Long, verbose, time consuming and WORTH EVERY BIT OF IT!

Was an assigned text for an upper level university Management course. Excellent choice. The content made sense, was well written/easy to read, and continually built on earlier chapters.

It's still on my shelf as a reference I refer to often in my business. Wouldn't be without it!

It is straightforward book. Each chapter has some case study, which is real application of Quality management. I would strongly recommend for students as well as managers to read this book. It has different point of views from various Philosophers like Dr. Deming, Dr. Juran, Crosby and other well-known persons.

5 out of 5 stars I highly recommend this textbook .......2005-07-27

I used an older edition of this book in preparing for the ASQ Certified Quality Manager Exam. It is a great reference.

1 out of 5 stars Painfully, horrible classroom textbook.......2007-05-01

I purchased this book as a requirement for my university's MBA program. My goodness, what a nightmare of a book!! It has no index, is painfully long and just a horrible read. In fact, my class ended up using an online tool using the same ideas as those incorporated in Goldratt's Theory of Constraints and Thinking. When I tried to match up the theories and lessons of those learned online - it was difficult to understand from this two volume book set because it is so poorly presented.

1 out of 5 stars Managing Operations: A Focus on Excellence.......2006-03-03

This is a terribly cumbersome book to use. It is in 2 volumes. It is full of "supplements" that should have been put into a separate study guide. There is no index at the back of the book, so it is not easy to use as a shelf reference. The book was not done with high-quality publishing software, but rather just a low-end word processors. Consequently, figures and format are not appealing to the eye. And finally, and most important, it is overloaded with Goldratt's Theory of Constraints and Thinking processes, to the point of making the user think that there is nothing more to OM than TOC.

        Book Description

"Managing for Excellence is above all usable. Its helpful, down-to-earth advice can transform any leader from merely good to positively outstanding. These are the ideas managers can not only admire but act on as well-the highest compliment for a manager's guidebook." -Rosabeth Moss Kanter Author of The Change Masters

The bestseller that revolutionized management's vision of itself

In the mid-1980s, the notion that the most successful managers are no longer heroic, but share power and responsibility, was so revolutionary that it bordered on heresy. But the ideas championed by David Bradford and Allan Cohen in Managing for Excellence proved so effective that, virtually overnight, thousands of skeptical upper-level managers became true believers.

Managing for Excellence isn't just for CEOs, presidents, and veeps-the battle-tested methods laid out in this book help middle managers turn the strategic designs of upper management into reality. Bradford and Cohen reveal how great managers succeed by bringing out the best in their employees. They show managers how to:
        * Develop a cohesive team that jointly owns critical management issues
        * Deal with difficult problems head-on and make core decisions through consensus
        * Encourage healthy competition against objective standards of excellence
        * Be decisive leaders while encouraging input from team members
        * Manage daily procedures, adapt to change, and maintain a vision of the future simultaneously

        5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ.......2007-06-10

This book is a must read for students pursuing careers in Management, Leadership, or any related field. While the book is written with Middle Managers in mind, the writers have paved the way for self-development as well. Bradford and Cohen articulate the differences between three management styles all the while keeping the contemporary organization in mind. Readers will find themselves engrossed as the authors clearly deliniate between these three styles through description and the provision of a plethora of examples. If you plan on pursuing a career in management do yourself a favor and pick this book up but most importantly read it.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding read for middle managers.......1998-02-15

This is a great book for people who've recently been promoted to a middle management position and/or who are struggling to get the most from their team. Unlike most management books, which always seem to be aimed at the CEO, this one targets the 2nd or 3rd level manager, who's trying to motivate a team of 25-60. Although it's based on a pretty simple concept (articulate a clear vision, let employees to share in the mgmt responsibility, and then focus your energies on developing their abilities to do so), it helped me a lot in realizing that by trying to coordinate and stay in control of everything going on in my group, I was actually stifling the creativity and motivation of my employees. By turning over more of the day-to-day responsibility to them, and focusing my energies on the broader vision, we'll all be a lot more successful. This book is loaded with a lot of great examples that helped me see that.

          Book Description

II exposure to health and safety hazards in the workplace can be prevented. But only if the systems for initiating and monitoring controls are as carefully planned and implemented as the controls themselves. For proof of this, look no further than the participants in OSHA's Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP). Meeting the VPP requirements and following guidance provided by OSHA's onsite evaluations, VPP members maintain comprehensive, practical, verifiable safety systems involving employees and managers at all levels. The results have been spectacular—members routinely report lost time injury rates of 50 to 80 percent below industry averages. These remarkable voluntary programs were developed and managed by Margaret Richardson for OSHA. Now Richardson uses her experience with VPP Star sites and clients pursuing excellence to take you beyond the VPP requirements to levels achieved by the best of the best. is the first how-to guide to establishing effective management systems for achieving excellence in worker protection from workplace hazards-a chance to benchmark the industry leaders from the comfort of your favorite chair. is based on OSHA guidelines for managing worker safety and health and on Richardson's considerable hands-on experience with OSHA and Department of Energy Star sites, as well as client worksites in some of the largest firms in the world. Step-by-step, the book shows you how to Achieve a closed safety management loop with clearly established policies, goals, objectives, assignments, and accountability procedures Ensure total worker involvement by fostering a "safety culture" where employees feel ownership of the safety/health program Identify and control hazards with a "hazard inventory" plus other reports, investigation techniques, and analyses to pinpoint all kinds of problems—even those that often elude controls Train all levels of employees, from workers and supervisors to middle and top managers, to understand their crucial roles in the program Better safety management up-front means fewer on-site accidens and work-related illnesses plus improved employee morale, more efficient operations, and better public relations. If you are responsible for creating, teaching, managing, or monitoring sophisticated safety systems, or if you serve on a safety committee overseeing safety systems, provides the information you need to do the job right.
