Due to the ability to handle specific characteristics of economics and finance forecasting problems like e.g. non-linear relationships, behavioral changes, or knowledge-based domain segmentation, we have recently witnessed a phenomenal growth of the application of computational intelligence methodologies in this field.
In this volume, Chen and Wang collected not just works on traditional computational intelligence approaches like fuzzy logic, neural networks, and genetic algorithms, but also examples for more recent technologies like e.g. rough sets, support vector machines, wavelets, or ant algorithms. After an introductory chapter with a structural description of all the methodologies, the subsequent parts describe novel applications of these to typical economics and finance problems like business forecasting, currency crisis discrimination, foreign exchange markets, or stock markets behavior.

An organization is more than the sum of its parts, and the individual components that function as a complex social system can be understood only by analyzing their collective behavior. This book shows how state-of-the-art simulation methods, including genetic algorithms, neural networks, and cellular automata, can be brought to bear on central problems of organizational theory related to the emergence, permanence, and dissolution of hierarchical macrostructures. The emphasis is on the application of a new generation of equation- and agent-based computational models that can help students of organizations to reformulate their basic research questions starting from assumptions about how to link--rather than separate--different levels of organizational analysis.

Lomi and Larsen recruited an outstanding set of authors to explain and apply a new generation of agent-based computational models to the problem of organizational change. Using state-of-the-art simulation methods, with clear explanations and superior examples, the various chapters show how principles from genetic algorithms, neural networks, and cellular automata can be applied to the emergence, persistence, and disbanding of organizations (and other hierarchical macrostructures). I particularly liked their well-considered decision to emphasize multiple levels of analysis within the same models. This is a sourcebook that advanced students of organization studies should have on their shelf.

The book provides a sound yet practical introduction to the intersection of three fields operation research, Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support Sytems. The book is based on effective use of constraint logic programming paradigm. There is an associated software package for 2LP language with models and solutions. 2LP is combination of Linear programming and Logic programming. The power of simplex algorithm is used in theorem prover . The language constructs resemble C++; The book is primarily written to show the power of the language in solving various problems; scheduling, pattern recognition, puzzzle solving, assignment problem, task allocation, time table problem, etc. The book does not the discuss about the programming theory in design of the language. The authors discuss about various theoritical aspects of OR and AI. Each cahpter introduces one concept and its relevance explained with some concrete models. All models and solutions are part of the software package. Very good book.

Chen, Jain, and Tai bring together a variety of interesting applications of computational intelligence approaches in their edited Computational Economics: A Perspective from Computational Intelligence book. Contributions in this volume show how combinations of neural networks, genetic algorithms, wavelets, fuzzy sets, and agent-based modeling are utilized in solving a host of managerial decision-making problems. The volume is rich with applications in financial modeling, option pricing, market-making, optimization of market strategies, optimization for traffic policy, cost estimation, policy appraisal in a criminal justice system, capital control, and solving organization theory problems.

Book Description
Computational intelligence (CI), as an alternative to statistical and econometric approaches, has been applied to a wide range of economics and finance problems in recent years, for example to price forecasting and market efficiency.
This book contains research ranging from applications in financial markets and business administration to various economics problems. Not only are empirical studies utilizing various CI algorithms presented, but so also are theoretical models based on computational methods. In addition to direct applications of computational intelligence, readers can also observe how these methods are combined with conventional analytical methods such as statistical and econometric models to yield preferred results.
Chen, Wang, and Kuo have grouped the 12 contributions following their introductory chapter into applications of fuzzy logic, neural networks (including self-organizing maps and support vector machines), and evolutionary computation. All chapters were selected either by invitation or based on a careful selection and extension of best papers from the International Workshop on Computational Intelligence in Economics and Finance in 2005. Overall, the book offers researchers an excellent overview of current advances and applications of computational intelligence techniques to economics and finance problems.
