Book Description

Low inflation, high employment, a stock market that has reached unprecedented heights. The economy doesn't get any better than this. Clearly, for the seventy-six million baby boomers hitting their prime earning years, the "good old days" are right now, and there's no end in sight. Or is there?

In this powerful, prescient book, economists and financial wizards William Sterling and Stephen Waite take an indepth look at how America's baby boomers have transformed the nation's--and the world's--economy and how that transformation must inevitably--and radically--alter its course as the boomers age. Grounded in common sense, infused with the startling clarity, Boomernomics is a book you can't afford to ignore.

Yes, the good times are bound to go on rolling for at least another decade. The demographics fueling the current boom, coupled with the huge benefits of technology and globalization, will take us into the twenty-first century on a building wave of prosperity--and Sterling and Waite show us how best to capitalize on that. But when the wave crashes, it may crash hard and fast.

But the economic "big chill" won't freeze you if you're prepared for it. As Sterling and Waite show, there are strategies we can use, both as private individuals and collectively as a nation, to prosper during the "age wave." Privatizing social security, applying market principles to the health care system, rethinking the concept of retirement, tapping creatively into the potential gold mine on the Internet, using demographics to pinpoint growth industries: these are among the prescriptive suggestions that the authors use to successfully manage their thirty-billion-dollar money market fund--and that will now work for you.

The baby boom is the single most significant social and economic phenomenon of the twentieth century--but its full impact will only be felt in the decades ahead. This landmark book gives you the vision and the knowledge you need to stay ahead of the all-important demographics curve.

As a member of the financial industry, I'm always looking for hints as to which sectors of the market will do well in the future. This book is exactly what I was looking for. Using demographic trends, the authors have come up with some scenarios which will definitely change my outlook on the future.

1 out of 5 stars Gee, I wonder if the authors have any connection to Cato.......1999-02-22

Imagine that you are perusing one of Yahoo's stock message forums, say symbol SSI and some guy with the moniker "catofan" posts a message like this: "CATO is going through the roof, sell SSI short, it's a Ponzi scheme and pile into CATO before it's too late!" What sort of credence would you give such a poster? For me, I wish I had hit the "Next" button, but no, I was unfortunate enough to buy the book.

If you like regurgitated CATO Institute ideology, you'll love this book. Gems like: *Social Security is a Ponzi game; let's put all the SSI money in a safe place---like the stock market. *America has too many low paid workers; lets' do away with "destructive" minimum wages and give generous tax subsidies to employers that pay low wages instead.

All written in the style of: "See Dick. See Jane. See Dick and Jane put all their retirement money in the stock market. See Dick and Jane go dumpster-diving in New Jersey for retirement."

There are actually a few concepts about the Boomer generation that could be useful---when the Boomers all try to sell financial and real estate assets all at once to fund their retirements there *could* be a bear market, just like there are bull markets when they are all buying at the same time.

However, most of the ideas in this book are like some kind of horrible pop song, repeated so much in the press that you find yourself almost unconciously humming along. Save yourself some money and time by surfing over to Cato to get "enlightened".

      Book Description

The use of new technologies, coupled with the fact that there is an increasing amount of work being done on-line, whether on the Internet, intranets, LANs or other networks, has made extensive employee monitoring by employers inexpensive and easy. Employers have legitimate concerns about the efficiency of their employees, of the quality of the goods or services produced, and in relation to security. Additionally, monitoring can assist in employee health and safety, help reduce or eliminate sexual, racial and other forms of harassment, reveal areas in which training is required, and reduce the potential for crime, corruption, and other illegal activities. There is rising concern about the rights of employees, especially with respect to their rights to privacy, but also, for example, with respect to questions of justice and employee autonomy and dignity, to the legitimacy of some informed consent, to respect for employees as persons, and to trust. Clearly there are conflicting rights and interests. Ways need to be found to resolve these conflicts in a manner that is fair to all. This book contributes to the debate and will point the way toward some solutions. The contributors come from a variety of disciplines, countries, and cultures, and so bring a wide range of perspectives to the issues.

This analysis of an extensive four-year research project conducted by the authors covers not only a range of security solutions for at-risk organizations but also the perceptions and attitudes of employees toward workplace surveillance.

      4 out of 5 stars Human aspect.......2007-02-18

It was very pleasing to read an IS book that wasn't as dry as sandpaper.

The authors conducted a survey to find out user (general office worker non-tech, executive staff level, and IT people) attitudes about various IS topics. They then wrap around an introduction while the meat of each section is mainly survey excerpts accompanied by expert comments.

I've passed this book along to many of my colleagues to read. Those who have read it also give it rave reviews.

2 out of 5 stars For those without common sense.......2006-10-02

The book consists of several adequate overview chapters, followed by excerpts from interviews with managers, IT people, and ordinary employees. These interview excerpts can be interesting, but anyone working in the field has certainly heard all of these opinions from their own coworkers. The book also contains the results of various surveys of attitudes and practices.

Beware that this is not a practical book, it's a social science monograph, written in a style that will leave you numb if you're not an academic. Worse, the authors occasionally adopt a condescending tone towards those who have only "intuitions" derived from personal experience, and not their own academic pseudo-knowledge.

THE VISIBLE EMPLOYEE: USING WORKPLACE MONITORING AND SURVEILLANCE TO PROTECT INFORMATION ASSETS WITHOUT COMPROMISING EMPLOYEE PRIVACY OR TRUST is a 'must' for any business serious about privacy and information security in the workplace. It reports on the results of a four-year research project focused on prevailing workplace security measures and their repercussions, discussing solutions, employee attitudes towards monitoring, and privacy issues. Both legal and security issues come into play in a survey essential for IT managers.

5 out of 5 stars The results of a four-year research project concerning prevailing workplace security measures and their side effects.......2006-08-10

"The Visible Employee" presents the results of a four-year research project concerning prevailing workplace security measures and their side effects. On the one hand, deliberate or accidental employee misuse of information systems can cause havoc; on the other, too much monitoring and surveillance of employees can provoke conflict on all levels of hierarchy and cause drag on the efficiency of a business. Chapters present the perspectives of Information Technology professionals, managerial perspectives, employee perspectives, the pros and cons of different approaches to the quandary of balancing security against efficiency, and much more. Numerous appendices from employee interview protocol to a recommended password policy ("never use a dictionary word for a password" or "never send a password using email") and an index round out this valuable guide to businesses trying to successfully compete in a rapidly evolving and interconnected world.

5 out of 5 stars Big Brother in the 21st century.......2004-01-28

A few months ago, I applied for an adjunct position -- teaching one course, online from my home computer. To my amazement, the private "alternative" university demanded a background check. I said thanks but no thanks -- and only now do I understand what happened.

Lane, author of Naked Employee, explains that companies fear risks associated with loose cannon employees, although he doesn't use those words. They risk embarrassment, lawsuits and more. And now, when it's so easy to order background checks, why take those risks?

If you resist, says Lane, prospective employers won't think you're principled; they'll think you're hiding something. After all, background checks revealed that fifty percent of resumes submitted to a major search firm included falsified information, ranging from imaginary degrees to exaggerated responsibilities.

Once you're hired, you can be subjected to physical exams and ongoing surveillance. Lane reviews the relative invasiveness of hair, blood and urine tests. Uniforms can be equipped with devices to prevent theft and track your whereabouts. Personal phone calls can be monitored long enough to discover they're personal -- a good two to three minutes.

As I read this book, I grew more and more horrified. Lane stays focused on what's happening today, only briefly suggesting ways to frame the problem on a broader scale. For instance, at the very end of the book, he notes that providing health insurance gives employers a solid basis for questioning employee lifestyles, on and off the job.

In a much earlier book, JobShift, WIlliam Bridges called for individuals to become independent contractors rather than employees. He argued that separating health insurance from employment would protect our privacy as well as our physical health. A paradigm shift, requiring major changes in infrastructure, would be required to alter our relationship with our employers, careers and jobs.

Thus the employment relationship has become decidedly lopsided. In return for invasion of privacy, the employer offers no long-term guarantees of employment. And in at least one non-traditional "university," the background checks have become a substitute for hiring: the "dean" didn't know anything about what was being taught -- just checked off boxes. I wonder how prevalent this trend has become.

      Book Description

Employers need to protect themselves from workers whose behavior damages the company. Does that give them the right to conduct random drug tests, read employees' e-mail, search desk drawers, and monitor off-the-job activities?

Workplace privacy issues are complex -- many employers are confused about their legal and ethical rights. The New Battle Over Workplace Privacy provides critical information to help companies create appropriate policies and practices. Through case examples, highlights of state and federal laws, checklists, and sample policies, this book shows a company how to:

      * protect itself from employee theft, substance abuse, and other misconduct
      * stay within legal bounds by learning what laws are (and aren't) in place
      * avoid litigation -- and win the cases that do go to court.

      4 out of 5 stars Be prepared!.......2006-02-16

Employers and managers today face an increasing number of threats to the organization. Theft of business assets costs U.S. companies an estimated $40 billion a year. More than one million employees a year are victims of workplace violence. Employees who download games from the internet increase the risk of introducing viruses to company computer systems and expose their employers to charges of software piracy. However, measures that employer's have taken to address these issues, like workplace surveillance and performance monitoring, have sparked a violent debate, and several lawsuits claiming invasion of privacy, sexual harassment and discrimination. Your best defense, says William S. Hubbartt, is to be prepared. He presents guidelines for helping you to avoid battles over workplace privacy and examines some of the laws that protect employees' rights.

      · Develop policies that will stand up in court. The best way to avoid lawsuits is to clearly spell out the policies that the company will use to handle privacy issues like testing, conduct and performance monitoring. Before you draft your policies, make sure you are aware of federal and state laws that apply.
      · When screening job applicants, relate all questions and checks to the job.
      · Protect computerized records containing information about employees.
      · Develop tests that fairly evaluate employee's work attributes.
      · If you use drug testing, notify applicants and employees that they will be tested. Utilize procedures that allow them as much privacy and dignity as possible.
      · Have a clear business justification for formal dress codes, such as public image, security or safety. Apply dress codes equally to men and women. Communicate the purpose of the dress code to employees.
      · Banning solicitation at the workplace must apply to everyone, from girl scout cookies to distributing religious literature.
      · Respect your employees lifestyle choices.
      · Investigate if the problem is serious.
      · Use monitoring to check routine issues.

          Book Description

Workplace privacy has become one of the hottest employement law issues to sweep the nation. What was once popular fiction has sprung to life with pervasive employee monitoring and surveillance. The rapid digitization of the workplace has also created growing concerns over data security and privacy. Headlines abound with news of strict legislation governing the use and transfer of employee information. Now, organizations must deal with the privacy "fall-out" of September 11th. Anti-terrorism efforts have placed employers in the precarious position of balancing employee privacy rights with the need to assist homeland security and provide cooperation to law enforcement.

If the recent developments and trends in workplace privacy make one thing clear; it is that employers need to wake up to the seriousness of their privacy challenge. This Task Force Report is designed to give the reader a comprehensive overview of workplace privacy issues. It is an excellent first step in understanding the new "privacy imperative" and will provide assistance to a wide range of organizations - from those who are just beginning to tackle privacy concerns, to those who are proactively managing privacy issues and assessing information practices.
