Customer Reviews:
Not very good actually .......2007-06-11
The book presents a few ideas and techniques from the field of psychology (ie critical thinking) but , because its an introduction, does not go into any real depth. It leave the reader feeling a bit cheated really. Anyone who's really serious can get more knowledge by picking up a few college level text books in psychology and skip this introduction.
The best NLP Introduction .......2007-05-24
I consider myself a dabbler in NLP and have read several books on the topic. Perhaps, "attempted to read" might be a more accurate depiction. I found the works by Bandler and Grinder and the Andreas's very difficult to get through. At the other end of the spectrum, there are other works on NLP or NLP-related techniques that are quite readable but seem geared towards those lacking all self-esteem. This book by O'Connor and Seymour is an easy-to-read, logical, and objective overview of NLP without the claims of life-altering benefits.
For those interested in using NLP to improve communication skills and learn more about how our minds work, this book is the place to start.
Magnificent.......2005-12-29
Informative, Logically sequenced book. I loved it. I wished if it has more illustrations, styling design, and format. It would have made it even more appealling.
Outstanding.......2005-09-05
I very much wanted to get into this little known science of NLP, brainchild of Richard Bandler and John Grinder, for some time. After careful examination of similar books I chose this one after reading some of the page excerpts.
Boy am I glad I did!! This book lays a framework and gives the fundamentals to this awesome science, and does so with such grace and ease that it is mesmerising. It simply and eloquently explains how you can use your brain to it's fullest potential and how to use your senses to design ways to get what you've always wanted.
NLP - Neuro Linguistic Programming (don't be turned off by the fancy title) is simply a way of life to help you succeed. It is the language used by winners - the science and art of NLP was invented by studying what successful people do differently to everyone else; how their mindsets allowed them to succeed where others fail.
It's little wonder that this book has got 5 stars from practically everyone who has bought it. It changed my life, and if you are looking for ways to get where you want to be in life then go for it.
Great intro.......2005-09-01
This book takes you right to the core without success stories and other stuffings. Info-packed as it is, it brings you into NLP quick and effortless, describing the concepts in a clear and consistent manner. Recommended reading for all NLP starters.
Book Description
1913. A movement for adult education is sweeping over the nation today; and the most spectacular force in that movement in Dale Carnegie, a man who has listened to and criticized more talks by adults than has any other man in captivity. According to a recent cartoon by "Believe-It-Or-Not" Ripley, he has criticized 150,000 speeches. If that grand total does not impress you, remember that it means one talk for almost every day that has passed since Columbus discovered America. Or, to put it in other words, if all the men who have spoken before him had used only three minutes and had appeared before him in succession, it would have taken a solid year, listening day and night, to hear them all.
Customer Reviews:
This is a total ripoff. This is NOT THE DALE CARNEGIE. .......2007-07-20
I have a real hardback copy of Dale's book by the same title. Nothing on this CD comes from Dale's book. The title's of the chapters are all different, the forward totally different.
This is a ripoff.
And, the material certainly does not compare with the real Dale Carnegie books.
Book Description
NLP describes in simple terms what these people do differently and enables you to learn these patterns of excellence.

Thumbs up.......2006-07-03
For beginners, it's a good resource. Combine with Kenricks work and you have a winner
Basic strategies.......2006-03-18
This is a reveiw of basic strategies for behavioral pattern changes ,well worth investigating,if you are interesred in rapid transformation in behaviors.
Good for insomnia.......2005-10-24
Though some of the material is useful, I found these tapes to be long and boring. The authors read the text like a funeral procession. I would much rather recommend any of Anthony Robbins work - which always has some NLP, presented in a passionate, immediately useful way.
Incredible.......2004-06-29
How do people communicate? When I say I'm "frustrated" - in a particular context, HOW do YOU understand the exact shading of the word? Of course, you understand (if not colorblind) when I say "Robin's Egg Blue". So what do I mean when I say, "I'm feeling satisified"?
How do we learn from birth to use WORDS to express THOUGHTS?

How do we learn from birth to use WORDS to express THOUGHTS?
Remember when drunken Aunt Mary once embarassed you at a family gathering (which you've avoided all your life now...), stating you were always destined to be fat like your mother? Are you fat, or still fearful of it today?
How about when Freddy, in the 2nd grade, made some stupid but biting remark about you that even today you remember vividly and you STILL hate dodgeball?
What is the power of words, indirect and direct, that affect us, years afterwards? And what about the power of the words we choose today? Can they make us healthier, more attractive, happier? Can we really find that good mate, if we undertsand ourselves first?
It's science, you know. And you can easily understand it, and understand what you need to do to improve your communications and your relationships. This tape set is priceless...absolutely invaluable. It's suitable for all groups - all ages. Share it with your lover, your friends, your family.
This book is so powerful, I gave separate copies to my children and my spouse. I've gifted several friends as well.
My advice: Read SLOWLY. Savor each sentence. Work through the simple exercises in the book. Take your time and let this book come in it's own time, perhaps over a period of weeks. I read as few as 2 or 3 pararaphs a day, and it was very powerful. Somehow I KNEW what was here...but no one had ever put it in such clearly defined terms.
Also, get a companion audiobook: An Introduction to NLP Neuro-Linguistic Programming : Psychological Skills for Understanding and Influencing People [AUDIOBOOK] by Joseph O'Connor.
Priceless information that tells you HOW to decide for yourself. It's science, you know. Customer Reviews:
Not a lot of NLP material........2002-09-17
I thought this book would have more information on how to use NLP for enhancing leadership qualities. Most of what I found was just practical tips on what makes a leader and different leadership styles.
The questions posed throughout the chapters mostly ask you to think of qualities you like in different leaders and why you consider that person a leader.
If you're looking for pure NLP tips, I would suggest the book "NLP at Work". Otherwise, I would suggest skipping this book, unless you are unsure of "what makes a good leader".
Not really NLP.......2002-06-27
I bought the cassette version of this book and found it very light in NLP content - almost none at all. I did not get a lot out of this book.
Growing into a leader.......2000-11-14
The author applies his lucid thinking and writing, evident in his popular Introducing NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), to leadership in this book. He considers leadership as a journey and I like his analogy of a flock of birds. There is no one leader issuing orders all the time. Yet there is a larger intelligence that keeps the group together in very fluid formation. "The more the individuals use their own intelligence to the full for themselves, the smarter the group becomes." p.xi. O'Connor uses not only NLP, but also systems and complexity thinking in a very integrated way without technical jargons. You are invited to join this journey of growth as a leader. Start with reflections on your own goals and vision. The questions and exercises, "thought experiments"... throughout the book are excellent maps for readers to explore their own mind and values. Basic distinctions between leadership and authority, managing and leading, Roman law and common law, leaders or winners and losers' mentality, the use of values in contrast to extrinsic rewards in motivation... are illuminating. We are also helped to have a good understanding of trust and values, beliefs and assumptions. The extention of NLP's perceptual positions of self, other and objective view into a fourth perspective of context of a wider system and a fifth perspective of change through time shows the richness of systems thinking. Overall, this is an execllent guide for those willing to embark on this transforming journey and work through the exercises in acquiring both understanding and skills as a leader.
A wonderful way to have success.......2000-04-06
A book that reached a great goal: to give operating strategies about how to behave in the way leaders behave in the most natural way. The matter is that the strategies presented here work! I remained literally "glued" to this book from its start to his end; informations are not given in a scholastic way so that the reader must take it "as is"; personally i used some strategy presented here, in my everyday work and life, and, well, i must admit that it worked, at every level; at the very least, now i have a good way to communicate with other people.I believe that this is the best gift you may give to a good friend you really care of: why not starting with your best friend: yourself...?

A Complete Lemon.......2005-09-13
1. If you already know a little about presentation skills:
This is the only book I've ever seen where the author claims that people pay maximum attention in the **middle** of a presentation, and least attention at the beginning and the end.
The rest of the content is of a similar quality.
2. If you are a newcomer to presentation skills:
Based on numerous studies of such things as "primacy and recency" (what was said first, and what was said most recently), it is generally acknowledged that people tend to pay most attention at the beginning of a standard presentation, nearly as much at the end, and least in the middle.
According to this book, however, and with no hint of an explanation or supporting evidence, the exact opposite is true.
The rest of the content is of a similar quality.
It is possible, of course, that I have misunderstood the author's intended message - in which case I guess that simply demonstrates that the explanations in the book are even worse than I thought they are.
Tremendously interesting and pretty instructive book!.......2004-12-27
This is a practical, readable and most of all tremendously interesting book from the field of communication skills and inter-personal relationships. Though it is written for general public and intended to facilitate our professional and personal face-to-face relationships, it can be extremely helpful for `business people' and all those dealing with other individuals or groups, such as tourist guides and interpreters. In the latter case, they will find the book instructive on how to carry out presentations and manage their groups more effectively.
The book describes various skills of controlling the audience's attention, among other topics. You can learn how to recognize (in)visible signs of a breakdown of attention of your audience, to `read' the body language of people in your tour groups, and to generally win more attention while guiding. You'll find here how to pick up signals as to how you are coming across, retrieve the situation if somebody is resistant, choose the right words to get results in any situation, and more.
The text of this book is written in a charming way with a lot of examples from everyday life, given in special 'boxes'. Each chapter is followed by a small test, so the reader can check out his understanding of the subject. Even though you might think of yourself as a persuasive professional, there is always enough space for further improvements. James Borg's book is here to help you in that direction, and not only in your professional milieu.
This review refers to the paperback edition, published in October 2004. At the moment, it is available from Amazon.co.uk
