Book Description
This detailed overview provides a solid, in-depth introduction to all major accounting information systems. The coverage is balanced and comprehensive, with many current examples of AIS in practice. A single business firm is also used throughout to illustrate concepts and techniques as they are covered. An accompanying CD-ROM includes a wealth of additional material and greater-depth coverage.
Customer Reviews:
One of the Best AIS Texts.......2003-03-29
I have used the fourth edition of this book, and it's one of the best AIS text books I have seen. It's concise, to the point, and informative. The fourth edition of this book gets the point across without being longwinded. Supplementary materials are included on a CD and can be accessed if needed or to supplement the text material. The problems are extremely useful. I highly recommend this text for use in accounting information systems classes.
An overkill textbook.......1999-05-12
As a textbook for an accounting systems class, this text is extremely cumbersome and long-winded. The authors seem to want to beat every subject to death, which results in excrutiatingly long chapters. Much of the material may be relevant to information systems majors taking it in a series of two classes, but is probably not suitable for an accounting major class. The writing style is boring and cryptic in many places. Look into the Gelinas/Sutton/Oram or Bodnar/Hopwood books for much better content and readability.
This is a university text book, not a reference book.......1997-11-10
I was looking for specialized information and I failed to understand that "Essential Concepts and Applications" meant just what it said: this is a university text book for students, and in this quality it certainly rates a high grade, (although I am not qualified to say if it rates $ 311), but as a reference book for professional in the field, it is useless: half of the book introduces essentials of computer technology, the other half essentials of accounting, but none in depth. I will be more careful in the future and can only lament the loss. However, as a study text book, it is probably very good.

Book Description
Updating the book since its last publication in 1985, this new edition of the landmark work on human resource accounting has been substantially revised to reflect the current state of the field through the late 1990s. The economies of many nations are increasingly dominated by knowledge- or information-based sectors driven by highly trained and specialized personnel. Whereas physical capital was of the utmost economic importance in the past, the distinctive feature of the emerging post-industrial economies is an increasing reliance on human and intellectual capital. The growing importance of human capital as a determinant of economic success at both the macroeconomic and microeconomic levels dictates that firms need to adjust to this new economic reality. Specifically, if human capital is a key determinant for organizational success, then investment in the training and development of employees to improve performance is a critical component of this success.
This broad socioeconomic shift underscores a growing need for measuring and analyzing human capital when making managerial and financial decisions. Yet important human resource decisions involving hiring, training, compensation, productivity and other matters are often made in the absence of specific information about the different costs and benefits of these particular choices. Human resource accounting is a managerial tool that can be used to gain this valuable information by measuring the costs of recruiting, hiring, compensating and training employees. It can be used to evaluate employee training programs, increase productivity, and improve managerial decision-making regarding promotions, transfers, layoffs, replacement and turnover. Case studies illustrate, for example:
- How an insurance company evaluated a training program for claims adjusters and found that it would return two dollars for every one dollar spent.
- How a human resources accounting study revealed that an electronics firm's losses from employee turnover equalled one year's new income, and how the company initiated a program to reduce turnovers.
The third edition presents the current state of the art of human resource accounting by (1) examining the concepts and methods of accounting for people as human resources; (2) explaining the present and potential uses of human resource accounting for human resource managers, line managers and investors; (3) describing the research, experiments and applications of human resource accounting in organizations; (4) considering the steps involved in developing a human resource accounting system; and (5) discussing some of the remaining aspects of human resource accounting that require further research.

management accouting for steve albrecht, et al.......2003-02-09
this text hasn't included solutions manual that's big trouble for student
Missing major material.......2003-01-22
This book was required for my accounting class. It seems the have the holes of Swiss cheese though. While it probably covers the basics of Financial Accounting as well as any other book, it lacks some things that I thought would be entirely useful. For example only the odd exercises have the solutions in the back. Maybe it's just me, but I expect all since I'm in college. Furthermore, despite the copyright date of 2002, this edition contains a lot of old material. It lists Market Capitalization information about Microsoft from the spring and summer of 2000, the peak in stock prices. Also in the first chapter it speaks of accounting ethics and references a speech made in 1998 by the chairman of the SEC. It makes no mention to the scandals of Enron, WorldCom etc. (Enron declared bankruptcy on Dec. 2, 2001.) This edition appears to be just a desire by the authors to put out a new edition to limit the used book trade of the 7th edition and make more money for the authors.
If you can avoid it, do not buy this edition new.

This text proved an invaluable guide to the subject of hospital finances. This was a subject I was not particularly interested in, and the book surprised me. It is readable and clear. The logic flows smoothly. There are plenty of examples, illustrating assorted principles. After reading several books on the topic of hospital finances, this one stands out for its clarity.

Excellent Book.......2002-07-18
As an Information Technology consultant working w/health care professionals, I needed a standard reference to better understand my clients' needs.
I was working on my Masters of Accountancy after finishing my MBA, and I was lucky enough to find a Health Care Accounting course which used this text book.
I cannot recommend the book highly enough. If you take the time to read the different sections of the book, and read the (copious) scenario problems at the end of the section where the lessons are applied, you will acquire a much richer understanding of the accounting dynamics in health care.
Excellent primer for Health Care number crunchers.......1999-04-16
I work in a health care administration postion and found the book to be very useful for refreshing me on basic accounting concepts as well as covering more complex topics of health care finance and cost accounting. I would highly recommend this book as a reference for health care institutions (especially hospitals) for orientation and as a way to educate their managers. The real-life examples and problems are invaluable for explaining the topics covered in each chapter.
Need some books about hospital accounting.......1999-03-17
I will teach some concept about hospital accountiny at the Nursey School in my University, I think this book could help me to improve my knowledge about thgis topic. I

Book Description
TRUCE! Using Elder Mediation to Resolve Conflict among Families, Seniors, and Organizations is a handbook that distinguishes between counseling and mediation, lists situations in which mediation is recommended, and offers many case studies from the authors' own mediation practices as well as from other contributing mediators/professionals in the healthcare field. They also list steps of a mediation to show how simply the process works. Worksheets for caregivers, financial checklists, communication tips, and dozens of referral sources are listed to round out this practice handbook.
Customer Reviews:
Truce! Using Elder Mediation to Resolve Conflict Among Familiels, Seniors, and Organizations.......2007-03-17
I am pursuing a career in elder mediation. I found this book to be a good overview of the kind of cases, for which it would work, and how the process works. Appendixes include a list of services available for adults with telephone numbers and e-mail addresses, assessment checklists, and and useful forms.
Adequate, but I'm looking for something better.......2006-03-07
I will use this book and I will recommend it to mediators, Information and Assistance people at Departments of Aging and others who serve seniors and their families and friends. That said, I find weaknesses that I hope will be corrected in future editions. I hope other authors will take a crack at this subject and take more care to be objective and neutral.
For example, sometimes the authors' prejudices come through such as assuming that the preferred and first option would be for a parent to live with children and only after that option is disregarded should other options be explored. And suggesting that living trusts are an "imperitive" document when they are inappropriate for most people and the subject of scams across the country. (See U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging hearing on this issue.) They also didn't discuss many options for involvement of attorneys in mediation. They also discuss only one model of mediation and some who choose mediation may be surprised if their mediator doesn't follow that process.
I do like the use of specific examples in the later chapters. And I like that it is in easy-to-read medium size print and uses lots of white space and bold subject divider headings so that it is easy to leaf through and find specific information.
The tone is good and there is a lot of very valuable information there. As we work on training mediators at our community mediation center to do this work, I will recommend this resource. It does review in broad scope information related to the aging process, as well as describe a mediation process or style which is close to the facilitative model we use.
Easy Reading.......2005-04-21
I found the outline of the book easy to follow and full of practical tips for those of us sandwiched between kid and parent care. The "pearls of wisdom" introducing each chapter were thought provoking and soothing. The case examples were succinctly written. Despite their brevity, however, these cases were effective in demonstrating the value of mediation to address conflict in commmon elder care situations.
It was quick reading and organized for easy future reference. I highly reccomend this book for those entering the world of elder care.
Elder Mediator finds this book a great tool .......2005-02-23
Truce! is extremely accessible for anyone with an elder issue. Its practical approach, positive attitude combined with tools and references for any situation are really helpful to our clients. Elder mediation is a new practice area and its nice to have a book that helps families struggling with elder situations link to, and understand the potential power of mediation.
Useful information-packed book for families & professionals.......2004-10-03
This is one of those books that you will read once. And then you will read it again and again. Conflict resolution with families is so important. Often times the roles of the family are turned upside down when suddenly the adult children are 'in charge' of mom and dad. This is a must read for family members, caregivers, seniors and all health care professionals working with this group of people.
How do you tell mom she must give up her car keys? How do you tell dad he must turn over the checkbook? How do you accomplish these and other struggles in elder care issues, while keeping the peace? This book will walk you through it.
Highly recommend it to our readers at

outstanding.......2003-01-12
the best, most useful book i have seen on the subject of mediation
Most helpful!.......2002-02-05
There are many resources available on the topic of peer mediation, but we were searching for a reference that could not only give us insight into using peer mediation and and how it fits into the larger picture of conflict resolution, but a book that also gives a day by day training schedule for grades 3-12. The added bonus were the training posters also included! This book includes everything needed to implement a peer mediation program including possible ways to expand an existing program, a tracking form, and ways to evaluate the program. Gilhooley & Scheuch went the extra mile in giving relevent information that other references on peer mediation just don't have.
Excellent resource!
Book Description
Using Conflict in Organizations challenges the common assumption that conflict in groups and organizations is detrimental to performance. It offers an alternative perspective by presenting the scarce but accumulating knowledge on how conflict can enhance individual achievement, the quality of group decision making, and the productivity in organizations. Part one of the book provides a general framework that explicitly links conflict to performance and from which this relationship can be understood. The second and third parts build on and illustrate this framework in a series of thematic chapters. Part two focuses on performance and intragroup conflict, covering topical areas such as dissent, groupthink, and strategic decision making. Part three deals with the performance-enhancing effects of intergroup conflict and addresses issues such as collective negotiation and diversity management. The final section of the book focuses on applications and intervention strategies that can stimulate conflict in ways that will enhance performance in groups and organizations. Offering a new perspective on conflict in groups and organizations, based on fundamental and field research, Using Conflict in Organizations will be required reading for academics, advanced students, and practitioners in management, organizational behavior, and organizational psychology.
