Book Description
Latin America's Economy provides a clear, comprehensive, and accessible overview of major economic issues facing Latin America today, including balance of payments problems, inflation, stabilization, poverty, inequality, and land reform. Each chapter centers on an economic problem, presenting major economic theories about the causes and possible solutions to the problem. The authors provide numerous cross-country examples to demonstrate how individual countries are affected by economic trends or policies. Chapters also include helpful summaries and ideas on what the future may hold.
Customer Reviews:
Good history, but outdated.......2003-02-18
This book serves as a good history of Latin America's economic history until the late 1980s. Of course, given its publication in 1995, not much more could be expected. However, if you are looking for a good understanding of Latin America's main eocnomies, it is not sufficient, since the changes that most countries have faced in the 1990s and early 2000s are dramatic. For example, there is very little in this book dealing with privatization (the wave that hit the region in the early 1990s), or even the control of inflation and the (limited) opening of markets to international trade.
Given all that has happened since its publication, it is good history, but does not reflect the current reality.
Latin America's Economy.......2001-02-19
This book is probably one of the most widely used for classes on Latin American Economic Development. It is well-structured and combines a revision of the main historic events that had impacted the economic development of Latin America with alternative theoretical explanations. It gives special priority to topics such as inflation, debt crisis and poverty and inequality that are crucial for the understanding of the Latin American economic evolution. Moreover, the text does not forget about the role played by the interaction between politics and economics. In this sense, the chapter on populism is remarkable. However, many of the statistical tables are outdated and in my modest opinion, a future revision of the book should include a chapter on the neoliberal reforms and their consequences.

Osland is genius.......2006-06-04
I got this book after attending her EMBA class at Sabanci University. She is truly one of the 'all stars' in the field. She has the know-how and the right attitude. If you have a chance to attend to her course do it; if not get the book. Very highly recommended.
Well-grounded OB course basics.......2003-04-02
"The organizational behavior reader" contains twenty chapters, each with two or three readings by recognized academic experts, usually adapted from the original source, e.g., Harvard Business Review. Chapters begin with the psychological contract (1), theories of managing people (2), individual and organizational learning (3), individual and organizational motivation (4), ethics and values (5), personal growth and work stress (6), and later topics include managing diversity (12), leadership (13), decision making (15), performance appraisal (18), and managing change (20). The pantheon of authors features experts such as Henry Mintzberg, Jay Conger, Denise Rousseau, Ed Lawler, Peter Senge, Cary Cooper, Deborah Tannen, Geert Hofstede, Hank Sims, Victor Vroom, Jeffrey Pfeffer, Ray Miles, and Rosabeth Moss Kanter. There are numerous charts, diagrams, graphs and models. Anecdotes and examples are plentiful. Self-assessments are rare. Few of the readings offer empirical data; the emphasis is on mental models, images, and concepts.
Professors of organizational behavior, looking for readings rather than integrated text, exercises, and cases, as well as a less expensive alternative to traditional college textbooks, will find this book appealing. These authors are, in general, engaging and highly readable. Chapters can be assigned in an order or avoided altogether to please the teacher's preferences. The breadth of topics, the currency of the treatments, and the expertise of the authors provide a solid foundation for the primary college OB course. Graduate students in need of less text structure and faculty in need of less ancillary materials will find the most benefit.
The book is rooted in social psychology and emphasizes perception, learning, thinking, images and personality, e.g., interpersonal communication, attribution, creativity. There is less on the `behavior' side of organizational behavior. Several authors use the device of posing `myths' to contrast with the author's learned, alternative state (`fact'), and sometimes the myths read more like `conventional wisdom' or the author's own attempt to make his or her point more vivid by presenting a myth that exists only in the minds of a few people. For business school students, this reader is more about organizations and people than about business. Business faculty and courses adopting this book will likely want and need to provide a management context.
An Excellent Book!.......2000-04-07

Book Description
Includes Original Essays & Letters
"The more evolved and psychologically healthy people get, the more will enlightened management policy be necessary in order to survive in competition and the more handicapped will be an enterprise with an authoritarian policy."-Abraham Maslow
In a world in which each new day brings a new management theory or strategic proposition, the timeless ideas of Abraham Maslow resonate with unimpeachable insight and clarity. Dr. Maslow, the pioneer behind elemental concepts including the hierarchy of needs and the human search for self-actualization, innately understood that the goals and passions that so impact humans in their everyday life could be just as applicable-and his own findings just as valuable-in the work environment.
The Maslow Business Reader collects Maslow's essays and letters for his many devoted adherents, and introduces his published and unpublished works to readers unfamiliar with Maslow's management breakthroughs. From recognizing and warning against management's natural progression to mechanize the human organization to brilliant discussions of human motivation, Dr. Maslow never fails to instantly recognize the heart and soul of each matter and provide direct, across-the-board solutions.
Abraham Maslow's contributions to behavioral science shine on every page. In notes and articles, as well as personal letters to icons B. F. Skinner, John D. Rockefeller II, and others, The Maslow Business Reader provides his outlook on:
* Management and leadership issues such as customer loyalty, entrepreneurship, and the importance of communication
* Ways to build a work environment conducive to creativity, innovation, and maximized individual contributions
* Techniques for finding comfort in change and ambiguity, and using them to spur creativity and innovation
Amid today's impressive technological innovations, business leaders sometimes forget that work is-at its core-a fundamental human endeavor. The Maslow Business Reader reminds us of Dr. Abraham Maslow's towering contribution to the understanding of human behavior and motivation, and how his efforts can lead to a greater understanding of the twenty-first-century workplace-and the workers who call it home.
An important analysis of workplace motivation-from the twentieth century's most influential behavioral expert
Abraham Maslow is renowned-and rightfully so-for his pioneering work on the hierarchy of needs and the human drive for self-actualization. As today's worker increasingly equates professional success with personal satisfaction and fulfillment, Dr. Maslow's words and ideas have become recognized for their wisdom and prescience on performance improvement and management/employee relationships.
The Maslow Business Reader collects Abraham Maslow's most instructive, intuitive thoughts and essays into one important volume. Assembled from the wealth of behavioral research and analysis Dr. Maslow left upon his death in 1970, the enclosed selections reveal a man comfortable with his position in history, tireless in his efforts to better understand what truly makes humans strive to reach their potential, and gifted in his ability to translate the most profound concepts and realities into entertaining, thought-provoking prose.
Abraham Maslow is still regarded as the modern world's most articulate, insightful authority on human behavior and motivation. Discover his beliefs and conclusions on worker drives and motivations-as applicable today as when they were first written-in The Maslow Business Reader.
Customer Reviews:
Heirarchy of Needs is the value in the book.......2002-01-27
The key element of Abraham Maslow's work, especially as it applies to the business world is that while organizations and economies change, people and psychology remain relatively constant. Mr. Maslow's work was about his desire to better understand what truly makes humans strive to reach their potential.
Mr. Maslow wasn't a business specialist; he was a psychologist and revolutionized behavioral sciences with seminal work on the "hierarchy of needs." Mr. Maslow's work began being preached to business students in the early 1960's through Douglas McGregor's work.
This book is a collection of published and unpublished articles and thoughts by Mr. Maslow, edited by Deborah Stevens.
This book provides insights from Maslow on fostering entrepreneurship, enhancing creativity in the workplace and maximizing the organizational effectiveness of individual workers through self-actualized work.
If you are looking for a good business book GO ELSEWHERE but if you want to learn about the hierarchy of needs or Abraham Maslow this book may be the book for you.
As a general rating I give the book 3 stars. Why? Because, outside of the basic framework on the hierarchy of needs and the evolution of man within it I found the book boring and I consistently found myself searching for groundbreaking or extremely applicable comments in various sections to the realm of business. Yes, business is about creativity and innovation (even more so in today's information age) but other books provide more insight into those areas. Innovator's Dilemma by Clayton M. Christensen is such a book.
Don't get me wrong, if you have never read Maslow you need to as it is REQUIRED READING at all the top MBA programs and truly is essential in understanding business and managing a business. Business is about people and understanding what makes them tick. However, as it pertains to reading material I found myself searching for great commentary and not getting much. I like to read a book and find myself completely absorbed by it reading 50-60 pages at a time (with this book I could never do it and I love reading heady stuff.) I read primarily business books, even some economic philosophy stuff, which is deep stuff, but it was far more thought provoking than this book.

Book Description
Over the past two decades, the topic of trust moved from bit player to center stage in organizational theory and research. Whereas previously it often had been treated as a mediating variable in empirical studies - a variable of secondary interest, at best - trust emerged in the 1990s as a subject deemed important and worthy of study in its own right. Despite the importance of the topic, to date no single volume currently exists that provides the motivated reader with a sound introduction to, and reasonable overview of, this rapidly growing, widely dispersed, multi-disciplinary literature. Indeed, some of the most influential, foundational pieces remain scattered in obscure journals or books, some of which are not easily found or, in some instances, no longer even in print. Thus the individual scholar hoping to come up to speed with this literature currently had nowhere to turn. This reader provides trust scholars and researchers with a handy reference volume, a broad guide for graduate students hoping to understand and possibly contribute to this significant and still-growing literature, and a resource for teachers at the undergraduate level of undergraduate anthropology, economics, political science, psychology, organizational sciences, and sociology courses.

The Jossey-Bass Reader on Educational Leadership (Jossey-Bass Teacher)
ASIN: 0198781814 |
Book Description
What is leadership? Are leaders made or born? Are the characteristics and challenges of leadership the same across time and cultures? Do leaders 'pull' or are they 'pushed'? Are leaders driven by needs that may be dysfunctional to the organizations they lead? Do women leaders behave differently from men? Should we look for models of business and organizational leadership in military organizations? These are all just some of the questions posed in this Reader which includes key statements from classical philosophy (Plato, Sun Tzu, Machiavelli) through to modern management writers (Barnard, Kets de Vries, Fiedler, Rosener). The collection will be invaluable to students and managers taking a range of courses in business management and leadership training. In his Introduction, Keith Grint both surveys current thinking on leadership and provides an excellent `road map' of the readings which are grouped under five headings: Classical, Traditional, Modern, Mythical, and Alternative.
