They said that it was the second edition and it's not. I bought the book and probably I'll have to buy the newest edition.
Dry but Useful........2005-09-23
This book surveys major ideas in comparative Urban Geography. It is not a fun read, but it is chock full of useful information presented in text, chart and table forms. For those of us studying international relations or geography it is a useful resource with information that can undergird our research and writing in any number of areas that deal with cities throughout the world.

This book examines the impact of globalization on frontier cities, and how various frontier cities in different regions have responded to these forces. The volume includes a number of theoretical chapters exploring various aspects of global change, including the economic, spatial and geopolitical dimensions. A longer section includes a number of case studies of frontier cities that have adapted to these changes. A number of countries as well as city types, from small towns to frontier metropolises, are examined, providing a broad overview of developmental alternatives. Emphasis is placed on the importance of initiatives from below, that is, efforts that do not depend on the planning and budgetary resources of national governments, since these are generally no longer forthcoming in an era of government down-sizing. Audience: The book will appeal to students in planning, geography, economics and regional studies, as well as to local officials who are concerned with urban development strategies, and their prospects in the new millennium.

Geographies of Difference powerfully documents the multitude of socio-educational processes that construct differentiated students, educators, and edu-cational practices within cities. Through a case study of a large metropolitan school district, this book identifies how the conversations and practices of educators, citywide media, and political relations codify students, schools, and city spaces with spatial metaphors that obscure as well as denote meanings about race and social class. It argues that through these practices of codification, educational processes of constructing and differentiating populations and spaces work in concert with broader city media and political discourses to create differentiated curricular and pedagogical offerings for students in different parts of the city. Geographies of Difference also posits that these overlapping school and citywide practices result in propelling and naturalizing re-segregated schools and cities. Geographies of Difference is written for students and scholars working in urban education, multicultural education, media studies, and social foundation.

For the antagonist, private communities are icons of post-consensus, fragmenting civic society, enclosing and excluding by contractual constitution and sometimes by walls and gates. For others they are simply an efficient new way of organizing urban life.
Private Cities brings together an international team of authors in an attempt to construct an interdisciplinary discourse on the global spread of private communities based upon empirical evidence. Case studies from the US, Latin America, the Middle East, Europe and China are used to explore local and global explanations of the phenomenon. Two distinct propositions emerge from the analysis, firstly that private neighborhoods are a manifestation of the processes bound up in the globalization of culture and economy. Alternatively they can be seen to emerge and adapt locally. Unifying the chapters is the notion that private neighborhoods are a new territorial form of organization on a local scale.
The volume takes an institutionalist approach, developing a model in which cities are shaped by the interplay of local and global processes and evolve at the interface of spontaneous and planned order. It seeks to draw together the various themes, propositions and hypotheses in a way that clarifies the questions asked in different ways by different social science perspectives and in a way that poses researchable questions and new agendas.

The author interviews black male and female judges from the state and federal judiciary. The interviews are thought provoking and detailed. You are given a glimpse into each judge's perspective from the bench and, in most cases, afforded their political commentary. Most of the judges interviewed are cognizant of the historical racism present in our legal system. The judges are proud, intelligent and strive to set an example as jurists and as people of color. I was so very moved by this book.
