Book Description
At the time of his death in 1950, Joseph Schumpeter--one of the great economists of the first half of the 20th century--was working on his monumental History of Economic Analysis. A complete history of efforts to understand the subject of economics from ancient Greece to the present, this book is an important contribution to the history of ideas as well as to economics. Although never fully completed, it has gained recognition as a modern classic due to its broad scope and original examination of significant historical events. Complete with a new introduction by Mark Perlman, who outlines the structure of the book and puts Schumpeters work into current perspective, History of Economic Analysis remains a reflection of Schumpeters diverse interests in history, philosophy, sociology, and psychology. Major topics include the techniques of economic analysis, contemporaneous developments in other sciences, and the sociology of economics; economic writings from Plato and Aristotle up through the time of Adam Smith, including the medieval scholastics and natural-law philosophers; the work of Malthus, Mill, Ricardo, Marx, and the important European economists; the history, sociology, psychology, and economics of the period 1879-1914; and modern economic developments. Schumpeter perceived economics as a human science, and this lucid and insightful volume reflects that perception, creating a work that is of major importance to the history of economics.

Economics for adults.......2004-07-05
This book is one of the greats. Written by a master of economic theory, it reflects his learning and insight. But have no mistake, Schumpeter expects you to meet him half-way, so if you like to be spoon-fed and prefer pictures to words, this is not the book for you. The book needs to be read together with the original material: Schumpeter is not a substitute for, but a guide to the material he writes about. To criticise this book for not being light reading is simply to misunderstand this: to understand important thoughts requires some thinking and if you are not prepared to do the work, you shouldn't fool with this book. While Blaug's book is a decent solid survey, the only work which begins to rival Schumpeter's in erudition and incisiveness is Marx's Theories of Surplus-Value, which covers a narrower period. If you respect this book and *really* study it, the effort repays handsomely. Enjoy!
The beginnings of economic concepts in full detail.......2003-11-11
The objective of Schumpeter, one of the greatest economists of all times, is to portray in a very comprehensive detail, all the philosophical thinking that conduced to contemporary Economic Analisys, since the beginning of the ancient greek thought.
To me, that had a very great misconception about the works of Joseph Alois Schumpeter, this book was a revelation, be it for the immensity of his erudiction both as an historian, philosopher and economist, be it for the ingenuity in which he presents many new ideas and perspectives regarding economic analisys.
He is sometimes difficult to follow, not helped by the many and extensive footnotes he appends the book with, and by the many quotations he does in foreign languages, which he usually do not translate, be it in ancient Greek, Latin , French or German. Also , the book was unfinished in his lifetime and had to be edited by his wife, who was also deceased before the full completion of the giantic task. Even so, the book has some 1.300 pages and covers the full range of all the relevant economic thougth until the time of its publication.
A warning sign of caution must be addressed to the non-professional readers not not fully interested in the magnitude of such a scope, that is, of addressing the formative ideas of each and every important concept in economic analisys in a so complete way. This can be an overkill for you. But if you are interested in Medieval thought, the concepts exposed by , for instance, Saint Thomas and many others, this is a very good reading. Enjoy it
Complex and Sophisticated History of Economic Theory.......2000-11-18
The legendary History of Economic Analysis is without a doubt one of the greatest books of economic history ever written, but one should examine what kind of reading they're looking for before he or she embarks on this thousand page text. Schumpeter's unfinished history is divided into sections by ideology and time-period which is particularly useful but once you penetrate the well-organized table of contents, the writing becomes arcane and complex.
For a reader well-grounded in economic theory and history, I am sure that this is a bible; but for a curious reader interested in the history of economics (in a more political as opposed to theoretical perspective) this book may not be right. Highly footnoted and not very smooth writing, as well as obscure references to economists and theories results in a history that is very demanding of the reader. If you are looking for an economic history text that reads like From Dawn to Decadence you may be seriously disappointed, as I had been, but if you are a serious student of economics and are willing to spend the time to deliberate over Schumpeter's words then History of Economic Analysis is right for you.
THE masterpiece in history of economic thought.......2000-04-20
After the considerable success of his then only in germanpublished Little Sketch of Doctrines and Methods, and while he wasteaching at Harvard, Schumpeter started working on a book wich would cover the ground of Little Sketch an beyond. What began just as leisure would become THE masterpiece in History of Economic Thought. Schumpeter spent ten years in this colossal effort and unfortunately did not finish it before his death. Nevertheless, nowhere else you will find a book more powerful and more profound on this theme. By History of Economic Analysis Schumpeter means the history of efforts made in the pursuit of comprehending economic phenomena, from Antiquity to present; not a book on history of ideologies. Schumpeter places the authors in their times and contexts, and tries to understand how they proceeded in analysing economic reality. A must for anyone interested in economic theory, history and philosophy.

Office face-time may always play a critical role in certain corporate settings, but technology and globalization have combined to thrust "virtual meetings" into an increasingly important place on today's overall business stage. With once-rigid boundaries of time, geography, and even organization now rapidly disappearing, members of almost any workplace team can communicate and collaborate regardless of physical location. How to do so most effectively? Deborah L. Duarte, assistant professor at George Washington University, and Nancy Tennant Snyder, chief learning officer for Whirlpool Corporation, outline suggestions applicable to large and small organizations alike in Mastering Virtual Teams. Designed for those who work in--as well as lead--such teams, it is divided into sections that focus on their unique inherent complexities, their creation, and their operation. Real-life examples and the authors' experienced observations are complemented by an abundance of helpful checklists and practical exercises. --Howard Rothman

Pretty good, but do you really need to read a book to figure this out?.......2007-03-10
This is one of two textbooks assigned for me in my management of engineering teams class. Overall, I would say that this is a good book with a lot of useful information on managing virtual teams. However, I think that managing virtual teams is not too different from managing regular teams. Sure there are some technology issues you have to consider and different team norms, but the delta between managing virtual and conventional teams is really not that large. I do not think you need a book dedicated to explaining this delta. But overall this is a good read.
Another Human Resource Book with no Business case.......2001-11-03
I was disappointed by the lack of real world examples. Most of the examples were "human resource groups". Now, to be sure, there are many really fine checklists for managers included in this book. Although they are basic, most managers find them useful and thought provoking.
Unfortunately, as with most books on virtual teams, the authors have not focused on the critical operations which use virtual teaming: marketing, sales, program/project management. This book also neglects to leave the reader with a future focus --like: what is the new work and how will the businesses have to 'virtually' restructure or lose the "command and control" model of management.
Not great prose, but thorough coverage.......2001-03-27
Duarte and Synder provide thorough coverage of the tools and techniques required for effective use of virtual teams. The writing style is basic, here's-what-to-do stuff, offering 'x' critical success factors, abundant check lists, and tables comparing alternatives, such as video or electronic displays. From my experience, they are right on target for team leaders and team members.
Interspersed are jewels of wisdom. For example: communication and collaboration are the two most important factors in team success; sometimes it's better to wait until team members get to know one another as dependable and competent before initiating in-depth team building; trust depends on performance and competence, integrity, and concern for the well-being of others; information overload can slow down a team's decision-making process. I was pleased to find they documented that video conferencing requires a different skill set than running regular meetings.
I sometimes yearned for more real life stories and persuasive arguments, in other words, a less formulaic style. But that's my bias as a reader and not their intent.
Excellent overview of technology and techniques.......1999-08-03
The authors provide an excellent treatment of the problems associated with starting and maintaining virtual teams. An excellent concise presentation of working with differences in culture is presented. Many technology alternatives to facilitate group interaction and collaboration are also presented. The strengths and weaknesses of each technology are given for several different problem solving situations. I would recommend this book to anyone who must solve problems with others who are off site.
Great balance of high level strategy detailed operations........1999-05-21
The authors do a fantastic job of giving good high level strategy while giving useful detailed operational information.I have already found the content useful in my global virtual teaming.

This "Window" is Broken.......2006-04-30
A bad clone of a great model. In some cases, imitation is not just a form of flattery -- it's a diservice. If you want to learn Situational Leadership go to the source: The Management of Organizational Behavior or The Situational Leader by Paul Hersey. Better yet, avail yourself of one of his world famous workshops. He has a new book as well: Leadership - A Behavioral Science Approach. The Leadership Window omits the most critical elements of this behavioral model. This "window" is broken and distorted. Save your money and go for the real deal.
Should be on every leader?s bookshelf........2003-07-12
I have applied the Blanchard-Hersey Situational Leadership model for years with much success. The book I relied on, "Management of Organizational Behavior," was good but, being an MBA level text, was more theoretical than "how-to." The only other book I have seen on Situational Leadership is "Leadership and the One-Minute Manager," which was the exact opposite: Too simple.
This book combines the textbook's rigor with "One-Minute-style," easy to understand case studies to bring the model to life. Further, it is a how-to manual, which teaches you how to lead effectively using the model. You will learn: The development and intervention cycles, how to avoid being a "Leave `em alone, the zap `em" style manager, and how to properly empower a team, keeping control while simultaneously freeing people. You accomplish this by carefully modulating your relating and task-oriented behaviors in response to your report's motivationand skill. A proper match between employee readiness and a manager's approach generally leads to a more productive, harmonious work place.
This book is a classic. Along with the aforementioned text written by Paul Hersey and Ken Blachard (Of "One Minute Manager" fame), this book and Aubrey Daniels' behavioral modification how-to book, "Bringing the Best Out Of People" should be on every leader's bookshelf
A great "visual" for teaching Situational Leadership........1999-02-12
Leadership styles, communication styles, coaching for performance, and situational leadership are very important philsophies in our Telcom Industry. We use The Leader's Window as part of our leadership development courses and find it very practical, application's based, and an effective training tool that aligns with our training programs. Even though it is dated 1994, the concepts are timeless.
A great down-to-earth practitioner's guide.......1998-11-22
This book is great reading for anyone who is trying to make sense of their role as a leader. It first sets out 4 clear leadership styles, and then marries the styles simply to 4 different types of business situations. What I loved about this book was the simplicity, which helped me do two things: first thoughtfully apply the concepts to analyze my past experiences, and second, to use it effectively in my interactions with my teams.

Customer Reviews:
Good dialogues with the executive coach.......2006-01-13
To illustrate each of the seven coaching skills, there is a sample coaching session which shows how a coach would hone in and discuss each skill area. Very artfully done. The authors are all executive coaches and you can tell they are skilled practioners instead of academics.
Excellent Packaging.......2002-04-30
This is a very clear, sharp guide that addresses a common on-the-job problem -- although many can follow, few can lead, and even fewer know they can lead when they land the leadership position.
What impressed me most was the excellent packaging of the idea -- using the seven skills (with the acronym), the lists of questions, the step-by-step plans, the boxed tips, and the self assessments to help reinforce learning and retention.
The sample dialogues were particularly helpful. Even when you give people specific instructions, seeing them acted out successfully by others can be exactly what's needed for complete understanding.
Attention: Managers, Supervisors, and Team Leaders!.......2001-05-09
Kelly and company hit the market in their new book "Master Team Leadership". Instead of offering the "do's and don'ts" so often prescribed in other management mantra, the authors help their readers examine thier own leadership issues in a series of cleverly crafted dialogues. The dialogues represent authentic interviews in a real life context between a manager and an executive coach. In these dialogues, the managers share issues while a coach listens in a consultory capacity.
These dialogues serve as models for anyone who is leading a team. Ask yourself: "Have you ever known that you are supposed to act as a coach in a particular situation, but not known how to really do that?" If so, the answer to that question and more on coaching is covered in this book.
Along with the dialogues are descriptions and examples of the behaviors that a good coach elicits during those difficult conversations with team members.
Moreover, the model illustrates an empowering leadership posture, a coaching-based approach towards leading a team, and the necessary skills associated with successful team leadership.
In an age where so many books are story based, this text helps readers to gain a concrete understanding of the fundamentals of coaching. The practical paperback would be ideal to accompany any workshops on training managers, supervisors or line employees on coaching behaviors or for any workshops with a coaching component.
Mastering Team Leadership - A "To do" list for team leaders.......2001-05-04
Mastering Team Leadership is a very straightforward guide to mastering communications skills in a group environment. Technology has served to accentuate the need for these skills. Mark Kelly provides and framework for pulling the team together and getting everybody pulling in the same direction. This book is a good read for all team members wishing to develop their team skills.
ALL LEADERS SHOULD READ.......2001-04-16

Amazing.......2004-06-03
Amazing!! The author gives fantastic view on human's lifes and their habbits from the point of sociology, psychology and ethics, keeping in mind the mainstream - management in business and how can all the methodically presented principes be usefull in one's life. I can only say that I regret not reading the book earlier, because my life would be much different, for sure. It's a must having this one, since as more times you read it, as more it keeps your thoughts and lifeviews clear. I admire Mr. Adizes' capability of presenting things in a way that anyone can take as much as his receptional capacity is, which is rapidly raising every time the book is rereaded.
