                      5 out of 5 stars A very interesting book.......2000-02-08

This book gathers together a range of thoughtful responses to the PK phenomenon. I like the fact that the contributors sometimes disagree with each other. They represent different perspectives on what it means to keep promises, and whether such promises need be based in Christianity or might simply promote ethical ways of treating other people. Doubtless, there are strains of homophobia AND homoeroticism in the PK movement; and I don't buy their old-fashioned and rather patronizing ideas about motherhood. But it's good to see men thinking carefully about their lives and relationships. This book certainly pushes along that discussion in useful ways.

                        Book Description

"Most popular discussions of men and gender treat masculinity as an entirely psychological issue. This book edited by Cliff Cheng, part of a new wave of research on masculinity, shows the issues are much wider. Gender is an aspect of organizational life, workplace culture, and business politics. Vivid and sometimes surprising case studies--including the space shuttle disaster, an all-male military collage, and the ethnically mixed management of a Japanese-American firm--show different forms of masculinity in the making and under challenge. Conceptual and empirical chapters in the book both enrich our understanding of hegemonic masculinity, and raise intriguing questions about non-hegemonic masculinities. The issues explored in the book are important for organizational studies, for the social science of gender, and for all concerned with the future patterns of power in our business-dominated world." --R.W. Connell, Univeristy of Sydney, Australia, and author of Masculinities "Cliff Cheng's newest contribution to the study of men and masculinities as a gender within and outside other group memberships is a welcome addition to embedded intergroup relations theory." --Clayton P. Alderfer, "This volume fills a gap in our knowledge by providing empirical studies of the role masculine genders play in various, diverse organizations. Studies of the Challenger disaster and American managers in Japanese-owned firms were especially fascinating because they show so clearly the multiple masculinities that arise in different occupations and racial groups. Studies of the Citadel and law firms provide interesting insights into how hegemonic masculinities operate. Still, other chapters present new theorizing and quantitative results. Overall, an impressive collection of work that offers a wealth of ideas for future research and informed teaching and practice." --Janice M. Beyer, Graduate School of Business, The University of Texas, Austin The latest volume in the Research on Men and Masculinities series, Masculinities in Organizations provides an interdisciplinary, cross-cultural study of masculinities in organizational settings. Editor Cliff Cheng sheds light on misconceptions that have plagued the study of organizations and discusses workplace roles and the ways they relate to and affect masculinity. This book makes an effective case both that sex and gender are not synonymous and that masculinity is not homogeneous. The book will add to a growing literature that calls for pro-social change in groups and organizations to overcome the problem of hegemonic masculinity. Timely and provocative, Masculinities in Organizations will be an invaluable resource for anyone interested in organizational behavior, organizational studies, gender roles, and men's studies.

3 out of 5 stars Men's Studies Enters the Boardroom.......2006-10-26

This was an informative, intersectional analysis combining men's studies and organizational behavior. The anthology has a nice range in topics. Michael Messner once wrote that women, generally, are more interested in men's studies than men, so it is not surprising that slightly more women than men contributed chapters to this work. Do know that two of the nine chapters are printed in the Fourth Edition of "Men's Lives."

Gender studies scholarship maintains that gender affects everything. For those that believe that claim, as I do, this book helps spell unique ways in which this occurs. However, this book will frustrate those who do not believe that claim. In one chapter, the author says men take risks and that masculine drive may have played a role in the 1986 Challenger explosion. Others would say greed and poor planning caused that, not masculinity. One chapter said perhaps women don't enter the computer industry when users employ language like "aborting" programs. Political fights over abortion, some would say, have nothing to do with the semantics that "to abort" means "to halt anything in progress." Skeptics of gender studies should be warned.

Each chapter cites and supports the work of R.W. Connell. For examples, the contributors take as a given that there are multiple masculinities, not just one. They contrast the masculinity of engineers versus businessmen, Americans versus foreigners, and white men versus Asian men. This differs radically from Lisa Lindsay's "Men and Masculinities in Modern Africa" in which each chapter challenges Connell. The book is daring in writing that "masculinities can be performed by women and men" rather than stating "masculinities can be performed by men and women." I loved the irony and gender-transgression of that statement.

                        Book Description

This collection of essays explores the varied, sometimes contradictory, and often misapprehended nature of the Promise Keepers. The various media portrayals of this group do not adequately address important questions about their significance for American religious, social, and cultural life. Is this movement anti-feminist, or are the men involved using their faith to become more responsible husbands and fathers? Is this a political movement, or just another example of an American religious revival? Using interviews, surveys, and on-site participations, the scholars writing here find little truth in the popular depictions of Promise Keepers. In fact, they demonstrate how this group represents a variety of templates that contemporary American culture brings to religion as a general social phenomenon. The volume examines the ways religion affects social movements, and also puts the current interest in men and masculinity in a larger historical context of changing gender roles. As a phenomenon that strikes right at the intersection of religion, gender, racial relations, public life, and national identity, Promise Keepers will be provocative reading for students, scholars, and educated readers alike.

                        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not for the average reader, but excellent for academics.......2003-01-22

It is kind of difficult to rate an academic book. I give this one three stars because it doesn't particularly flow. I think it could also stand to have something of a history on the Promise Keepers at some point, but I'll get to that in a minute.

I read this book because I work with the editor of the book, Rhys H. Williams. The book is essentially six academic papers/essays reporting findings on the Promise Keepers . Rhys H. Williams gives an introduction to the book and his sister, Gwyneth Williams gives an epilogue/postscript exploring the change roles and expectations of men as father's and husbands.

In the introduction, Rhys explains how the book came together and of what it consists. He also briefly talks about how difficult it is to approach a social phenomenon and gain an understanding of it. And, Rhys includes very brief comments on each of the chapters in the book. I felt the introduction could have better grounded the reader by first including a history of the Promise Keepers. It would not have to be a very long history, but detailed enough for the reader to understand the group that that is being studied.

The chapters include qualitative and quantitative studies examining different aspects of the Promise Keepers. The chapters range from how the Promise Keepers view race to the different gender roles that are espoused by the movement's leaders and the movement's participants.

After reading the monograph (it isn't really a book), I did feel that I had a better understanding of the Promise Keepers. As the monograph explains, the Promise Keepers, though definitely situated further on the right than on the left in political and religious terms, are not exclusively so. There is a wide variety of views within the group and an increasing variety of educational levels and ethnicities.

Overall, the book is academic in nature and not for the average reader. In a sense this may be 'too bad' because the information contained in the monograph could be very useful for individuals that are considering joining the group but would not be readily accessible as easy reading for them.

If you have an academic interest in the Promise Keepers then this book is likely a must. Or, if you interested in social movements and religion, this book might also be of interest to you. But for the average layperson that does not have a background in the social sciences, this probably isn't the book you're looking for.

                          Book Description

"Finally! A book that not only shows how the problem of 'school violence' is really a problem of boys' violence, but also a book that offers concrete, gender-based interventions to help all of us - parents, teachers, community - work to reduce it. It is not an overstatement to say that this book will save lives" - Professor Michael Kimmel, SUNY Stony Brook.

"This is an important book in which Martin Mills provides a carefully argued analysis of gender-based violence in schools as well as a wealth of strategies for challenging its many facets. Challenging Violence in Schools is a grim reminder that the current narrow fixation with academic achievement needs to be broadened if schools are to act responsibly in playing their part in making the future. This book should be compulsory reading for all teachers. - Professor Pat Mahony, University of Surrey Roehampton.

"The contemporary concern about boys in schooling most often works within a 'competing victims syndrome', seeking to pit the interests of boys against those of girls. The strength of Martin Mills' book is that it takes a different stance in relation to boys in schooling. It focuses upon the ways dominant constructions of masculinity can lead to inappropriate and dangerous behaviours in schools. These violent behaviours affect the lives of all those in and associated with schools, including many other boys, many girls, as well as teachers. Drawing on research, Mills analyses and seeks to understand these issues and also makes useful recommendations for teachers and others in schools wanting to address these matters. This book is mandatory reading for anyone concerned with this important issue." - Professor Bob Lingard, Graduate School of Education, The University of Queensland.

                          * Why are boys the major perpetrators of violence in schools?
                          * What are the significant issues which schools need to take into account when dealing with boys' violence?
                          * What are some practical strategies for addressing these issues?

This book explores the relationship between violence and masculinity within schools. There is a clear need to explore this relationship. A substantial amount of evidence exists which demonstrates how boys are the major perpetrators of violence in schools - from extreme acts of violence such as school shootings in the US to more common forms of schoolyard bullying - and that both girls and boys are their victims. The book suggests that violence has been 'masculinized' in such a way that boys often perpetrate violence as a means of demonstrating their perception of what counts as a valued form of masculinity. This masculinization of violence has often meant that girls experience violence from boys who are seeking to demonstrate their superiority over girls, and it has also meant that some boys often experience violence due to their non-conformity to dominant images of masculinity. In order to support these arguments the book draws on extensive interview data collected from boys and teachers who were involved in anti-violence programs in their schools.

                            Book Description

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the United States transformed from an essentially agrarian society into an urban, industrialized economy. In Making Men, Making Class, Thomas Winter explores the impact of these profound changes on constructions of manhood, using the YMCA's new efforts to reach out to railroad and industrial workers as a case study.

Starting in the 1870s, the leaders ("secretaries") of the YMCA sought to reduce political radicalism and labor unrest by instilling new ideals of manliness among workers. By involving workingmen in a range of activities on the job and off, the YMCA hoped to foster team spirit, moral conduct, and new standards of manhood that would avoid conflict and instead encourage cooperation along the lines of a Christian, pious manliness. In their efforts to make better men, the secretaries of the YMCA also crafted new ideals of middle-class manliness for themselves that involved a sense of mission and social purpose. In doing so, they ended up "making" class, too, as they began to speak a language of manhood structured by class differences.

                                  Book Description

Despite the trend toward gender studies in the social sciences, studies of masculinity have been largely absent from educational research. This volume presents a collection of the current critical scholarship on the creation of masculinities in schools, relations among competing definitions of masculinity and femininity, and linkages between masculinity and school practices. With contributions from the leading scholars in the field, Nancy Lesko studies masculinities in North American, Australian, and British schools. This book covers all levels of schooling, from preschool to graduate school, and school settings from computer labs to football fields. This fascinating addition to Sage’s Research in Men and Masculinities Series provides a thoughtful examination of how masculinities are constructed among teachers, students, and administrators, locating these analyses within broader social, economic, and ideological contexts. Masculinities at School is a must read for scholars of education, sociology, men’s studies and gender studies.

                                    Book Description

The post-war period is often regarded as a time when Britain underwent its managerial revolution, the family firm and the "gentleman amateur" giving way to the large bureaucracy and the trained management expert. Yet the conception of modern management as an objective process could hardly be further from the truth. Drawing on detailed life-history interviews with the post-war generation of "organization men", this study explores the intimacies that operate among men in management. It argues that despite the rise of professional management, relations between managers continue to function in highly subjective ways. The pleasure of technical innovation or of seeing a new product through to the market, the mixture of rivalry and patronage that surrounds management succession, the hard bargaining of industrial relations: at every level, managerial functions involve the dramatization of emotions among men. By challenging the enduring myth of the rational organization man, this book sheds new light on gender segregation in management. It argues that the exclusion of women from senior positions cannot be understood simply as the outcome of unprofessional practices. A focus on the emotional relations between male managers reveals the psychic dimensions of exclusionary behaviour. An "emotional economy" flourishes among men in management, but its workings have been hidden by the myth of the rational organization man.
