Taxes for Dummies: 1998 Edition, by Eric Tyson and David J. Silverman, is another title in the bestselling Dummies series, in which Tyson has authored four other books. Accurate and reliable in its lighthearted presentation, Taxes for Dummies includes tax-planning tips that will help you save money beyond April 15. While the book is just right for the average taxpayer, it may lack for people wanting a more in-depth guide--such as those running a small business from home or those trying to figure out capital gains on a mutual fund.
Book Description
Get the edge you need to save time and trouble when it comes to preparing your taxes. "Far and away the best!" is how the
Los Angeles Times describes the all-new 1999 edition of
Taxes For Dummies by tax authorities Eric Tyson and David J. Silverman. Complete with all the forms and line-by-line instructions written in plain English, this smart, user-friendly guide offers tons of tips for maximizing deductions, avoiding audits, and planning for taxes year-round.
Taxes For Dummies, 1999 Edition delves deeply into the latest round of tax law changes passed by Congress in 1997 and details the how and why of taxes, forms and schedules, audits and errors, and strategic tax planning. This indispensable reference book also includes a complete list of IRS publications, addresses, phone numbers, and the most-used forms and schedules, along with generous doses of humor and insight to make your tax preparation less, well, taxing.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent, Especially the Advice on Dealing with the IRS.......2005-01-09
Easy-to-read, well organized, and thoroughly helpful. I recommend "Taxes 2005 for Dummies" to people who want to prepare their own taxes, either by hand or by computer. Excellent advice and strategies for dealing with the IRS.
Table of contents lists each line of the tax form, making information easy to find. Provides instructions for the 1040EZ, 1040A and 1040. (Most books just cover the 1040.) Icons indicate tax-saving tips and warnings to keep you out of trouble. The writers have done an excellent job of turning IRS technical jargon into something we can actually understand.
The only book that guides you step by step to dealing with the IRS. If you received a letter from the IRS, this book will tell you what the letter means, and how to respond to it. The authors even provide sample letters so you can respond promptly. The exceptionally well-written advice for dealing with the IRS is worth the price of the whole book.
Information on reconstructing missing tax records is superb. The authors provide excellent suggestions for substantiating cost basis, business expenses, and fair market value.
The book does not include tax forms, so you will need to obtain them elsewhere (library, post office, on the Internet).
Readable and Helpful.......2004-04-08
I purchased this book because I was using TaxCut Standard, which is not very helpful at times, and I got stuck on a particular form. This book helped me to understand the Individual 1040, using language that is more clear and personable than the official IRS instructions.
Anybody who itemizes deductions, or who might do so in the future, will find _Taxes for Dummies_ extremely helpful. Plus, throughout the book, there are tips for handling personal finances. Most of these are geared toward the higher-income earner, but nearly everyone can learn from the tips about home ownership and retirement savings. The advice is sound.
I strongly recommend this book as an aid for preparing one's own 2003 taxes.
Comprehensive, but sometimes vague.......2004-03-21
I like this book a lot, because it gave me great ideas about how to structure my finances to take advantage of the tax deductions the government provides.
While the book makes it easy to read and understand your tax return, it fails in its efforts to make complicated tax issues simple. In many cases, I found more questions than answers, particularly in the parts that talk about the section 179 deduction and the modifications made after September 11, 2001.
If you are looking to be able to read and understand your tax return and to identify the tax deductions that are available, this is a great book. Even after reading it, however, you'll probably need a professional tax preparer to make sure you're doing it all correctly.
Good no-nonsense guide to all sorts of tax situations.......2000-10-06
This book tries it's hardest to explain taxes in an easy to understand fashion for us normal people who don't have time to look through those extremely complex IRS instructions and other gibberish they give us taxpayers. The book does a pretty decent job of it too (however to accomplish that flawlessly, in my humble opinion, is impossible). Overall, any individual or small business that needs a few clues on how to do your taxes can benefit from this book. I can't wait for the 2001 edition to come out!
Good for basics and new tax law description/definition........1999-02-21
The book answered all my questions on the new 1998 tax laws. It was also a good guideline for those of us who don't understand taxes very well and are more familiar with the EZ-forms. This was my second year doing the long form with all the attached schedules and the book helped me develop an understanding of what the majority of the terms and references mean. However, since the level of information was BASIC, some of my questions were not addressed and I did not like how the book stated, "...see your tax advisor...". The whole reason I bought the book was so that I wouldn't have to have someone else do my taxes. Although there are only a few unanswered questions for my case, this still prevented me from completing them on my own. Some topics that should be addressed more thoroughly are Capital Gains, Corporate Relocations, and Itemized Deductions. At a minimum, this book should provide a complete listing of topics not covered thoroughly enough to complete the tax forms, and refer you to another book (For Dummies)instead of a legal IRS publication (or tax advisor).
Book Description
Hang in there -- we've got just the book to get you out of trouble with Canada Customs and Revenue Agency and on the road to pain-free tax filing! Compiled by bestselling author and tax accountant Tim Cestnick and a skilled team of accounting professionals, this book gives you insider tips in an easy-to-use, fun format. Book Description
Companies expect managers to use financial data to allocate resources and run their departments. But many managers can’t read a balance sheet, wouldn’t recognize a liquidity ratio, and don’t know how to calculate return on investment. Worse, they don’t have any idea where the numbers come from or how reliable they really are.
In Financial Intelligence, Karen Berman and Joe Knight teach the basics of finance—but with a twist. Financial reporting, they argue, is as much art as science. Since nobody can quantify everything, accountants always rely on estimates, assumptions, and judgment calls. Savvy managers need to know how those sources of possible bias can affect the financials—and they need to know that sometimes the numbers can be challenged.
While providing the foundation for a deep understanding of the financial side of business, the book also arms managers with practical strategies for improving their companies’ performance—strategies such as “managing the balance sheet” that are well understood by financial professionals but rarely shared with their nonfinancial colleagues.
Accessible, jargon-free, and filled with entertaining stories of real companies, Financial Intelligence will help nonfinancial managers be smarter and more confident in their everyday work.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book ... for beginners only.......2007-06-10
If you have some understanding of finance - even basic - don't expect to learn anything out of this book. I was expecting much more than that given the target audience - "managers" - and the publisher. I doubt that in today's world, a manager wouldn't have some sort of understanding of finance. Nonetheless, the book is well written, explained and organized. I had my analyst read it as an introduction and he liked it a lot.
Clear, interesting, fun.......2007-03-30
I had to buy this book for a fiscal management class. It is probably one of the best management books that I've read. It is really clear. I don't really have a head for finance, but this book makes it simple and entertaining. There are lots of examples from real life. This is a great book if you want to know more about financial vocabulary and basics. Also might be a good brushup, though I was starting from scratch so I wouldn't know.
A good beginning..........2007-03-10
This is an overview of what to look for in balance sheet and income statement as a manager. However, better information resides with cost based accounting around activities(ABC/M). This book is an excellent read for simple information. Not bad for the price!
Fun with managerial accounting.......2007-01-09
I really enjoyed reading "Financial Intelligence" by Karen Berman and Joe Knight. The authors use a fairly casual tone (often humorous) to combine a semester's worth of managerial accounting with a healthy dose of private sector application. The book is a quick read and should be great as an introduction to managerial accounting or a refresher for anyone responsible for managing a P/L at any level.
Very valuable!.......2006-11-11
I highly recommend this book! It's an easy read for non-accountants! This should be in every manager's desk for quick reference. This has helped me a lot in making day-to-day decisions.

Customer Reviews:
Too pricey.......2001-05-28
The information presented in the book is useful but can be found in many other technical writing books and style guides at less than half the price.
Book Description
* Examples are given from ‘real life’ business situations
* Practical information and ‘Golden Rules’ on what to do and what not to do
* Plain English explanations of legal terms
This book explains the differences between fair indemnity clauses and those that are unduly onerous and will give readers an understanding of the nature of indemnities and their potentially devastating effects.
This series explains the basics of commercial contract law, highlights how to spot potential issues before they become a problem, and then how to work with a lawyer more effectively if things go wrong. It is a practical series definitely intended for corporate managers rather than lawyers.

Helpful for the basics in writing........2001-12-19
This book by Richard Andersen is helpful if you are unsure of your basic writing skills, but does little to help you out with being creative or playing with words, which is what I expected when I bought it. Still, it does complete it's purpose and explains some of the quirksome nuances of the English language that we all must conquer to be good writers. If you didn't master English in Junior High real well, you probably could use this book.

Clear, concise, effective.......2002-07-13
The book does just what the title promises: it tells you how to move your reader to action. Chambers' advice is focused, organized, and, most importantly, sound. Examples are clear and memorable. Like many people who have to write a great deal, I know the basic ideas (any rhetorician will tell you that most of them go all the way back to Aristotle); still, this is a painless--even enjoyable-- refresher. If you're an experienced writer, or if you teach writing, Chambers' examples are worth the price of the book.
Who will find the book most valuable? If you wish all your communication could be in person or via e-mail, you'll be surprised to learn how easy it is to translate your face-to-face communication skills into good, effective writing. (The book doesn't deal specifically with e-mail, but following Chambers' advice could help you avoid a lot of the "tone of voice" problems e-mail is prone to.) No matter what your comfort level with writing, if you've ever suffered "brainlock" as you faced a deadline on an important document, this is the book you want on your desk.
Simple basics ARE the keys to good writing.......2001-05-09
This is as much a response to hbckelly as it is a book review. The critic writes that s/he is a professional writer and did not get much benefit from this book because it is simple and basic. I am also a professional writer and I got tremendous benefit from the book. And the reason for this benefit is that it DOES discuss the basics.
Good writing is simple. It is organized. It speaks clearly to the reader. And that is exactly what this book teaches.
While the book targets business people, not "professional writers", the fact is that pros should listen to the same advice as beginners. If hbckelly would check his/her ego, s/he might find that s/he would learn something valuable from the book. I did.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Those who know the basics of writing will find this useless.......2000-02-15
I am a professional business writer and editor, and I decided to purchase this book to gain a fresh look at what I do for a living. What I found was a slim book filled with tired old words of advice. If you have any writing background, this book will be of little use to you. However, I can see that it could be of use to people who don't have a grasp of the basics. Those people would probably be better served by a more intensive reference book, though.
Ignite your reader's fire, then just fan the flames........1999-04-19
As a marketing professional whose business it is to be both creative and succinct, I can't believe how much "great stuff" Dennis Chambers has packed into "Writing to Get Action." Further, as an individual whose driving personal interests include pursuing the ways in which humor and creativity can "jazz up" every aspect of one's life, I highly recommend this dynamic little volume (even if you think your writing skills are above reproach)!
First, "Writing . . . Action" does a fabulous job of feeding us, in delicious detail, the nuts and bolts of writing in a way which keeps the recipient reading. But at least equally importantly, and what I think is so unique about Chambers' book, is that it devotes a hefty chunk of a chapter to the notion of grabbing that busy executive's interest in the first place. And without that, after all, what's the point?
Buy and devour this book. You will come away satiated with the knowledge of how to really focus on what it is that you need to say. Best of all, you will have gained some insights into how to beckon those quiescent creative thoughts which will open your memo or letter with creative sparkle.
This book will make you better at your job!.......1999-03-14
In "Writing to Get Action," Chambers clearly draws upon years of experience as a professional business writer. He has convinced me to write short sentences with short words. He has reminded me to consistently write from the reader's perspective. He has also convinced me to get to the point quickly. My point: buy this book. As Chambers says, "If you spend as little as an hour a day writing, think of yourself as a professional writer." This book will make you better at your job!
