Book Description

A no-holds-barred look at the shortcomings in today's financial reporting standardswith a prescriptive program for change

Financial reports today have become hopelessly complex, and impossible for investors and other capital markets professionals to understand. This hurts everyone involved.

Quality Financial Reporting outlines the rules for QFR, a financial reporting revolutionin which essential figures are reported clearly, truthfully, and in a language that everyone can understand.

Quality Financial Reporting is groundbreaking in its theory, comprehensive in its presentation, and destined to become required reading for accountants and investors alike. A long-overdue recipe for change, it provides readers with:

"Accounting is the language of business. In recent years, too often language has been distorted to the point of becoming unintelligible. This book is a step toward restoring its usefulness."

Warren Buffet

Paul R. Bahnson is an associate professor of accounting at Boise State University.

5 out of 5 stars Focus investor must read!.......2003-01-03

I believe all of us would agree that GAAP in its current form has many problems accurately reporting the truth regarding a company's financial picture to the users of financial statements. An excellent book entitled "Quality Financial Reporting" should be required reading for all focus investors as it provides an impressive overview of what is wrong with GAAP, why FASB has been unable to function properly, and suggests possible solutions.

The authors are straight shooters and as such I think they will find no friends among the accounting "establishment" but they certainly point out the flaws in GAAP thereby helping focus investors better understand the financial statements they are examining.

4 out of 5 stars A Refreshing Twist on Financial Reporting Shortcomings.......2002-12-05

The strength of the book is that it is easily understandable for the layman, but lays out financial reporting issues and logical directions to proceed for the accounting and financial reporting community. I hope it causes a stir.I also found it very entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars Not for everyone.......2005-02-04

Materials are technical and explanations are skimpy. Some cases are excellent but most of exercises are just too mechanical. This book is for advanced courses for real accountants. In my opinion, not suitable for general MBAs.

5 out of 5 stars Great Fun to Teach.......2004-01-03

Here is a secret: the study or practice or accounting may be tedious, but the teaching of accounting is fun. It's about money, power, greed, betrayal -- what's not to like? More particularly, it is one of those courses where students come in bearing such low expectations thaqt their only surprises will be pleasant.

Of all the accounting materials I've been exposed to, none is more fun to teach than this book by Brownlee, Ferris and Haskins. There is an introductory chaper of nuts and bolts. But then, the bulk of the book is made up of case studies in accounting analysis. With bright students (I use it with second- or third-year law students), you can do a whole course from the standing start.

Whenever I teach accounting, I tend to treat it as a "fraud" course--try to find the gimmick. In general, students are uncomfortable with the approach. They tend to think of accountants as nice people and their a not always happy with my seeming cynicism. Post-Enron (and WorldComm, and Adelphia, and Parmalat, etc. etc., etc.), I am tempted to call up all my former students and say -- "See? I was right all along." Meanwhile, it is wonderful to watch the student puzzle over a Brownlee problem and then say (as if with a flash of insight) -- "But that's wrong!" And of course the answer is: "That's why it's in the book."

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book........2000-08-26

This is an extremely well-written and thoughtful book. The authors take a highly practical and rigorous look at accounting as used in practice by publicly-traded companies. It is an effective integration of accounting principles and real-world financial statement analysis -- helps the reader develop a sense of what is aggressive, what is conservative, etc., and what critical issues are discernible but not immediately obvious from a routine examination of financial statements. A good read for would-be Ben Inkers. For a more basic introduction to accounting, check out books by Robert Anthony.

Book Description

As Six Sigma and Lean Enterprise techniques continue to evolve and become more and more engrained in the business, it is harder and harder to track the impact of savings on a project by project basis. Especially when you have more than one project concentrating on different functional areas, through the use of case studies, worked out examples, and bench marking techniques, Michael Bremer, a Senior Instructor at Motorola University, helps you to put the right infrastructure in place for project identification, project scoping, and financial reporting.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money........2006-10-09

This book is horrible. I'm using it in my advanced accounting class right now and all I can say is that this book is a waste of time. Its exercises are backwards, not in any form you'd ever run accross in the real world. There's no explanation for the topics. You're thrown into the book expected to know all of the information it presents. If this information is new to you you'll need another accounting book anyways. Save your money and just buy a nice, well written text book.

5 out of 5 stars It's a great book with very useful examples!.......1998-11-12

      Description:
We assess the conditions under which auditor resignations reduce uncertainty about the quality of financial reporting of former and continuing clients of the resigning auditor. Our analysis is based on a sample of 109 auditor resignations in the period 1994-1998. Approximately one-quarter of these resignation announcements are accompanied by disclosure of a disagreement over accounting treatment or over the adequacy of internal controls-factors that point toward diminished credibility of former client's financial statements-and are associated with negative abnormal returns for the former client. In contrast, we find no stock market effect for the remaining firms (i.e., three-quarters of our sample) for which the auditor resignations are ''unexplained'', suggesting that the act of resignation, by itself, is not informative. Further, we find that these unexplained resignations, which likely result from auditors' periodic risk-related reviews of their client portfolios, transfer value-relevant information to another class of investors. In particular, we find that industry matched continuing clients of the auditor that also have poor performance experience positive abnormal returns in the days surrounding media-announced resignations from former clients. This suggests that in an environment where poorly performing, high-risk audit clients are screened contemporaneously, an auditor's unexplained resignation from one client, but not from a similar client in its portfolio, helps reduce uncertainty about the credibility of continuing clients' financial reporting.

            Description:
This study extends prior research on the use of the Internet for investor relations (IR) activities by investigating the quality determinants of IR websites. Detailed data on IR website characteristics were collected for 270 companies located in six countries (Australia, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, South Africa and the UK). The results of the descriptive part of this study show that the IR section of its website is an established element in a company's Internet presence as, on average, over half of the 29 IR characteristics were found on the corporate websites. Based on the univariate and multivariate analysis, the variables proxying for company size, level of internationalization (foreign listing and foreign revenue), proportion of shares available to individual investors and disclosure environment are significantly related to the extent of IR activities on the Internet. Also, evidence is found of a significant effect for the level of technology (industry) and the growth rate (ratio of market value to book value) of a company, an effect which for both variables is negative. The results of the study indicate that studies on the use of the Internet for IR activities may benefit from the use of a detailed measure of website quality.

              Description:
There is a consensus that the business reporting model needs to expand to serve the changing information needs of the market and provide the information required for enhanced corporate transparency and accountability. Worldwide, regulators view narrative disclosures as the key to achieving the desired step-change in the quality of corporate reporting. In recent years, accounting researchers have increasingly focused their efforts on investigating disclosure and it is now recognised that there is an urgent need to develop disclosure metrics to facilitate research into voluntary disclosure and quality [Core, J. E. (2001). A review of the empirical disclosure literature. Journal of Accounting and Economics, 31(3), 441-456]. This paper responds to this call and contributes in two principal ways. First, the paper introduces to the academic literature a comprehensive four-dimensional framework for the holistic content analysis of accounting narratives and presents a computer-assisted methodology for implementing this framework. This procedure provides a rich descriptive profile of a company's narrative disclosures based on the coding of topic and three type attributes. Second, the paper explores the complex concept of quality, and the problematic nature of quality measurement. It makes a preliminary attempt to identify some of the attributes of quality (such as relative amount of disclosure and topic spread), suggests observable proxies for these and offers a tentative summary measure of disclosure quality.

5 out of 5 stars Tackles complex issues simply, well integrated with course.......2005-04-20

I am an MBA student who has used this course book for our first year operations class. The book tackles difficult topics in a very easy to read way and is extremely well integrated with the associated case book and lecture notes. It provides the right level of detail, enabling students to pick up the tools or delve more deeply into the underlying mathematical constructs. The book does what it says on the label, teaching how to match supply with demand through analyzing process bottlenecks, queuing, lost customers, optimal inventory and yield management and supply chain management issues, such as the bull-whip effect and tackling double marginalization. This is a great introductory book to operations management.

5 out of 5 stars A fun, useful and interesting book to learn operation mgmt .......2005-04-18

I am currently attending an MBA program and we are using this book in one of our operations classes. Highly recommend this book to schools and students who would like to learn how to solve the supply and demand problem!

First, this book is very easy to read. Throughout the book, the authors used different examples to illustrate the various challenges in realistic settings such as the patient waiting and serving time at the interventional radiology unit. The readers can easily extend and relate the examples in real life.

Second, this book is good for the classroom setting as well as the self study setting. The book is organized in a way that each chapter is focused on one operations management problem and shows the systematic ways to solve the problem. For self learner, one can easily select the topics and chapters of his/her interest.

Also, I found the summary at the end of each chapter especially useful for me. To prepare my exams, I use the summary of key notions and equations in each chapter to make up my "cheat sheet".

Again, "Matching Supply with Demand" is a great book and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, useful and very well written.......2005-04-04

I found this text book to be extremely helpful in understand and applying operations management. It includes a comprehensive introduction into topics like process flow, estimating and reducing labor costs, batching, the impact of variability, projecting uncertain demand, reactive capacity, risk pooling and several others.

More importantly, the models and examples used are not only practical, but actually interesting. Class discussions were drastically improved due to an increased interest in the cases. I'm sure it took a monumental effort to develop models and cases that make Operations Management interesting to the common student.

              5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2005-04-03

Used this book in the core MBA course - excellent summary of class lectures & very helpful supplement.

A fantastic book for operations management!

The book cleverly combines real-life examples with relevant concepts to introduce core principles in operations managmenet.

                Customer Reviews:

                1 out of 5 stars Useless!!!.......2007-04-15

First and foremost, be aware if there are any reviews referring to "textbook", they are not for this "Cram 101 Textbook Outlines" which is supposed to be a textbook companion.

"Cram 101 Textbook Outlines" is useless!!! This is nothing but a bunch of glossary. And a half of the book is blank for writing notes. What a rip-off!!!
There's no outlines at all. No chapter summaries, no
                explanation of concepts. Totally useless.

I have used "Collins College Outlines" series (I rate them 3 stars) and "Barron's Business Reviews" series (I rate them 5 stars).

Never buy any of "Cram 101 Textbook Outlines" series.

Technical notes: "Cram 101 Textbook Outlines" is POD (Print on demand). No wonder quality of printing is inferior (Looks like a xerox copy). And priced too high for this quality. For those who are not familiar with publishing industry--POD is used for ultra small quantity less than 100 copies. This is a telltale sign that book is not expected to sell minimum quantity (usually 3,000 copies) that commercial publisher is willing to
commit to publish. Simply put, POD means inferrior and
overpriced books. A work of amateur.

1 out of 5 stars sad to say but possibly the worst product I've ever bought!!.......2007-02-25

                I LOVE the textbook. Fantastic!

But this is NOT the textbook. It's an inferior Cliffs-notes (not Cliff notes :) type product that's just a very long glossary of terms from the book. That's it!

No formulas, no flow charts, nothing like that! You will NOT learn what you need to learn by buying this product.

Contrary to how it's listed on Amazon, neither of the authors of the textbook appear to have had any involvement in the creation of this product. The book is uncredited--"An Academic Internet Publishers (AIPI) publication." Hey, I don't blame the person or people who made this product; I wouldn't want my name associated with it.
I was sorely disappointed and urge you to not buy it.
