2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2005-09-24

This is a very basic book - if you want to configure as they outline it probably will work, but if you have anything not on their path, it won't. In addition, there was no overview at the beginning of each chapter explaining what was the objective of the chapter, which made it quite hard to figure out whether you should follow the steps outline. This really limited its value.

I wanted to connect three computers wirelessly together, share information and print on a printer attached to one computer. Based upon the title and description of the book it should have contained that information, but didn't.

1 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2005-09-21

I love other "teach yourselft VISUALLY" books, but this is not one of them.
the reason is that this book isn't detailed enough. in fact, it's content are mostly about introducing readily availble wireless technologies (e.g. bluetooth phones, micro-wave wireless, AP, WI-FI A, B, G,). it doesn't teach the readers how to configure for wireless securities, networking connectivities or explain the functions (e.g.deMilitary Zone) in the router.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introductory Book.......2005-02-21

If you're a novice at wireless networks like me, you'll love this book. This book will give you all the important information and tasks you need to successfully set up a wireless netork. You'll learn what you need to know from an maximum of visuals and a minimum of dense, techno-speak.

3 out of 5 stars Incomplete and TOO visual!.......2004-11-18

Maybe a "Visual" format is really too much here. Do we really need to see a picture of a computer with folders flying out of it? The screen shots were great, but there were far too many pointless pictures. This book also did not even mention channels! C'mon...thats a pretty important concept I wanted to know more about. the book also failed to mention wireless bridging hardware or even considerations when setting up a network with several possibly overlapping access points. Too basic of a book, probably only suited for the home networker.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide.......2004-09-18

Of the hundreds of computer/math/science/engineering books I have, this has got to be one of the prettiest. The screen shots are in full color and are very clear and legible; would that other computer books be so pleasant to read! This book is a step-by-step guide for setting up your wireless network painlessly. Get it, regardless of your level of computer skill; I run a systems engineering company, Transpower Corporation, in metropolitan Philadelphia--so I'm in the business, and even I learned a few new tricks.

    Book Description

Logistics is a $700 billion industry in the USA and is the second largest employer of college graduates. Logistics costs account for nearly 30% of the sales dollar, and logistics activities are essential to satisfying the ever- changing customer demand in terms of variety and availability. Today the need for cutting edge, sophisticated logistics practices has never been greater. This unique text is squarely focused on the key activities within the functional areas of logistics and transportation, with emphasis placed on the quantitative treatment of the design and planning issues in logistics. In scope, Logistics and Transportation comprehensively covers almost all the elements of the supply chain. Moreover, it includes a number of topics that are generally not covered by most popular logistics texts. These include functional areas such as: vendor selection, inventory models with inventory costs, advanced transportation models, logistics metrics, and latest trends in logistics. The text is primarily designed for use in the classroom by senior undergraduate and graduate-level students. It is also a useful resource for practicing transportation and logistics professionals. Readers will appreciate the references for recommended further reading, related training aids and problem sets given at the end of each chapter, as well as the two comprehensive logistics cases presented at the end of the text.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great introduction to logistics planning.......2006-02-27

The author introduces key areas of logistics succintly yet effectively and the discussion of key principles is reinforced by means of practical examples throughout each chapter. The book successfully combines the qualitative description of core logistical processes with introductions to key quantitative logistics planning models. This is something very few textbooks manage to achieve in a palatable fashion.

The book may be short compared to many other textbooks on logistics but each page is packed with useful data and information. Overcomplicated powerpoint-style flow diagrams are avoided unless strictly necessary, which is a welcome change.

Above all, the author has worked in real-life logistics planning environments (e.g. CSX) and, in my opinion, this gives the book a clear edge over similar textbooks written by professors that have never worked outside academia.

Overall, great for anybody looking for a qualitatively as well as quantitatively strong introduction to logistics and well worth the expense.

4 out of 5 stars excellent book for starter.......2000-03-26

good book with concepts nicely introduced. Interesting topics in advanced tranportation areas

2 out of 5 stars For the price you pay, it might not be worthwhile.......1999-07-05

This book provides a basic understanding and overview of logistics. If you are looking for something more advance and probably sophisticated, the 320 pages are unlikely to satisfy your needs.

      Book Description

Rapid developments in information technology have many implications for the organisation and management of transport and logistics. Information technology has transcended the borders of the individual firm. Management control and decision making throughout the supply chain has therefore become an important focus of attention for management and for academia. Information systems are needed which can support that control and decision making.

The 20 specially commissioned chapters presented here study applications of information systems to logistics and transportation systems. Divided into two complementary sections, "Research Directions" and "Perspectives from Practice", this original and current work will be of value both to researchers and to practitioners at the interface of these dynamic and growing fields.

        Book Description

DYNAMIC FLEET MANAGEMENT will focus on real time management of a distribution system. This means that when a dynamic event occurs within the distribution chain, action must be taken in "real-time." The book will integrate the latest results in system design, algorithm development and system implementation, to capture the state-of-the art research and application trends. While much of the research in this area of transportation problems have almost exclusively concentrated on carrying out static plans on optional distribution conditions, this book will examine those problems when some dynamic or unplanned even occurs within the transport or network system. It will focus specifically on these cases and integrate the latest results in systems, routing algorithms and case studies where information (a dynamic event) is revealed to the decision maker in a real-time manner.

The book’s purpose is to investigate and analyze the emerging field of Dynamic Fleet Management from several perspectives. The book includes chapters that present the systemic background of important dynamic fleet management areas such as goods dispatching, couriers, rescue and repair services, taxi cab services, etc. Algorithmic approaches are outlined that are able to process real time information and produce acceptable-quality solutions in modest computing times. In addition, the book includes real-life case studies that describe the solution to actual distribution problems by combining systemic and algorithmic approaches.

From the supplier: Randolph County, NC, successfully uses the Transportation Information Management System (TIMS) from Education Logistics Inc (ELI, Missoula, MT) to reduce buses required, bus operating time and labor and other related costs by optimizing the routing of school buses for all of the Randolph County Schools. Previously, the lack of central control of school transportation systems resulted in substantial inefficiencies and excess costs. The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction has a statewide license for the TIMS software and provides it free to the state's 133 school districts. The software consists of four main modules: Geocoding, which encodes the street maps of a school district; Transportation, which maintains routing and scheduling data; Optimization, which enables the performance of route and schedule "what if" analyses; and Boundary Planning, which provides student demographics. Details of the functioning and use of the modules are discussed. The effectiveness of and savings produced by TIMS in Randolph County and in the state as a whole are described.

              Description:
This study aims to justify a systematic decision process for constructing a desirable logistics tracking system, based on information integrity risk associated. It consists of four interrelated executions of analyzing risk, assessing risk, prioritizing mitigations, and selecting mitigations. Failure Mode Effect Analysis, risk triangle, and cost-effect indicators are organized to provide a system solution, calibrated using focus group meeting and group decision process. In the empirical study, Automatic Vehicle Location system was initiated to track the container movements in a Taiwanese marine port. But the justification recommends adding four effective risk measures to finalize the system. The justified logistics tracking system is concluded to be more effective than the current manual escort in smuggling prevention, i.e. information risk reduced by 62%. Besides, direct cost saving of the carriers is secured, together with the considerable macro benefits derived from fastened physical flow and improved trade security, to increase the project feasibility.
