2 out of 5 stars This is not what I wanted.......2007-02-19

I thought I was ordering the text for my micro econ course.. When I actually received the it, it was a condensed version of the text "To accompany the text," that's weak sauce. It's more than likely that it was my fault for not noticing, but it should be more obvious that this is not the text.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-01-16

I recieved the book a couple days after I ordered it and it was in perfect condition! I am very happy with my purchase!!!

5 out of 5 stars Fast service..........2007-01-03

3 out of 5 stars Book is ok.......2004-05-07

This book is ok. It is very wordy, and again, economics is not like chemistry or calculus. At last, it is a social science. It takes about 4 pages of reading to get one useful concept. I just hope other econ classes won't use books as wordy as this one.

      Book Description

Following German reunification in 1990, East Germany's centrally planned economy was abolished and replaced by West Germany's social market economy. Western Germany has since provided vast financial support to aid the transformation, and enable eastern Germany to catch-up with western Germany's productivity and living standards. This book evaluates the main events and their outcomes since mid-1990 and the associated policy issues. The authors assess the medium to long term growth prospects of eastern Germany and the wider implications for western Germany and Europe. The Economics of German Unification analyses the economic process of assimilating eastern Germany into the institutions and performance levels of western Germany. It includes original research as well as providing an overview of existing literature. Among the topics discussed are: - the relative backwardness of East Germany's economy - the impact of monetary and economic integration - restructuring and privatization - labor market and industrial policy, including an analysis of wage restraint and cost reduction - the prospects for eastern Germany catching-up economically with western Germany - the repercussions for German competitiveness nationally and within the wider European context This book will be welcomed by academics, researchers and undergraduates interested in the economics of transition, comparative economic systems, political economy and the European business environment.

      4 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Introduction.......2002-01-27

A must buy for the personal library of any future economics major. While most economics textbooks are dubbed as "dry" and "incomprehensible," this text fully acquaints the reader with fundamental economic principles in English that is clear and simple to understand, all the while maintaining the importance of the concepts. Despite the fact that McEachern does not explore (in any depth) the complex mathematical facet of economics, he covers well the basic theories of supply and demand, the market system, and the fundamental principles of both micro and macro economics. The graphs and other visual displays are clear and can be followed by anyone with a firm background in basic algebra.

Even though some very important concepts are simply "grazed" at the mere tip of the iceberg, this nonetheless functions relatively well with the book's overall intent to provide the reader with a firm knowledge of basic concepts. While this particular text wouldn't be used in the curriculum for an advanced seminar in economics, it would perform well as the "lay terms" manual for students that can't make heads or tails of the algorithms and complex functions and language of their college text.

All in all, McEachern's ECONOMICS: A CONTEMPORARY INTRODUCTION is a must-have for any and all future business, political science, and certainly economics majors.

                Book Description

A funny, provocative, and knowledgeable book about cursing and swearing, Blue Streak includes chapters on political correctness and on foul-ups in the workplace and in the courts caused by language regulations. It explores the tendency of men to swear more than women, the history and implications of some of the more common swear words, and obscenity in social, personal, and even theological conversation and literature.

In this volume you will find a fascinating and hilarious explanation of what "f--- you" actually means. (It turns out to be a strange little piece of syntax.) You will tour Hell as a piece of real estate. And you will learn why God would probably rather have us swear than not. The writing is playful and sophisticated, and it takes Blue Streak far beyond mere naughtiness and into the realm of literature.

                4 out of 5 stars A romp through ribaldry.......2003-04-27

Dooling asks why we, particularly men, swear. He searches through history and psychology, sometimes successfully, for the roots of expletives and why we use them. He also considers the reactions to such outbursts and their justification. We are trained as children to eschew "bad" words, but males tend to overcome that brainwashing and use profanity under a wide range of circumstances. Swearing is a near universal and must be contemplated in that setting. Recognizing that fact, he argues, could provide a seawall against the tsunami of "harassment" litigation pending in the courts.

If profanity, which Dooling provides almost to saturation, has a natural basis, then the laws covering workplace expression are irrational and doomed to failure. Worse, they seem to be having more negative impact on lives than on improving workplace conditions. Worse still, is the potential for all this legal [and social] activity leading to thought control? That ultimate question is Dooling's purpose in this rather impudent illustration. He sees the application of civil rights legislation of the 1960s has led along unanticipated paths. Civil rights, originally intended to protect voting and job rights, now extends into the realm of "feelings." Overt discrimination has been replaced by legislated politeness. Dooling wants to curtail the highly questionable practices resulting from vague definitions and decisions. This collection of essays boldly confronts us with past practices. We need to recognize what has occurred and reverse the process. It's not a question of manners, but of reality.

The illogical roots of "political correctness" are now being exposed by many good studies. This one happens to be one of the more senses-assaulting ones, but is no less valuable for that. Dooling's position as a lawyer provides a solid foundation for his arguments, and his delightful style will amuse any but the defiant reader. The examples he offers in support of his case should be noted carefully, they are being joined by others. There will be more until the populace awakens to the threat. Heed Dooling's call for your attention and follow his lead. He's gaining company in other areas - Gross and Levitt's "Higher Superstition" is another defence against the assaults on our liberties. Book Description

The Woman's Workplace Survival Guide is the kind of book you read and wonder where it was hiding when you started your career. In it you will find advice on how to deal with everyday workplace issues that could otherwise turn into catastrophic events.

Both men and women deal with the topics discussed in this book, but women seem to experience them more intensely. Women, more than men, tend to have unrealistic expectations, say "yes" when they mean "no," take criticism personally, let conflicts escalate into major battles, and fail to ask for what they want in the workplace.

The first section, "Surviving Coworkers," offers profiles of typical problem people in the workplace—prima donnas, passive-aggressive coworkers, gossips, arrogant people, complainers, whiners, cynics, and bullies to name just a few.

The second section, "Surviving Bosses," describes legal issues women face that involve employers and bosses. The goal is to get what you want by diplomatic means. If you want to negotiate a work/life balance arrangement, for example, don't emphasize how such an arrangement will benefit you. Talk about how it will benefit the company.

The third section, "Surviving Yourself," is for women to reflect on the behaviors, beliefs, and attitudes that might be keeping them from fulfilling their potential. It can be difficult to step back and examine why we are unhappy in our careers, but no one gets what they want by standing in place.

The last section, "Your Ladder to Success," is devoted to self-improvement. After reflecting on where you come from, it's time to make a plan to go somewhere. This section will help you determine what you want out of your career and how you can get it.

Each of the short 42 chapters is divided into two parts: the first part outlines the problem, while the second part offers solutions.

5 out of 5 stars The Woman's Workplace Survival Guide.......2007-07-16

The Woman's Workplace Survival Guide is the ultimate guide for women about the business world and how to be successful in any profession. This book contains three helpful sections: Surviving Coworkers, Surviving Bosses, and Surviving Yourself. Each of these sections explores the realities of a number of situations and looks at what women can do to adjust and thrive even in these difficult moments.

The first section, Surviving Coworkers, takes a candid look at office personalities and how to reduce or limit the effect of these individuals on your work and your sanity. The second section, Surviving Bosses, looks at important issues such as dealing with common discriminatory situations such as the old boy network, pregnancy discrimination, and equal pay for equal work. The third section, however, probably contains the most important information in this whole book, Surviving Yourself. This section prompts women to take a closer look at ourselves. Often, we are the ones limiting ourselves, taking on too much, and expecting perfection in an imperfect world. By looking at these issues, we start to understand what we really want from ourselves, from our peers, and from our careers.

The Woman's Workplace Survival Guide is an organized well written book that details everything a woman needs to know to be successful in the workplace, including the things that we'd rather ignore or blame on someone else. Not only does the author have a straightforward, no bull, method of presenting this material but shares this information in an often humorous always inspiring way. In short, this is a book that entertains and inspires while it teaches us how to be successful.

5 out of 5 stars The Woman's Workplace Survival Guide.......2005-07-02

The Woman's Workplace Survival Guide is highly recommended for those starting out in the workplace and for professionals who have been around for a while. This information packed publication offers tips and solutions on how to deal with various situations that arise daily in our workplaces. Written in a format easy to understand, we can all learn from this book. *****

                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent read!.......2005-06-24

This is an excellent, easy-to-read manual for any woman navigating through the workplace. Ms. Kaip writes in a succinct fashion on a variety of topics, infusing humor and personal anecdotes throughout. This would make a great graduation gift for those entering the workforce for the first time.

5 out of 5 stars Is Work a Four Letter Word? It Doesn't Have to Be!.......2005-06-03

"On the most basic level, you give your employers 40 hours a week, and the employer gives you a paycheck. But on a deeper level, you give them your personality, character, skills, knowledge, ideas, trust, and loyalty. In return, employers and coworkers give you a sense of belonging, security, personal and professional development, opportunities, and support." When I read that I thought, "WOW! Is that ever right on!"

Author Sarah Kaip certainly knew what she was talking about when she put this book together. Her humor and witty style make reading this guide a pleasure. I have been in the workforce for over thirty years and have seen most of the issues first hand. I have been on both sides of some of the issues, and I sure wish this book had been around sooner.

The information and advice in The Woman's Workplace Survival Guide doesn't just apply to women, or office jobs, but to anyone in the workforce in any position. I have worked in plywood mills, retail stores, television stations, and corporate offices, and the insights and solutions contained in this book cover most of the situations I have found myself in.

I highly recommend this book, it should be required reading curriculum for high school and college students looking to enter the workforce. An excellent book for use in job councils and in rehabilitating displaced workers.

5 out of 5 stars As good as career advice gets.......2005-06-01

Even your mother doesn't give advice like this. I wish someone had told me what this author writes when I first started my career. I identified with many of the problems presented in this book. The examples given seemed like scenarios I lived through myself. Her no-nonsense approach to dealing with coworkers cuts through a lot of the office politics and just plain silliness workers endure each day. She also offers several tips on how to get what you want from your boss without making him or her feel threatened.

Perhaps the best parts of the book are the last two sections on "Surviving Yourself" and "Your Ladder to Success." Many women are their own worst enemies. Fear, doubt, self-esteem problems, and lack of know-how keep women at the bottom of the corporate ladder. The ladder part tells women how to get started in their climb to the top. I highly recommend this book.
