3 out of 5 stars Good Book, but dated.......2003-07-16

This is a good book, however all books on the internet are outdated even before they hit the presses.
If you know nothing about Internet Radio this book is a good start, however you'll have to turn to the search engines to find out what is happening now. A good book that ages fast. Think twice before spending your money. Surfing the web is free and up to date. Wyatt Kaldenberg

5 out of 5 stars Great book - with unlimited free updates!.......2002-01-12

It's a really good book - excellent if you've ever thought about setting up your own web radio station. (But let's face it - most of us won't!)
What's a really good idea is the accompanying web site which will provide the latest info on trends, tools etc. A simple idea which should avoid the usual problem with these types of book - that they get out of date almost immediately.
Hope the updates keep coming ....

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Terrific introduction to blogging.......2007-05-25

This is a wonderfull book about blogging. It is mainly an introduction. The book starts with some general information about blogging. Next it explains the different kind of blogs, were to host your blog or use a server side blog. It also guides you how to write a blog, how to earn money with your blog. The last part of the book consits of a list per category of the most important blogs. It is not a book to read from cover to cover. I used it for inspiration and examples as well as instruction book. What I did was read a chapter and followed the links it provided. The design of the book is very pretty, well done a pleasure to read and a excellent introduction.
It doesn't go into details how to maintain a blog or how to do research for your blog e.g. using e-mail alerts, website monitors etc.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent guide to blogging that will reward both the casual reader and experienced blogger.......2007-02-18

This is an excellent guide to blogging, essential for the beginner, yet even someone who's more advanced will find things in here of interest. It only takes a simple idea that you hadn't considered to make the whole volume worth purchasing and this book has many little gems.

What I like about the book is that it's written in a sytle that's easy to understand and simple, yet it doesn't leave out the important things and gives a very well rounded treatment of the topic. More than that, unlike other books on technology, it's actually enjoyable to read, well illustrated, attractively layed out and an interesting size.

The book covers the basics - what a blog is, trends in blogging, how to find blogs with search engines, subscribing with RSS. It continues with more of the mechanics as to how to create a blog using either the free sites or paid software. There's a good deal of discussion about the merits of each path, how to design your blog (typefaces, headders, links, html, side blogs, blogrolls) etc., how to measure and increase traffic to your blog, potential ways to make money from it (with a realistic discussion of those aspects) and then finishing with a 'blogroll' of 250 of the better blogs, distributed across a wide variety of categories (with a short description on why each was included).

The book is filled with references to blogs on the web and websites for software, utilities, examples of blogs, tools, techniques and other add-ons. However, in most cases it also includes a brief description of that site or tool so you can decide whether you want to go and take a look or perhaps just skip it. In a book with literally several hundred external references, this is quite handy.

If you're just interested in finding out what blogging is all about or taking the first steps towards creating a blog or perhaps even how to enhance your blog, The Rough Guide to Blogging is your essential guide that will reward your purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Informative, easy, and to the point! A great read!.......2006-11-02

I was very pleased with this book. After only a couple days of reading through it I was able to grasp the concepts of blogging and begin my own blog like a pro!

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in blogging, it is a MUST HAVE!

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Comprehensive, Easy to Read.......2006-10-04

Having had a blog for the past 5+ years, I believed the entire blogging phenomenon to be basic. Fun, but basic. I also simultaneously knew that I was deluding myself into thinking I fully understood the ins-and-outs to this world of personal on-line publishing. Little did I know that I needn't have been scared of undue complications when it comes to my blog... Mr. Jonathan Yang has made it clear that creating and manipulating a blog (and many other types of on-line personal media) is easy enough such that you can spend far less time immersing yourself in techno-jargon and more in communicating whatever you feel in whatever way you wish.

This book is heavy with fascinating topics, but at the same time extraordinarily easy to read. While I've already read the entire thing, this book will constantly serve as a refreshing guidebook the next time I'm blogging and wondering, "Alright... what now?"

5 out of 5 stars The First Book You Want To Get.......2006-09-26

"The Rough Guide To Blogging" is a deceptively small book, but it has virtually everything you need to answer your questions. There are clear, concise chapters on getting started, acquiring skills, and getting your blog noticed. There's also an up-to-date (as of 2006) guide to a dizzying number of current blogs, as well as evaluations of and instructions to providers like Blogger, TypePad, and Yahoo. This is definitely the best value for your dollar of all the books about blogs that I know.

        Book Description

        INTRODUCTION

This book is a guide to the most interesting radio programs in the world. Such a guide was never necessary before, because you couldn't get all the radio stations in the world, only the dozen or so in your town. Now the Internet, as it has changed so much else, is changing that. If you are one of the millions of people who have already checked out Internet radio, you know what an astonishing variety of great radio is out there. You could get lost forever exploring it all. This book is designed to help you find radio you love, and reduce the time you spend stumbling around looking for it. If you have never tried Internet radio, this book is also a getting-started guide, showing you, step by step, how to get connected.

The potential of Internet radio is amazing. Every day more stations come onto the Net, every day their streams improve, every day they figure out how to make their web sites more helpful to listeners. Every day you can find some great new radio program you never knew was out there, and fall in love with radio all over again. Radio is changing into something completely new, more powerful, more various, and more useful. The change is not complete. Those of us lucky to live in high-bandwidth neighborhoods feel it first, while computer users in the United Kingdom, for example, not only have limited bandwidth, but mostly still pay for it by the minute, holding back the day when it becomes practical for use as radio. But if the timing of the change is yet to be seen, its shape is already clear.

The one great limitation constraining radio throughout its history has been geography. Except for a few hobbyist "DXers," trying to catch skipping signals in the night, listeners have been mostly limited to radio stations in their own neighborhoods. You may remember a great radio station in the town where you used to live, or one you heard on vacation, but you could never listen to them from where you are now. Well now you can. That is exactly what Internet radio allows.

So it is no wonder that both the number of listeners and the number of stations on Internet radio is exploding. Every day, 200,000 new listeners tune in. Most broadcast stations have found their way to the Internet by now, so if you remember a program you once heard in Paris, it is probably on the Net. Far more exciting than the sheer numbers is the breadth and depth of the programming. Freed from the economic and legal restraints that limit what is on the airwaves, Internet radio offers something for nearly everyone.

Whether you're interested in learning Portuguese, scoping out the latest in African music before it hits the stores, or getting first-hand news from the latest flash point of confrontation, there is a radio station broadcasting live right now to bring you just what you're looking for. And in addition to broadcast stations that extend their signal over the Internet, the ease of Internet radio has also led to a boom of Net-only stations, such as the poetry-intensive station a professor hosts from his office in an English department.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars Internet Radio.......2003-05-25

Internet Radio offers information on access to thousands of radio stations, world-wide and in almost every cultural category. Radio listeners who suffer from weak reception of local stations or do not share the taste or politics of local broadcasters will find a treasure of choices.

The author's politically-correct and lefist politics are evident in his diatribe against "Right-Wing" radio stations (p.269) and in other sermons dispersed in his text. Some stations may not have been listed for those listeners.

However, readers will discover a vast choice of radio stations, delivering music, talk, drama, analysis and windows on cultures the world. Methods for connection and ratings of broadcasts abound.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Rough Guide to Macs and OSX.......2006-07-03

A friend loaned me this book when I bought my first Mac a couple of months ago. Having been a PC user for many years, I was fearing the change. But this book made the transition simple and easy. It may be that the Mac itself is so ease to use, but I don't think so. Whenever I wanted to do something that the PC could never do, the Mac was able (with the book to guide me through the simple steps).

The book helped me transfer all my PC files across to the Mac, update my calendar and address book, sync with my phone and interact with my iPod. It was simply laid out, with everything easily discovered by leafing through the index. I am sure there will be more to discover about getting the full use of the programs provided, but thus far the book has given me everything I need and more.

Excellent book, particularly for a Mac novice with some idea of how to use a computer.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Short, sweet and concise. Excellent reference for the digital music world........2006-05-01

I like this book. It's well organized and easy to follow. It's broken up into 28 easy to understand chapters and is a great introductory book into the exciting world of iPod ownership and the portable digital music world. Everything from accessories to managing your music and even using your iPod as a hard drive. Wow! It's a great pocket guide and reference. Now if I could just find something like this that could help me out with my new Motorola Razor cell phone, the world would be a better place!

          4 out of 5 stars Outdated? - Perhaps.......2006-03-10

The previous reviewer dismissed this as outdated and suggested if you don't already own an iPod, to avoid the book. I bought the book after making the decision to buy but before I had actually made the purchase. I'm glad I bought it. I found the book highly informative both in the features and use of the iPod but also with the iTunes software. For me, it is indispensible. If you're planning on purchasing an iPod, or already have one and are trying to get maximum functionality out of both the iPod and iTunes, this is money very well spent.

          3 out of 5 stars already outdated.......2005-10-28

To some extent this book, which has just been published, is already outdated. Apple has just released the Nano and announced that it will soon discontinue its iconic iPod models in favour of the Nano. So if you do not have an iPod, I suggest you avoid this book.

Otherwise, it can quickly help you with better usage of your iPod. Perhaps to share music with your friends, which is one example discussed in the text.

The book also covers iTunes, which is run on a regular Mac. Many features that can be tweaked, like the Equalizer. And the book shows how to access the iTunes music store, which is one of the biggest sellers of online music.
