1 out of 5 stars I don't know where to begin because this book is so bad!.......2007-07-08

Fist of all, I'll start off buy saying ladies, if you're 25 or under, this book is not for you!!!
Second, if you only identify with one or two attributes categorized in this book, this book will not help you very nuch, as you will only be looking at a maximum of 10 pages from the entire book. Plus, the help is so generic and limited. They only give you a list of 4 or 5 helpful cuts/lines/lengths, and a series of 4 or 5 stlyes/etc. to avoid. Well, I realized that there are FAR more stlyes/etc. in the world than 5, so if I go to the store and find something NOT mentioned in the book, how am I supposed to know if I can wear it or not!? Most books are designed to give you a starting point to further progress your fashion savvy conscious, but this book did no such thing. It was a dead end leaving you wondering what the heck you're supposed to do now. DON'T BUY THIS BOOK. EVEN IF YOU FOUND A $0.50 DEAL, IT'S NOT WORTH IT.

2 out of 5 stars I am not buying what they are selling.......2007-06-13

I was extremely disappointed in this book. I love these kind of style advice books but this just left me feeling like I didn't learn a thing. Much of the advice was old hat, and some of it I just didn't even agree with like busty girls shouldn't wear turtlenecks - cmon! And it only addressed specific body areas rather than all over body types.

For my money Stacey and Clinton's book is the way to go. Haven't found one yet to rival theirs. And I guess I just like the way they seem to find beauty in all figure types and bring it out. I know Susannah and Trinny are British but their humor sometimes just borders on sheer viciousness. Counter-productive to raising people self-esteem.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful.......2007-04-03

I find there ideas to be very helpful. Being a 40 something Mom with teens, I don't want to appear a nerdy dresser.

3 out of 5 stars Most of what I own is what not to wear!.......2007-03-26

Not very insightful. I like these girls on TV, but the book left me clueless. I still do not know what current styles will look good on me. A better book is Nothing to Wear?: A Five-Step Cure for the Common Closet. It talks about body types and style preferences. And give you a plan to clean your closet and avoid buying mistakes in the future.

4 out of 5 stars Very Helpful. VERY........2007-03-10

I absolutely love watching re-runs of Trinny & Susannah's show. And this book is good for those who need help in figuring out what to wear.

Book Description

Good beauty advice is hard to come by these days. Women are constantly inundated with products that promise to remove wrinkles, reduce puffiness, highlight cheekbones, hide blemishes, and make them look younger, healthier, tanner, and even thinner–but do these products really work? Are they worth the time, money, and effort? Carmindy, makeup artist on TLC's popular show What Not to Wear, believes that the secret to a great look is to focus on the positive: learn how to enhance your best natural features with sheer washes of color rather than hide under layers of artificial–looking makeup. In The 5–Minute Face, Carmindy shares her beauty philosophy, offering a practical, easy, and always–successful makeup routine that works for all ages and skin types.

The steps for achieving the five–minute face–from smoothing on foundation, to slicking on lip color–are simple. But as Carmindy demonstrates, many women don't know which product is right for their skin tones, or are clueless on how to apply makeup for optimal results. Throughout every chapter, she provides valuable advice on perfecting the makeup technique that is right for your face, including product tips and accompanying "toolbox" sections that describe which tools to use with each type of makeup.

No matter what your age is, or whether you have porcelain skin or rosacea, Carmindy will help you look fabulous. In addition to the 5–minute makeover, she discusses:

•How to Get Brows That Wow: Learn what brow shape best frames your face

•What's Age Got to Do with It?: Tricks and trade secrets that keep every woman looking beautiful, from teens to women fifty and over.

•Beauty Comes in All Colors: Freckles? Blemishes? Carmindy solves the problems that make finding the perfect makeup for your skin tone difficult. Also includes tips on lash dying for those fair lashes, and lash perming for those who want permanently curled lashes.

•The 10–Minute Face: Carmindy shows how to build on the 5–minute face for special occasions. Everything from sexy dates–looking right in all white at your wedding–to the perfect look for a job interview.

Accompanied throughout by Palma Kolansky's beautiful photography, The 5–Minute Face is every woman's guide to enhancing their unique and beautiful features with the perfect makeup routine.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful make up tips.......2007-10-03

Carmindy gives detailed explanations about how to apply any and all make up you could ever need. There are suggestions for every hair color, skin color, age, and special event. The best part about this book is that she provides you with brands, expensive and cheap, and shades that she recommends you to use - not just how to apply the make up.

4 out of 5 stars Delivers what it promises - a simple quick routine.......2007-09-29

This is definitely one of the Better beauty books. It is well organized, easy & quick to read and understand, and covers all the basics. There's even a section for Asian, Olive skin, Mocha skin, etc...which some beauty books skip. There is also a 'buying guide' at the back providing both a $$$ and $ option, bravo!
Could be better: 1. she names the colors she recommends, but a picture of the actual colors would be more helpful. 2. Could use more pics of models with varying combos of eye, skin, and hair color. She had a section for Brunettes, but brunettes could have light or dark eyes, light, medium, or dark skin, etc...I'm sure there're more specific color recommendations for these different combos... instead of just 'pink, peach, rose, ...'for the whole group.

3 out of 5 stars 5 Minute makeover.......2007-09-28

This is a fair book for a quick makeover. Not much in depth tho. And certainly not much for anyone over say 45. Very simple ,very quick. Not a lot of color advice except for young perky girls ..

5 out of 5 stars best makeup book I've ever read.......2007-09-27

Got what I was hoping for--a fast easy makeup look that I could do myself. Very clear & simple directions. Particularly liked product specifics (low cost & higher end recommendations).

4 out of 5 stars Simple & informative.......2007-09-24

I found this book very easy to understand. If you've been stuck in the trap of wearing the same makeup for years, you'll find lots of new ideas to give you a totally fresh way of doing your makeup. There are also good ideas about what products are appropriate for each age group and skin colour. I found these products easy to find online, even here in Australia. Great book!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Somewhat Useful.......2007-09-16

I thought that this book was sort of useful in some sections, but others did not fit my lifestyle at all and some of the good ideas seemed to reveal too much to me (wearing a suit jacket with no shirt.) That sort of exposure is considered inappropriate in the circles I run in.

2 out of 5 stars Quite a let-down.......2007-03-26

I've enjoyed Trinny and Susannah's other books and picked up quite a few tips from those, but this book has me shaking my head. Worst is the career-dressing advice: it might be fine if you've got an entry-level position, but if you're at a managerial or professional level, forget it!
For one thing, Trinny and Susannah seem to have a strong allergy to suits or, for that matter, any clothes that are conservative or classic. Well, trendy doesn't work for everybody, and it doesn't work all the time. Some of their "don'ts" work as well as, or even better, than their "do's". And some sections are overlong; do we really need numerous versions of skiwear and after-ski wear?

2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2007-02-21

Perhaps it is because the show is UK based but I was taken aback by some of the after pictures. Alot of dresses over pants and very outlandish hats are shown as do's.

Some of the befores don't look too bad other than the dated 80's look which I think we all know not to wear. I would have preferred more tips on handling body types rather than the obvious no's. They put in some really sloppy don'ts which aren't much help unless people in London are really walking around like that. We need more realistic don'ts as opposed to the obvious.

2 out of 5 stars Ew........2007-01-21

On multiple occasions they recommend wearing "a dress over slacks" as a "contemporary style," ironically using the outdated word "slacks." Have you ever seen anybody wear this? I mean, without people pointing and laughing?

The dress over slacks idea generally summarises the character of What Not To Wear's fashion advice: Gross. Frumpy. Sometimes just plain weird. Granted, the outfits they "correct" in this book are worse, but only because the original outfits are inappropriate for the occasion in question. Their advised outfits are not technically inappropriate, just ugly, and certainly not the only stylistic alternative to the original like they seem to claim.

Their choices might not seem so disgusting to me and make me feel so defiantly resentful of everything they portray as "fashionable" if they didn't claim to be some sort of godlike aesthetic authority, despite having no tangible style. But they DO seem to claim that they are taste embodied, which is clearly impossible. If such a thing exists it certainly won't be found in anything do with the What Not to Wear franchise.

4 out of 5 stars Just on Okay Book.......2006-08-25

If you are going to buy a book by these girls I would recommend their other book "What You Can Wear Can Change Your Life". This book has good information if you are going to a summer wedding or a winter wedding, if you are going on a summer vacation vs. a winter vacation. What to wear at the PTA meeting. A fun book, but more information in the other book.

This book is occasion led. Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Read the Introduction.......2005-10-19

If you read the intro to this book it is a great help to understanding and utilizing it best. Many of the "what not to wear outfits" are as Trinny and Susannah say the most obvious options and therefore BORING. What they are trying to teach the reader is how to be different but still appropriate, and also how to stand out. It is a wonderful source for anyone who wants to do that. It is fun to look at, has funny comments, and will help you get out of a rut, as will all of the what not to wear books. I highly reccomend all three. It is also an excellent eye opener for anyone who is in a bit of a time warp. Give them to all of your girlfriends as gifts.

5 out of 5 stars Love the show, love the women, love the book.......2005-01-07

I think this book is fabulous, unlike the other reviewer. I agree with the canadian mum who felt that some of the selections were alittle "off" but the book has sections that allow the reader to determine her comfort level with fashion. So, there's a "classic", "trendy", "casual", and "dressy" for each of the book chapters such as Beach, Interviews, Mommy Going Back to the Office, etc. So, I think you should have a little "bizzare" for the "trendy" "cutting edge" mom. Its a great book and it introduces you to new things as well as ways to upgrade the old. Another winner from the fashionistas for BBC.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2004-01-09

Although I love the What Not To Wear programmes, this book was a big disappointment. It is divided into occasions (work, weddings, school functions, etc.) and gives several examples of what to wear and what not to wear for each. The problem was that the suggested outfits were far too fussy and in somecases even bizarre. For example they suggested a long orange and brown woven dress with a large head piece made of fake butterflies as appropriate for a winter wedding. For a day-to-evening look they suggested wearing a plain white suit and then removing to blouse in the evening (showing cleavage almost to the waist). The everyday outfits emphasised large metal belts (I threw mine away in the 80's) and wearing dresses over full loose trousers. Personally I would feel like a fashion victim in the majority of their suggested outfits. The funniest suggestion was to make sure the back of your thong underwear is pretty (they show an embroidered butterfly) so people have something nice to look at when you bend over. Granted I'm a mum of 2 from Toronto, but I don't think I will be rushing out to follow their advice.

5 out of 5 stars explains key ideas with minimal maths complications.......2006-01-26

The field of Artificial Intelligence has been around for decades. During which there have been numerous advances and disappointments. Often, the advances have been described in other texts using highly mathematical treatments. All to the good. Except that this does tend to act as a barrier to newcomers to AI, who might not have a very strong maths background. And even for those who do, the sheer amount of maths to understand in those books can be time consuming.

Which is the attraction of Negnevitsky's approach. He deliberately de-emphasises the maths. Enough is retained to give a valid treatment. But it is now far easier to understand the underlying ideas. Such as artificial neural networks. Here, I was also impressed to see him give proper prominence to John Hopfield's seminal contributions to neural network theory.

More generally, the book covers well the entire breadth of AI. From fuzzy systems to genetic algorithms to rule-based systems.

5 out of 5 stars A very good introductory text book for intelligent systems.......2005-06-07

The author explains various AI concepts in very simple terms and has managed to present the math behind some of the ideas in an understandable manner.

The treatment of various topics is intermediate though but it is a good place to start and does not leave the reader riddled with complex math equations.

In-fact the author has done a great job at keeping the concepts separate from the mathematics, except for some places like neural networks where it is not possible to explain the concepts without talking about the math involved.

Instead of focusing too much on a particular aspect of intelligent systems this book deals with a whole spectrum of technologies such as fuzzy systems, neural networks, hybrid systems etc.

The writing style of the author is very simple and clear and it is possible to finish the entire book over a period of one semester or a little more.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Treatment of Complex Topics.......2003-12-14

What Dr. Negnevitsky states in the preface of this book, "Most of the literature on AI is expressed in the jargon of computer science, and crowded with complex matrix algebra and differential equations" is an accurate assessment of current textbooks that try to go beyond just the basics of AI.

Actually, this book does contain some of the same complex material that Dr. Negnevitsky accuses others for having with one exception: He does a terrific job in simplifying the complex theories behind them.

At first, when I flipped through the pages, huge equations and matrices jumped at me. My first impression was that this book was for serious computer scientists or mathematicians. I was looking for simpler material for my beginning AI students. I started reading the preface and found the argument interesting.

I speed-read through the first chapter and found the history of the field presented in a concise and a very well laid out fashion. I jumped into reading the beginning of chapter 2 and I was amazed at how well Dr. Negnevitsky progressed from basic ideas to more and more complex layers. With other similar books, the reader will need many basic theory books (mathematics, basic AI...) in order to understand the topics. Dr. Negnevitsky provides all the basics necessary. This same strategy is repeated for the remaining chapters.

I acquired the book and read it from beginning to end. I found the material consistently well presented. One warning: this book does get very technical and complex in many chapters. However, the material in each of those chapters is progressively laid out. Even if a reader stops in the middle of some chapters, there is still a lot to gain from the experience of reading the entire book. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in really understanding beyond just keywords and delve into the internals of AI topics.

Thanks to Dr. Negnevitsky for a great book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Introductory Book on Soft Computing.......2002-11-10

For a beginner that wants to know where the stories about Soft Computing really converge, this book is a starting point. The style of the author is simple and great.

My interest was to get a book that keeps the daunting mathematical jargons in Fuzzy Logic (contained in several other books) minimal, while presenting the concepts. I fell in love with this book, that I had to run through all the pages as if it's a novel.

This book really demonstrates that the whole idea behind intelligent systems are simple and straightforward. You do not need another teacher. He presented algorithms (e.g. back-propagation)in a very simple to understand manner.

Dr. Michael Negnevitsky, the author, must be a great teacher. It's a handy and nice book. I strongly recommend it.

              Book Description

Build your own intelligent agent system…

Intelligent agent technology is a tool of modern computer science that can be used to engineer complex computer programmes that behave rationally in dynamic and changing environments. Applications range from small programmes that intelligently search the Web buying and selling goods via electronic commerce, to autonomous space probes.

This powerful technology is not widely used, however, as developing intelligent agent software requires high levels of training and skill. The authors of this book have developed and tested a methodology and tools for developing intelligent agent systems. With this methodology (Prometheus) developers can start agent-oriented designs and implementations easily from scratch saving valuable time and resources.

Developing Intelligent Agent Systems not only answers the questions “what are agents?” and “why are they useful?” but also the crucial question: “how do I design and build intelligent agent systems?” The book covers everything a practitioner needs to know to begin to effectively use this technology - including an introduction to the notion of agents, a description of the concepts involved, and a software engineering methodology.

              Read on for:

              • a practical step-by-step introduction to designing and building intelligent agent systems.
              • a full life-cycle methodology for developing intelligent agent systems covering specification, analysis, design and implementation of agents.
              • PDT: Prometheus Design Tool – software support for the Prometheus design process.
              • the example of an electronic bookstore to illustrate the design process throughout the book.

Electronic resources including the Prometheus Design Tool (PDT), can be found at: http://www.cs.rmit.edu.au/agents/prometheus

This book is aimed at industrial software developers, software engineers and at advanced undergraduate students.  It assumes knowledge of basic software engineering but does not require knowledge of Artificial Intelligence or of mathematics. Familiarity with Java will help in reading the examples in chapter 10.

Ask the computer any question and it will figure out how to give you a correct answer. At least, that's always been the science-fiction scenario, a dream still far removed from real-life computing. But the growth of "intelligent agent" software appears to be bringing that scenario closer to reality. Is it all just hype, as many believe? Alper Caglayan and Colin Harrison examine the realities of today's intelligent agents and discover that while we're still a long way from the Hollywood picture of business computing, today's very real agents are already powerful business tools. They examine agents for Internet, Intranet and desktop use, evaluating processes that users can customize or automate. They look at agents that seek and screen information, sort e-mail, simulate human conversation, streamline processes for users, and much more. But they go deeper, delving into the processes and trade-offs of introducing agents into a workplace--including security risks. Perhaps equally important is that Caglayan and Harrison offer a clear and sensible taxonomy, providing a means for cogent discussion of agent technology.

              5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......1997-07-18

This is a great book! It is a super introduction to agent technology. There is so much hype about agents around -- this book provides a coherent taxonomy of agent technologies and really explains what agents can and cannot do.

Other books I've read on agent technology are either too technical and full of mumbo-jumbo, or are marketingese and filled with content copied straight from company web sites. This book is a great mixture of technology and business that allows you to see the impact agents will make in business.

These guys have really put a lot of thought into this book!

4 out of 5 stars A great resource, demystifies important topic........1997-06-25

Check out the companion website. A place to find out more about the book, read a sample chapter, and keep up-to-date on a rapidly moving field.

The book is focussed on commercial business applications for software agents - not so much technical research. Ideal for CTO's and CEO's considering agent learning functions in their corporate Intranets or applications.
