    Book Description

This book shows how current and recent market prices convey information about the probability distributions that govern future prices. Moving beyond purely theoretical models, Stephen Taylor applies methods supported by empirical research of equity and foreign exchange markets to show how daily and more frequent asset prices, and the prices of option contracts, can be used to construct and assess predictions about future prices, their volatility, and their probability distributions.

Stephen Taylor provides a comprehensive introduction to the dynamic behavior of asset prices, relying on finance theory and statistical evidence. He uses stochastic processes to define mathematical models for price dynamics, but with less mathematics than in alternative texts. The key topics covered include random walk tests, trading rules, ARCH models, stochastic volatility models, high-frequency datasets, and the information that option prices imply about volatility and distributions.

Asset Price Dynamics, Volatility, and Prediction is ideal for students of economics, finance, and mathematics who are studying financial econometrics, and will enable researchers to identify and apply appropriate models and methods. It will likewise be a valuable resource for quantitative analysts, fund managers, risk managers, and investors who seek realistic expectations about future asset prices and the risks to which they are exposed.

    Book Description

The increasing globalization of work--coupled with rapid advancements in communications technology--is making age-old teaching methods irrelevant. To thrive in the plugged-in future workplace, students today need to learn a whole new set of fundamental skills.

According to David Thornburg, we are on the cusp of a completely new era. The conventions of interoffice hierarchies, deskbound workers, and long-term employment contracts will quickly give way to a "telematic" model of work, in which workers are free to hop from client to client and country to country at the speed of a DSL connection.

Today's curriculum is predicated on yesterday's realities, and must be reexamined to better reflect the digital age. This book explores

The foundations of the future economy,

The characteristics needed to succeed in the emerging world, and

The changes we need to make in education to ensure that all students leave school prepared to face the challenges of a redefined world.

The New Basics: Education and the Future of Work in the Telematic Age provides an in-depth discussion of the skills necessary for professional success in the coming years, along with strategies on how best to teach them in the classroom. Filled to capacity with visionary observations, practical suggestions for innovative instruction, and engaging discussions of the historical precedents for remodeled curriculum, this book is essential for those seeking to address the pressing issues of the new millennium.

Given the rapid ascendancy of computer telephony and the breadth of technologies involved in the field, it's high time that we had a reference guide to make sense of it all. Richard Grigonis understands that the simplistic definition of computer telephony--the convergence of computers, telephone systems, and data networks--only scratches the surface of all that's involved. The Computer Telephony Encyclopedia, then, is all-encompassing, if a little intimidating to everyone but those already knee-deep in the field.

Grigonis, chief technical editor of Computer Telephony magazine, takes readers through the computer telephony field from A to Z, with a sense of both scholarship and style. Although sometimes it's difficult to wade through entries for call centers and billing systems that are pages long, Grigonis frequently balances his acronym-laded prose with humor (the section on telemarketing is a perfect example).

Grigonis covers a wide swath of technology and applications, including voice over IP, DSL, and videoconferencing, as well as such esoteric fare as E&M signaling and session initiation protocol. A section on Who's Who in Computer Telephony provides brief sketches of some of the key figures in the field, with contact information provided in some cases.

With the Computer Telephony Encyclopedia, Grigonis has provided an indispensable guide to a complex subject, a book that should sit on the desk of every telecom manager. --John Frederick Moore

    Book Description

    If you want to grasp the full length and breadth of the rapidly developing computer telephony field, this book is the place to start. Author Richard Grigonis thoroughly explains even the most abstruse ideas in a concise manner that is aimed at all kinds of readers -- students, business executives, telecom managers, call center supervisors or entrepreneurial developers. Each encyclopedia entry is both an adroit explanation of computer telephony technology and a buyer's guide-like discussion of real-world products based upon technology currently available for business and residential communications solutions. ;

Get up to speed on hundreds of computer telephony topics with thorough, practical and straightforward explanations that include usage and how the subject relates to other technologies.

2 out of 5 stars Not for the Uninitiated.......2001-06-27

I was looking for a good introduction to the field of Computer Telephony and bought this book. Unfortunatly, I found it to be more confusing than helpful. Almost every section reads like a puzzle that you have to assemble. An example in the "Cable Telephony" section:

"The NCS profile of MGCP, which is known as the Network-based Call Signaling Protocol, NCS 1.x, the NCS profile, or simply NCS, has been modified from the CableLabs / PacketCable MGCP 0.1 draft in several ways - for example, the NCS protocol contains some extensions and modifications to MGCP, and the NCS protocol contains some minor simplifications from MGCP. Still, although MGCP is not NCS, and NCS is not MGCP, the names MGCP and NCS are generally used interchangeably, and MGCP in terms of cable telephony is taken to mean the NCS profile of MCGP".

I understand that to take this paragraph out of its context is unfair and makes it look even more confusing but my point is that if you are not initiated and already comfortable with several concepts in the field of Computer Telephony, I think you will not really benefit from this book.

Whereas if you have been working in the field for many years, you might appreciate this book as a good reference but then, I do agree with a previous reviewer that wrote: "(the book) is poorly organized for researching information, e.g., its index is essentially a word occurance listing".

4 out of 5 stars Nice companion to Newton's Telecom Dictionary........2001-03-02

I suspect that it may have been intended, based on the title; the _Computer Telephony Encyclopedia_ is a great companion to _Newton's Telecom Dictionary_. Whereas the dictionary has a paragraph or two on thousands of topics, the encyclopedia, as expected, has on average of a few pages on a few hundred topics -- literally ranging from "A & B (Robbed) Bit Signaling" and "A/D Converter" to "Zulu Time" and "Zzzzzzz". While I feel that Newton's is a better and more useful book (a must-own for everyone in the industry), I think this is an excellent second book to buy if you've ever wanted more detail than Newton's provides.

5 out of 5 stars The Best CT Book I've Found So Far.......2000-11-08

I'm in the Telecom field and bought The Computer Telephony Encyclopedia to help me in my daily attempts to understand the many new technologies that are foisted upon me every day. I found the book to be the best concentration of information in this area. Aside from a few entries (such as Quality of Service and T1) it is not an overly technical tome and is accessible by the average telecom manager, sales person or executive.

According to the acknowledgements, the author has pulled in data from various sources such as the full range of CMP magazines and he also commissioned some industry authors to contribute new material. This plus 80 some pages of product tables make the CT Encyclopedia a volume that I must keep close at hand.

2 out of 5 stars Not Technical Enough.......2000-11-02

This book is heavy on jargon and vendor provided information - it is essentially a collection of articles from Computer Telephony magazine, without much editing or organization. It lacks technical depth and is poorly organized for researching information, e.g., its index is essentially a word occurance listing.

5 out of 5 stars Best resource in the industry!.......2000-08-18

Richard Grigonis has made some very complicated technology much more accessible, much more useful with this fabulous piece of work. He's got everything covered, which is quite an accomplishment in a field where things change so rapidly. This is one of those books that's going to get a lot of wear and dog-eared pages from constant use. Computer telephony has been one of those fields that's been filled with a lot of cheerleading and hype and not a lot of good, solid, thoughtful analysis and reporting -- except for Grigonis' work. His work really stands out, because he thinks hard about the issues, understands the tech, and has a really strong grasp of how the tech is used in real life. Not too many people would tackle something so enormous as an encyclopedia devoted to one of the most complex -- but critical -- technologies of our day. He's done amazing work, highly recommended.

      Book Description

This innovative new book explores the structure, growth and effectiveness of virtual communities in computer-mediated environments. In spite of initial enthusiasm, much uncertainty remains about the prospects of virtual teams and the technology that supports their collaboration. This book seeks to confront these issues and offers a unique insight into the realities of virtual working.

Combining both software and organizational learning perspectives, this important volume investigates the role of computer-mediated-communication (CMC) in dispersed teams, focusing particularly on the communication processes involved. By combining theoretical and case study material, the authors argue that successful teamwork can be achieved without face-to-face contact, even whilst undertaking unstructured and non-routine tasks. These comprehensive case studies show that by changing the structure of the organization in addition to the use of advanced technologies, new and important patterns of communication have emerged in virtual communities.

An essential resource for academics working in the fields of management science and organizational learning, this valuable study will also be of interest to managers, practitioners and the wider open source software community as a whole.

Written by well-respected experts, this how-to guide provides patterns for the design of human computer human interaction (HCHI). An increasing number of applications are currently designed for use by more than one user, eg: multi-player games, interactive web sites, mobile phones, collaborative learning systems, interactive workspaces and smart environments. In these areas there is a shift from (HCI) human computer interaction to (HCHI) human computer human interaction. The role of patterns in this movement is twofold: 1 st – patterns focus on the human user of the system; 2 nd – patterns assist developers in the development process of groupware applications.

5 out of 5 stars Surprising and insightful!.......2007-08-29

Whenever I get a new book to review, I always approach it with a mixture of anticipation, curiosity, and dread, especially given the increasing number of books about patterns and, in this case, the size -- 581 pages! When I finally found a small window and sat down with "Patterns for Computer-Mediated Interaction," I was intending to hurriedly skim as much of the text as possible to get an idea of what it was like. Several hours later, I was hooked. What a surprise this book is! Yes, it's topical. The patterns are about developing software to allow people to have the best interaction experience possible. That is where the world is headed, no doubt! The patterns in this book, however, are not just about the technical aspects of these systems, the authors also address the "socio-technical" issues that are important for the people-side of this domain. What was especially interesting to me, as a long-time "patterns fan," was the intriguing and enlightening discussion of pattern languages and the close examination of the pattern language of Christopher Alexander. I've read many essays on this topic but this presentation was very special. I learned a lot. You can't ask for more than that. I can recommend this book whole-heartedly, not only for developers in this domain but also for anyone who wants to study a model pattern language and learn more about patterns and how they work together to solve problems. Two thumbs up!

            Book Description

This volume is part of a publication series emerging from an international interdisciplinary study group on "New Technologies and Work (NeTWork)". NeTWork is sponsored by the Werner?Reimers Foundation (Bad Homburg, Germany) and the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme (Paris). The NeTWork study group has set itself the task of intellectually penetrating various problem domains posed by the introduction and spread of new technologies in work settings. This problem focus requires interdisciplinary co?operation. The usual mode of operating is to identify an important problem within the NeTWork scope, to attempt to prestructure it and then to invite original contributions from European researchers or research teams actively involved in relevant analytic or developmental work. A specific workshop serves to cross?fertilize the different approaches and to help to integrate more fully the individual contributions. The concept of telematics refers to the integration of computer, telecommunication and information technologies. It alludes to the opportunities presented by the technical means to communicate and transfer data over large distances by "intelligent equipment". Teleshopping, teleconferencing, teleworking and telebanking are but a few examples of a development which influences both public and private environments. Both households and workplaces are likely to be thoroughly changed by telematics. This publication emphasises the application of telematics in working environments. The central questions of the book are: How will the present and future development of telematics effect the nature and organization of work, and under which conditions will this development be optimal? From the various contributions it is clear that telematics is not a single direct cause or determinant of particular changes in work and organization. The development and application of telematics depend on decision making of actors at a political scene both outside and inside the work organizations. The effects of the use of these applications appear to be co?determined by many other factors. In fact, the technology interacts with political, economic, and social factors in a complex process that shapes new organizational forms and work relationships.

              Description:
This paper will focus on the current condition of the ''Information Society'' in Japan and analyze whether some aspects of the WSIS Declaration Principle and Plan of Action will work in Japan through the national IT strategy, e-Japan. This paper examines how (a) learning traits, (b) socio-cultural traits and (c) technological issues are causing digital stratification (divides), and discuss four tactics to promote digital inclusion in Japan among its elderly: (i) Clarifying the benefits of digital inclusion and/or demerits of digital exclusion, (ii) fostering self-efficacy in adaptability to change in technology, (iii) increasing cohorts with high digital skills and (iv) developing barrier-free information and communication technology. Along with discussing perspectives on how broadband may intensify exclusion, this paper also ends with a critical perspective on how the Japanese national strategy aimed at efficiency might leave a negative impact on civil society.
