out of 5 stars Planned Giving 101.......2001-01-03

This is an excellent primer on planned giving. The author provides definitions and examples of many useful terms in an easy-to-read format. The examples clarify the different options available and the benefits of each. The emphasis on planned giving as a GIFT to charitable institutions is refreshing in a field that talks often of tax advantages. Mr. Sharpe highlights the human side of planned giving, noting the importance of establishing a relationship with donors, and acknowledging gifts.

As a former life insurance salesperson, the author is somewhat biased in favor of life insurance products, However, he does provide numerous illustrations of all types and realistic scenarios, as well as a wealth of experience.

The format is clear, and topics are covered well and methodically. Mr. Sharpe's organization of subjects makes this an ideal primer - think of it as a textbook for Planned Giving 101. This is a good source for the professional or organization just starting to consider planned giving, and a wonderful reference for those with more experience.

With its engaging use of metaphor and detailed discussion guide, Shadows of the Neanderthal is a must-have resource for any organization on its own quest for clear and open communication.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect book for a half-day seminar in business management.......2007-05-01

Plato's allegory of the cave is a story that everyone must read in order to claim to be educated. In it, people are permanently located in a cave with their back to the entrance. The shadows of what takes place outside the cave appears on the wall and the residents use that information to reach conclusions regarding what is outside. It is designed to show you that much of what you think you know is only a faint shadow of what the world really is.
This story begins in that vein; Unga, Bunga, Oogie, Boogie and Trevor are cave dwellers with a fear of the outside. They watch the shadows and reach conclusions and each has a different opinion regarding what terrible fate would befall them if they ever set foot outside their domain. They eat only what blows into the cave, so their diet consists largely of dried plant life and dead insects.
Eventually, Boogie expresses a desire to explore the exterior world, an opinion that immediately gets him ostracized. When he leaves, he discovers an amazing world of animals and vegetation. He wanders until he encounters a wise man named Mike, who tells him how it used to be.
In the old days, there was a major civilization that built towers to see what was beyond their immediate vicinity. In one direction, there were enormous herds of wild animals and in the other direction there were abundant fruits and vegetables there for the harvesting. There were two groups, each of which looked in only one direction. This led to an immediate split, one group wanted to build spears and other hunting tools while the other wanted to build baskets for gathering. Neither side would budge from their position, which led to a battle for control. This battle led to separate groups retreating into caves, where they remained to this day.
After the initial story of the cave dwellers, there is a serious discussion of the meaning of the tale. You are asked to ponder the significance of the story and how it relates to the modern business world. With the advent of global markets and the instantaneous transfer of information, for most companies a strategy of staying put is suicide. Each and every day, someone in the company must be examining all of the fundamental assumptions used to justify the business decisions.
This is a short book that is perfect for the half-day management seminar. Illustrated and only 81 pages long, it can be read in about an hour and is packed with information designed to get you thinking about your approach to life, work and career.

Fun and easy read but compelling! This is a book that I will want to keep on my bookshelf and revisit. A must read for managers, educators, and leaders.
Just as enjoyable and illuminating, Outlearning the Wolves, again, by David Hutchens.

Simple, yet powerful. A fun way to learn and very effective for group discussion.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource!.......2000-07-03

I really enjoyed this book! The author's clever sense of humor and the great illustrations make a difficult subject--mental models--fun and easy to learn about. I think the book would help any company, family, or even couple get better at exploring why they think the way they do, and how to communicate better with colleagues and loved ones. The discussion guide at the end of the book makes it easy to start using the ideas in your day-to-day life.

5 out of 5 stars Should be required reading if responsible for company growth.......1999-08-13

David Hutchens brings new insight and twists to an age old metaphor. This book begins with a humorous tale whose analogy, to the world in which we live and the mental models which we hold, will hit you between the eyes. The writer quickly points out problems every organization battles with to improve performance and grow. While the business culture has become so overwhelmed with change, many leaders have embraced their current state of affairs. Holding tight to what we have, we spend much of our energy trying not to lose market share. This book gives insight into why and when this happens and how to move from there. "In a world of chaotic information, the mind instantly locks onto that which it already knows--and simply filters out other data." (from Shadows of the Neanderthal) I'm glad I bought it. Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Leadership Wisdom.......2006-06-25

This is a good introductory book into the principles and practice of leadership. It teaches about the leadership skills that are critical in today's highly dynamic operating environment where change is the only constant. In this case, it is essential to have leaders (rather than managers) who can provide the vision for the organization, show the direction and motivate people towards the realization of the vision.

The author clearly explains the critical attributes of a leader which include team building, good communication skills, decision making ability, and the ability to motivate and coach others for the effective accomplishment of goals.

The book is a good investment for those who in leadership positions, particularly those who are at the beginning of their careers in this field without much experience or previous training. The author gives useful tips which are excellent guide readers. The checklist at the end of each chapter is a useful tool to reinforce what the reader would have studied in the text.

2 out of 5 stars Common Sense Stuff.......2005-10-24

I found this book only provides common sense stuff, not very insightful. There are numerous grammatical errors throughout this book.

    4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2005-04-04

If this book were an entrée, it would mostly consist of meat and potatoes. Author Marlene Caroselli accompanies her valuable handbook on the basics of leadership with insightful quotations and anecdotes. "Basic" is the operative word here. The book makes no pretense, for example, of delving into the theoretical side of leadership development. Nor does it prepare managers for specific business tasks that they're more likely to encounter as leaders, such as budgeting and strategic planning. Rather, this book is specifically tailored for current managers who have leadership ambitions, and for newly minted leaders who need a little expertise to seize control of their new roles. We recommend it as a solid menu option with lots of good advice for that eager-to-lead audience. The book is thoroughly crafted to achieve its purpose, though more experienced readers may find themselves asking, "Where's the gravy?"

5 out of 5 stars High on the "must read" list.......2001-02-06

Leadership Skills for Managers(published by McGraw-Hill) provides some unusual slants on the topic of leadership. For example, the assertion that "leaders form strategic alliances" was something I hadn't considered before. The Prism of Partnerships showed exactly how to form such alliances. Thank you for some new slants on an old subject.

    5 out of 5 stars Real Asset.......2001-02-06

This book is a real asset to any business manager - a must read- easy to follow - great tips for sound management.

Organizational Dimensions of Global Change is the first book in a new series designed to facilitate, across discipline and national boundaries, an emergent dialogue around the issue of global change and cooperative potential. Written by an interdisciplinary group of leading scholars, the book explores how organizational scholarship and thinking can inform an understanding of global change issues and examines the potential of cooperation as a practice, an organizing accomplishment, and as a value for understanding issues of global change. It opens up conversations and research paths and addresses basic questions such as: What do we mean by global change research? What can organizational scholarship contribute to understanding the human dimensions of global change? If we were to offer a priority agenda for research and inquiry, what questions would we be asking and what kinds of research would have a high probability of making a large contribution to knowledge as well as a timely relevance for action? Topics discussed include global women leaders, corporations as agents of global change, international networking, the development of global environmental regimes, and collaborative knowledge creation. Organizational Dimensions of Global Change is an essential resource for students and scholars in the fields of organization and management science, policy studies, international relations and development studies, earth systems science, as well as the disciplines of sociology, economics, anthropology, political science, and psychology.

        Book Description

This book challenges the widely accepted notion that globalization encourages economic convergence--and, by extension, cultural homogenization--across national borders. A systematic comparison of organizational change in Argentina, South Korea, and Spain since 1950 finds that global competition forces countries to exploit their distinctive strengths, resulting in unique development trajectories.

Analyzing the social, political, and economic conditions underpinning the rise of various organizational forms, Guillén shows that business groups, small enterprises, and foreign multinationals play different economic roles depending on a country's path to development. Business groups thrive when there is foreign-trade and investment protectionism and are best suited to undertake large-scale, capital-intensive activities such as automobile assembly and construction. Their growth and diversification come at the expense of smaller firms and foreign multinationals. In contrast, small and medium enterprises are best fitted to compete in knowledge-intensive activities such as component manufacturing and branded consumer goods. They prosper in the absence of restrictions on export-oriented multinationals.

The book ends on an optimistic note by presenting evidence that it is possible--though not easy--for countries to break through the glass ceiling separating poor from rich. It concludes that globalization encourages economic diversity and that democracy is the form of government best suited to deal with globalization's contingencies. Against those who contend that the transition to markets must come before the transition to ballots, Guillén argues that democratization can and should precede economic modernization. This is applied economic sociology at its best--broad, topical, full of interesting political implications, and critical of the conventional wisdom.

            Book Description

Throughout Europe, governments have acted in accordance with the conviction that a larger and uniform market would enable greater economics of scale and the growth of large corporations. This is seen in terms of the spread of multinational, US-style companies, enforcing a uniform type of firm across countries. The contributions to this volume, in contrast, show how the nature of firms is embedded in the larger societal context of nations, preventing a homogenised firm-type spreading across European countries. It becomes clear that researchers should locate the firm in the social context in which it is rooted, rather than looking to economic science to explain a 'non-ideal type.' Areas covered by the contributors include the comparison of typical firms in Denmark adn Finland; the limited transformation of large enterprises in Hungary; and an analysis of supply networks in Britain and Germany. Through these essays and a discussion of the variations in the nature of the firm in Europe by leading Eur

              4 out of 5 stars A Must Follow-Up to the Forest Ranger.......2007-07-03

Organizations have strong tendencies not to change, but when they do, what are their limitations? Herbert Kaufman lays out the obstacles to and tendencies of change in organizations and addresses organizational survival and death. Kaufmans' argument is clear, change in organizations is a volatile and risky endeavor, because attempts such as reorganization, for example, can upset the informal system (53), and often `stimulates its own limiting forces (76).' Further, change can restrict other organizational features. For example, outside resources make organizations dependent on external forces. The way Kaufman describes change in organizations is almost like a rubics' cube. While trying to make one side one particular color, the other sides of the cube gets' disrupted. Unlike in his earlier book "The Forest Ranger" organizational forces no longer seem centrifugal, but more like a forest clean-up with trip wires. When the equilibrium of the organization is altered, it should be expected that something else is going to be affected. Luckily, all of the latter does not seem so vague in the book. Kaufman is able to guide the reader to what would predictively change when altering the organization, as well as strategies to help the organization cope with that change.
In this book, Kaufman separates the organizational system with the internal humanistic problems. Parralleling the logic of organizational theorist Robert Merton (1957)organizational systems and individuals are not mutually exclusive. However, in this book Kaufman does separate the two to a certain extent. Maybe this was a strategic approach to make the book easier to read.
Kaufmans' book is highly theoretical and stands on its own logic if the underlying theories by other organizational theorist presented are not known to the reader. Again, the way Kaufman describes change in organizations is almost like a rubics' cube. While trying to make one side one particular color, the three other sides of the cube gets' disrupted. But describing what a puzzle looks like is different than putting it together. Kaufman offers the strategies to do so through this book. Kaufman elaborates why organizational forces are not centrifugal. Overall, a good read.
