Book Description
A revised edition of the best-selling Robert’s Rules in Plain English, which still stands as the most concise, most-user friendly guide to parliamentary procedure on the market today.
Customer Reviews:
Reference book.......2007-06-10
Great resource for anyone wanting to learn more about running meetings in an organizational setting. Seems to me lots of meeting attendees think they know how to make motions and take actions but in my experence most meeting attendees do not know the basic rules of order. I use this small easy to understand book monthly as a reference at my Chamber of Commerce. A must have if you serve as a member of any Board of Directors or formal meeting group.
It's a practical guide to Robert's Rules.......2007-03-12
This is a nice book for the money. It's easy to read. It has a good layout.
Roberts Rules made easy.......2005-10-24
I found the book as represented and easy to read and it has all the simple answers that you might need quickly. Reading the full Roberts Rules of Order revised can take time this makes it easy to pick out the simple explanation and answers. Nice to take to the meetings for quick reference.
Roberts Rules in Plain English.......2005-10-21
The book is a decent primer and is certainly more readable than Robert's original book. Of course the original and all of its editions remain an example of very incomprehensible and convoluted language even for its era. However, I have to handle large meetings of very strong-willed, intelligent people, so I found the "Plain English" book not very useful. I need to know the details and complexities of handling important meetings so that I make the right decisions. I will stick with the more sophisticated texts.
Robert's Rules in Plain English.......2005-09-16
Was very disappointed. I thought the book would have contained the entire book of Robert's Rules written in language easily understood by all who read it. The book I received was very brief in dealing with situations that arise during a meeting. It dealt with very few situations.
Product Description
Shows students how to draft legislation and rules in a wide variety of jurisdictions. The term "legislation," is broadly interpreted to include constitutional provisions, charters, statutes, and ordinances as enacted by referendum or a legislative body. This book is equally applicable to rules and rulemaking by federal, state, and local governmental agencies responsible for health, welfare, education, water and sewer, transportation, zoning, and planning.
Customer Reviews:
Too simplistic.......2002-09-20
This is another example of a person who has no experience drafting legislation presuming to tell the professionals who do that kind of writing how to perform their difficult task. Most such intruders into the field, including Martineau, base their recommendations on Plain Language principles. Martineau clearly reveals his lack of knowledge of statutory drafting and the havoc that is caused by mechanistically applying the allegedly universal but actually simplistic and counter-productive princples of Plain Language to this form of writing. If you are looking for useful advice about drafting, read something by a professional who has thought about the subject.
A strong author with practical advice........2002-05-02
The best reason to get this book is that the author has great credentials. He has drafted at the state and city level for over 30 years. That kind of experience, when combined with a commitment to plain language, makes for a valuable and authoritative text. And the book is, indeed, clearly written and thorough. The only drawback is the format--it's somewhat clunky, archaic, and slightly unprofessional in appearance. But if you need guidance on drafting rules and legislation, this is an excellent book that focuses on those skills.
Useful and direct.......2002-03-20
I found this book very useful. The writing is direct and the advise practical. The stucture of the book also makes it useful as a desktop reference. It is the closest thing to a "Strunk and White for Legislative Drafters".
I found two main flaws:
1. The cross-references are strangley inocorrect - the author keeps sending us to "see further" in the wrong place.
2. The sections referring to specific clauses (definitions, penal clauses, tax clauses, clauses creating an administrative entity etc.) are not substantial enough.
However, this is still a book worth owning and reading for anyone who deals with legislative drafting, even for those who (like myself) draft in a language other than English.

This book provides a one-stop resource on technology, innovation, and knowledge management. It gives you a tool for gaining short-term, case-specific insight and long-term, industry-wide understanding of the best technology management and learning policies and practices. The Strategic Management of Technological Learning explores a portfolio of case studies on technology-driven-but not exclusively high-tech-companies that have an overall long-term record of success and prosperity. Through in-depth interviews with industry practitioners, the author empirically identifies the presence of Strategic or Active Incrementalism. The following chart shows the studied firms, which operate at high risk and uncertainty, very dynamic, and technologically intensive business environments:

A Colleagues' Review of Dr. Carayannis' Book.......2001-02-03
Dr. Carayannis provides an in-depth exposition of the issues surrounding learning, strategic planning and organizational performance for technology-driven organizations. These issues are complex and not well understood in the literature. Nevertheless, Dr. Carayannis recommends that an alternative theory of the firm be developed to begin addressing the complexity of strategic planning in technology oriented firms. He provides the first step in this direction by juxtaposing various schools of decision-making, provides an overview of the various paradigms in decision-making, and details how culture, feedback, and learning facilitate decision-making. He then provides a plethora of empirical evidence from transport manufacturing, processing industries, and electric power generation facilities. At the end Dr. Carayannis integrates the theories with the empirical evidence into a very useful research framework. It is this framework that will allow future researchers to address a variety of hypotheses concerning the relationship among learning, strategic planning and organizational performance of technology-driven organizations. This provides an important contribution to the literature on the management of technological firms.
Leveraging knowledge through technology.......2000-11-03
I read with the greatest interest the new book of Dr. Carayannis on the Strategic Management of Technological Learning. In the fast changing pace of the 21st century economy, this book is an essential reference for all practitioners who face the challenges of creating meaningful learning and knowledge sharing initiatives in modern dynamic businesses. Full of practical examples and tools from companies that are known for having a reputation for successfully leveraging knowledge through technology, this book helps you develop a strategic framework to gain a sustainable competitive advantage based on continuous learning -- a "must read" for those who intend to grow their firm's core competencies.

Book Description
The aim of this book is to highlight a number of separate issues in the analysis of product innovation and the implications for firm behaviour. This is done by taking a close look at the semiconductor industry, where product innovation is undertaken frequently and the innovation cycles unfold in very short periods of time. There are three main themes; the first theme concerns the evolution of market share patterns, the time profile of which has shown a striking regularity and persistence over successive generations of products. A game theoretic model generates equilibrium results consistent with the basic facts observed. The second theme is about the relevance of the "learning by doing" concept in the production of semiconductors estimating the learning curve. The third theme addresses the relevance of trade policy in innovative industries. It is argued that protectionist trade policies have powerful implications for leadership product innovation.

Book Description
While theories on `learning organizations' and `knowledge-based companies' have recently emerged, little attention has yet been given either to the underlying structures of these developments, or to the link between these underlying structures and the resources available to manage them. Organizational Learning and Knowledge Technologies in a Dynamic Environment attempts to fill this gap. It thus presents practical and concrete ways for companies to be adaptable and flexible whilst operating effectively and efficiently. Underlying concepts and insights into flexible management and chaotic market behavior are translated into a pragmatic approach to knowledge management within companies, using the latest technology. Corporate knowledge is increasingly proving to be not only an important resource, but possibly unique in its sustainability. Managing knowledge as a resource, as well as managing learning as the process which creates that resource, can only be done using appropriate information technologies. The foundational concepts discussed emerge from such fields as neurobiology, cognitive sciences, physics, and organizational theory. These are applied to management and substantiated with examples. New developments in knowledge management, such as connectionist approaches, are outlined and illustrated with real cases. The author further describes an approach for developing knowledge networks in companies. The annex offers readers with an advanced interest in the matter an epistemological discussion on scientific methods for management research and touches in a broader sense on the measurability of management processes.

Book Description
This book investigates how individual firms in developing countries undertake technological learning and capability building (TCB) efforts and explains why some developing country firms are world-class and others struggle with these important processes.
The study concludes that it is internal competencies, such as the ability to manage strategic change and develop coherent systems that enable firms in developing countries to effectively navigate technological frontiers, the network of global suppliers and weak national innovation systems. In particular, the ability to strike a strategic balance between developing a diverse range of internal learning routines and managing boundary assets over which they have only partial control is found to be of importance.
The conceptual framework developed for this study - the TCB system approach - draws on a number of intellectual traditions, including organizational development, strategic management, innovation studies, development studies and evolutionary theory of the firm. Conclusions are drawn using this approach to perform a detailed cross-sectional analysis of technological learning in a sample of 26 telecommunication operating companies in Uganda, Ghana, Tanzania and South Africa.
By focusing on firms in the services sector, rather than in manufacturing, the study covers an area that is under-researched and identifies many distinctive features of the capability building process. It is also able to offer insights on how the majority of firms in developing countries should cope with the challenges of speed and complexity of technological change even when they are not aiming to generate radical innovations at the frontier.
Technological Learning will be of great interest to a wide-ranging audience, including science and technology academics, scholars and policy makers in developing countries, telecommunications managers and executives, and organizational management scholars focusing on developing country issues.
