Financial Crises, Contagion, and the Lender of Last Resort
Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0199247218 |
Book Description
Financial crises, often of an apparently contagious nature, have become more frequent over the last two decades than they were previously. The monetary authorities, especially central banks, and, in the international context, the International Monetary Fund, have had to decide how to handle them. This has revived interest in the analysis of the role of a Lender of Last Resort (LOLR). On the one hand, such LOLR support actions have been accused of contributing to the currently increased frequency of (systemic) crises. By providing a safety net for banking activities, they are said to encourage excessive risk taking (moral hazard), thus provoking the very crises they are supposed to prevent. On the other hand, the (surprisingly) fast recovery experienced after (most of) these crises may, perhaps, be attributed to the safety net provided by LOLR facilities, which may have dampened real effects by containing contagion. Currently, the need for, and the appropriate design of, a LOLR both at the national and international level is hotly debated. There are fierce controversies about how to handle crisis management. This book assembles a selection of the best available studies in this field, and illuminates both sides of the debate. After a substantial review of the literature, Part I Iooks back to the historical evolution of thought on the conduct of LOLR. Parts II and III review contemporary contributions to the debate. Part IV explores the international aspects of these issues. Overall, this Reader provides comprehensive and authoritative coverage of the contending views on how the authorities might respond to financial crises. It will appeal to a broad readership including financial and monetary economists, commentators on financial subjects, (central) bankers, financial regulators, and ministries of finance.

Product Description
Whenever one of the developing markets sneezes, the rest of the emerging markets in the world are likely to suffer from anything from the sniffles to pneumonia. When the connections among the countries is slim, this phenomenon has come to be known as financial contagion. This Research Foundation monograph provides an introduction to this fascinating subject-definitions of the term, instances of contagion in the 1990s, the theories that attempt to explain it, previous evidence from tests of the theories and problems with the testing procedures, and the results of new tests. Because the new research raises more questions than the answers, the monograph closes with a discussion of where to go from here.

Financial Crisis, Contagion, and Containment: From Asia to Argentina
Padma Desai Manufacturer: Princeton University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0691113920 |
Book Description
This book provides a sweeping, up-to-date, and boldly critical account of the financial crises that rocked East Asia and other parts of the world beginning with the collapse of the Thai baht in 1997. Retracing the story of Asia's "Crisis Five"--Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, the Philippines, and Thailand--Padma Desai argues that the region's imprudently fast-paced opening to the free flow of capital was pushed by determined advocates, official and private, in the global economy's U.S.-led developed center. Turmoil ensued in these peripheral economies, the Russian ruble faltered, and Brazil was eventually hit. The inequitable center-periphery relationship also extended to the policy measures that the crisis-swept economies implemented under International Monetary Fund bailouts, which intensified the downturns induced by the panic-driven outflows of short-term capital.
Financial Crisis, Contagion, and Containment examines crisis origin and resolution in a comparative perspective by combing empirical evidence from the most robust economies to the least. Why is the U.S. relatively successful at weathering economic ups and downs? Why is Japan stuck in policy paralysis? Why is the European Central Bank unable to achieve both inflation control and stable growth? How can emerging markets avoid turbulence amid free-flowing speculative capital from private lenders of the developed center? Engaging and nontechnical yet deeply insightful, this book appears at a time when the continuing turmoil in Argentina has revived policy debates for avoiding and addressing financial crises in emerging market economies.

Contagion in Financial Markets
Friedrich L. Sell Manufacturer: Edward Elgar Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1840645644 |
Book Description
This book aims to integrate the notions of contagion in epidemiology and of contagion in financial market crises to discover why emerging markets are so susceptible to financial crises. The author first provides a brief introduction of the contagious spill-over of recent financial market crises and models the pattern of these crises. He finds that the contagion between crises in emerging markets, such as that of the crises in Russia and Brazil in 1998-1999, is explicable, despite the fact that at first sight they appear to have little in common. Finally, Professor Sell integrates these findings to outline a proposal for a `new international financial architecture'.
This groundbreaking book will be of interest to scholars of financial economics, emerging economies and international money and finance.

This book presents a selection of the papers given at this conference.

New Corporate Cultures That Motivate
Adolf Haasen , and Gordon F. Shea Manufacturer: Praeger Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1567206425 |
Book Description
This breakthrough analysis of several advanced, exceptionally productive, and motivating organizational cultures is based on interviews with employees--from shop floor workers to CEOs--to discover precisely what makes them so effective. These positive case studies, illuminated by the executive perspective in each situation, tell fascinating stories of how these exciting cultures were formed, developed, or evolved to meet the challenges created by the firms' growth and success. Haasen and Shea also examine the recent history of four negative examples of conventional organizations that have imploded, regressed, suffered from malaise, or been sidetracked by their executives. A new concept of employee ownership emerges from the studies, one that is not primarily financial in nature but instead revolves around the idea of joint responsibility for decisions and actions. That basis leads to more collaborative teamwork, less reliance on hierarchy, and a greater sense of involvement in key strategy formulation. Managers are transformed from out-of-touch "bosses" into important resources to their people. The work environment of these new corporate cultures is characterized by mutual respect and support. The result is a stimulating, "fun" place to work, which in turn leads to greater productivity and lower turnover costs.

Uncommon Sense About Organizations: Cases, Studies, and Field Observations
Geert Hofstede Manufacturer: Sage Publications, Inc ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0803953674 |
Book Description
"Geert Hofstede writes very clearly and engagingly. His interest in people is deep and genuine, and he enjoys the variety of their habits and motivations. His sympathy is usually with the underdogs in any situation, rather than those in authority, but he sees the humanity of both. His studies are carefully done. . . . His insights are nicely expressed. . . .The greatest value of Uncommon Sense About Organizations will probably be as a resource for management teaching, in its human behavioral aspects. --Systems Research "This is a worthwhile collection. . . . His work is notable for its international and cross-cultural approach. . . . Hence this book deserves a place on the bookshelves of serious students of organizations, particularly those with an international orientation." --Work, Employment, and Society "As the author takes us on an international journey, his writing covers a wide range of situations, from the shop floor, and the staff and management of multinational corporations, to the scene in a Swiss high school graduating class. The material, even when academic, holds the reader's interest because he writes about real events and people. . . . I enjoyed the international flavor of the cases and the freshness of the articles because the author revisits and analyzes the material, with the benefit of hindsight and continued scholarship. . . . I was impressed by the wide range of interests of the author." --Borje O. Saxberg, Graduate School of Business Administration, University of Washington Hofstede's lifetime of research into organizational behavior has yielded a considerable number of studies using a variety of methodologies. Uncommon Sense About Organizations assembles 17 of the author's superlative articles and case studies, grouping them within three main themes: the impact of jobs on people, power and control in organizations, and studies in training sessions. Hofstede further divides and examines these subjects in relation to their sizes, categorizing studies of the individual or small group as belonging to organizational psychology, for example, while attributing the study of a single, larger, and more complex organization to the discipline of organizational anthropology. The combination of the author's careful and informed scrutiny and his thoughtful juxtaposition of these topics reveals organizational realities that might not otherwise be discerned. Encompassing such wide-ranging disciplines as sociology, psychology and anthropology, Uncommon Sense About Organizations is a tour de force of behavioral science research.Books:
