The book is unique in it's structure, because it's presented both horizontally and vertically in effect, a training management how to matrix,we can read use in either a sequential and linear fashion or by focusing on only a topic or management tool of particular interest.
The book's format is itself a model for learning, presenting first the big picture, then checklists for idea generation, then forms and tools for direct aid and finally, details of additional information on each chapter topic.

This book is highly useful for anyone trying to get an exact sense of how the training industry views itself, its purpose and its standard operating procedures.

    3 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2003-03-12

I finishing my PhD in Cognitive Psychology, and I am new to the field of training. My purpose in reading training books is to discover whether or not I would like to pursue being a trainer, or at the very least use the information to help me in my current field. So, you can take my opinion with a grain of salt.

I know that ASTD is the big professional association for trainers, so I was surprised and disappointed in the limited usefulness of a book sponsored by them.

Other books present design and delivery in a more thorough manner. You can skim this book in a few minutes and get the key points. Whether this is entirely due to the lack of substantive content or due to the book's format is debatable, but I am thinking more the former than the latter.

The key points that are useful are not adequately backed up by sufficient supporting detail or research. I don't think the "Delivery" part should necessarily be backed up by research, but the "Design" part surely should. I would like to know why the techniques they suggest should work and how cognitive processes relate to those techniques. But my thinking that this is important may be more due to my own background, rather than a real flaw of the book. However, even if that is true, I have found other books that do give sufficient supporting detail and/or research.

The other books I recommend instead of this one are:
    - Beyond the Podium by Rossett
    - Developing Training Courses by Hassell-Corbiell
    - Web-Based Training by Horton
    - Multimedia for Learning: Methods and Development by Alessi and Trollip
    - Building Expertise by Clark

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Reference for all Training Preofessionals.......2002-02-10

A quick reference for all things related to Training Design & delivery. However, the coverage is surprisingly deep and some of the chapters are all you'll ever need to know about the topic.

Whether you want an overall picture of Training Design & Delivery or a beginner on his/her first steps and even when you become an expert, you'll find yourself referring to this book again and again.

    The Handbook is divided into three section;
    1) Instructor Based - Covers such topics as instructional systems design, using technology and games during training and evaluating training programs.
    2) Design & delivery of Technology Based Training - If you want a more comprehensive coverage of e-learning, then you should refer to the newly published 'Handbook of e-learning.' However, this section remains quite valuable since it covers some of the other media.
    3) Design & delivery of Self Directed Training - If they will learn on their own, then these are all the resources and tools you will need.

This Handbook, together with the 'ASTD Handbook of Training & Development' are essential reference for all Training & Development professionals. I predict that they will also be joined by the 'ATSD Handbook of e-learning' quite soon!

    5 out of 5 stars A complete skills-training system.......1999-07-19

While making the transition from Sales Management to Sales and Managment Training, I was fortunate enough to have been introduced to Lester Shapiro and his Training Effectiveness Handbook.

Being new to the training field, I did not find the book to be an easy read the first time through. But after applying the pieces of the puzzle one at a time, the logic in the inductive process and it's tie-in with "Guided Discovery" became apparent. At that point, on re-reading the book, I would categorize the book as an easy read.

By applying the techniques introduced by Mr. Shapiro, In less then one year as a trainer, I have written two major training programs that have proven successful in my organization. This book has provided me with a skill that will help further my career in the training industry.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good overview and management advice; short on technology.......2001-01-18

This book is clearly good for the right audience: those new to technology-based training (which the author defines to mean CBT and WBT, not, for example, a flight simulator), training managers with external vendors, and those who are short of the soft skills necessary to navigate the rocks that frequently sink TBT projects. Engineers will also be well served by topics on selling a project internally, GUI design principles, project management, development vendor management, and lots on measurement of effectiveness (Kirkpatrick and ROI).

Unfortunately, you know you are in the target audience only if you read the introduction, which is not possible if you buy the book on line. The book's title and subtitle "art and science of design, development, and delivery" misled me into thinking that a book on TBT would place more emphasis on technology. For me, a learning technology engineer, this means how to efficiently develop cutting-edge web-based training with high volumes, multiple languages, interfaces to learning management systems (LMS), and compliance with the emerging learning technology standards. There was absolutely no mention of such issues; it is assumed that you will outsource to a vendor who will handle those "details". While the book is not short, completeness demands at least an introduction to learning objects, metadata, XML, and the CMI standard for exchanging data with an LMS, with further references provided. This was omitted entirely.

For those wanting technical details, I would give this book a 2, and recommend Horton's Designing Web-Based Training. For the proper target audience the book is a 4, which I will give it, because I could have read the table of contents here if I had noticed the link. In any event, any serious learning professional will buy at least two TBT books, and this one is certainly worth the time and money. A 5 for the content it has, but a 4 for the content it doesn't.

4 out of 5 stars Solid overview of e-Learning fundamentals.......2000-09-21

Kruse and Keil cover a broad range of topics in this book. The authors provide an overview of available learning technologies, advice on how to tailor learning materials to different audiences, and tips on layout.

The nicest part of this book is the section on selling projects internally, which I also found useful as a guide to selling projects externally. The authors discuss the selling process, which benefits to emphasize, and how to quantify cost benefits of technology based training.

In short, the book provides a introductory overview of the leaning technologies that exist, some tips on how to get the most from various technologies, and advice of getting buy-in from stakeholders.

      5 out of 5 stars Well-written, practical information.......2000-08-30

A fine book that balances theory with application quite well. I work as a Technical Writer but have found that most of my work falls under the category of "Instructional Designer," so I did appreciate the background information that the author(s) provided on a variety of learning theories prominent in the field of Instructional Design.

Additionally, the CD-ROM wasn't just a novelty; there were several documents which provided some excellent ideas for corporate templates I was creating, and the sample CBT/WBTs really show how it's meant to be done. The highest feedback I can give is that I will walk away from this book armed with some great ideas that will make my manager and technical team members wonder if I just got back from a super conference. This book really shows you how to improve your processes.

5 out of 5 stars All you need to know about TBT at your fingertips.......2000-02-08

Technology-Based Training is an easy-to-read, helpful guide for readers who are new to TBT, as well as a handy reference for corporate educators familiar with delivering training via CD-ROM, an intranet, or the Internet. It is one-stop reading covering TBT basics, adult learning and instructional design, technology selection, interface design, and phases of TBT project management. The case studies and resources on the companion CD-ROM provided useful models we adapted for use in our first 2 (successful) TBT projects. I keep pulling it off my bookshelf to flip through!

Whether youre a teacher, or corporate trainer; deliver sermons, make proposals, run meetings, or work as a consultant, this audio program recorded from a live Trainers Training offers you the structure to make all of your presentations even more dynamic and influential. The information and exercises presented on this program by two of NLPs top trainers: Lara Ewing and Gary Schmidt, will assist you with creatively and effectively adding elegance to all of your presentation skills. Based on the standard presentation format developed by John Grinder (original co-developer of NLP), Grinders protégé Lara Ewing teaches how to create powerful openings so you can open and engage the conscious and unconscious minds of the audience youre communicating with. Youll also learn how to enhance your closings so you can better ensure your audience takes their learnings with them into the contexts where theyll matter most (i.e. the real world outside the training room). Gary Schmidt, famed for his precision in front of large groups, offers you proven guidelines for analyzing whether an offer to conduct training is ecological and in your and your sponsors best interest. From there he offers a model for designing your material to maximize the learning experience for your audience, from appropriate chunk-sizes to optimal sequencing. He also explains the importance of having sensory-based evidence so you can know if youre on track with your client/audiences desired outcomes. Drawing upon a careers worth of experience these two distinguished international trainers sprinkle anecdotes throughout to provide you with hard-earned fruits, allowing you to learn from their mistakes. This 2CD program is accompanied with a booklet detailing the key principles and exercise steps.
