Essential Reference book for British film fans !.......2004-07-13
Until now, British film fans have always had to make do with rather slim pickings in the big international reference books on cinema, the likes of Halliwell and Thomson, where British performers and filmmakers are often given short shrift, and that is when they are granted inclusion: more often than not they are completely ignored. But here, with Brian McFarlane's impressively weighty Encyclopedia, we have the very first major reference text devoted entirely to a national cinema that may be frequently maligned (and no more so than on its home territory) but which has actually made a significant contribution to world cinema. Aided by an impressive list of contributors McFarlane has drawn up a staggeringly large list of all the movers and shakers in British cinema from its nineteenth century origins to the present day, giving equal attention to those behind the scenes as to those in front of the camera. There's clearly an attempt to avoid auteurist bias by giving equal room to writers, composers, casting directors, cinematographers, producers, costume designers, continuity personnel and editors alongside the directors. This desire to give credit to those often neglected in film history continues in the entries on actors. Searching for stars, we can find neat summaries of the careers and personas of all the best-known British ones, from Betty Balfour and Ivor Novello to Kate Winslet and Ewan McGregor; but perhaps more importantly, there's a wealth of material on the unsung heroes of British cinema, the battalions of obscure character actors who have helped to give British films their specific dramatic texture. One of the delights of the material on the half-forgotten faces that populate British films is how it frequently goes beyond the strictly biographical and sparks into life with a few beautifully chosen adjectives, a telling little anecdote or a quotation of one of the actor's typical lines of dialogue. Like all good reference books, you go to it to look up one thing and find yourself still browsing through it an hour later. One gets the sense of a real person with a distinctive voice behind the monumental enterprise, and that voice is undoubtedly McFarlane's. One of the most useful aspects of the book, alongside the entries on important individuals and organizations, is the inclusion of short essays on general topics such as (to pick a few at random) sex and sexuality, rural life, Europeans in British film, crime films, black representation, and travel and transport. These provide an ideal springboard for further study and they also act as a powerful reminder of the diversity of a film culture too often labelled dull, over-literary and emotionally frozen. There's ample evidence here that there's much more to British cinema than its buttoned-up reputation might suggest.

Great Book!.......2002-07-06
Marvellously comprehensive, with quite a diverse range of topics relating to horror and people who are associated with the genre, and other such entries.
A pretty handy guide for horror film buffs, as this is the major category it covers (couldn't expect more from a "BFI" (British Film Institute) Companion though, could you? :-) ).
On the downside, some of the entries can be a little overcrowded with film titles, but good for the completist, i guess.
I'd love to see further editions, with more up-to-date info (it WAS printed in '96, afterall.)
Defintately a recommended buy.
valuable reference book.......1999-03-03
As a writer, I have found Newman's reference book helpful. It includes subjects not addressed elsewhere and does a good job of explaining subjects that have been widely covered.

Third-Party Paper.......2007-04-15
Since Nintendo came out with the Wii last year, there have been a lot of good games for it like The Legend Of Zelda Twilight Princess. However, when it comes to maps and strategy guides, you can often find it as a hit or a miss for Third-Party companies like Prima with those guides. Especially with Nintendo's latest Mario adventure Super Paper Mario. Although the guide is sometimes handy, it just doesn't detail enough information from the maps, which at times makes it very frustraing to play on the Wii. I honestly suggest you get the Player's Guide Nintendo made instead. It might be a few bucks more, but it is much more worth getting, especially if you want to master Bowser and crew.

Prima Guide.......2007-05-08
Prima's guide for Pokemon Colosseum isn't nearly as good as the other guides. However it does give tips on the pokemon trainers you have to battle. What level they are at, type, and prize money. Which you don't get from Nintendo's guide. If just the tip on the pokemon trainers this guide is good, but for everything else Nintendo's walkthrough is alot better.
I remember when the Prima guides for Pokemon games were actually GOOD.......2007-03-17
Prima used to make the best guide on the market for the Pokemon games. Their guide for Red & Blue was phenomenal, and their guide for Gold & Silver was really good, if a bit aggravating (They frequently wouldn't tell you what Pokemon certain trainers had), but since then the quality has gone way down with each guide, until you get to this piece of junk.
Now don't get me wrong, this guide has its uses. But it's missing a lot of information and is filled with inaccuracies, especially with the trainer lineups. It's really handy to know what Pokemon the trainers you're facing will have ahead of time, but not when that information is innaccurate. Sometimes you get lucky and the only problem is that it's the wrong graphic (which happens seemingly every other page), but other times it says a trainer has a Pokemon that he doesn't. There are also some trainers that the guide doesn't even mention, as if they don't exist. The guide says to heal and save in this one part, but it neglects to mention that you have to face a trainer in order to do that.
And don't get me started on the battle reccommendations. There a few lines about what moves to use under each trainer's box, but this information is just plain wrong half the time. It tells you that a certain type is effective against certain Pokemon when it's not. To get a bit technical, if you send out a fire-type Pokemon against a Lombre like the guide says you should in several places, then you deserve to lose that Pokemon to Surf.
Still, it isn't completely useless. The trainer information is handy when it's accurate, and there's a complete Pokedex in the back that has all the moves for all the Pokemon you can get within the game. The listing of items near the back is useless, though, because it doesn't tell you where to get those items, which is especially maddening for the TM's.
Because it does have its uses, I rate it a 2 out of 5.
A Prima Strategy Guide Not To Be Missed.......2004-03-29
I'm getting the game Pokemon Colosseum and the Bonus Disk. As usual I get lost early in the game and Ta-Da!!! I reach for my Prima Strategy Guide and next thing you know I am playing the end of game extras. This is one Prima Strategy Guide not to be missed.
This Book's Great!.......2004-03-15
This Book Is A Very Great Book! I Suggest You Buy It. Well It Is The Official Guide Book Isn't It?! It Has All The Infomation You Need Like Walkthroughs For The RPG And A Pokedex In The Back.

Useless for Xbox version.......2006-06-06
I used Prima's guide for Ghost Recon: Island Thunder and found it an invaluable resource in getting through the tough spots of that game. So naturally when I picked up Advanced Warfighter for Xbox, I got the Prima guide too.
What a disappointment. There is absolutely no useful information contained in this book to help you get through the game. None. How the authors manage to ramble on and on for dozens of pages with dozens of pretty screen shots and tell you nothing useful is beyond me.
Of course, I can only speak confidently of my experience with the Xbox portions of this guide. Maybe if you have an Xbox 360, that portion of the guide actually is helpful (that wouldn't surprise me). My recommendation for Xbox players is to enjoy GRAW (it's awesome) but don't bother with the guide. Xbox 360 players, judge for yourselves.

Not sure what the fuss is about..........2006-08-04
I read the reviews here and hesitated to buy this guide. So I went into a game store and looked at it in person. It had everything I expected it to have: monster descriptions, spell descriptions, ability descriptions, campaign walkthroughs, and even some stuff I didn't expect, like what all the "Week of..."s meant.
It's certainly a grand improvement on what the game's rulebook gives you. Now I know in mechanical terms what items like "Battle Dive" and "Shield Bash" mean, and can use them properly--not hit a button and not know how the outcome was determined.
I still don't know what a Crystal Dragon is yet, but maybe it will turn up. :)
Only graphics were improved.......2006-08-02
The game looks nice but except from the graphics nothing else has been changed from the previous version. You should by this game only if you missed playing heroes but do not expect much from it.
Pretty disappointing.......2006-07-21
With a complex game like Heroes you want some good fold out tables and charts of the different troop-types and heroes. You dont get that. The entire book is in black and white. Most of the guide is simply a walkthrough of the Campaign missions. Bleh. That would have been fine to include that but fans of this game want tables and charts in a readable format. Very unfortunate how bad this "guide" is. I regret buying it.
OK, but............2006-07-19
Overall the book is useful, but like most of Prima's game guides it is a mass of errors and typos. They really ought to consider hiring an editor.
Full of errors, based on Beta version of game.......2006-06-04
Don't buy this. There's more accurate information online about HOMM5. This is the poorest Game Guide I've ever bought.

OK.......2006-03-09
I bought this guide hoping,as if falesly claims, to give the complete stats for the weapons in the game.
Well,if complete stats for weapons means, "this gun is heavy",then I suppose its true. Forget about rating the damage or the rate of fire for each gun - these things are NOT listed! But it will tell you what kind of sight the gun utilizes. Worthless.
The walkthrough and maps are good. Just don't get your hopes up to find out about the "Stars of the Game", the guns.
Im so disappointed....
