Book Description
Trade theories predict and explain the consequences of economic integration. Generally, they show that freer international trade leads to specialisation, technological convergence and faster economic growth. This study compares the conclusions of the trade theories with empirical observations of economic changes in the European Union. These empirical analyses show that the main conclusions also hold empirically. However, many detailed empirical observations often contrast the theoretical expectation. Hence, although the trade theories do predict the general changes correctly, they are not capable of predicting the more specific empirical outcomes.
The empirical analyses use intercountry input-output tables in constant prices with 6 EU countries (Germany, France, Italy, The Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark) of the years 1970, 1975, 1980 and 1985. These data prove to be a valuable contribution to analysing the economic effects of international integration, since they provide a consistent database that can be used to analyse many economic aspects, such as technology, specialisation, intra-industry trade, economic growth, sectoral distribution, and direct and indirect effects.
This book will be especially useful to Regional Economists and Economists specialising in international trade, input-output analysis or European integration.

Bridging the Gap Between College and Law School: Strategies for Success

Book Description
May It Please the Court presents the story of one man's rise from a struggling sole practitioner to the senior partner of the largest suburban law firm in the United States. Although this book is an autobiography of attorney Leonard Rivkin, it is much more. Because of its wealth of information and insights into the life of an attorney, the book could have been titled:
So You Want to Be a Lawyer? - since it goes into the real life practice of law as well as the pragmatic ups and downs of a law practice; or
What Law Schools Don't Teach You - since it covers "getting" new clients, how to hold clients, the general marketing of a law office, solid tips on how to run a law office, and many other practical aspects that are rarely, if ever, covered in law school; or even
Lawyers Behind Closed Doors - since it shows how legal strategies evolved in some of the most well-know cases of our generation. The reader goes behind the scenes into the conference room as well as the courtroom and get a look at defense tactics utilized in cases such as Agent Orange (then the largest mass tort case of its time); Franklin Nation Bank (then the country's largest bank failure); Asbestos, and many others. May It Please the Court is a great antidote to current media perceptions of lawyers (Ally McBeal, etc.) and a real-life balance to popular novelists such as John Grisham and Scott Thurow. Every young or would-be lawyer will benefit from reading this book, as will practicing attorneys. And with our society's fascination with legal matters, general audiences will find this a readable, engaging look at the legal world.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome.......2003-06-20
This is a fascinating review of a very interesting life. The "greatest generation" didn't always lead to such incredible success, but in this case Rivkin took his GI money to law school, a one person practice and built it into a big law firm despite incredible odds, some real setbacks and a lot of determination. The inside story on the Agent Orange case was a real eye opener even for another lawyer but would be just as interesting (maybe even more so) for lay people. Highly recommend.
May It Please The Court!.......2000-06-21
.
I found Leonard Rivkin's book, "May It Please The Court!" to be very entertaining, interesting, and very easy to read. My trepidation of picking up and reading a book written by a lawyer were totally unfounded.
I expected to be bored by legal mumbo jumbo and boring statistics. It was quite a pleasant surprise to find the book reading more like a novel. My principle purpose was to read the chapters on Agent Orange. Mr.Rivkin's accounting of the "behind the scenes" activities and proceedings truly opened my eyes to many obscure, but highly pertinent details and facts. I have come away with a new attitude toward the subject.
My assessment of this book, and Mr. Rivkin's ability to shed light on Agent Orange where it has not been shown before, gets my "two thumbs up".

Use with the text.......2004-11-27
This handbook is only for the companion with the textbook, not a systematic introduction in SAS. If your teacher use "Learning and Practicing Econometrics" for text, you should get this handbook. This handbook definitely help you in getting good grade and femiliar with SAS by practicing. However, it means this book is nearly useless if you do not have the text.
Very good.......2003-05-08
I have read both hardcover texts by these authors (Undergraduate Econometrics & Learning and Practicing Econometrics) This book follows very closely with the examples presented in the textbook. Unfortunately the book doesn't go into more advanced topics(eg. Poisson, Negative Binomial...). Comparing it to other books, it is much easier to read than Green's Econometric Analysis, but does not go into the greater depth of topics as Green. IMO it helped me learn SAS quite a bit. Four months ago I had no idea how to use it.
Econometrics and SAS were meant to be together.......2000-04-28
I thought that this manual really helped me in my job. It was a great aid to the knowledge that I already had about SAS and has been a wonderful resource for me.

delightful Cambodian tale.......2002-05-22
Cathy Spagnoli has again done an excellent job of adapting a spoken folk tale into a picture book text - a task that is much more difficult than it appears. Nancy Hom's illustrations include the Khemer text. While few will be able to read the Khemer, it is an excellent way to introduce children to the concept of different alphabets. The tale itself is a simple tale of a newlywed heading off to war only to have a tree spirit impersonate the groom to the bride. When the true groom returns, a wise rabbit serves a judge to set the world back in order. As with many of the animal folktales, there is a gentle moral to the story ... far gentler than the Western Aesop tradition.

Do not waste your money on this so-called book. It is a pamphlet that has little if any value. Very dissapointing.

I was very disappointed with this book. It only included a few essential words and phrases, far from essential vocabulary needed for these three professions. One could do better looking up individual words in a Spanish/English dictionary. If I had been able to look at this book, I definitely would never have purchased the book.

Book Description
Since many legal disputes are battles over the meaning of a statute, contract, testimony, or the Constitution, judges must interpret language in order to decide why one proposed meaning overrides another. And in making their decisions about meaning appear authoritative and fair, judges often write about the nature of linguistic interpretation. In the first book to examine the linguistic analysis of law, Lawrence M. Solan shows that judges sometimes inaccurately portray the way we use language, creating inconsistencies in their decisions and threatening the fairness of the judicial system.
Solan uses a wealth of examples to illustrate the way linguistics enters the process of judicial decision making: a death penalty case that the Supreme Court decided by analyzing the use of adjectives in a jury instruction; criminal cases whose outcomes depend on the Supreme Court's analysis of the relationship between adverbs and prepositional phrases; and cases focused on the meaning of certain words in the Constitution. Solan finds that judges often describe our use of language poorly because there is no clear relationship between the principles of linguistics and the jurisprudential goals that the judge wishes to promote.
A major contribution to the growing interdisciplinary scholarship on law and its social and cultural context, Solan's lucid, engaging book is equally accessible to linguists, lawyers, philosophers, anthropologists, literary theorists, and political scientists.
Customer Reviews:
Great idea, modest execution........2002-08-15
A linguistic perspective on legal language is a valuable contribution to the study of language and the law. Mr. Solan, with degrees in linguistics and law, is the right author to tackle the subject. And the book has its strong aspects, such as when Solan discusses the details of real cases and shows how judges interpreted language inconsistently, or badly, or in the only way they could. Plus, his insights into the nonlinguistic forces that act on judges are useful.
But the book could have used a strong edit. There are too many convoluted sentences; I found myself re-reading for comprehension too often. I found a bit too much abstraction, too. And the constant foreshadowing in the early chapters ("as I'll discuss in chapter 5 . . .") became very annoying.
If the essence of great nonfiction is making complex material understandable, then this book is average.

Book Description
"The free press cannot be free," Robert Entman asserts. "Inevitably, it is dependent." In this penetrating critique of American journalism and the political process, Entman identifies a "vicious circle of interdependence" as the key dilemma facing reporters and editors. To become sophisticated citizens, he argues, Americans need high-quality, independent political journalism; yet, to stay in business while producing such journalism, news organizations would need an audience of sophisticated citizens. As Entman shows, there is no easy way out of this dilemma, which has encouraged the decay of democratic citizenship as well as the media's continuing failure to live up to their own highest ideals. Addressing widespread despair over the degeneration of presidential campaigns, Entman argues that the media system virtually compels politicians to practice demagoguery. Entman confronts a provocative array of issues: how the media's reliance on elite groups and individuals for information inevitably slants the news, despite adherence to objectivity standards; why the media hold government accountable for its worst errors--such as scandals and foreign misadventures--only after it's too late to prevent them; how the interdependence of the media and their audience molds public opinion in ways neither group alone can control; why greater media competition does not necessarily mean better journalism; why the abolition of the FCC's Fairness Doctrine could make things worse. Entman sheds fascinating light on important news events of the past decade. He compares, for example, coverage of the failed hostage rescue in 1980, which subjected President Carter to a barrage of criticism, with coverage of the 1983 bombing that killed 241 Marines in Lebanon, an incident in which President Reagan largely escaped blame. He shows how various factors unrelated to the reality of the events themselves--the apparent popularity of Reagan and unpopularity of Carter, differences in the way the Presidents publicly framed the incidents, the potent symbols skillfully manipulated by Reagan's but not by Carter's news managers--produced two very different kinds of reportage. Entman concludes with some thoughtful suggestions for improvement. Chiefly, he proposes the creation of subsidized, party-based news outlets as a way of promoting new modes of news gathering and analysis, of spurring the established media to more innovative coverage, and of increasing political awareness and participation. Such suggestions, along with the author's probing media criticisms, make this book essential reading for anyone concerned about the state of democracy in America.

Customer Reviews:
The Best French Grammar (but not a new edition).......2006-05-03
There is no doubt that Judge and Healey have written the best French grammar around in the English language. It doesn't just discuss the rules, but also provides an ample amount of historical, linguistic, and stylistic information about the whys and wherefores. To reveal my bias, I like reading about things that I find interesting and engaging. If you want a grammar with tons of examples and exercises, with a pure, regimented presentation, this is not the grammar for you--there are no exercises at all. This is the kind of grammar you read to find out how things work in the language, and how to make stylistic choices. It can help you tune your mind to the finer distinctions. For example, it might help you to build an image in your mind of how a native speaker of French might feel about two variations: a sentence with or without an expletive "ne," for example. It's not going to help you too much if you frequently worry about how to conjugate verbs, in my opinion. But you might find it very helpful if you want a full treatment of the deeper meaning of the pass? compos?, pass? simple, and impafait, and how they contrast.
The one warning I wanted to convey is that although this is listed as a _second_ edition, it is identical to the older red, white, and blue edition published by Arnold. The same is the case with the NTC one with the blue, yellow, and black cover. (For reference, the one in the Amazon picture at the time of this writing is black, lavender, and white.) Therefore, if you have one of the older ones, don't make the same mistake as I did and think that this edition in an update... It is a facsimile of the original from a different publisher.
