5 out of 5 stars An accessible, all-around guide to setting up a business.......2003-08-30

Steven Rogers, a professor at the Kellogg School of Management, has put together a comprehensive handbook for aspiring entrepreneurs. Written in plain language that does not assume prior knowledge of business or economics, this guide covers all the major topics that entrepreneurs face in setting up and managing a business: writing up a business plan, compiling and understanding financial statements, making a company profitable, valuing a company, and raising money.

On the one hand, Professor Rogers has written a reference book that assembles much of the information that people intuitively know. In that sense, the guide can be useful to people who want to make sure they are "not forgetting something." On the other hand, though, this guide tackles many issues that quite a few entrepreneurs look down upon: for example, accounting. Professor Rogers not only explains how entrepreneurs should handle the mundane aspects of business like accounting, but also elucidates why entrepreneurs should pay attention to those aspects at all. In doing so, he alerts entrepreneurs about the kind of problems they may face and recommends action to prevent them.

Professor Rogers has compiled anecdotes, business quotations, industry data, and mathematical formulae (which he explains in detail), to write an accessible guide for aspiring business owners. This balance, between serious and humorous, and fact and theory makes the book both fun to read and very useful -- a definite read for those daunted by the prospect of starting their own business.

Book Description

This book shows how to assess market opportunities. Building on lessons learned by studying numerous entrepreneurs, the book details the author's seven domains model for assessing new business ideas. The model is comprised of four market and industry domains and three related to the entrepreneurial team. These seven domains address the central questions in the assessment of any market opportunity: Are the market and industry attractive? Does the opportunity offer compelling customer benefits as well as distinct advantage over other solutions to the customer's needs? Can the team deliver the results they seek and promise to others? The book is practical and sets out how to run a customer-driven feasibility study that will guide the assessment of any new business idea or opportunity before any investment or time has been spent on the project.

This book is the best of the business books I reviewed for ideas on how to help approach the research and analysis for my business idea. It's more aimed at folks with business ideas that are geared to being large scale enterprises rather than a small individual proprietorship. Most of the "How to write a business plan" books are worthless. You can find the same information on the Internet for free - try the SBA website. This provides a nice structure for analysis outside those cookie-cutter books.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read before plunging into an Entrepreneurial lifestyl.......2005-03-24

Everyone likes their own ideas and everyone believes that their own ideas are fool-proof. There's no way to check and grind your idea/business plan before going to actual VCs. Till now the only way to analyze your idea was by going through the 3Fs (Famliy, Friends and Fools).
Here is where 'The New Business Road Test' comes in as a savior. This book has all the ideas/ procedures/ questions/ & guidelines to review and grill your idea to perfection before plunging into the real venture. There are many books out there to tell you HOW to write a business plan, but none to actually analyze your business plan.
The presentation of the book is quite simple to understand and refer to in future. The 'Seven Domain Analysis' diagram really makes it simple to review any idea/plan and term it as feasible or not-feasible.
I read the book before going into my first venture and it made me look at my business plan in a whole different way. I was not only able to identify the loop holes but also the ways i could improve my business plans. Even today while I am lookin at a new venture, I find myself always going back and refering to this book.
Once Read, this book will make a place in your entrepreneurial life. This is a must-read book for entrepreneurs as well as VC aspirants.

5 out of 5 stars For the novice and expert alike...........2004-11-10

Having launched several major ventures over the past decades, I have learned that careful advance planning and analysis cannot be over-emphasized. Through the years, I have struggled to develop a robust framework to analyze opportunities before investing time and money.

Mullins has beaten me to the task. Full of frameworks and anecdotes, theory and practice. Thorough, logical, insightful, and easy to follow. An excellent roadmap for the novice and expert alike. My three copies are already dog-eared.

5 out of 5 stars the New Business Road Test.......2004-11-08

As an aspiring entrepreneur you are so convinced that your great idea will work that you want to go straight to the business plan. This book gives you the framework and discipline to force yourself to cut your emotional ties with your idea and pick it apart. If your idea still stands after having gone through the rigorous scrutiny described in the book then you have a very strong foundation for taking your idea to the next stage.
An excellent book that I strongly recommend to anybody who has a great idea for a new business, product or service regardless of whether as an entrepreneur or business executive

If you are preparing a business plan to sell the merits of your business to an outside investor, this is the book you should use for guidance. BUY THIS BOOK TODAY!

Most business planning guides do not address the investor, in fact, they often ignore the investor completely. In addition to preparing a sound plan, this book tells you how to value your business, communicate this value to your investor, and demonstrate to the investor how he/she will get their money out.

EXCELLENT BOOK. It delivers what it promised.

EXCELLENT BOOK. If you ever wanted to know EVERYTHING about investing, financial planning, taxes, and making money this is required reading.

I haven't counted every word, but even the glossary must have defined at lease a thousand financial terms. It is filled with hundreds of pages of sound financial advice. Obviously, this book has been THOUOGHLY researched.

My friends are buying copies for their adult children. I asked them why, and they said that this book is filled with the things EVERY young person need to know and they, as the parent, may have failed to communicate. Perhaps, because they, the parents took for granted that their children would absorb the information just by being their children.

And, these are my CPA's, those with MBA's, leader of major corporations, and my stockbrokers. I do not understand why, but my wealthier and better-educated friends understand the value of this book more than the less educated and less wealthy. That is very unfortunate. But isn't that usually the case? Often, those that need the information the most appreciate it the less.

ANYONE that sincerely wants to buy a thoroughly researched financial reference book filled with hundreds of pages of detailed factual financial information will not be disappointed. Buy it today.

1 out of 5 stars It's not BAD, but ..........2007-08-19

The Millionaire Mailman does contain a plethora of financial information. "My Inside Story On How I Became Rich..." however, is nonexistent.Did he write his own review? There are hundreds of pages of facts, but no tales of delivering mail in the sweltering heat of Texas while being offered lemonade by "the richest families in Texas" in their air conditioned homes(or anything like that). I was expecting a story, but I got a book full of facts you can literally find anywhere. I suppose it's nice to have all that copious information in one place if you need it, but there is nothing amusing or intersting or even any advice. "Inside Story" was very misleading to me.

        Book Description

My dad, Silas Baker, has always been my entrepreneur and financial inspiration.

In 1938, after marrying my mother, Lucille, on Christmas eve, with only the change in his pockets and a prayer on his lips, he left the red dirt cotton fields of Huntsville, Alabama and moved north to Nashville, Tennessee. He was 19 and my mother was only 17.

Dad had an uncanny ability to maintain his focus even when everyone around him lost his or hers. In more than 50 years as the Chief Executive Officer of his own companies, he never played hooky from work. Since I worked for him for 10 of those years, I often wished that he would say, "Don, lets forget about work today and go fishing." But, of course, he never did. Committed to his big family, he took his family obligations and business responsibilities seriously.

Facing hostile discrimination, violent competitors, few resources, many obligations and very little formal education, dad built one of the most successful construction firms in middle Tennessee.

This book, with hundred of pages of researched information, is about how to create wealth by persevering during difficult life moments, understanding basic financial concepts and the power of God.
