Book Description
You're not a still-wet-behind-the-ears Flash developer, but you're no pure-ActionScript wizard either: At last there's a book that addresses your needs as a budding Flash master. If you've mastered Flash basics and have a good understanding of animation, symbols, and basic ActionScript, this project-based tutorial from the folks at Lynda.com Training is the answer to your prayers. As you follow along with the book's exercises and the CD's QuickTime tutorials, you'll build an entire Web site in Flash--in the process exploring all of the intermediate-level Flash techniques that you've been dying to get your hands on. You'll learn how to dynamically load text and images, create scrollable text, build a preloader, add music and video, build a dynamic slide show, produce a feedback form, create a Flash plug-in detector, and more. Also covered are a slew of workflow enhancements, ActionScript 2.0--the improved ActionScript language introduced in Flash MX 2004--and more.

This Book Is "H.O.T.".......2007-05-06
Shane Rebenschied's Macromedia Flash MX 2004: Beyond the Basics Hands-On-Training (BTB:HOT) is the second book in a small series on teaching would-be developers how to effectively use Macromedia Flash in their web projects.
BTB:HOT is very well written. The author uses very clear instructions and appropriate graphics(screenshots) to illustrate the points being made. It is a very easy read, especially if you are weary of computer programming style books. The HOT series is written as if the instructor is standing beside you and telling you what you need to do.
This books was definitely written for the layman. This book was not written for someone who is looking to take Flash to the next level of professionalism. The book is very short (almost too short), and really doesn't include very much discussion about the possibilities that can happen with a particular project.
After reading this book and working through the examples, I determined that there really isn't anything new in this book that a seasoned web developer couldn't figure out after reading the first book in the series.
To finish, very good book, but just for novices.
Great!.......2006-07-22
This book is perfect for the transformation from beginning to intermediate. The tutorials are incredibly thorough plus it guides you through making a whole web site with the most practical functions. I highly recommend this book. I wish they would make more!
Good tutorial book on Flash.......2006-05-17
This is the first book on Flash and this is the first time I am learning Flash MX2004 Pro. So far I have gone through almost a half of the book and I am very pleased with how this book is structured and its CD which contains the project files as I am learning this program with this book. For any beginner, I feel this book will help get you started on learning and using Flash MX2004. I purchased this book's sister edition "Beyound the Basics" so that I can go one step further after I complete this book.
Good Intermediate Book, But Only Worth 3 Stars if You Can Program.......2006-03-02
Basically, this is a good book to get you from the initial HOT book on Flash to the more advanced tutorials found on the Macromedia Exchange site. The introduction to LoadVars and LoadMovieClip alone are worth the price of the book.
My only complaint, if you can call it that, would be that if you are coming from a programmer's background, you will skim A LOT of pages. You've got to hand it to the author in how he really takes his time introducing programming to the neophytes, but I found myself actually reading only 1 page out of every 3-6.
If you already know how to program in any language, you could probably find the tutorials online to get by without this book, but the expenditure in time probably wouldn't be worth the price of the book.
Written by a good teacher.......2006-01-06
Excellent book. The author has obviously taught classes and adopted a style that can be followed by any type of reader/student. If you are a novice you will have no trouble following each step-by-step lesson and learn the topics covered. When you are finished with the book your skill level will have improved.
If your skills are advanced or intermediate you will be able to get through each lesson quickly and learn another way of accomplishing something. The videos on the CD are good and delve deeper into the topics covered in the book.
One of the main goals of the book is to teach the concept of object oriented programming. As you go through the book you build a web site, or, better, an application that loads the different applications you learn about in the book, all tied together by a navigation section.
The use of winks and jokes may seem inappropriate to some, but it kept things light for me and I even laughed a couple of times.
I would recommend this book to anyone who needs to learn how to produce Flash applications. You must know the basics of Flash, and you will not learn about tying to databases or using XML or web services. This is why this is the perfect INTERMEDIATE Flash book.
Book Description
Are you already up to speed on the fundamentals of Dreamweaver? Do you know how create a simple Web site, fill it with text and graphics, add navigation and links, and test/post the final product? If so, you’re ready to move beyond the basics.
Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 Beyond the Basics is all about stepping up to that next level. This book expands your skill set with advanced coverage on integrating dynamic content in your Web sites. Through a series of carefully developed, step-by-step exercises and training movies, you will learn how to build a professional Web siteâusing source files and designs supplied on the book’s CD-ROM. Along the way, you'll find extensive coverage of all the program's new features: drag-and-drop integration of XML data feeds, improved CSS support, advanced style rendering toolbar, the industry’s first integrated Web accessibility evaluation tool for Section 508 and WCAG 2 checkpoints, and more!

Shoddy Editing.......2007-05-26
I've had a generally good experience with the Hands on Training series, but I wish I had read a few reviews before purchasing this one. I'm exactly the type of intermediate user that this title is aimed at, and there is plenty to learn from this book. But it is chock full of proofing errors, mistakes that an intermediate or advanced user can probably suss out and compensate for, but that a relative newcomer to DW or CSS could easily be stumped by. Most unforgiveable is the fact that there are errors in the exercise files - alignment and browser display problems, as well as inclusion of files that have already had the exercise steps performed on them - so that in order to to perform the exercise, you have to start at the end, undo all the steps, then perform them. The exercise files are the main reason to buy books in this series, so problems with those files are inexcusable.
Another shortcoming that intermediate users or below should be aware of: the author does a pretty poor job of giving a context and rationale for many of the procedures used in this book-another issue that makes this book a lot more work than it ought to be.
I'd advise anyone thinking of buying this book to look closely at something in the O'Reilly series - maybe the CSS or Website Cookbooks.
A Literary Classic!.......2007-05-13
This is a great read if you wish to go to sleep late at night. Okay, I am just kidding, but you know what you are getting into if you are buying this book and it delivers the goods! That's all folks...
Some excellent information, but errors (many of them critical) cannot be overlooked.......2007-01-23
I enjoyed this book thoroughly; I very much appreciated how much information Mr. Lowery tried to cover in a relatively small book. He attempts to bring in more advanced (from a beginner's standpoint) CSS techniques, XML, Ajax, and other topics to the discussion. But, there are many critical errors, both in the book and in the exercise files on the CD-ROM. The errata page for the book does try to make amends for the missing files for Exercise 3, but there are many other exercises that are partially completed or have critical errors which make them render improperly after you are done with the exercise. I am sure that some of the errors are on my part, but the fact there are so many prevalent mistakes and missteps is very disconcerting for someone who is just learning. I went through the first lynda.com Dreamweaver 8 book, and learned a lot. Unfortunately, this book was simply not as well edited.
Beyond the basics.......2007-01-09
Detail instructions giving for you to follow.Gives you more than the basics of dreamweaver.
Not for Intermediate nor Advanced.......2006-10-24
This book has so many faults! The CD that comes with the book does not work in many browsers. Sometimes the exercise files on the CD are already completed. They don't work either.
I have asked for help twice. The first time I was told the problems I identified would be added to the errata list. The second time I was told that the author would review the whole chapter and get back to me in two days. That was a week ago. Still no answers as to why things do not work!
Book Description
Knowing how to design effective training instruction is a core competency for every trainer. Here's a down to the basics title that keeps its focus on the bottom-line skills of the design craft beginning with planning and need analysis; to writing, designing, and evaluating course materials; to marketing and administration. This title also shows you how to put together quality, performance-based training that will be delivered in a classroom setting.
Book Description
It is a large industry, and it also is complicated. The function of other rooms in a house are defined by the room's furnishings, and those furnishings can be moved at will. A living room can be changed to a dinning room at any time, or a den to a home office, simply by moving the furnishings. The kitchen differs in that it must be both designed and installed. It is permanent, with permanent plumbing and wiring that must be fitted to it percisely.
Remodeling a kitchen, therefore, demands a special level of training for the designer/sales person who must combine many skills and several trades to merge the needs and budget of a client with the products and physical limitations of the space available.
Topics Covered In This Publication Include:
How to sell, plan and design kitchens;
Layout techniques;
Lighting, venting, plumbing, electrical and consruction basics;
Cabinets and countertops, what they're made of, how and where to use them;
Appliances, fixtures and fittings, types and design factors;
How to control the job and relate to the customer as a true professional.

Kitchen Basics, National Kitchen and Bath Association.......2005-02-25
I just bought this book from the National Kitchen and Bath Association website for $50 and the bookstore at my college sells it for $74. It is listed on Amazon for $121. Why the discrepancy in price?
a complete kitchen designer's need.......2001-10-14
Whoever would like to get this book: Be aware that this is
not a simple book. It is like a college textbook.It is very
technical. If you are building your own home and are not
knowledgable about kitchen details, and you are able to
have a professional kitchen designer design your kitchen,
by all means leave it up to them. But, if you are learning to
be an architect, or interior designer, or kitchen specialist,
or are simply fascinated by kitchen design, OR live outside
the U.S. when professional kitchen designers do not exist and
you want to be ABSOLUTELY SURE that the kitchen is properly
designed, this book is for you. It is the most comprehensive,
most wonderful book on the market (I must have bought half a
dozen other books) It's not enough to know about the kitchen triangle,
you have to know how long each leg has to be, how far a cooktop
must be from a window, how must space must be left on each
side of a stove top, sink, etc. (the only problem is, convincing your architect that you know what you're talking about).
In any case, good luck and enjoy the book.

I want to do inappropriate things to Mr. Rebenschied .......2005-06-22
This title is THAT good. Like another reviewer said, you may find the narration a bit slow, but if you hold down the FF button you can still understand him. If you've gotten through all the beginner stuff, this is a great next step to take.
Again, some people might find it slow, because he does a lot of hand holding through the exercises. However, if you aren't 100% on your ActionScript 2.0 skills yet, it might be just what you need to build your skills as well as your confidence as an AS programmer. That's exactly what it has done for me.
And if you REALLY want to get most out of this, get the "Beyond the Basics" book as well, and take your notes in there as you follow along.

Another great book from this publisher.......2007-02-14
I'm on chapter 10 of this book and I've only found one error so far, which is simply amazing (the preloader demo referred to in the book is missing from their web site, which is a trivial thing since it works perfectly using the files from the CD that comes with the book). Shane Rebenschied is thorough. He explains everything in detail, so that it is crystal clear. I own a couple other books by this publisher and both of them are as good as this one. I would highly recommend this book.
