    Book Description

While supply chain management has risen to great prominence in recent year, there are hardly related developments in research methodologies. Yet, as supply chains cover more than one company, one central issue is how to collect and analyse data along the whole or relevant part of the supply chain. Within the 36 chapters 70 authors bring together a rich selection of theoretical and practical examples of how research methodologies are applied in supply chain management. The book contains papers on theoretical implications as well as papers on a range of key methods, such as modelling, surveys, case studies or action research. It will be of great interest to researchers in the area of supply chain management and logistics, but also to neighbouring fields, such as network management or global operations.

      Description:
Due to the increasing complexity in products and in the resulting enterprise processes, new concepts for process optimization are necessary. One innovative concept, resulting from the requirements of the automotive industry, is the method of an integrated product and process documentation. In order to evaluate the benefits of an inter-company use of this documentation approach a simulation-based decision support system using a modular modeling concept for intra- and inter-company process chains has been developed. This concept is based on the Supply Chain Operations Reference-model (SCOR-model). The developed concept allows the evaluation of different configurations of process chains with different sets of parameters describing realistic production and inventory processes. Focussed on supply chains with high variant and complex products within the automotive industry first scenarios have been built up and the benefits of this integrated documentation approach can be visualized. This approach is the future basis for optimization methods coming from control theory.

        Description:
This paper presents a multi-layer demand-responsive logistics control strategy for alleviating, effectively and efficiently, the bullwhip effect of a supply chain. Utilizing stochastic optimal control methodology, the proposed method estimates the time-varying demand-oriented logistics system states, which originate directly and indirectly downstream to the targeted member of a supply chain, and associate these estimated demands with estimates of different time-varying weights under the goal of systematically optimizing the logistical performance of chain members. In addition, an experimental design is conducted where the proposed method is evaluated with the two specified criteria. Numerical results indicate that the proposed method permits alleviating, to a great extent, the bullwhip effect in comparison with the existing logistics management strategies. Furthermore, the methodology presented in this study is expected to help address issues regarding the uncertainty and complexity of the distortion of demand-related information existing broadly among supply chain members for an efficient supply chain coordination.

            Book Description

The founders of our Republic envisioned education as providing for all citizens the necessary apprenticeship in the understanding and practice of democracy. To make democracy safe we must have universal schooling; to make schooling safe for education we must have democracy. But since the founding of our country the study and practice of democracy in our schools has weakened. We must return to the primary purpose of education and ensure that it is indeed for everyone. The Agenda for Education in a Democracy proposed by the authors is more than an effort to simply revitalize a faltering civics curriculum. It is about restoring a shared humanity to the educational process. It is about the need to make caring, compassion, freedom, dignity, and responsibility central to the mission of schooling. It is about placing power and responsibility—a concept more demanding of the individual than is accountability—in the hands of those who need and deserve it. It is about taking the idea of excellence seriously. It is about taking democracy seriously. It is about having real faith in real people to do what is right, just, and honorable.

            Product Description

In Political Agendas for Education: From the Religious Right to the Green Party, Third Edition, Joel Spring brings up-to-date his description and analysis of the current educational agendas of major political players and organizations. The focus of this edition is the 2004 presidential campaign and the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. Spring discusses the ideological perspective of each major political group and how its ideology is represented in No Child Left Behind: *The religious agenda of Republicans who identify themselves as compassionate conservatives; *The free market ideology of Republicans who consider themselves neoconservative Republicans; *The thinking of the New Democrats, who claim a major responsibility for passage of the No Child Left Behind Act and support its accountability requirements; and *The educational agendas and criticisms of No Child Left Behind offered by Ralph Nader's 2004 presidential campaign organization, the Green Party, the Rainbow Coalition, and the National Organization of Women. Political Agendas for Education: From the Religious Right to the Green Party, Third Edition is an essential text for courses dealing with the politics of education, foundations of education, educational leadership, and curriculum studies, and a must-read volume for educational scholars, professionals, policymakers, and all those concerned with the politics of education in the U.S. and its consequences for schools and society.

3 out of 5 stars An Insightful Overview of America's Political Stakeholders.......2007-07-18

Political Agendas for Education gave an informative, albeit biased view of the current political stakeholders in education. Spring began his book with a 40 year old George W. Bush drunk at a party, and swearing off drinking from then on. What did this have to do with education? If I wrote a book about education and began with the Monica Lewinsky debacle, would I be seen as an unbiased writer? I don't think that that would be the case.
While Spring gives legitimate views of the political parties (i.e. Conservative, Neo-conservative, New Democrats, etc.), it is clear from his comments that he does not agree with the conservative views.
As an educated reader my goal is to critically analyze all views in a given topic without any bias whatsoever. I wish that Spring could do just that:(

3 out of 5 stars Obvious author bias!.......2002-07-03

I had to read and review this book for a college class. While it is supposed to be a politically neutral book that discusses all viewpoints, I found it to be very biased toward a liberal viewpoint. Some parts are good, but others are too vague and shallow, due to the apparent bias of the author.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a must read.......1998-12-06

This book is a must read for anyone who ever wondered why public schools can never seem to make up their minds. Dr. Spring presents a balanced view of the agendas and motivations that various groups have for shaping the course of educational direction. No matter where you fall on the political spectrum, this book is informative and enlightening.

The revised and updated second edition of this cutting-edge collection brings together readings both classic and new on the theme of global environmental politics from a diversity of viewpoints and values orientations. In selections chosen for their authority and edited to preserve their integrity, Green Planet Blues speaks with many voices-from Garrett Hardin and Herman Daly to Tanvai Nagpal, Chico Mendes, and Gita Sen, and from the World Bank and the United Nations Development Programme to indigenous peoples of the Amazon. North-South relations combined with an emphasis on class, race, and gender are leitmotivs threaded throughout the selections. The paradigms of sustainable development, environmental security, and ecological justice are used to explicate topics ranging from climate change, population growth, deforestation, the ozone layer, acid rain, and toxic dumping to transboundary pollution and the global commons.

                      Book Description

The World Intellectual Property Organization aims to introduce a much ignored element of the contemporary structure of global governance to scholars of international political economy. The book discusses:

                      · How WIPO works, its antecedents and history
                      · The debates about the role and justification of intellectual property
                      · The role of WIPO within contemporary global politics.
                      · The key elements of its relations with the World Trade Organization,
                      · The Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights.

The analysis then examines the recent political economy of the organization and argues that far from being the neutral or technical agency that it often presents itself as, the WIPO is highly politicized and acts to socialize policy makers and civil servants into a specific view of intellectual property. However the recent proposal to establish a Development Agenda at the WIPO is an important development, and the book concludes by examining the problems which has promoted this agenda and suggesting that the politicization of the WIPO should be welcomed.

The World Intellectual Property Organization is a clear and accessible volume that will confirm the WIPO as one of the global institutions which any student of global governance must understand.

                      Book Description

The hypocrisy and lies behind the alleged humanitarian war waged by the United States and NATO are exposed in this anthology of carefully documented critiques of the Balkan conflict. Evidence is presented to conclude that divide-and-conquer tactics were used to stimulate war in Yugoslavia; critical essays examine the Hague Tribunal, the occupation of Kosovo, media deception, war crimes, and blatant NATO aggression. Contributors include Ramsey Clark, Slobodan Milosevic, and Michael Parenti.

1 out of 5 stars Apologists for genocide.......2005-07-09

Absolute nonsense from a passle of kooks and conspiracy theorists eager to pass on propaganda from genocidal sociopaths like Slobodan Milosevic. While the reactions of the "West" to the events of Yugoslavia's disintegration and the aggression of Serbia on its neighbors (and Croatia on Bosnia) were hardly exemplary, it is facile at best to argue that the U.S. and/or NATO had anyhting at all to gain from "stimulating" war in the region. Including "contributions" from Milosevic to make the case for these brain-dead theories is like quoting from "Mein Kampf" to prove that Hitler was a peace-loving individual. Read this only if you are looking for evidence that there are still people with little enough regard for the truth and morality that they would act as apologists for some of the most evil people of recent history. This work defies all credibility and is both morally and intellectually bankrupt.
