5 out of 5 stars Excellent Text Book For Accounting.......2004-10-04

I used this book for an on-line class. The general ledger software was so helpful in reinforcing what the book teaches. I liked that many answers were given for the problems so you could see if you were making an error (sometimes the same one over and over!) so that you could figure out your mistake(s) and get to the correct answer. One of the best text books I have used.

    5 out of 5 stars Very helpful.......2004-02-26

I used this book in a class at Pasadena City College and it was quite helpful. I received an A in the course. I recommend that students who use this book look up the definition of the words since it is very helpful on the quizes and tests. To professors -- this book is sometimes ambiguous on some concepts and could do a better job at it, but overall it is a good textbook to use.

4 out of 5 stars College Accounting by McQuaig et al........2003-07-17

The work is a complete rendition in applied accounting. It is
geared for the average college student. This version is
best-suited for a two-term or 6 credit course in accounting
or an accounting with lab course. There is good treatment
of the fundamental rules of accounting with ample examples
and homework problems. The work is scarce on theory.
Therefore, the instructor should supplement this version of the
book with a textbook for majors in accounting. In addition,
the author publishes a smaller text with fewer chapters.
This text is heavy and a bit unwieldy to carry to class.
The upper echelon of the class did very well with this text.
In fact, the class average was a "B" over 8+ sections of
my students. If your class roster is very large, I would
consider segmenting the class into advanced placement,
mid-quartile and lower-quartile students. It is tough
to cover this text in a single semester while teaching
marginal and advanced students in the same class.

5 out of 5 stars Makes the tedium much easier.......2007-06-08

The CD contains many items that make doing the problems in the book much easier, particularly a lot of excel templates that are specific to particular problems. There are also valuable powerpoint presentations and explanatory documents that make the learning easier. There is a computerized general ledger system on the CD that allows the student to work with and automated system, similar to what would be encountered in the workplace. Learning how to do thing by 'hand' is a necessary part of accounting but this system shows how valuable the automated systems are. I highly recommend this product.

                    Book Description

Leadership development is one of the most critical needs of any organization. With Baby Boomers starting to retire, where will new leaders come from? How does a company make sure it has the "bench strength" to have the right leaders at the right time? This book offers a powerful and original approach to the challenge, covering strategic factors often overlooked in other books. These include how to:

                    * choose between growing talent from within and hiring outside people * create and execute talent strategies to maximize organizational effectiveness * hire a Chief Talent Officer, a position increasingly found at forward-looking companies * use "war-game" scenarios to test strategies and correct bad decisions quickly

Bench Strength offers specific, step-by-step guidelines for developing every aspect of a winning strategy. Most important, it provides the action steps for making smart, realistic choices, and putting a talented and versatile team together--for today and for the future.

"This book provides all the right stuff if you're ready to get down to the hard work of strategic talent management. Take advantage of well thought out questions, challenges, and guidelines for designing and executing with confidence. Barner does a superb job." -- Janet S. Steinwedel, Ph.D., Director Leadership Coaching, AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals

"Follow this comprehensive, practical roadmap--complete with toolkit--to the land of an energized and high performance work environment." -- M. Cass Wheeler, CEO, American Heart Association

"This book serves as an insightful guide for both executives and development professionals. By presenting a balanced perspective of the different strategic approaches, it provides a thoughtful analysis of the options (and trade-offs) associated with implementing various leadership development initiatives. Organizations interested in attaining a competitive advantage through people (specifically a strong leadership team) will learn about the subtlety and creativity needed to do it right (one size does not fit all)." -- Christina D. Williams, Ph.D., Managing Director, RHR International

"P & L owners and HR practitioners alike will find this book easy to use and highly applicable to their joint cause of winning the sustained talent war. Barner's blend of cases, theory, models, and questions of self-discovery is a perfect balance." -- Samir Gupte, Vice President, Human Resources, Bahama Breeze

"Bob Barner presents a highly cogent and comprehensive guidebook for HR professionals, managers, and CEO's for building an effective talent strategy. Focusing on key talent decisions - 'Make versus Buy'/'Capstone versus Foundation'/'Build Out versus Trade-up' - this book brings clarity to the most vexing and perennial HR challenges, helping managers not only to understand the options they have but how to think through these choices and specifically when and how to respond. Distinctive throughout is the book's unwavering focus on business impact and alignment with business strategy." -- Jean Martin-Weinstein, Managing Director, Corporate Leadership Council

"Bench Strength is the only book on talent management I have read that is practical and actionable. Barner not only outlines a well-defined path for success, but also provides examples and experiences that bring the words and recommended actions to life. This book will be of immense value to any organization seeking to develop a talent management strategy that is aligned with and supports the business direction." -- Tracy South, Senior Vice President, Human Resources, Mosaic Sales Solutions

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and Comprehensive.......2006-07-02

Bench Strength is one of the most accessible books I've found on leadership and executive talent. I particularly find the graphics and summary charts appealing; I wish all authors would consider readers as much when dealing with the complexities of today's business challenges.

Anyone who yearns for a master plan on how to integrate talent strategy with business strategy in order to take his/her organization to the next level must get this book. Reading each chapter is akin to having a one-on-one coaching session with a 20-year veteran in organizational and management development (the author, Robert Barner).

Bench Strength has earned a prominent place on my bookshelf and is one of my favorite resources.

What is a learning organization? What are the advantages of creating one? Why should a company want to become a learning organization? Where does one start?

3 out of 5 stars Perspectives on Learning Organizations.......2002-07-19

As far as I can see it is a book all about different perspectives, a book that adds on to the list of books that focus on the theoretical and/or philosophical sides of learning organizations. As such it is a good book, with contributions from 40 acknowledged authors/researchers.
The book is built up around four parts:
                    - Guiding ideas
                    - Theories/Methods/Processes
                    - Infrastructure
                    - Arenas of Practice
The book is packed with lots of good ideas that may form a base for further exploration in the field. Most of it is well edited, even though there is some extra "fluff" in some of the articles.
It is a good introduction to "learning organizations", but I will hesitate to call it a "how-to"-book . . . .

4 out of 5 stars strong collection of essays.......2001-12-13

I've had to read a slew of leadership books for my doctorate -- as for a collection of thoughtful essays, this is one of the best. It's well organized, well laid out and has almost every major thinker represented. It's got theoretical parts, practical parts and questions for down the road. The essays span all types of learning organizations: schools, hospitals, companies, etc... It's a bit long, but if you take it piece by piece, this is a very enjoyable and informative collection. Highly recommended and well-conceived.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent combination of ideas, theory, and practice!.......1999-09-23

What is a learning organization? What are the principles upon which a learning organization is built? What is needed to develop a culture that embraces these principles? The concept of the learning organization began several decades ago, but only recently has it gained widespread recognition among business people and academics alike. This is in part due to the success of Peter Senge's 1990 book The Fifth Discipline and his pragmatic, step-by-step guide, The Fifth Discipline Fieldbook (1994).

Thirty-nine of the most respected scholars and practitioners come together to share a comprehensive explanation of the ideas, principles, attitudes, skills, systems, and infrastructure needed to create the ideal workplace of the future. Authors including MIT's Fred Kofman and Peter Senge, Harvard's Rosabeth Kanter, and London Business School's Charles Handy are recognized worldwide for their work in teaching organizations about change, systems thinking, organizational development, diversity, and total quality management.

The author's essays are categorized into five main parts. Part One: Guiding Ideas primes our intellect by posing questions and sharing ideas about what learning organizations represent. Part Two: Theories/Methods/Processes presents how stories, dialogue, coaching, systems thinking, and other learning tools facilitate the creation of learning organizations. Part Three: Infrastructure identifies some of the ways we must change what we do to achieve maximum learning potential. Part Four: Arenas of Practice identifies various workplaces and takes a look at how to build learning organizations within them. Case studies are used to describe how learning organizations are working in various organizational settings.

This book is written for practitioners, scholars, and active participants of adult learning environments. The principles and practices can apply to any organization that wishes to increase its learning potential, including businesses, schools, health care, and governmental organizations.

The rate at which organizations and individuals learn must keep up with the ever-changing environment that surrounds them. This is a global environment that requires us to communicate and learn from our co-workers, customers, clients, competitors, investors, friends, and family. Our world is becoming increasingly interconnected and it would be prudent to take advantage of that fact. We are not islands and as such, we cannot learn alone. The more skilled we become at applying the breadth of knowledge and skills that are presented in this book on becoming a learning organization, the more prepared we will be for competing in the Knowledge Era.

                              Book Description

This book offers Ian Cunningham's pioneering approach - self managed learning which encourages the individual to devise their own learning program which leads to greater enthusiasm and ownership of development. For the organization, it has a strategic advantage in creating a more focused, active and committed team. This concept is backed by practical examples of application in organization.

4 out of 5 stars Places learning in the centre of business strategy.......1999-12-08

The two core themes in this book are:

learning as a strategic process for both the individual and the organisation, and

an approach that the author calls Self Managed Learning (SML) and distinguishes in great detail from other approaches to teaching and learning, while recognising similarities and overlaps.

The author makes a lot of use of 'I'. He insists that the views expressed are his own - and some of them are distinctly idiosyncratic. This adds to, rather than detracting from the quality of the book, because he also discusses other views in considerable detail. This helps to make the distinction between his prescription and those of others, in a field in which the terminology is decidedly 'muddy'. As an example, 'action learning' can be used to refer to anywhere up to half a dozen distinct training/learning approaches.

Right at the heart of his concern is learning how to learn. The specific program content of a program of learning and the techniques of learning employed are means to the end of becoming a skilled learner both as an individual and in relationship with others. What distinguishes his prescription is a consistent focus not simply on how well people learn marketing, quality management or whatever but on how the strategy and processes of learning combine to meet both immediate learning goals and improve learning capacity. He is primarily concerned with what is variously described as second order learning, 'reframing' or 'metalearning'.

Everyone engaged in organisational change and, in particular, in the difficult shift from a bureaucratic mind-set will find a great deal to think about. They will also encounter both challenges and useful ideas and tools.

For those who have read the first edition, the second edition adds a chapter on the learner in context, and has maintained and improved the sideline headings throughout the book. Other changes are relatively minor and certainly do not change the thrust of the argument.
