5 out of 5 stars Simply the best.......2004-05-06

I remember stumbling onto this book while walking through Barnes and Noble, and I immediately got it. It is the coolest book ever in regards to Doctor Who, all sorts of information and tidbits that most people never knew is included along with various other details and analyses about the adventures that have been shown during the show's long history on television.

if you are a fan of Doctor, get this book. you'll love it. it may even help inspire you to write your own reviews for some of your favorite and not so favorite Doctor Who adventures.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Doctor Who episode guide.......2003-12-17

If you're looking for a 'Doctor Who' episode guide, then you can stop looking as this is by far the best book you can buy about the television series. It's a revised and updated version of the book that was previously released as an official volume from BBC Books some years ago. It contains a synopsis of each story as well as interesting behind-the-scenes details and viewer/fan reaction and opinion. The latter is my favourite part as I find episode guides that steer clear of including opinions of stories to be as dry and boring as dust.

This updated volume also covers appearances of the Doctor and friends on television outside of the series proper, including the K-9 spin-off pilot 'K-9 And Company' and charity specials such as the very entertaining 'The Curse Of Fatal Death' which starred Rowan Atkinson, Richard E. Grant, Jim Broadbent, Hugh Grant and Joanna Lumley as the Doctor. The coverage for these stories isn't as in-depth as the television series, but it's good to see them featured in this book.

This is an essential purchase for any Doctor Who fan. For coverage of the spin-off books and audio stories, you can also find Lars Pearson's 'I, Who' series elsewhere on Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Twist on the Traditional Episode Guide.......2005-09-30

I found it interesting that some people have complained that this book tries to explain inconsistencies in continuity over the many seasons of Doctor Who rather than serving as a more traditional episode guide. With respect to those reviewers, explaining these inconsistencies is pretty much the whole point of the book.

There are numerous episode guides to Dr. Who available (both in print and online). What makes this one different is its attitude (irreverent yet loving) and its execution (creative answers to questions like, how is it that the 2nd Doctor knows about things that happened after his trial by the Time Lords).

At times, this retroactive continuity fest gets a little outrageous (1993's Dimensions in Time), and it is disappointing that the 1996 Paul McGann film wasn't included in this re-issue. Still, this is the book that made me want to revisit, re-evaluate and ultimately better enjoy a number of Who stories. I think most who read with that mindset will have a similarly positive feeling about it.

3 out of 5 stars Not for the unitiated.......2005-05-31

The book is a lot of fun to read. Knowing what it takes to put a TV show together, getting to see all of the little mistakes and to have curious bits pointed out that only a fan would see is great. I've not been a fan of Doctor Who in the past but I've been watching the new series, which is excellent. It is also in keeping with the Doctor's well-storied past, at least based on the little I've seen of previous Doctors.

But you really have to know much more about the episodes to get the full value out of this book. Many of the episodes are lost or simply not yet available. This is sad, because as low-tech and dated as those shows probably were (are), they presented some great adventures. This book will not really fill you in on all of that, though.

The authors needed to do a few things to make this book work for everyone. With their wealth of knowledge it would have taken little time for them and little space in the book. Here's what is (crucially) missing:

1. Short episode synopses. While you can gleen the general story from the comments made, a clear recitation of the storyline would have been very helpful.

2. Profiles. It would have been nice to have profiles on the main characters - the Doctor and his companions. Maybe a page on how each Doctor was played, some interesting bits about their tenure, etc. As there were only 7 Doctors covered in this book (and why not the eighth Doctor? The Fox movie - considered part of the canon by many - was made many years ago. For the new edition they could have added a few pages) you wouldn't take up a lot of space giving this very important information. Also, paragraphs on each of the companions would have been nice. We're given some nice profile-style info on the Daleks, etc. But it's sprinkled about and difficult to find.

3. Comings and Goings. Doctor Who is about change. It would be nice to have a clear understanding of when someone new came on or someone old left. "This was X's last episode." Very easy to do.

4. An Index. Would have been nice to jump around and compare and contrast, say, all the Dalek information.

5. A history of Gallifrey and the Time Lords. As this is a central part of Doctor Who, understanding them and how they fit into the series would have been wonderfully helpful. We're given about a page and a half, and maybe that's enough for some people. For a show that was on the air for nearly 3 decades, I think those subjects deserve to have those entrees expanded.

Still, I have enjoyed this book fairly much. I'll be getting another book with, probably, more stogy information, but hopefully with greater detail.

5 out of 5 stars Tons of information about Doctor Who........2005-03-28

This book is great, full of goofs, interesting dialogue, the roots (sources) of many of the stories, fashions, screw ups and lots of humor. But while the book examines each and every episode it does not tell you what happened within the episode. In other words, it tells you how something does not make sense without telling you WHY it didn't make sense. UNLESS you have ALREADY seen the episode. In other words, if you are a fan, this is the book for you. But if you are new to Doctor Who? this won't make sense. In other words there is no summary of any of the plots.
So, for a fan, it is five stars. For a person new to the show, it is worthless untill AFTER they watch a few episodes.
ENJOY!

5 out of 5 stars Won't Watch Doctor Who Without It!!!.......2005-01-10

Since receiving this book, I can't watch a Doctor Who episode without it. I don't know how the authors could analyze and link all the episodes together, but they did. I love to read the fluffs and goofs sections before watching an episode to spot the same bloopers. The book has a rather curious habit of taking any line with "end" or "take it" or other such language and turning it into something sexual. This may be a result of watching too many episodes and trying to insert humor into a book that has more of a reference quality. My copy is well worn and I also use it to see which episodes I am missing when searching to buy videos. If you don't have this book- get it!!!

Doctor Who Short Trips is a series of themed short story anthologies of new Doctor Who fiction, featuring the Doctor in all of his first eight incarnations. They feature stories written by some of the leading names in Doctor Who, past and present, including Paul Cornell, Gareth Roberts, Christopher H. Bidmead, and Paul Magrs. They didn't always ask to travel with the Doctor. And even if they did, they didn't know what the consequences would be. Were Ian's travels foretold? What paradoxical conundrums faced the Doctor, Charley ,and Will Shakespeare in Ancient Troy? And just how difficult is it to get a job when you can't account for a gap of several years on your CV?

4 out of 5 stars All About All The Companions.......2004-04-26

I usually don't buy books about shows or movies but this week I did pick up the book COMPANIONS by David J. Howe and Mark Stammers.

This book gives the histories of all of the Doctor's companions from the first episode through the novels written after the shows termination. It does not include the new movie but it does mention some of the other post Doctor productions. At the end is a listing of all of the actors and actresses and what they have done in addition to Doctor Who.

Each character and actor and actress is detailed. See how extra players became companions (like Ian Marter and Nicholas Courtney), bit players became the Doctor (Colin Baker, but at least he was always a Gallifreyan) and how one companion died, co-created Upstairs-Downstairs and then returned as a villain (Jean Marsh). You will also learn some of the oddities like how Jo Grant (Katy Manning) tried to escape her Doctor Who heritage by posing nude with a Dalek (or how she appeared in another production with Colin Baker). I was just reminded of Jo Grant by a fiddler on Lord of the Dance who bears an amazing likeness.

Whatever your interest and whoever is your favorite, this book will tell you all you want to know, whether it is what the annoying Adric has been doing since wiping out the dinosaurs or just where did Mel come into the picture?

          5 out of 5 stars Everyone needs a companion-even a Time Lord.......2002-03-25

After writing about the background on Doctor Who, the stories, and the Monsters, what could be better than a book totally devoted to the companions, written by two-thirds of the Howe-Stammers-Walker team? It's a must-have for any Who fan, I'll tell you.

Be it for muscle for the elderly Doctors or lovely babes for all of them, the companions played a huge part in the sci-fi series. Fans of the series could discuss who was their favourite companion in addition to favourite Doctor, season, story, etc.

Here's my take on some aspects of companions that readers of this review who already have this book may have formulated for themselves. The long-time companions are the ones who'll be remembered the most, and they are normally associated with a single Doctor. These are Ian and Barbara (1st Doctor), Jamie (2nd Doctor), The Brigadier and Jo Grant (3rd Doctor), Sarah Jane (4th Doctor), Tegan (5th Doctor), Peri (6th Doctor), and Ace (7th Doctor). The Brigadier is a remarkable exception in that he later became a recurring companion from Mawdryn Undead.

Some of them served as transition companions, spanning Doctors, or serving for a short time. As a result, their tenure was either short or insignificant in terms of the series. Dodo and Steven (1st Doctor), Harry (4th Doctor), Liz (3rd Doctor), and Mel (6th and 7th Doctors) were examples. Others had very short fates or in the case of the third one on this list, due to a quirk of fate: Katarina and Sarah Kingdom (1st Doctor), and Kamelion (5th Doctor).

The other thing one learns about the book was how the BBC dispensed with companions. Jackie Lane (Dodo), Peter Purves (Steven), and Michael Craze (Ben), for example, were just told, "We don't need you anymore. This will be your last episode," and they had no say in the matter. That's one of the things I hate about the BBC--they seem to treat their actors callously, like disposable razors. After a few shaves, toss them in a waste basket. It seems that the best way to leave is to plan to leave and tell the Beeb so it won't be such a big deal. William Russell (Ian), Jacqueline Hill (Barbara), Anneke Wills (Polly), and Katy Manning (Jo) did this.

Many suffered because their characters didn't develop overtime, which is too bad, because they were likable and could've been kept on. Nyssa is the prime example of this, but maybe it's because I'm biased in her favour. This may also be because three in the TARDIS may have resulted in one of them not getting a fair share of lines. One or two is an ideal number of companions per TARDIS.

The colour pictures of the ladies are quite a pleasure, especially Katy Manning (Jo) with the Dalek, Deborah Watling (Victoria) and Nicola Bryant (Peri) in their bikinis.

Another feature is the TARDIS log statistics for each companion, listing their origin, likes, dislikes, reasons for joining the Doctor, and for the women, scream factor. Victoria, Jo, and Sarah Jane scored high on that last.

So, who are my all-time favorite companions? Jo Grant, the Brigadier, Nyssa, Romana I, Sergeant Benton, Ian, Barbara, Liz, Melanie, and Ace, in that order. In presenting this compendium on the Doctor's companions, Howe and Stammers do a job that's bang-on.

P.S. I wonder if the clumsy schmerd who gave the Australian Tegan a last name that was a Yugoslavian first name is still doing his penance.

Reimagining cities as nodes of an immense network of commercial and political transactions, sociologist Saskia Sassen has transformed Information Age geography. Global Networks, Linked Cities collects research, theory, and case studies examining cities in this context by Sassen and 19 other social scientists, focusing particularly on the recent explosive growth in areas formerly--now inaccurately--called the Third World.

The jargon in Global Networks, Linked Cities can be fairly dense and the style arid, but the essays reward patient readers with insight into the interlinked worlds of finance, geography, communications, and geopolitics. Most of the pieces look closely at individual urban regions: Shanghai, Buenos Aires, and, interestingly, Beirut. All have much to tell us about the organic urban development coevolving with globalized commerce and communications, says editor Sassen. As barriers to free information flow erode, we see mergers between political, business, and academic entities.Global Networks, Linked Cities shows us how this is happening and how to think about what's coming next. --Rob Lightner

              Book Description

In her pioneering book The Global City, Saskia Sassen argued that certain cities in the postindustrial world have become central nodes in the new service economy, strategic sites for the acceleration of capital and information flows as well as spaces of increasing socio-economic polarization. One effect has been that such cities have gained in importance and power relative to nation-states.
In this new collection of essays, Sassen and a distinguished group of contributors expand on the author's earlier work in a number of important ways, focusing on two key issues. First, they look at how information flows have bound global cities together in networks, creating a global city web whose constituent cities become "global" through the networks they participate in. Second, they investigate emerging global cities in the developing world-Sao Paulo, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Mexico City, Beirut, the Dubai-Iran corridor, and Buenos Aires. They show how these globalizing zones are not only replicating many features of the top tier of global cities, but are also generating new socio-economic patterns as well. These new patterns of development promise to lead to significant changes in the structure of the global economy, as more and more cities worldwide are integrated into globalization's circuitry.

4 out of 5 stars Outsourcing, in a broader context.......2004-05-10

With the ever decreasing fall in the cost of communication, both digital and analog, this book speculates that a new global phenomenon may be emerging. A few years ago, during the height of the dot com boom, others suggested that the Web might give rise to the disaggregation of cities or cultural hubs, because cheap communications might let creative individuals work from virtually anywhere with a fast bandwidth connection to the Internet.

But as many major cities in developing countries achieve this thick connection, another possibility emerges, as suggested by this book. It is now possible for some of these cities to parlay this connection and a well educated workforce into a globally prominent role. In part by assuming some of the functionality hitherto almost exclusively taken by first world cities. Think for example on how Silicon Valley is outsourcing some of its work to Mumbai or Bangalore.

The book's suggestions of future global cities is intriguing. Though when they suggest this of Hong Kong, one might argue that it is already a global city by any reasonable measure of how plugged in it is into the global economy.
