The Unix for Oracle DBAs Pocket Reference has a remarkably tight focus. It's about making Oracle database management systems run optimally under various Unix operating systems, including HP-UX, Sun Solaris, and IBM AIX (there's also some specialized coverage of IRIX and DEC Unix). Author Donald Burleson assumes readers know how to get around the Unix command shell, and that they're quite familiar with Oracle database administration. To put it simply, to get the most out of this book, you should already know what you want to do, and need only to be told concisely how to do it. This book is ideal for people moving from Oracle administration under Windows to the same job under Unix.
As a byproduct of its careful focus, the book is tiny. It almost fits in a shirt pocket, and is about as thick as a standard pencil. A typical entry documents a single command (there are separate entries for different operating systems when commands differ), and includes a bit of text followed by the relevant command and a listing of typical output. Utility scripts with Oracle relevance are listed with minimal comments. This isn't traditional man-page-style Unix documentation, but rather advice on how to accomplish various Oracle goals inside Unix. Most readers will likely turn first to the index to find the entries that they need. --David Wall
Topics covered: Making Oracle database management systems run well under HP-UX, Sun Solaris, IBM AIX, IRIX, and DEC Unix. Ways of examining and adjusting Oracle's use of processes, memory, processor cycles, files, disk resources, and other aspects of the Unix system. Information is presented in recipes, in type-this-to-do-that format.
Book Description
The Unix for Oracle DBAs Pocket Reference puts within easy reach the commands that Oracle database administrators need most when operating in a Unix environment. If you are an Oracle DBA moving to Unix from another environment such as Windows NT or IBM Mainframe, you know that these commands are far different from those covered in most beginning Unix books. To jump start your learning process, Don Burleson has gathered together in this succinct book the Unix commands he most often uses when managing Oracle databases. You'll be able to reach into your pocket for the answer when you need to know how to:
- Display all Unix components related to Oracle, identify the top CPU consumers on your server, and even kill processes when necessary
- Stack Unix commands into powerful scripts that can perform vital DBA functions
- Monitor Unix filesystems, and automatically manage your trace files, dump files, and archived redo log files
- Use essential server monitoring commands such as top, sar, and vmstat
And there's much more between these covers. If you need to get up to speed with Oracle on Unix, and quickly, this book is for you.

Useful Tips and Tricks.......2005-06-29
This booklet contains a collection of shell script code snippets and other UNIX tips for the DBA. Not everything will be useful for everyone, but only the most experienced UNIX geek will fail to find one trick or the other that he did not know before. And what else is UNIX expertise if not knowledge about such little tricks?
I especially liked the sections about commands to collect performance statistics for the UNIX boxes your databases run on. You do not normally find these commands in general UNIX books (not even in the meatiest ones) and would have to turn to special UNIX admin books, which might be sort of an overkill for a mere DBA.
The book also introduces into some very basic UNIX concepts like piping commands and changing file permissions. This is superfluous as this booklet does by no means repalce a full-fledged UNIX introduction. But if you are a DBA who has already read his "UNIX for Beginners" or the like and who wants to delve a little bit deeper into HP-UX or AIX, than this book is for you.
Most useful for Oracle DBAs.......2005-05-09
This is a very helpful book which provides a basic overview of using Unix running Oracle. Perhaps the best feature of this book is that the author has spent lot of time providing only the most useful and salient Unix scripts for the Oracle DBA. You will not find any unnecessary or redundant information in this book. In fact, I highly recommend all Oracle DBAs to read this book and memorize all its ideas.
Here are some of the best tips:
1)Script to kill all Oracle processes.
2)Place a SQL * Plus script in a Unix Shell Wrapper
3)Ensure that only the Oracle user can run a Unix shell script
4)Execute a SQL*Plus Script on all the instances in the enterprise.
5)Automatically delete old trace and audit files
6)Copy TNSnames.ora to all the Unix servers in the enterprise
7)Detect when Oracle is not accepting connections and send alert
Good reference book for Unix newbies.......2004-07-28
This booklet is full of usefull Unix commands, most of them at the junior level and just a few more are complex. I used this book maybe 10 times since I bought it a couple of years ago, so I am not sure that I have utilizied my purchase well.
Still, I would recommend the book to any DBA who is new to Unix.
Good for the UNIX Novice.......2004-05-28
Decent reference - at least pointing out some interesting options and some things to watch out for at the OS level. As mentioned in other reviews - its HP-UX oriented with nearly as much focus on AIX, but lacks detail on Solaris (and Linux).
Fairly well written - but mainly pretty simple content. Just keeps you from looking up the syntax in some cases. If you are new to UNIX its probably worth the purchase. If you are an experienced UNIX professional - find it used to make it a worth-while purchase.
A valuable book for Oracle dbas who are new in unix.......2002-12-12
This is a book that should be in the pocket of all Oracle dbas
beginners in unix, and specially those fighting with several
flavors of unix.
If you are an experienced oracle dba working with Windows NT
or Open VMS and new in unix, these book can help you.
It's reading is easy ç, since the book contains the basics that an oracle dba need to know in order to begin working with unix as soon as possible.

Is a great book.......2006-10-24
This is a great book for who work in Unix platform. Easy to read and learn. Congratulations for the author!.
Superb book! Especially for beginners to intermediate.......2005-08-09
This is a really good book. I finished the OCP track and after that I needed some knowledge of how Oracle works on Unix and this book did it for me. Everything is explained clearly and at a very basic level. One thing I needed to know was what does a DBA do in his/her daily activities and what is the work environment like for a DBA, who does he/she interact with? This provided the exact answers and much more. But it is really great from day-to-day duties of a DBA, typical scenarios, to backup scripts. Yes, I agree this would be a great book for a Jr. DBA, as I am. Eventhough it is old (8i), you can still benefit from it a lot if you're on 9i.
I would definitely recommend this book. I liked it so much that I would buy 10 more copies :P if I could!!
EXCELLENT!!! Could not ask for more!.......2005-07-25
After reading several books on Oracle, this one hits the topic on the nose. Please have a UNIX background but if you don't, it is still an excellent book. All basics are covered here to get you going on more advanced topics in Oracle. I really got a basic understanding of Oracle with this book and would highly recommend this to anyone trying to start out in Oracle. this was written for the common technical person who knows UNIX & computing technologies in general, but you will have a bigger advantage if you are a UNIX Admin.
great for a unix guy to learn oracle.......2004-05-13
r u a unix guy? want to learn oracle? this is it.
Great Book, Must have!.......2003-02-20
Great book for anyone starting out as a Oracle DBA, takes the reader through detailed steps of setting up and maintaining an Oracle DBA. This book alone allowed me to setup my own Oracle server on Linux to get my OCP.
I recommend SUSE linux with Oracle.

Customer Reviews:
Good for a brush-up, kind.......2006-05-30
You're not going to get certified with this book, but the CD is pretty good at testing your Backup and Recovery knowledge. The CD also quizzes you on Recovery Manager (RMAN), parameter files, Import, Export, SQL Loader and Listener Control utility. Everyone here is accurate; that Oracle DBA II test is very difficult to pass with this book alone, but any practice test helps.
Waste of Money.......2004-10-04
If you use only this book, you will not pass the exam. The practice exams include topics that are not covered anywhere in the book. The level of detail provided by both the exams and the content is not sufficient to pass the real exam. I scored 95% - 100% consistently on all exams in this book including the 3 bonus exams on the cdrom and still did not pass the real exam. I found that the real exam covered several topics that either were not covered at all in this book or did not provide the level of detail or understanding necessary to pass the exam.
Does not meet the Exam objectives.......2004-08-31
I used this book as supplement and the oracle press book (R. Velpuri) as main reference. This book published by sybex does not account for all the objectives covered in the exam (1z0-032). The books covers some of the topics but not into details. I read the whole book twice and gained some knowledge out of it but I believe it is not a complete study guide for preparing for the exam. I also used the practice exam questions on the CD.
Lite on the subject matter.......2003-02-12
Having used the previous two study guides in the set for Oracle 9i DBA OCP, I found the third book (this one) to be missing the depth the first two had. I've been using Oracle's online documentation to supplement my study. This book gave me a good overview for starting, but the authors seem to pick a few examples for mostly illustrative purposes, and the questions just didn't do the subject material justice. I expect more from a study guide than just that. Organization could be better too. (Same goes for Oracle's docs.) There are so many convoluted ways to backup/restore/recover that a study guide needs to bring it all together in a concise summary. Of course that's a good exercise left to the student, along with the some hands-on stuff, which I need to get back to. I just wish I had a study guide that made better sense of it all.
Not enough to pass the exam.......2002-08-30
I passed the exam and used this book during my study but fortunately not only this book.
Pros
- The book is clear and quite pleasant to read
- You certainly need to know what's in this book to pass the exam
Cons
- All subjects in the test list are covered but not in depth
- During this Oracle certification exam, you will have basic questions about backup/recovery and Oracle networks concepts. You will certainly be able to answer these questions if you have a good understanding of the content of this book. On the other hand, you will also have "mastery" questions which required an in depth knowledge of the subject (mainly of commands). The answer to these questions is simply not in this book. Approximatively 1 question out of 3 are concerned which in my opinion is too much.

Book Description
The stability and reliability of the Linux operating system makes it an ideal platform on which to operate databases. Increasingly, major software vendors are designing their applications to run on Linux. DBA's Guide to Databases on Linux walks you through the installation and configuration of several major databases on Linux and provides a working example of an e-commerce Web site. Major commercial databases such as Oracle, Informix, Sybase, DB2 and Progress are covered in depth as well as the widely used freeware databases, MySQL and PostgreSQL. DBA's Guide to Databases on Linux is the ultimate resource and comparative reference for any DBA managing databases on Linux.
Customer Reviews:
A Keeper.......2000-09-15
My copy is now really well dogeared because of how much I'm referring to it. I've recommended this book to many of my colleagues as it's a great reference.
Too general - where's the beef?.......2000-07-20
Way too general. I was looking for more detailed and specific installation & tuning help for Postgresql database on Linux. The book provided a quick overview and the high points, but certainly not enough to get the product installed & optimized. It's coverage of GUI tools provided only an overview, with not enough info to even persue it.
Great Information!.......2000-05-19
This book is very well done- clear and concise. I'm very interested in databases on Linux, especially with Sybase. This book does a really strong job clarifying Sybase, and explaining such things as Testing, Design, Configuration, etc. I do recommend this book to anyone working or planning to work with databses on Linux.
