Customer Reviews:
Too shallow to be of any real use.......2001-10-10
Personally, I ordered this book because I wanted to learn more about the inner workings and the behind-the-scenes aspect of the futures markets. However, despite the title, the book offers very little information about how the Futures markets actually work.
A Textbook for the Futures Markets.......2001-07-03
This book does not attempt to convince an unsuspecting or uninformed reader to trade futures. Nor does it form an opinion about whether investment in the futures markets is "good" or "bad". Instead, it arms the reader with enough information to make an informed, intelligent decision about whether or not to trade futures.
This is a textbook. It provides an objective, base-level understanding of the futures markets, including: the history of the futures contract, the purpose of the Futures Exchange, how to chose a broker, market forces affecting futures prices, and trading strategies. You will not necessarily be able to jump right into futures trading after reading this book, but you will have acquired a firm foundation on which to become more informed should you wish to do so.
This book works towards leveling the playing field in the investment community, something much needed. Void of marketing and sales hype, this book provides a refreshing, candid, and honest description of what should be expected from trading futures, both from the market and from you as a futures trader.
The most important chapter in this book is chapter 9: "The Psychology of Investing". Mr. Bernstein makes it very clear, there is no quick way to achieving success as a futures trader and that success will most like be achieved based not on our trading system but rather by our ability - as people - to properly implement our trading system. This chapter alone makes the book a worthwhile purchase.

Purchasing Performance Measurements (Purchasing Excellence Series)
Mel Pilachowski Manufacturer: PT Publications Inc ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0945456212 |
Book Description
Purchasing Performance Measurements is the first in a series of comprehensive guides to critical areas in Purchasing. Read this book to learn how to maintain your competitive edge and to use measurements to continuously improve. Just the facts.Purchasing Performance Measurements covers the following: How to implement and why.
Traditional accounting practices fail to pinpoint troubles which are eating away at profit margins and providing an opportunity for the competition to capture market share.
Traditional accounting practices fail to identify recovery opportunities in a company. They also overlook the real (root) causes of waste as well as cost reduction through the elimination of non-value-added activities or the improvement of value-added activities.
Traditional accounting practices favor quick fixes to reduce costs either by reducing labor or by forcing suppliers to cut costs. These actions not only avoid internal issues of waste, continuous improvement, and the identification of true cost drivers and misallocated costs, but can create even more intractable problems via the neglect.
Avoidance is a big issue here and it reminds us of weeds in our lawns. Cutting them off at the surface only temporarily hides the problem. To eliminate weeds, you need to get at the roots and pull them out of the ground. Only then can you produce a healthier lawn. The same thing applies to our businesses. We need the tools to get at the roots and we need a cost management system that lets us use these tools to their full advantage.
Just-In-Time, Total Quality Management, Statistical Process Control, Set-Up Reduction, Bar Coding, Team Building and Supplier Certification are a few of these new tools. In our consulting work, we have seen them help put companies back on their feet and on their way to prosperity. But, we have also noticed that the greatest success comes when these tools are used in the context of a total cost system which looks to continuously improve performance by eliminating waste and reducing costs. The principal method whereby this happens is to assign each product its true share of activity costs and not to lump all costs which are not directly traceable into overhead which is then inaccurately allocated to products based on direct labor costs. This is the way we used to do product costing, but it is no longer a viable method. Let's take a look at some manufacturing history to see why.
The History of Costs in Manufacturing: Business Performance Grid.
How to understand the relationship between measurements and Just-In- Time/Total Quality Control
A Total Cost Approach.
How to gain management's commitment and support.
Use this book to gain the competitive edge you need to stay ahead of the competition.

Handbook of Material and Capacity Requirements Planning
Howard W. Oden , Gary Langenwalter , and Raymond Lucier Manufacturer: McGraw-Hill ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0070479097 |
Book Description
This step-by-step handbook gives production and inventory managers the tools they need to choose and implement an optimal materials and capacity requirements planning (MCRP) system that helps reduce costs, increase sales, and improve their firm's competitive position. At the same time, it fully prepares readers to pass the materials and capacity requirements certification exam given by the American Production and Inventory Control Society (APICS). After discussing the basics of inventory and capacity control, MCRP, and bills of material, it focuses on advanced techniques and practices, including the information systems aspects of MCRP, and how MCRP interfaces with organizational functions, including customer service, communications, inventory levels, and vendor negotiations.Customer Reviews:
Keys to understanding ERP.......2002-07-14
First, this book thoroughly describes materials management, workflow and production capacity, and does so in a clear manner. I especially appreciate the fact that the authors take pains to define and explain every term and concept that they introduce. This is a refreshing change from many book in which assumptions about the reader's knowledge is made, which often leads to frustration or misunderstanding. It also removes any ambiguity and ensures that terms that can have multiple meaning are placed into their proper context.
Second, some of the material is out of date. For example the cited limitations of MRP software applications that existed when this book was written in 1993 have long since been rectified in the newer ERP packages from SAP, Baan and J.D. Edwards. However, even in the obviously out-of-date sections of this book are hidden gems, such as the Class ABCD System that was first developed by Oliver Wright as a means of classifying the maturity of MRP implementations based on answers to a 35 question checklist. This checklist can be applied with virtually no modification to ERP systems. Other gems include the way the authors distill major concepts into their salient points, such as TQM, and show how they relate to MRP, again, the same comparisons can be applied to ERP.
The best thing about this book, however, is the detailed treatment of inventory control, materials requirements management, capacity planning and workflow - all of which are as integral to ERP as they are to the older MRP systems that this book describes. As you read this book you will gain an intimate knowledge of how everything works and fits together instead of a high-level conceptual understanding. That, in my opinion, is the best reason to get this book and thoroughly read it. In addition to this book I also recommend "Manufacturing Data Structures: Building Foundations for Excellence With Bills of Materials and Process Information" by Jerry Clement, John Sari and Andy Coldrick. That book adds the information systems perspective that is based on modern ERP systems and seamlessly augments the material in this book.
