Book Description
Why is it that the average business captures less than 20 percent of its potential? Why is this underperformance so pervasive, and what's keeping these organizations from truly maximizing their shareholder value?
Based on extensive research and featuring case studies, tools, and practical techniques, this practical handbook explains how all strategic decisions must be considered from four closely integrated perspectives: that of the business model, the company's portfolio of holdings, its financial structure, and the efficiency and efficacy of its management and operations. The book presents a step-by-step methodology for implementing a Value Structure System, enabling readers to identify, create, and capture the maximum value of their company by synchronizing the different essential components. Readers will learn how to:
* Use a single value measure throughout all decision making * Immediately execute their own Value Structure Optimization (VSO) program * Perform diagnostic exercises quantifying risk, and prepare immediate action plans
Customer Reviews:
Excellent on corporate strategy.......2007-06-29
I have worked with both Dr. Manganelli and Dr. Hagen in professional context and highly recommend both their work and this book to those interested in a more tangible understanding of how top corporate strategy are created, analyzed, and communicated - particularly at the "C-level" for the public company.
Strategy Done Right = Value.......2004-05-20
"Solving the Corporate Value Enigma" concisely outlines the importance of appropriate strategic planning in creating and capturing value in a corporation. I found the book easy to read and well organized, ultimately leading to a very practical and useful tool. Something that many business books fail to accomplish.
The author's methodogy for implementation provided a "real world" game plan that I will be able put into practice. Save the $40,000 business school fee, buy this book!
From Theory To Practice.......2003-05-30
As both a practitioner and an educator, I found that "Solving the Corporate Value Enigma" provided the right mix of theory and practice. The authors have road-tested their tools with scores of corporate clients over twenty years and then validated/refined their hypotheses through hundreds of senior-level corporate interviews in a two year period. They provide a series of tools and a methodology (The "Turbo" Launch Program) that managers can use by themselves, or with help, to start with a minimal application of resources to see immediate results. A learning organization will embrace the findings from these low risk pilot projects and apply resources surgically throughout the organization to see a directly-attributable increase in shareholder value. They boldly address the concept of corporate risk head-on - and provide a structure for the conversations that need to occur to address it systematically.

good.......2007-10-08
but i do not encounter any problems from this book in the test at all.
Just practice nothing else.......2007-10-02
The questions I thought were really basic atleast the first 100. There are only a few tricky ones. It might give a false sense of expertise in GMAT math. But if you are looking for just practice it gives the range of questions.
Excellent practice.......2007-07-30
While I did not compare this with other guide books, as some reviewers have, I did use it to prepare for the GMAT. There are tons of questions, their answers and explanations for the answers. There is also a good section on how to approach the analytical writing section of the GMAT. This book complements the Official guide 11th edition.
If I were to have to take the GMAT again, I would buy this book again.
I scored 90% Overall.
Great book.......2007-07-12
You should definitely make this a part of your study plan. The book was extremely helpful to me. I found it to be an excellent refresher. The explanations in the answers were great.
I found this to be VERY helpful.......2007-06-01
While I did not compare this with other guide books, like some reviewers have, I did use it to prepare for the GMAT. There are hundreds of sample problems and the solutions and HOW the solution was arrived at.
When I took the exam, there were no problems that were in a format I had not seen. Naturally, they were different, but the TYPES of problems had all been explained in the book.
If - for some insane reason - I were to have to take the GMAT again, I would buy this book again.
PS: I scored 90% on the quantitative (woohoo!)
Book Description
With the advance of computing technology, Monte Carlo simulation research has become increasingly popular among quantitative researchers in a variety of disciplines. More and more, statistical methods are being subjected to rigorous empirical scrutiny in the form of statistical simulation so that their limitations and strengths can be understood. With the combination of powerful built-in statistical procedures and versatile programming capabilities, the SAS System is ideal for conducting Monte Carlo simulation research! SAS for Monte Carlo Studies: A Guide for Quantitative Researchers provides a detailed and practical guide for conducting Monte Carlo studies using the SAS System. Quantitative researchers will find this book attractive for its practicality and for its many hands-on application examples of Monte Carlo research.
Customer Reviews:
Extremely Helpful.......2007-09-13
I found this book extremely helpful for handling stochasticity with SAS/STAT environment. I have been working on spreadsheets (simulation add-ins) until now for financial modeling but obviously Excel has got limits. SAS has got the best of both worlds - you can write codes for advanced statistics and model a project capturing stochastic and deterministic variables which is why it is better choice than VBA+Excel+Add-ins(like @RISK). Apart from that book is very well written. It is always a pleasure to read scripts of creators themselves. For people in finance this is very helpful if purchased alongwith 'Using SAS in Financial Research'.
An appealing introduction for beginners.......2007-02-19
Do you know how to generate a (univariate) random normal sample in SAS? How about a sample from the multivariate normal distribution, with an arbitrary correlation matix? How about a sample from gamma, or Poisson distribution, or random variates with given 3rd and 4th moments? How about generating an ARMA series?
If not, the authors will show you how, and provide many examples. If you do, $40 can find better application. Speaking for myself, I was hoping to see a SAS-aided discussion of 'smart' MC techniques, and perhaps of resampling methods. No luck.
Concise and helpful.......2006-09-15
SAS is still the dominant programming tool in finance despite strong competition from other software packages like Maple and Mathematica. And it remains so despite it being embedded in the paradigm of procedural programming, while these other two packages are representatives of the functional approach to programming. Taste and historical precedence play a large role in the selection of a programming tool, and no doubt part of the reasons for the predominance of SAS. But whatever the reason, SAS is here to stay in the financial community, and of course so are Monte Carlo simulations, which are the topic of this short guide.
As the authors of this book show, Monte Carlo simulations are quite easy to implement in SAS, and one will find within its covers many examples of how to code these simulations in SAS. Due to its date of publication, the code of course reflects an earlier version of SAS, but the differences between it and the current version are small and can be dealt with for the purposes at hand. Monte Carlo simulations have the advantage of being conceptually simple but can take long periods of time to complete. They are usually used to get an understanding of the true population when real data is unavailable or expensive to obtain. There are a few firms on Wall Street that have made it their living to offer packages that allow more "intelligent" implementations of Monte Carlo. These approaches are proprietary of course but are no doubt based on some unique approach to doing variance reduction or importance sampling. One will not find examples of these implementations in this book, but there is plenty of material to keep one busy if one is learning Monte Carlo or SAS, or both, or if one is an expert on Monte Carlo and is teaching it to a class of SAS users. The examples included are straightforward and relatively error free, and one can be readily put into SAS or modified as one sees fit.

Revew of guide.......2007-01-10
The book was very helpfull. Covered most of the topics covered in class. Very self explanitory text and very easy to understand.
Great, but wait a minute please........2005-10-15
I gave this book 5 stars because it explains different topics based on electrochemistry, pH, precipitation, potentiometry, etc., and how they relate amongst themselves. The book really gets deep and provides plenty of examples and exercises to master the topics.
That was the good part, now I have to tell you that paying as much time as this book requires is not worth it. I have worked as an Analytical Chemist for three years where I have always been searching which technologies most laboratories and companies use. I also got a M.S. in the field and have taken a deep look at the job market around the world. After all this experiences, I hardly find a place where they would ask more than just taking pH of samples and some titrations that do not require the deep knowledge of this book. It is High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Gas Chromatography (GC), Atomic Absorption (AA) and spectroscopy (especially UV/Vis) the ruling technologies.
For some reason the academic communities have been really careless about the skills chemistry students need in analytical labs. Most analytical chemistry book deal deeply with electrochemistry topics and most schools have students study them rather deep. The chromatographic techniques are not usually given the importance they require. They regard them easy topics and too many books that do mention HPLC and GC cover too much on equilibrium theory and more useless topics. And the same academic communities are rather incongruent because too much electrochemistry is not very useful in the chemistry subject GRE.
Not so good for graduate exams.......2005-05-04
If you are looking for a means to review for a graduate school exam in analytical chemistry, look elsewhere. The material covered in an undergraduate general chemistry textbook is much better for review purposes. For those actually taking the class, I cannot comment on this books' utility.
If you're psyched to learn chemistry..........2000-11-04
I own many, many Schaum's Outlines, and am satisfied with all of them. However, before you buy this outline of Analytical Chemistry or any of the other Schaum's Outlines, you need to ask yourself what your needs are. If you are looking for a brief review of a subject, you should look elsewhere. If you are taking a course in Analytical Chemistry and need a little help with some areas of it, you should look elsewhere--preferably, ask someone with a thorough grasp of the subject to explain those areas to you.
The Schaum's Outlines are best used as a self-study tool. Let's face it, reviewing an entire subject and solving all the problems to gain a solid grasp on the material is difficult and time-consuming, and I suspect few students already enrolled in a course will have the extra time to rehash what they've already been told by reading through a Schaum's Outline, and few will want to go through so many problems--at least in my courses, the problems we are provided are too much to begin with.
For review purposes, Schaum's may help some students. However, since you need to know what your course will test you on specifically, you would need to go through the outline along with your notes. Therefore, spending more time reviewing your course notes might be a better use of your time.
Schaum's Outlines are essentially cheaply made textbooks, and, as with other texts, the writing varies widely from one book in the series to another. If a cheap self-study of a course is what you seek, or you'd like to preview a course you plan to take, by all means go with Schaum's. If you are a student looking for help with a subject, seek it elsewhere.
Analytical Chemistry made easy.......2000-06-13
The book explains all the concepts regarding analytical chemistry in a very lucid manner, which makes it a very easy to understand book. The way in which the book deals with the problems in analytical chemistry is noteworthy. If only the coverage would have been deeper my rating would have been 5 star.Still a must read book for who want to get started and get a feel of problems related to the subject of analytical chemistry.

Customer Reviews:
It has some errors........2007-05-30
I am studying using this book, to practice for my GRE general exam, and at the beginning, I though the book is good because it has 501 questions in a quantitative Comparison style, but when I started to solve the problems and practice using a paper and pencil, I found an error, which is not a printing error,it's a mathematics error, so I stopped practicing with that book because one error mathmetically is enough for me.
The error is on page 27, question 127:
a is a positive integer
1/ (a)^7 1/ (a)^10
According to the book, the answer is ( A ), and that's because the fraction in column A is larger than the fraction in column B.
The problem is, if we considered the value ( 0 ), zero, for (a), we will have equal values both in column A and Column B, so that means the answer will be ( C ).
And since we have different answers, one is ( A ), as the book has mentioned, and the other is ( C ), then the correct answer must be ( D ).
I don't recommend to spend your money on a book that contains errors.
Best regards.
