5 out of 5 stars Do you want to buy this book?.......2004-04-12

I haven't decided whether or not the title of this book is making it more saleable or not. I had a totally different idea about what this book would be about because of the title, and since I hadn't read anything else by Pilzer at the time, I was skeptical.
THIS BOOK IS PHENOMENALLY FASCINATING.
Again, the title is extremely misleading, and after asking the author about it, he said that his publisher gave it that title. Of course, the title of "Why economics are like they are" might be more appropriate, but it is in no way indicative of how PHENOMENALLY FASCINATING this book is.
I am EXTREMELY GRATEFUL that the title made me buy the book, and was happily deceived by it. One of my top favorites ever, and you'll note that I read ALOT. PLEASE read this book- it will make you INFINITELY more informed.

5 out of 5 stars This is an MIND-OPENING book!!.......2003-12-21

This book is PHENOMENAL, and I'm no rookie when it comes to reading this type of material. You name the author, I've gotten at least a piece of him/her: Kiyosaki, Robbins, Hansen, Hill, Carnegie, Orman, Schwartz.

"God wants you to be rich" is PHENOMENAL, and I can't wait to track down everything else he's written. So far, the title has been completely misleading in that I was expecting something ENTIRELY different. Then again "economic theory and how it'll change" is hardly an interesting title.

Did I mention that this book is PHENOMENAL, and that it's REALLY PROPHETIC?? This is a pre-internet book, and yet it discusses how technology changes the world and the economy. No matter WHAT the title suggests, this book is NOT AT ALL what you'd expect. This book is entirely engaging; he writes with enough examples so you know EXACTLY what he means, and each one of them is FASCINATING.
PLEASE do yourself a favor and READ THIS BOOK- it'll COMPLETELY change the way you see the economic world- ESPECIALLY if you're completely UNINTERESTED in it!

1 out of 5 stars Warmed over material and Misleading Title.......2003-02-26

I bought two of Paul's books on the strength of ... reviews and I have to say that both were hugely disappointing and a complete waste of money and time. This guy has a knack for recycling widely published material (I mean books, magazines, television, you name it) and packaging it in a way that is decidedly NOT entertaining or engaging. This book is not about how God wants you to be rich and there's nothing in here about how you can enjoy material and spiritual wealth. It's Paul's explaination of how technology drives growth in a free market economy along with copious supporting evidence, prescriptions for changes in government policy, etc. While I agree with much of what he says, its nothing new and, frankly, he doesn't write very well. Life is short: Don't waste it on bad books.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Theology, let me introduce you to Mr. Economics..........2002-09-05

After reading Paul Zane Pilzer's first book, "Unlimited Wealth", I was anxious to read this one. And since I'm a Christian, and the author is Jewish, he comes from the Old Testiment's perspective that during the time of Abraham, God promised him wealth. This well written book helps to explain the theology of economics in today's society. As also stated in "Unlimted Wealth", we have an endless supply of resources. And where one technology fades away, another one takes its place. Two good examples are how CD's have replaced vinyl records and how fuel injectors have mostly replaced carberators in automobiles. We are given the premise all things come from God, and we have at our disposal new technolgies which have the potential to increase our wealth and quality of life. There is a very extensive bibliography with excellent support for the arguments in this book. Finally, we now know that being rich isn't evil or a sin. In the final analysis, it's how we use our wealth that counts. For it is indeed the "love" of money that is the root of evil. An excellent book. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2002-05-27

The amount of ignorance on this board is astounding. Why are they trying to say that Zilfer said that being poor was a sin? What page did they get that from? Maybe I don't understand English very well.

God did promise to bless Abraham, and the Bible teaches that we are children of the promise. We are to reap the blessings of Abraham in the natural and spiritual.

The bible also says that:
2 Corin 8
9For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.

That doesn't mean just spiritually. It means naturally as well. I wish above all things that you may prosper, even as your soul prospers. Maybe somebody ommited that scripture from their Bible.

Y'all need to learn how to break free from that poverty demon who is preaching the poverty doctrine. Yes, the poor will always be with us. But we don't have to be poor -- unless we want to be.

My Pastor taught me some things about tithing and offerings, but it is nothing close to the revelation I have seen in this book.
This book showed me why my tithings and offerings have not prospered me despite my zeal. I discovered the missing links in my spiritual financial planning. I think all pastors should get this book before they start preaching on God's prosperity. It is a teacher for teachers.
                I give it 5 stars.

Foreword by Herbert Boyer, Founder of Genentech

In the fall of 2005, leading scientists from the National Cancer Institute announced the beginning of the cancer genome atlas project, a large-scale endeavor to map every gene implicated in cancer and the first step toward development of new therapies for treating this still baffling disease. This spin-off of the human genome project is only the latest exciting research advance in a decades-long quest to fully understand the biochemistry of the human body and thereby gain insights into the secrets of health, disease, and aging. Biochemist and veteran lab researcher Frank H. Stephenson tells the compelling story of how scientists on many fronts are succeeding in the battle against disease. With a gift for making the complexities of genetics and biochemistry understandable to the average reader, Stephenson offers a fascinating tour of the mechanisms of our body and the therapeutic techniques that are gaining in sophistication and effectiveness every year. From heart disease to AIDS and cancer, he helps you understand how the tools of biotechnology are being used to combat our most common afflictions. Stephenson examines a wide variety of health threats and illnesses: HIV infection, the many forms of cancer, asthma, diabetes, Alzheimer's, obesity, and even erectile dysfunction. Each is discussed in terms of its root cause and treatment in plain, jargon-free language that not only educates but also entertains. This is the ideal primer on the biotechnology revolution for the layperson. Stephenson offers many insights into both the diseases that destroy health and the great promises that biotechnology offers for preserving and prolonging a healthy life.

                  Book Description

How many problems at work arise from the way in which jobs are set up? Either people don't have a clear understanding of their duties and responsibilities, spending time and energy disentangling them from those of their co-workers or they are hemmed in by job specifications that allow no room for movement and initiative.

An alternative system is needed, where jobs can grow and develop: where communication about the work can flow up as easily as down. Dr Belbin describes a radical approach incorporating colour-coding and information technology derived from experiments now being undertaken in three countries. Workset is a new means of delivering greater efficiency in a dynamic process that equally involves managers and jobholders.

Dr R. Meredith Belbin, regarded as the father of team-role theory for his widely-read Management Teams: Why they succeed or fail and its successor Team Roles at Work, obtained his first and higher degree at Cambridge University. Later, in a research, lecturing or consulting capacity, he has visited and worked in many countries. In 1988 he founded Belbin Associates which produces Interplace, a computer-based Human Resource Management System, now used world-wide.

4 out of 5 stars Quirky but useful.......2002-09-26

Since 1980 or earlier, Belbin has been concerned with the way in which we work together and what it is that makes joint work effective.

In his earlier work Belbin identified nine team roles, each of which has a place in successful design and completion of the work of a team. He argues that each person has most and least preferred roles, that the balance of requirements for success tends to change over the life of a project, and that team performance can be greatly enhanced through attention to matching skills and preferences to the role needs. His typology is by now quite well-known, links well to personality preferences such as those measured by the Myers Briggs Type Inventory (MBTI) and has been melded with MBTI in at least one popular 'instrument' used for analyzing individual and team performance.

In Changing the Way We Work, Belbin turns his attention to the nature of work and ways in which it can be organized. His system is derived from an analysis of the nature of jobs, tasks, roles and responsibilities, the various ways in which work can be undertaken by individuals or in groups or teams, and the variety of possible relationships between the manager and those undertaking the worker.

His system makes use of colour coding of seven classifications of work. Both the classification and the colour coding are designed as a tool for building a shared language within an organization through which work requirements and alternative approaches to executing the work can be discussed and agreed.

In some ways, Belbin's analysis reads as being rather 'old-fashioned'. This is because he develops his argument about the nature of work, tasks and roles from a historical perspective, reaching right back to the days of work study (or industrial engineering) and tracing the development of concepts of the job through time study, the development of synthetic standards and the rise of derivative methodologies such as reengineering. One side effect is to make the book a rewarding text for those interested in the history of the development of work organization. Another is to establish a very solid foundation for understanding the distinctions between a job, a task, a role and associated responsibility. This is valuable because these distinctions are often lost in material on this subject.

By taking this historical approach, he provides a solid basis for identifying types of work arrangement derived from the nature of the work itself and proceeds from there to explore how this interacts with the preferences of workers. Part of the value of this approach is that it provides an alternative perspective to the popular current view which tends to work back from worker aspirations and motivation to the work to be done.

The style of the book is unusually personal, laced with examples from the author's personal journey to develop his typology and sometimes illustrated with quite curious examples such as the author's preferred way of using a potato peeler.

In a world dominated by North American texts, this book could only have been written by someone from an English culture, and some people are likely to find the style and cultural assumptions to be distracting. However, whether or not you accept the system as a whole, the material gives a great deal of well structured food for thought.

                  3 out of 5 stars A Plug for Workset.......1999-11-30

How many problems at work arise from the way in which job specifications are defined? Either employees don't have a clear understanding of their duties and responsibilities, spending time and energy disentangling them from those of their colleagues, or they are hemmed in by job descriptions that allow no room for movement and initiative.

In Changing The Way We Work, Belbin proposes Workset, an alternative system where jobs can grow and develop: where communication about the work can flow up as easily as down. It is a radical approach, incorporating colour-coding and information technology, as a new means of delivering greater efficiency in a dynamic process that equally involves managers and their employees.

This book would be of interest to human resource managers and academics specialising in organisational behaviour and development.

Born in 1926, Dr Raymond Meredith Belbin is regarded as the father of team-role theory. He obtained his first degree and doctorate from the University of Cambridge and has conducted research on work study at Cranfield since the 1950s. His other books include Management Teams: Why They Succeed or Fail, Team Roles at Work, and The Coming Shape of Organization. Book Description

Some of us work to live. Some of us live to work. Some of us, by design or default, don't work at all. Whatever your position, as a stakeholder in today's society, there is no avoiding the complex web that is the world of work. Everyone is affected to some degree by issues such as stress and work-life balance, teleworking, offshoring, stakeholder democracy, globalisation -- the list goes on. But, as things continue to change at an ever-faster rate, what can we expect work to look like in the next five, ten, or twenty years?

Above the Clouds is the result of a future studies project carried out by the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM), a not-for profit foundation that promotes excellence in European business. The project aimed to identify trends that will have an impact on the world of work over the coming decade. Work here is defined in terms of methods, organisation and future challenges. It took two years to create the full picture, which is now available in this book. `Trendspotting' sessions were organised across Europe as a means of gathering ideas on where work was heading in the future. The experience and insights of people from a diverse range of backgrounds were included in the project. Working with raw material from these sessions, researchers investigated each of the trends and their possible ramifications on the world of work. The resulting articles were posted for comment online. People from all around Europe responded and some of these views are quoted in this book. In addition, academics and leading CEOs and executives were asked for their reactions to these trends.

Each of the 15 chapters of Above the Clouds analyses a trend in detail and includes perspectives from business, academia and comments from the European public. There are disagreements, but also a surprising amount of convergence on issues such as leadership, outsourcing, global risk, women, age, spirituality, stress and technology.

Rather than trying to offer certainty, the book aims to equip people and organisations with the awareness and adaptability they will need to meet tomorrow's challenges to the way we work. It is fascinating reading for anyone interested in how the big issues of work are likely to impact on us all.

                        Book Description

This book highlights the effects of an increasing use of information technology, IT, in manufacturing. Mainly, focus is on the changes in organisation, in working procedures and in the demands on the capabilities of the personnel, both on the shop floor and the engineering and management levels. It disseminates information from the research and development carried out under ESPRIT's Integration in Manufacturing domain as well as from other activities in similar domains in industry and academia. A particular focus is on giving an overview and resume of work undertaken in the Third and Fourth Research Framework Programmes of ESPRIT.

Revealing startling evidence of how four million Australians are transforming the social and political landscape, this landmark book compiles vast consumer research and examinations of more than 2,000 social and behavioral characteristics to reveal a new approach to marketing based on discretionary consumption. Known as the New Economic Order, the NEOs are powering the economy. NEOs have greater spending propensity and capacity, prefer premium lifestyle experiences, plan and buy on the internet, look for tools to help manage their lives, and are fundamentally different from the rest of society.

                                4 out of 5 stars Interesting analysis.......2007-04-07

Based on an extensive survey, this book documents a social phenomenon which the author calls neo power. It is a group that is now dominating social and political agendas in the US, UK and Australia. The phenomenon has been identified by other writers and thinkers such as Robert Reich.

It is an interesting book, but the analysis seems to be a little weak in providing an empirical base and then showing how conclusions were drawn from the data.

Quote often, we get fascinating glimpses, but the authors do not provide the data or the analysis to convince the reader.
