Book Description
The first in a series called 2176: five books with tough, kick-butt heroines who help restore democracy to the world and find true love along the way.
Book One: THE LEGEND OF BANZAI MAGUIRE. After US Air Force pilot Bree "Banzai" Maguire is shot down in Korean airspace, she awakens in the year 2176 to a romantic adventure everyone will love.
Customer Reviews:
Super Reader.......2007-08-26
This is a definite Buck Rogers riff, except that in this case Buck is Bree, or Banzai, if you prefer.
A military pilot of the USA variety gets into trouble with the rest of a patrol, and a few happenings later ends up in suspended animation and wakes up in 2176.
Then you have the Han empire and the UCE - e.g. the yanks or Buck's side, if you prefer.
She has to choose between the suave Han overlord and the somewhat scruffier UCE rebel. No prizes for guessing which, in this case.
Not too bad, but Buck and Wilma in this one are a fair bit less martial than in the original.
Wonderful book.......2007-08-14
This was a neat book. Refreshingly different.
Banzaii's jet gets shot down and she's put in cold freeze for...170 years.
Now the year is 2176 (you knew that) and she is rescued by Ty
This book deals with the fight for freedom and I enjoyed it. Kinda brings back memories of historical times.
Nonstop fun thrill ride.......2006-10-25
The Legend of Banzai Maguire by Susan Grant was a nonstop fun thrill ride.
Bree "Banzai" Maguire is an Air Force pilot whose plane, while flying over North Korea, gets shot down. From there, the action and adventure doesn't stop. Banzai gets captured and wakes up 170 years in the future. This earth of the future has two major world powers, and neither democratic. These futuristic explanations can sometimes be difficult to understand and rationalize. But Grant gives us a reasonable account that's pretty easy to grasp. Banzai soon realizes that a group of freedom fighters has chosen her as their symbol of hope.
The Legend of Banzai Maguire is considered an action-romance book. Though, it's considerably heavier on the science fiction/action side.
This book is just the first of five in the 2176 miniseries. The first and fifth are written by Susan Grant. Unfortunately, this first book leaves you hanging enough to want to know what happens in their fight for freedom, so I'm off to pick up the next in the series!
ok.......2006-03-14
the story itself was good but there was way too much detail in certain scenes. I found myself skipping pages just to get on with it. The series is great but susan grant lowers it. She just lost my intreast. I would never read any of her books again.
Fighter Pilot Wakes up in the Future and Finds herself in a Dangerous Love Triangle .......2005-12-29
THE LEGEND OF BANZAI MAGUIRE by Susan Grant is the first in a five-book futuristic romance series written by four different authors. The gist of the story is that U.S. air force pilot Bree "Banzai" Maguire is shot down over North Korea, captured, and put into bio-statis. But when she wakes up, she discovers it's 176 years later, and two hunky men - one a prince, the other a treasure hunter - are fighting over possessing her.
I really enjoyed the author's description of the future, as well as her realistic and fascinating tidbits about military life. I also thought the story was engaging and attention-grabbing, especially when the love triangle was thrown in. It was fun reading!
However, a couple things kept me from giving the book 5 stars. For one, the initial set-up (in which Bree and her wingman are shot down and captured) takes 50-plus pages to describe. For another, the "legend" part wasn't clear to me. If the legend was supposed to be about pilots gone missing, then wouldn't the legend be about them both, not just Bree? Also, Bree hadn't done anything before being shot down that merited hero-worship status. Nor did she think to question anyone as to why they were hero worshiping her, which frankly I thought odd. Finally, the ending was too abrupt to satisfy and the epilogue actually detracted me. I'd WANTED to read the next book immediately ... until I read the epilogue. Now I'm not so excited.
Anyway, it's still an interesting book ... but ONLY IF you are prepared to read the rest of the books in the series, because THE LEGEND OF BANZAI MAGUIRE definitely doesn't stand alone as a "happily ever after" romance.
***The "2176 series" includes book #1 THE LEGEND OF BANZAI MAGUIRE by Susan Grant, #2 DAY OF FIRE by Kathleen Nance, #3 THE SHADOW RUNNERS by Liz Maverick, #4 THE POWER OF TWO by Patti O'Shea, and #5 THE SCARLET EMPRESS by Susan Grant.***

Customer Reviews:
Super Reader.......2007-08-31
This was pretty good, for a movie book, explained some things, went into detail. It was definitely worth it for Buckaroo fans.
During the movie, it can be hard to tell who is who, or how does what, or can do what. This fills you in nicely, as well as information on the Irregulars and other bits associated with the great man. Not to mention his musical stylings.
Wherever You Go, There You Are.......2006-05-20
When I first came on the pulp paperback of this film some years back, I thought it was too dense to read and passed on it. Having since seen the film more than twenty times (It's my favorite movie) I decided to read this reissued version. The story is told from the point of view of Reno in the first person, which kills any dramatic action since it's all after the fact. It's very unevenly written and also very intriguing. Although I figured that Earl Mac Rauch wrote this book first and then adapted it to the film script, I think now that it's a novelization tie-in made after the film.
But that doesn't explain why certain parts are so different from the movie. In the film, there's a conflict (to oversimplify) between the (good) black lectroids and the (bad) red lectroids. In the book there are only bad lectroids, the good ones instead being called Adders. The book also continually refers to another book or episode of B. Banzai and friends called Extradition from Hell, another evocatively named pulp-fiction adventure which begs to hit the screen. Viewers of the film are aware that it ends with an ad for the next serial as it were, Buckaroo Banzai and the World Crime League, of which there is no mention in this book. The introduction seems to say that another volume of stories is forthcoming, and hopefully some sort of cinematic sequel.
This is one of two books I can think of where the film is better than the book based on what it chose to leave out. The other is Forrest Gump, drawn from the book by Winston Groom. But for one exception, I think the Buckaroo Banzai film is very well edited in relation to this book. For instance, the gruesome torture scene of Penny Priddy in the book is replaced in the movie with a nearly comic one, and the intriguing philosophies given all through the book are worked implicitly into the movie rather than being discussed at length.
The real miracle is the film's tone, which is why I think people keep watching it. It's light without being flippant, about real things without being weighty, fantastic but not randomly so, moving without being sentimental. The book doesn't have this light tone, but it does delve into ideas that are mind-boggling and mind-expanding. It starts out almost unreadably bad, with an odd kind of stilted syntax and deliberately archaic language, but it ends up excitingly well.
The one exception where the book could improve on the film is in an alternate (longer) beginning which shows rather than tells the Buckaroo backstory. I had the Special Edition DVD which includes an alternate beginning in the Special Features section. But I highly recommend instead the Special Collector's Edition DVD which allows you to select a longer edition of the entire film with the new beginning. In my opinion this makes the film a lot better. It's the definitive The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension, and it's truly an amazing film.
This edition of the book says it's being released to coincide with the Special Collector's Edition DVD of the film, and this DVD really is that much better. But even on the Special Edition there's an interview with director W.D. Richter and a pilot for a TV show done in CGI that even now would find a huge audience. I join with about a million fans of this film asking why not more Buckaroo now?
Beyond the 8th Dimension..........2006-03-02
This is not an adaptation of the cult film. While the movie spotlighted some of the more entertaining aspects (and an outstanding cast), the novel itself draws life from the thoughts and experiences of its diverse characters.
The story is told in the first person by Reno, Team Banzai's chonographer, who relates events, back-story, witness accounts and even a few science lessons in order to give the reader as complete a picture as possible. The side-bars may seem to complicate things, but the deeper one reads into this book, the more often you begin to wonder if it is a true story. So effective and all-consuming is the narrative--At times like a documentary.
To be certain, there are villains and heros... incredible scientific devices... outlandish individuals who are more colourful than the spectrum. But throughout, we are exposed to profound philosophy, socio-political commentary and even a few rules for living.
Witness the principals promoted by Buckaroo through radio and comic books: "The Five Stresses ... decorum, courtesy, public health, discipline, and morals. The Four Beauties ... beauties of mind, language, behavior, and environment. The Three Loves ... love of others, justice, and love of freedom." [p.20]
Or Buckaroo's paradox: "A scientist, like a warrior, must cherish no view... A 'view' is the outcome of intellectual processes, whereas creativity, like swordsmanship, requires not neutrality, or indifference, but to be of no mind whatever." [p.133]
And some fun with alien names: "...some Lectroids carried regular last names taken at random from a Manhattan telephone book, whereas others ... were evidently translations of Lectroid pictographs... (John Icicle Boy, John Repeat Dance, John Careful Walker, John Thorny Stick, John Mud Head, John Small Berries, John Ya Ya, John Take Cover, John Many Jars) [p.148]
Granted, there is a level of idealism present. But is it so terrible to imagine an organization that strives for "a better world" and is made strong by its many and varied members representing every walk of life? So powerful was this novel that it inspired me to create an electronic public forum for discussion, debate and information exchange in the days before the "World Wide Web."
Not for those seeking light reading, "Buckaroo Banzai" delivers a world and people so real and sincere that you cannot help but ponder the source. I was left feeling empowered and eager to snatch up my chances to make a difference.
[Please note, the text above was originally posted February 11, 1998. It was written based on the first publication of this book (ISBN 0671540580) which accompanied the 1984 film. I have not verified the citation page #s for the 2001 printing. I am the original author. Back then Amazon allowed anonymous reviews.]
Watermelon explained.......2005-07-31
Kenneth Peel "Gurgeh", your answer to the watermelon scene can be found on the commentary of the movie (or the documentary, I can't remember which at this very moment). It was no great mystery afterall, it was just the filmmakers testing the studio heads. They wanted to see if the studio bosses were paying attention or ignoring them.
I love this film.
If it's not one thing, it's another.......2005-04-28
My memory for past events in my life are usually vague and hazy. However, I can remember with vivid clarity purchasing this book over 20 years ago (at the age of 15). I was on vacation, looking for something to read, and so I grabbed this book off a rack at the grocery store. I have never read anything quite like it. How to classify it? A sci-fi comic existenialist romantic action thriller? But that leaves so much out . . . so I will just quote the book: "if it's not one thing, it's another."
It has remained my favorite book ever since. But I would recommend this book only to quirky, odd people like me. I'm thrilled to see the other reviews - - for the first time in 20 years, I know I am not alone.

Customer Reviews:
Banzai Girl by Jinky Coronado.......2007-08-23
I really enjoyed reading every issue of Banzai Girl that was published. It has everything I look for in a comic book or Manga. It has great stories with plenty of action and the art work is some of the best that I've seen anywhere. Now that it's being published by Arcana as Banzai Girls, I can once again enjoy the all new adventures of Jinky and her friends.
Empassioned Imagination-All Out War in the Lingerie Boutique.......2004-07-02
A fresh look at being a school girl, through the eyes of a woman who's been there and. . .well, done SOME of that, at least. The perfect book for that occasional day where you wish to kick back and let your imagination off it's leash. This one stands out among the many books crowding the rack. I have yet to hear a negetive review.
Banzai Girl a must buy!.......2004-06-21
Well this Trade Paperback is wonderfully illustrated by Jinky Coronado its about her real life adventures as a school girl but exaggerated. It is a fun story as you see the cute Jinky facing off against various monsters. If you like beautiful girls, action and adventure with some thrills and chills mixed in you'll enjoy the adventures of Jinky and her friends.
Great compilation.......2004-06-18
Banzai Girl creator Jinky Coronado's four comic books and initial annual are packaged in a quality compilation that also includes special features on her life, artwork, and guest drawings. For fans of this beautiful and talented lady, this is a rewarding collection of her work. To those who are new to the world of Banzai Girl, she offers a refreshing new concept; a diamond waiting to be discovered by much of the comic book world. The story is based on the creator/artist's life- a young woman whose talents match her grace and appreciation to her growing legion of fans. In the stories, our short-skirted, pigtailed heroine battles mythical legends of the Philippines, including shadow whisperers, a giant snakeman, and even a female vampire that can split its body in two at the waist. As pretty as this little lady is in the comic book, she really knows how to handle herself in a fight.
Customer Reviews:
a must have for the true banzai fan........2007-05-14
even if you've seen the movie, you must own the book.there are slight differences in the movie version, typical of a book to movie production.it's worth it get all the info, and a little more insight into the story.

The weirdest genre-transcending fiction around........1998-01-18
Jack of all trades Buckaroo Banzai (Scientist, rock musician, race car driver and much more) and his team of crack (or cracked) specialists, the Hong Kong Cavaliers, battles an alien invasion. The aliens, posing as military-industrial complex members, try to return to their own dimension, but their own ineptness stands even more in their way than earth's heroes. There are many parodies of science fiction larger-than-life heroes out there, but this one is made so special by its narrative perspective (one of Banzais team members) and the thoroughly believable advancement of a thorughly unbelievable plot which makes for a reality-warping mixture. One of the best books around for SF fans AND critics.

Book Description
General, minister of war, prime minister, and unrepentant ultranationalist, Hideki Tojo (1884-1948) was the most powerful leader in the Japanese government during World War II. From October 1941 to July 1944 he held unquestioned control, advocating and setting in motion the attack on Pearl Harbor as well as pushing forward the Japanese offensives in China, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific. The author examines Tojo's life against the backdrop of increasing Japanese militarism-Civil war, political assassinations, and coup d'états-and uses exclusive interviews with Tojo's wife to illuminate the spartan, single-minded, incorruptible personality of the man who chose war rather than succumb to U.S.-induced economic strangulation. From the initial victories, through the later severe defeats and Tojo's resignation, to his thwarted suicide attempt, trial as a war criminal, and execution, no other book offers such a clear and compelling portrait.

More About Tojo's Times Than Tojo.......2001-04-11
Browne has written an excellent summary of Japanese governmental history during the first half of the twentieth century rather than a biography of Tojo. Pages go by with no mention of the biography's purported subject. When Tojo does receive attention, it is usually a bare summary of his actions. There is little attempt to get inside his mind or to provide personal context. Similarly, the photos section has relatively few photos of Tojo. The book is very good but its title ought to be "Japan: Government 1900-1945."

This book will assume that readers have already mastered the basic functions of the product and they now want to master the more advanced security and VPN features of the product. Written by a team of Check Point Certified Instructors (the most prestigious Check Point certification) this book will provide readers with a complete reference book to Check Point NG and advanced case studies that illustrate the most difficult to implement configurations. Although not a Study Guide, this book will cover all of the objectives on Check Point's CCSE Exam.
Customer Reviews:
Completely uninformative.......2007-02-11
I received this book as a gift and I had a hard time lying when they asked me a few weeks later if I liked it. It was completely uninformative and written poorly. I was told it got good reviews but I'm not suprised a co-author gave it good reviews.
Excellent Reference.......2003-06-05
Even as a contributing author for this book I have found it to be an incredible reference for advanced configuration options. NG FP3 incorporated changes in both the naming conventions and operational nuances affecting your environment. Many of these areas are given limited or no coverage as part of Check Point Training for the CCSE or CCSE+ certifications.
I own every Check Point book and reference; this one rules.......2003-05-21
I have to agree with a previous reviewer. This book is great, particularly the coverage of VPN installations (two chapters covering pretty much all you need). In addition, chapter 6 (high availability and clustering) was great. Excellent material on SecurePlatform, SmartCenter. If you are running Check Point, you need this book.
Great Check Point book.......2003-05-14
I used the first Syngress CP NG book a lot last year when I was first getting started, and I don't think I would have survived without it. Now that I've got CP up and running, I wanted to get into more advanced VPN, HA and clustering stuff. I liked the first book so much I figured this book would take me to the next level. I was right! This book goes way beyond anything that's covered in the other books. The chapter on clustering/HA with Check Point and Nokia is worth the price of the book all by itself. If you want to know everything there is to know about Check Point, read this book.
