Book Description

Written by a Grand Master, this guide isolates basic elements and illustrates them through Master and Grand Master games, breaking down the mystique of strategy into easy-to-understand ideas. More than a lesson in fundamentals, it illustrates the value of acquiring small, permanent advantages and saving the attack for later.

5 out of 5 stars Simple Chess by Michael Stean.......2007-08-21

Simply the best! Important elements of Chess Strategy explained lucidly. A truly great book that introduces chess strategy to the masses. A must have book for the intermediate player.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing book!.......2007-01-15

I received this book in the mail and thought "another chess book for temporary amusement" -- then, to the shelf it would go to collect dust for years. I'm happy to say I was WAY wrong on that line of thinking!!

This is the most absorbing chess book I have ever read!

That said, it is not for beginners (stated many times before by others), and it is not for players who only enjoy tactics and suicidal attacks. This is the essence of positional chess in one book-- captured and explained in a very impressive manner by Stean.

My opinion is subjective -- I love positonal play and believe that's the reason to play the game! But I've already learned so many things (outposts, minority attack, etc.); my eyes have been opened to these "secrets" like never before. I feel like I have at least a small understanding of what GM's are looking for in their games, from a positional standpoint.

Also, I like the fact that the games are more recent than My System (which is very good)-- you get to see the Siclian and King's Indian and others, not just the Ruy Lopez and QGD of the early 1900's.

It's hard to put into words why this book is so choice, but I wish it was 500 pages-- I could live as a recluse with this book and a board!

To all my future opponents-- please ignore this book and stick with tactics and your kamikaze style play-- that might make our future battles so much easier for me!

Thank you Michael Stean-- a fantasic effort on your part!! Too bad it took me this long to discover it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, but there are some typos..........2006-10-04

I agree with all the positive observations made by the other reviewers, but would like to extend the list of typos started by Dr. Salawu. Here are the errors I've found, with page numbers as they appear in the 2002 Dover algebraic edition:

p.15, variation following move 22: "(23...Kb3" should be "(23...Kc6"
p.33, 6th para: "conceding the d4 square" should be "conceding the d5 square"
p.47, 2nd para: the omitted 21st Black move in the variation is Ne5
p.52: "7. Bxc3" should be "7. bxc3"
p.96, variation following move 31: the move after 32. Nxf4 should be Rc1+
p.102, 1st para: "Bb7" should be "Bg7"
p.129, 1st para: "all kings" should be "all kinds"
p.129, last para: Black's 12th move in the second variation should be Rh5, not Rh4
p.158: Black's 4th move was Bb7, not Bg7
p.160, 1st line: "28. Bc5!" should be "28. Bc5+!"

4 out of 5 stars Good book on strategy but not simple for beginners.......2006-09-11

By the title you might think this is a book written for beginners. It is not a simple book at all, yet a good one for the non-beginner. It is a book on strategy, looking at things such as various uses of opening files and minority attacks. More positional ideas, where a beginner or even someone just beyond the beginner stage should be looking at books on tactics, chess traps and going over some of the books that have games with each move analyzed.
However, if you are looking at books like "My System" then also consider getting "Simple Chess" just don't be mislead by the title!

5 out of 5 stars Simpley the Best!.......2006-08-26

After only several casual hours of study I learned more about strategy and planning than I could have ever imagined. I have tediously worked my way through other books (Lessons in Chess Strategy, Silmans various works, Euwe and Kramers Middlegame series; these are all great books by the way) but have never felt instant gratification before. I agree with the other reviews, this is NOT A PRIMER. Its a small book, so several days is all you need to absorb this fantastic book. Very Highly recommended by an improving player. Cheers!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars You want to learn checkmates...?.......2006-11-10

...this is your book! Or at least maybe the one to start learning this 'art'. Lots of examples of simple and not so simple checkmates in one or two movements that will make it possible for you to find the best way to finish the game in a favorable way for you. If you feel you don't know how to checkmate your opponent, this is your book.

4 out of 5 stars Good Beginner's Book to Practice Checkmates.......2006-07-20

This is like a workbook of checkmates. It is a perfect book for a beginner and has hundreds of simple (very basic) checkmate positions to find the checkmate in. I like this a lot better than "Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess" because it has a lot more problems. There are not a lot of books that teach basic checkmates in a workbook form so get this book if you are a real beginner before going to the next step where I recommend "1001 Brilliant Ways to Checkmate" and "Winning Chess Traps for Juniors".
My teacher in school uses this book to set up problems for us to solve!

4 out of 5 stars Improve your chess.......2005-11-04

Yes, it's simple and basic. But for a weak or new player, the drills are invaluable. I've seen mates that I never would have noticed except for what I learned in this book.
It will also help you see how the pieces work together. If you're rated under 1200 this book can help you.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the beginner.......2004-05-10

I bought this book a long time ago and kept it around because I felt it would be useful later. It has proven to be. My son is just starting to learn chess and for his individual study I have him working through the book. The progressively harder problems have proven a challenge for him exactly as I intended. Many of the other books out there on checkmating are above his level and he would quickly get discouraged. This one is just right: challenging enough where he doesn't get bored but not so hard he just gives up.

If you're new to chess, a casual player, or just one who likes running through chess problems quickly, this is a good book. The answers are at the bottom of the pages, so there's no flipping between two different sections of the book. A slip of paper or a bookmark and you can keep the answer hidden until you've made your guess. I would prefer all puzzle books to be written this way.

5 out of 5 stars A core skill-builder for our school chess club.......2004-03-12

Our small year-round school (3rd-12th grade) has used this book regularly since the chess club was founded. New club members join every quarter but are generally not strong players, so they seldom reach checkmate opportunities in club play.

We give each student a double-page spread (4 problems) to solve without marking up the book: we cover the answers, then students must point out the checkmate to an adult or a stronger player. This way the book can be used again and again. Solving 4 puzzles or 8 in the course of a club meeting is a nice short exercise for even the most hyper students.

Students start out with the 1-move puzzles and move on to 2-moves as they get stronger. This practical, repeated exposure to basic mates starts showing up in their own games.

I've seen a 10th grader improve his skills by regular practice with the book, but have also used it successfully with my 6-year-old daughter (who plays USCF tournaments). I definitely see a correlation in beginners who use these puzzles often and their growing skill in tournament chess. Of course, as the other reviewers have pointed out, this is only one element of chess training.

5 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise - concentrates on basic principles.......2006-02-22

How often do you find phrases like "made simple" in the title of a book, only to find yourself out of your depth after a few pages? Well, you can rest assured. this book really does stick to the simple things. It tackles the end game in terms of concepts and plans, concentrating on basic principles, which can be applied in a practical way to our own endgame.

After an opening chapter on pawnless endings, we have a chapter on King and Pawn endings, a long section on Rook and Pawn endings, the most common type of ending encountered in practical play, followed by chapters on Knight endings, Bishop endings, Bishop and Knight endings, and Queen endings.

The second part of the book consists of 100 exercises, all taken from practical play, to test to what extent the reader can apply the knowledge gained in the first part. What is surprising is the number of times really simple endings occur in practical play. The 100 positions include a great many taken from GM games. I was pleasantly surprised at how often, after only a few seconds thought, I was able to find the winning/drawing line simply by applying my newly acquired knowledge. But even more astounding was the number of times a GM or very strong player had failed to find the right method. Food for thought here!

There have been many books on the ending written over the years, including a good number in the present millennium, but in terms of value for money I reckon that this one takes some beating. It is yet another example of my oft repeated dictum that GMs are not the best people to write for less able players.

This review first appeared in the magazine En Passant.

5 out of 5 stars For those of us that need help in the endgame.......2004-07-03

How good is it when the author takes time to write conceptually what's going on, place a diagram with arrows, circles and whatever aids are needed to clarify his point and then explain clearly what is it that he wants to do with the position? And how great is it when after five moves the author shows you what happened afterwards with another diagram and repeats the process of analyzing the position and showing you how to play it? I used to think that Concise Chess Endgames was the best way to start to study the endgame but I was wrong... This is the book! This is the book to start studying endgames! I consider that the author must be a superb teacher because he uses all resources available to him to teach. Why can't books on such an arid topic as the endgame be as illustrative as this one?

      Book Description

Chess is an easy game to learn, but a difficult one to master. A study of tactical play and some practical experience can get a player to a standard where they are skilful enough to prevent both checkmate and material loss. However, to advance from here to a higher level it is necessary to tackle positional play. This can appear daunting. However, once the principal strategic ideas are recognized, then everything becomes clearer and the game becomes simpler. In this book Grandmaster and experienced chess writer John Emms provides the improving player with the fundamental knowledge required to enter very game with confidence. This book offers a complete introduction to chess strategy, important positional ideas and is ideal for club and tournament players. (6 x 9, 144 pages, diagrams)

      Customer Reviews:

      3 out of 5 stars Reasonable.......2002-03-02

This book aspires to explain the positional basics. The title, "Simple Chess", is the same as a much earlier work by Michael Stean published in 1978. Indeed Emms cites Stean's book in the introduction.

Chapters in Emms' book cover ideas such as outposts, the two bishops, and the isolani. Many of the examples he gives are taken from his own games.

The problem is that many of the ideas are covered in other books (e.g. the two bishops are covered in Watson's "Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy"; similarly, the isolated pawn is covered comprehensively in Baburin's "Winning Pawn Structures"). Nor, I feel, does Emms' book shed any new light on these ideas. The notes are all right, but nothing spectacular.

In contrast, Stean's "Simple Chess" is a classic and both the analysis and discussion are exemplary (It is, however, extremely hard to find this book).I can't help but feel that Emms's "Simple Chess" is but a pale imitation of Stean's earlier work.

Who might find Emms' book useful? Perhaps a player in the 1400-1700 category, who either needs an introduction to positional ideas or doesn't wish to read more specialised literature.

      5 out of 5 stars Its Good!.......2002-01-22

The reason this book is so good is that it has over 50 modern grandmaster games (and some other positions) that are clearly explained through a blend of vaiations and prose. Its an outstanding book. I find the games to be quite illustrative of the themes one encounters in Silman's Reassess or other strategic works. In this book you get to see how these strategic ideas emerge from the openings and how they are often resolved tactically. The book is also of managable size and depth so the serious amateur with limited study time can work through it in a timely fashion. Top stuff.

In this entertaining and instructive book, an experience player and trainer provides a wealth of common-sense guidance on all aspects of chess. The first step towards self-improvement is self-assessment, and so Baker starts off with advice on assessing your own strengths and weaknesses. He then discusses how to form and improve your opening repertoire, and how to prepare for competitive play. Next comes advice on how to think at the board, how to cope with time-pressure, and chessboard psychology. A welcome feature is a summary of the most important rules of chess that competitive players must know. Baker also discusses how to learn from your games and how to study chess using books and computers, or with the help of trainer. A complete self-improvement course, this title includes tips and guidance on preparation and study, as well as all phases of practical play, and was written by an International Master who is also an Arbiter and a National Coach. Chris Baker is an experience player, who recently achieved his International Master title after many years of hard work. He is the trainer of the Welsh junior team and a fully-qualified arbiter. His first book, A Startling Chess Opening Repertoire, has proved extremely popular.

        3 out of 5 stars response.......2005-06-07

As the author of this book, I'd just like to say that it was never meant to be a comprehensive guide to chess. First and foremost, it is a math guide about problem-solving strategies. (Notice the series name?) While I certainly would have liked to have included "en passant," it simply did not fit the scope of the book. And game notation would have required an entire book of its own. I had 32 pages to work with, and math needed to take center stage. If you are a math teacher, I believe that you would appreciate the book much more than the previous reviewer does.

On a personal note, being a chess player myself, I think the book is a decent starter's guide for young chess players. All the basic men/moves are covered. And readers even get to follow several in-game scenarios to their logical ends. But hey, that's just my opinion.

ps, I had to give the book a rating to leave these comments. So i chose middle of the road.

1 out of 5 stars This Book Gives Little--Not Even the Complete Laws of Play.......2004-08-03

This book is priced higher (I paid $22.50) than many other books aimed at chess beginners, but it contains far less than most. I collect chess books, and have seen a wide range of quality, and nonetheless was surprised that this book does not even contain a full set of the rules of play. ("En passant" pawn captures are not covered, and while castling is mentioned, some of the requirements for castling are left out.) There is nothing on chess notation in this book; nor is there even a single chess game. Some books priced as low as $2 give the reader far, far more. NOT RECOMMENDED.

1 out of 5 stars Not Really About NLP.......2007-01-06

Chapters 1-4 seem to be restating a few basics of NLP in an unneccesarily complex and pointless sort of way. But once we reach chapter 5 NLP goes "out the window". Unfortunately, the following chapters are about leadership skills, problem solving, delegation, and trainiing on the job. These are all fine topics, but they're not really what I paid for nor are they addressed from an NLP perspective.

Basically, this book is unnecessarily complex and does a poor job of elucidating the finer points of NLP Modeling. I assumed it would expand on the basics of NLP and delve into the specifics of Modeling, but it doesn't. And to add insult to injury this book cost me $30.. and it's a paperback! Save your money.

The book on modeling by Dilts, who is probably now the best creator (2006) in the field of NLP. Although this book is not always concrete, it gives a very good and deep understanding on that process that stands as "the core of the core" of NLP.

If one would make of the great NLP modellers, Robert Dilts will certainly be part of the list. As well as he would make it to the top 5 list of NLP's great writers. Being one of the sudents of Dilt's Modeling & Epistemology class at NLP University, I'm quite familiar to Dilt's ideas about modelling. Much of the thinking explained in this explains the process I've been going through while writing "7 steps to emotional intelligence". The great point of NLP modelling is that it focusses on people that are excellent in a certain area (have a certain competence, supported by certain beliefs)- this book describes how you derive "the pattern that connects" by studying several experts in a domain. You get the "how" as well as examples of NLP modelling. The only problem is that it takes a considerable level of NLP skills before you can put this book into practice.

5 out of 5 stars The most generative topic in NLP..........2000-11-30

I ordered this book last year and have read it many times over. Robert succeeds in s-p-e-l-l-i-n-g out not only how to model, but how to detect patterns and replicate them. Patterns both cognitive and/or physical. He provides a framework upon which to organize all of your resources (NLP and otherwise) to get exactly what you want. What if you looked at the world in a way that everything around you was yours for the *learning* such as things which we label as 'talents', 'athletic skill', or even 'IQ'? What if everyone is truly an example of excellence, and you had the key to replicate that excellence?

I recently went to Rex Sikes' outstanding Master Prac / Modelling Seminar. This book is a welcome addition to the material presented by Rex. For those who haven't signed up for his seminar yet, this is the best book on modelling I've found.

Through modelling, the world is your oyster.

5 out of 5 stars The Heart of NLP.......2000-04-12

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) began with the modeling of the language patterns of three outstanding therapists by Richard Bandler and John Grinder. Since 1975 Robert Dilts has been one of the most fertile minds in consistently applying and creatively developing NLP. He has the rare gift in collaborating and co-creating with so many talented people in workshops and projects (to many of these he dedicates the present book). He is also able to model people in history through writings and biographies. His vision, productivity and leadership abilities have enriched NLP immensely and benefited humankind. The whole NLP community worldwide owes a great debt to him. This book is an excellent example of how Robert continues to be of service to anyone who wants to learn and use NLP. Here he has put together what many of us have been learning through his workshops in the past two decades, the key components of modeling. For those who have some background in NLP, it is helpful to master this book first. This is the first comprehensive account of the NLP modeling process. Other books only give piece-meal strategies. Once we grasp the whole view, if we go on to his previous books and reports on various modeling projects, we would have a much better sense of the kind of processes which are being applied. Tools for Dreamers, the 3 volumes of Strategies of Genius, Dynamic Learning, Skills for the Future, Visionary Leadership Skills will all help to concretise our assimilation of the modeling process--the heart of NLP.

In this unique audio seminar, international trainer of NLP and renown modeler of decision-making strategies and financial market wizards, Charles Faulkner, reveals how all ideas begin from intuition. For those who want to have greater access to their internal resources, this program offers you the how-to, from the benefits of cultivating greater intuitive awareness to its utilization. Designed to go well beyond informing you of possibilities, this program provides you with methods for developing your own intuitive capacities, and will assist you toward establishing a greater flow of communications between your unconscious and conscious mind. Learn how expert decision-makers actually listen to their intuition; what to pay attention to (including how to sort out false intuitions from real ones); how you can improve your abilities to invite intuition; how emotions can be utilized to encourage rather than block intuition, and perhaps most importantly: how you can recognize intuition when it presents itself - so you can appropriately act upon the unconscious insights when they emerge into your conscious awareness; A higher level development you can achieve, whether your own intuition is attempting to protect you, or guide you toward accomplishing your personal goals and desired outcomes in life. The material on this program is a compilation of Charles modeling expertise and his work with several great inventors, discoverers and well known decision-makers brought to you on this 2 CD set with an accompanying booklet that outlines the exercises presented. And now... we invite you to discover the limits of logic with the possibilities of intuition.
