Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A practical primer.......2003-04-10

For those who are interested in the management of organizational knowledge and intangible assets, 'Valuing intangible assets'should prove to be highly practical. There are many knowledge management frameworks out there that assist business executive to manage their intangible assets (such as Sveiby's intangible asset monitor), the practical usage of these frameworks would be greatly enhanced by incorporating the valuation aspect of intangible assets. Reilly has provided a comprehensive illustration of both the 'scientific' & 'artistic' aspects of valuating intangible assets. 'Valuing Intangible Assets' is easy to read & loaded with useful examples, it is a rare one in the market.

5 out of 5 stars Recommend Purchase!.......2002-08-13

A larger portion of the value of a company nowadays comes from Intangibles (brands, patents, workforce & related contracts, durable customers etc.). This holds true in several industry sectors. Measurement of intangibles is a fascinating subject, but until this book was published, there was no single body of knowledge available to guide the general reader, or a Valuation professional. You had to work in one of the reputed valuation firms to be exposed to the techniques. This book is by far the best practitioner-oriented Intangibles Valuation book I have come across. It is very comprehensive in terms of the topics it covers, and does a wonderful job of covering almost all intangibles of interest. Each chapter is written by a relevant expert, and this invariably leads to variations in quality and some lack of consistency. However, for the most part, it is very well written, and definitely worth the price it sells for.

5 out of 5 stars Great Reference Book.......2001-12-31

A great book for anyone or performs valuations of intangible assets or wants to learn how. I believe that this book will become to intangible valuation what Pratt's book is to business valuation.

5 out of 5 stars A complete manual of intangible valuation methods.......2000-08-28

The authors rely on their extensive professional experiences in this field to provide a comprehensive description of the three valuation methods for intangible assets--cost, market, and income methods. Easy to read, this book explains the nuances of each method in more detail than similar books available in the market. It reads more like an accessible textbook than a vague primer on the subject. It also contains many insightful and valuable case examples of how the methods are applied to different real life cases. As an MBA student, I have benefitted greatly from this book and will probably use it as a reference in the future.

I hope future editions will include option pricing valuation methods.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good Title... This book is BASIC.......2005-01-07

This is a college level textbook for complete beginners in the field of Real Estate and specifically Real Estate Appraisal. As such, it gives a nice overview of the profession and of appraisal techniques and not a whole lot more. To get more in depth to the level of feeling professionally competent, you will need to add on with other books and classes. But this is a very good start.

2 out of 5 stars Some other books are better than this one.......2004-03-09

I don't know why colleges use this book as a required textbook. This book is DEFINITELY not a good book for someone who is new to real estate apraisal. The book did't explain things very clear especially some very important things like "Highest and Best Use". There are some other book that explain the real estte concepts better than this one. You definitely will not pass the real estate appraisal exam if you only read this book

3 out of 5 stars RE Appraisal.......2001-11-14

This is a great book that is used in some of the colleges for textbook. It explains the fundamentals of real estate appraisal by using pratical examples which we may experience everyday. In addition, it clearly shows the calculations, number by number with detailed explainations to make the readers easy to understand the concepts. It really helped me a lot in the real estate business.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Small Book -- Good Content.......2007-05-29

I was disappointed when I saw the book. It's much smaller and thinner than I expected. The content is good, but it's not extensive. It's easy to read and a good reference book, but it wasn't what I was looking for.

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Performance Measurement Primer.......2006-09-15

In this quick and easy to read booklet, Jerry L. Harbour manages to provide sufficient information to get you started in the development of a performance measurement system. Of particular interest is the notion of measurement hierarchies which ensures that higher ups can keep a tab on the business without getting swamped in detail.

5 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to Performance Management.......2006-08-06

"The Basics of Performance Measurement" is a scholarly book that explains and presents in a readable and easily understandable manner the basic concepts that underpin performance measurement. The author methodically explains and describes the various types of performance measurement.

1 out of 5 stars Weak Content.......2003-08-06

Unlike other reviews, I am disappointed with this book which I bought based on the hype of other reviewers! ... And the writing style is cheesy, spouting-off some loosely defined quality terms in attempt to add some technical merit to subject matter. Having read the book (forced myself to stay the course), I can honestly say I took-away nothing of value.

Skip the book. ...

5 out of 5 stars The Basics of Performance Measurement.......2001-05-09

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars good conceptual overview.......2001-01-01

Good overview of valuation concepts, but if you want to sit down and actually come up with a number, try "Unlocking the Value of Your Business".

5 out of 5 stars Great resource for novices.......2000-05-11

Will Yegge has the unique ability of being able to present a difficult subject in a logical, intelligent, concise and interesting manner.

Even though I have no background whatsoever in accounting, I was able to follow the information in this book and use it as my primary guide in valuing a company that I was interested in purchasing. It is a great resource for novices.

3 out of 5 stars ....unnecessarily and excruciatingly verbose!.......1999-11-27

Although his work on valuation techniques is straightforward in later chapters, the 1st several chapters do not do an adequate job of explaining the psychology of business valuation, buying or selling or the 'intangible' of business value. Words such as 'steeds' and 'pestilence' belong in literature, not reference manuals. Are Cliff Notes available to decipher just what these chapters are trying to communicate? I am trying to buy a business;lots of hard work lay ahead. Why must this book start off so unclear?

5 out of 5 stars Professional approach with simple expaniations, easy to use.......1999-07-25

In preparation to sell my business for appx $10MM I sought many references on how to make a professional presentation and and use methodology that would be reasonable and logical to lead to a sale. Wilbur has doen a great job with this and his other book, How To Sell A business. I recommend that anyone read there two before putting a package together. I have had many favorable comments from both principals and brokers concerning the structure of the presentation I was able do make using Wilbur's help.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent on both the "art" and "science" of valuation........1998-12-10

Just what I needed as a small business owner who needed a basic understanding of both the art and the science of valuing my company. Heavier read than it looks, since I didn't needed to know everything about non-related businesses. I did need to know how what factors must be considered and how complex some deals could be. Yegge speaks from experience and that is obvious, helpful and most comforting.

              Book Description

Experts from around the world examine an innovative proposal to promote both cultural survival and biological conservation: treating cultural and indigenous knowledge as a form of intellectual property.

Currently the focus of a heated debate among indigenous peoples, human rights advocates, crop breeders, pharmaceutical companies, conservationists, social scientists, and lawyers, the proposal would allow impoverished people in biologically rich areas to realize an economic return from resources under their care. Mone-tary compensation could both validate their knowledge and provide them with an equitable reward for sharing it, thereby compensating biological stewardship and encouraging conservation.

Valuing Local Knowledge presents case studies of programs that recognize indigenous rights, and brings direct experience to bear on the international debate over intellectual property, conservation, and indigenous rights.

3 out of 5 stars Capitalism to the Rescue!.......2000-04-16

This is a well intentioned and very well thought out and developed idea about finding a way to compensate Native cultures for being successful "stewards" of biodiversity. I give it three stars primarily for its footnotes and bibliography so anyone interested in preserving Native cultural diversity yet also interested in accepting and maintaining the power of a global market economy can find further resources. The author excels at the use of the third person passive voice and analyitical reasoning; he obviously knows a lot about biological resources of plants. To some this book will be a hope for justice to Native people, to others it will be literally a "sell out". Good luck deciding which one you will be when YOU finish reading it!

In The Human Value of Enterprise, Andrew Mayo proposes a quantitative methodology that attempts to bring the rigors of financial accounting to human resources management. Mayo sets forth a series of formulas designed to reveal how much each individual is contributing to the overall value that any company creates for its stakeholders. Of course, these formulas are limited by the subjective process through which managers assign values to the activities and results of their employees. That said, the procedures that Mayo outlines can be used as the foundation for a fairly rigorous system of human resource cost accounting that we from getAbstract recommend to all professionals in the field.

                      Book Description

Learn strategies and suggestions about how to increase the value of your company's intangible assets, in particular, your employees.

A knowledge based company's intangible assets are its': people, customers, reputation, intellectual capital, ideas, and time. All of which are the essence of its value. Yet those items don't appear on its balance sheet, explains consultant Lisa M. Aldisert. Her book, Valuing People, offers business decision makers advice on how to increase the value of their companies' most important intangible assets, to stay ahead of the competition and to attract, retain, and motivate top people. In the process, other intangible assets also will appreciate such as over time, increasing the net worth of a company, whether publicly or privately held.

With the increasing shortage of qualified skilled labor, concern for human capital has grown. Major consulting firms have established whole departments around the concept, much has been written, and there's even a magazine called "Human Capital."

We used to talk about "personnel," then the term shifted to "human resources." The same thing, but different words? No. The human resources concept is more broad, more comprehensive, and hopefully more strategic. So what's the difference with this newer term of "human capital?" This concept emphasizes measurement---measuring the value of people to their employing organization. The human capital value doesn't show up on the balance sheet, at least not yet, like other forms of capital. Investors, however, are paying more attention to concerns like staffing levels, worker competency, employee performance, and workforce stability.

Interestingly, while chief human resource officers typically have strong relationships with their chief executive officers, their least effective relationships are with chief financial officers. These results from a recent survey of senior HR executives was quite revealing, demonstrating that human capital valuation has not yet reached all those who should be concerned about it. This book will help. It's written for people who have responsibility for generating revenue, increasing profitability, or enhancing productivity.

The author, a nationally-known consultant and speaker in the field of strategic growth and leadership development, marries the two concepts well in these pages. She starts with The Strategic Importance of Human Capital with three chapters that do a fine job of positioning, education, and stimulating thought. Each chapter is recapped with a summary of key ideas and thinking points. Just flipping to the of each chapter and reading these pages will give you your money's worth from this volume. These chapters cover the broad spectrum of relevant trends and issue to give readers insight into the "why" as well as the "what."

Part Two, Measuring Human Capital, provides an in-depth survey of the measurements being used to value employees today, as well as the organizations that are engaged in this work. In spite of a brief section on moving from theory to practice on page 81, the author does not present any specific recommendations about which process should be used.

Part Three shifts to How to Develop Human Potential in the Firm. The more modern concepts are presented here: attracting talent, developing employees, virtual capital, building leadership, and looking at human capital as an investment in the organization. As an appendix, Aldisert offers her Valuing People AuditSM. It's a check-off list with a 5-point Likert scale exploring how much attention is given to issues that affect the people side of the business. Thus, the book explores well the concept of valuing human capital, but does not definitively provide a step-by-step specific method. There isn't a standard yet, but this book builds the understanding that could provide a platform for such development. First, corporate executives need to understand the concept of valuing their employees as human capital. This book will certainly help.

Good notes section and strong index.
